As midnight neared, the light of the Red Star glistened on the ocean, to all appearances turning it to a sea of oil and blood. A large wake glinted as a creature swam steadily across the bay, and at last she crawled onto the shore. Her hide was as darkly crimson as the deadly star above, and long, ridged scars marked her as a survivor of many battles. Her own children had driven her out, and she gave a low snarl, dragging a claw through the sand. The fire of her rage burned through her veins, and she had no real conception of what she was walking into; her previous territory had never taken her near any other human settlements, much less a place as large and well-protected as a Weyr. As far as she was concerned, this new land was to be hers. But first, she must fight for it.
Stalking up the shore, she paused, neck swiveling as she heard soft footsteps. Pressing her large body low to the ground, the red wher prowled up a rise of land and slowly peeked over it, baring her teeth when she spotted the interlopers. A dark green wher and a personthing! They walked with a proprietary air that insulted and enraged her, set her inner fuse alight.
But despite her brutal instincts, this red's temper was curtailed somewhat by her own sense of superiority. Anyone could come out on top in a mindless brawl, but she was smart! She was savvy! Slowly she ranged along behind this rise of land, stalking, hunting, until at last a stand of rocks provided the cover required to ambush.
They never stood a chance, poor souls. Durene had paused to gaze out over the water, observing; Dusk leaned lovingly against her handler's leg. The wild red landed on her back, powerful jaws clamping around the smaller wher's neck. With one determined shake, the life left Dusk's body before she could do more than utter a pained sigh.
Durene's scream echoed across the water, but it was far too late; as soon as Dusk was gone, the red lunged, ripping and tearing. Their patrol had taken them to the southernmost end of Dalibor's island, with no one close enough to hear them. In a matter of moments, the red's savagery had ended two lives.
Standing over her fresh kill, the red preened in triumph, not a scratch on her. This was her territory now; she had proven herself. All that remained was to subjugate or destroy any others who dared to challenge her, and as midnight approached, she set off northward, keeping to the shadows. She pounced on a green who ventured forth from hiding to hunt, snapping at her; the tiff lasted mere moments before the red judged the wild wher to be not worth her time, for a grosser scent hung in the air. Humans, always encroaching on territory, shooting arrows at innocent wild whers! She would destroy each one she found, and the whers who were beholden to them; they were worthless in her mind.
With one last cuff, she left the green wher behind and loped into the distance, where she found Morya and Morsk down by the sea; the brown was having a swim, celebrating the end of their shift, while his handler watched with a smile on her face. The wild red growled to herself and slipped into the water, only the top of her head peeking up above the placid surface. Slowly, her muscled body slithered closer; she eventually dove, and dragged the unsuspecting Morsk into the tangle of her embrace. His physical cries were stifled by the sea, but Morya rushed blindly forward at the agony that burst into her mind, drawing her beltknife, not knowing what she faced. Moments later, nothing was left but two bodies floating on the tide, and blood in the water.
Her successful ambush left the red happy, and she strolled out of the ocean for the second time that night, shaking herself off like a giant canine.
"Morya? I thought I heard something," a voice called, as her shift replacement started toward them. "Lesk, call them."
A guttural snarl escaped the red. They were everywhere, horning in on her new territory! There was nowhere to ambush them from, so she simply charged, laying into Lenir with a fatal swipe of her claws. Lesk let out a raw, pained scream at the loss of his handler. Obelisk! Help![/i] Then his voice too was silenced; a tiny black was no match for her. None of them were a match for her! Slinking toward the cliff, she vanished into the shadows, lurking and biding her time until another would venture too close, be it a wild wher or another disgusting human to strike down.

Green Xsssk; 426816
A smell reached the gnarled nose of a green just along the shore. She had been hiding in the shadows, stalking through the darkness with her red eyes glowing through bushes or from behind rocks. A growl erupted, rumbling like hunger from her stomach. She didn't like this smell. It was a new smell. It was a powerful smell. The winds of change brought this smell to her and it unsettled her. Chipped fangs bared as her scarred face contorted into a snarl. She peered out into the moonlight, her grayed scars outlined sickly in the pale light. A paler green speckled the outline of her jaw where ichor of wherries and other, infant whers had met their end by her yellow teeth. Now a new creature meant to take what she had worked for? In silence and shadow she had stalked and killed her living. A new player in this game was unacceptable.
She moved from her hiding place to a new one, the dull light of the moons highlighting far more scars than any domestic wher should have. A particular deep set stretched along her right forearm part-way down her ribs. She was lucky to survive such an injury. She had been lucky her whole life to survive this long. Battles were evident on every inch of her skin. Chunks of her wing sails were gone. Heavy scarring grayed her legs and a few old wounds were even evident along her tail. Her entire body was a hodge-podge of missing pieces and contorted skin that had stretched and twisted while healing.
With light steps granted her by her small frame she stalked from shadow to shadow in the darkness. Her nose stretched and wrinkled as she struggled to get the scent. Suddenly, the scent seemed stronger. She turned on tail just in time to see an unfamiliar red wher pounce upon her. The green hissed and growled at her attacker. How dare this red! Didn't this red know who she was? She was Xsssk! She had survived hundreds of skirmishes and she would survive again! As the claws of the red scraped along her bad shoulder she snapped and missed to return the favor. Then, as suddenly as it had begun, it was over.
Xsssk crouched low on the ground, ready and waiting for another attack. But the red seemed to more intent on another scent. Xsssk paused and smelled humans in the air. So that was the red's game? She was a valiant warrior, which made the green happy. The green could certainly do battle and she would again before the night was out. She grunted her camaraderie, then skulked into a shadows again. Her red eyes glistened with blood-thirst as she stealthily crept through the shadows in search of new meat. Her wounds were forgotten. They hardly mattered.
Meanwhile, Physicero and Physisk had headed toward the South Shore to replace Durene and Dusk. They had paused at the beginning of their patrol route to wait to hand off the torch. For a long time they had waited, though, and there had been no sign of Durene and Dusk. Physisk grunted. He didn't like this. Physicero didn't like it either. Durene and Dusk had never been late before. The blue wher at Physicero's side wrinkled his nose and sniffed the air. Dusk no here. No smell. No where. Physicero bit his lip anxiously, but tried to remain calm. There was no need to panic. Maybe they had gotten sick and turned in early? Either way, he needed to report in to his superiors.
"Physisk... we need to go." He made sure the blue heard him before he headed over toward the West Shore, where Damali and Kalenna would be switching shifts about now. Damali was his Pridesecond and Kalenna was Betahandler. Surely they would know what to do. He hoped that abandoning his patrol route, although necessary, would not be the wrong thing to do.

There were four dreaming out the darkness. One lay in his weyr distant from the swelling tragedy, unstirring. A second Dalibor inhabitant was asleep, but his blue awoke and crawled out onto the ledge, looking around the Bowl.
A different, bondless sleeper challenged his bedsheets to a rodeo and had all four limbs in an intermittent wrestling match against the furs and cloth. He was much closer to the passing death, concealed in a mere harborside ditch, albeit by a heavy door. He had left his window shutters open to allow the tetchy odor of burnt crustacean to waft out (it had still tasted good).
The last of the quartet would have normally greeted the new arrival with fang and claw and hashed out either her flesh or an appropriately tiny and distant territory for her to inhabit. But as it happened, he had gotten his paws on a very large meal very early in the evening, and had decided to capitalize on his good fortune by devoting all his energies to digestion. The enormous iron fishing wher was flumped on his side on the soft white sands northwest of the red's landing, snoring loudly. The remains of his catch were sprinkled around him, bone dust and blood. His long, sensitive snout was starting to catch whispers of the stranger, runny nostrils flexing just slightly out of rhythm with his breathing.
But Slosk did not move. His own effervescence was his only reply, a constant fishy barrage taken inland by ocean winds. A distant human scream did not entice any empathy. The iron plowed his head partway under the sand to coat his earholes. A good spit of sand went up his nose, but he was too lazy to sneeze it out. Instead he elected to roll further onto his side, exposing more of his obscenely full silver-gray stomach to the sea and rotating his head upside-down so the sand could trickle back out.

Kalenna met Damali at the extreme eastern end of their patrol route. A cool autumn wind blew in off the sea, and Kalesk stretched, catlike, her senses sharp as always. The change in the gold when their shift began was always interesting to the astute betahandler; on the way down to the shore, Kalesk ranged far and wide, stretching her limbs and enjoying herself, but the moment they started to patrol, she was all business.
Tonight appeared no different than any other night; Kalenna chatted briefly to the redhandler, trading important information. Kalesk lifted her muzzle to the sky, sniffing, and suddenly froze when she scented something. A wild on the prowl, no doubt. A growl began low in her throat, and she shifted in front of Kalenna's legs; the handler put a hand out to touch her flank, gesturing Damali to silence. A smuggler's boat coming in, perhaps, or a wild wher growing bold...
Physisk,[/i] Kalesk pronounced, and Kalenna frowned as she spotted the distant forms growing ever closer. They were off their route by now, and she also noted the lack of Durene. Something was brewing, there could be no doubt about that.
Call Audren.[/i] The decision was made in an instant, and she knew it was the correct one; if something had happened, they'd need their alphahandler here to call the shots, especially since they couldn't all abandon their patrol routes. The last thing they needed was for their distraction to allow assassins to sneak onto the island.
Kalesk strode toward the bluehandler and his wher - stalked, more like, her hackles raised. Ausk. West shore. No Dusk, Physisk here. Problem.[/i] This was all she knew for now; when more information arrived, it would be dutifully relayed.
In the meantime, Kalenna asked one she was in earshot, "What's wrong, Physicero? Where's Durene?" She was the one coming off shift, so if there was an issue on the south shore, she should be the one bringing it to them. Her absence spoke volumes.

She sensed a disturbance in the force.
Or, rather, she felt the disappearance of her subordinates like a piece of skin torn from her flank. She could live without it, but shards if she was going to without saying anything about it. The great read beast lifted her snarling head and got to her feet.
To anyone else, it would have appeared normal: an irritable red being irritable. Nothing out of the ordinary save, perhaps, the stray wind that blew past Ausk's crimson hide. Audren, however, knew better. She had nine Turns of knowledge under her belt. She knew Ausk like the back side of her hand, and this was an irritation beyond anything else. It surpassed her Run rage, even. In a moment, the alphahandler was up from her desk and running behind her wher.
Intruders? she demanded.
WILD ONES, the wher supplied.
As they tore out into the Bowl, Ausk wailed and shrieked, her guttural cries ringing off the Weyr's walls. It would be difficult to sleep through this night. The anger that roiled up inside Ausk was pure, primal bloodlust. She wanted to feel bone snap between her powerful jaws, incensed not by the death of her Daliborian kin - she could care less - but by the violence pervading the air. She caught it with her mind; stretched out her watchwher's consciousness and felt the alien presences of the wild whers. They skulked around in the darkness on her turf. A mistake.
But Ausk was the darkness. In the bath of light from the Red Star, her hide glistened with bloody brilliance and shadows. She was the protector of the night. It was possible that she cared nothing for Dalibor itself, but she cared for killing at beneficial times. She threw back her heavy head and screamed at the sky. She made to clear the open mouth of the Weyr and bound into the open, but Audren's strong mind stopped her.
We hold the entrance, the woman said. She stood far behind the red, out of harm's way. The red, however, snarled and snapped and paced on one side of the dark river. AUSK KILL ALL. EAT ALL. DRINK ALL. DEATH IN AUSK BELLY. In the distance, she saw a flicker of reflected light - two pinpoints in the eerie darkness. Eyes.
The blue laughed. He opened his crooked maw and let out a dry, hacking cackle. How could he miss the fun? He had planned to sneak into the Weyr before anyone else - but no matter. He wished not to have a beastly red gut him where he stood. He'd lived too long to die from that just yet. And it was a miracle he'd lived as thoroughly as he had. He was an unfortunate creature.
Where his mouth should have closed tight, his bottom jaw kicked out at the wrong angle, bent back. He drooled profusely; sucked and hissed through the gap his deformity made. His green tongue lashed habitually out of it, flicking decaying teeth. With a mind as weak as his, he had no recollection of how he had gotten this way. Whether his egg had been pressed in or the bone had been snapped as a child, he didn't know. All he knew was that he managed to hunt and eat despite, albeit not very proficiently. His ribs heaved beneath the skin that clung to it. Perhaps, if things had been different, he would have been handsome - would have had an entourage of vile females to accompany his midnight blue self - but he had taken a hard hit early on and there was no remedy.
It wasn't going to stop him from having a good time, though. So he cackled and wheezed again and ran. Slhhssk, he seemed to say, slurping through his malformed jaw. Slhhssk. Slhhssk. Slhhssk. Up the west side of the Weyr he ran, barking and laughing all the way. It would be a good night, he decided, but whers are not known for their foresight. [/blockquote] |

Physicero could tell that his presence had made Kalenna uncomfortable even before he had finally made it within earshot. Physisk nodded to Kalesk, duty keeping him from being his usually flamboyant self. No Dusk. No smell Dusk. Dusk no come. Physisk no hear. No smell. Dusk no where. Physisk relayed what he knew to the gold with a grunt for emphasis. Meanwhile, Physicero moved toward Kalenna with a worried countenance. "Durene didn't make the trade-off. She's never been late before. Physisk couldn't smell Dusk anywhere." Physicero sighed and bit his lip as he glanced over her shoulder to the faint dark outline of the south shore. "We waited for a long time, Betahandler... and Durene's not the type to keep us waiting. Physisk has been antsy, and not in the usual way."
Ausk's shrieks reached the ears of all, from Physicero to the priderunners Darryl and Camea who were not on active duty. Camea was in her quarters writing a letter to her mother as she did once a week. She did not personally hear the red's cries, but she took note when Cask suddenly moved from her side and headed toward the door with a low growl. The handler felt the anger pour from her bonded--an emotion he rarely exhibited--and she dropped her quill and abandoned her writing. "What is it, boy?" She asked, an intimacy in her tone she shared with no one else.
Ausk mad. Wild whers. Problem. Must protect. Cask snarled and clawed at the door. Camea's heart sank. Seriously? There was actually something terrible happening that they had to tend to? She quickly dressed in her patrol uniform, carefully spiriting a knife onto her belt. It was not a common accessory to her attire, but considering the circumstances? Camea felt it would be better to be safe than sorry.
They left the room, closing the door behind them, and Camea headed next door to where Kire and Kisk's quarters were. Camea didn't want to leave on her own, despite her trust in Cask to protect her. She pounded on the door and spoke in a raised tone to her friend, "Kire! We have to go. Ausk says there's wild whers." Despite her raised tone and urgency in her voice, the blackhandler was far from yelling.
Darryl was found in the dining hall, where he had been eating his midnight meal on his own. He had expected to finish his meal on his own, too. But he was interrupted. Dask had made her way into the dimly lit room and he saw her dusky green form out of the corner of his eye. Instead of the typical arrogance, though, there was anxiety in her. He stopped eating and watched her as she caught sight of him and ran to his side. DarrylDask. Auskmama mad. Dask needed. DarrylDask needed. Darryl began to collect his dishes but Dask pulled on his trousers with her teeth. No time! Leave now! Needed! DarrylDask follow!
Dask ran out of the dining hall and Darryl was hard-pressed to catch up. He felt bad about leaving his dishes there, but perhaps he could make it up to those that tended the kitchens. On their way through the corridors they ran into a familiar face. Darryl raised his eyebrows and caught his breath, remembering the man as Edison, the one they had met not long ago. He stopped for a second, while Dask ran a bit further before stopping to growl anxiously. Darryl ignored her. It would only take a second. There were plenty of larger whers to hold the front before they got there. "Hey, man. Best stay inside tonight. Something's going down out there." He provided no further information because he honestly didn't know. Dask had told him nothing else. |

Rakir had been just finishing his rounds with Rakisk, the lumbering oaf of a wher now plopped down into a ball under his handler's body. Rakisk was a comfy cushion....kind of. Besides, they were just out enjoying the stars until they decided to head back in. That was that, simple and easy. The pair hadn't yet heard any screams, things were just beginning, but the moment Ausk shrieked, Rakisk pulled his head up and snorted, the horn like growth on it glaring sharp against the moonlight.
"What is it?" The Bronze didn't answer, he didn't often speak, but instead just replayed the sound he had heard into Rakir's head, and abruptly toppled the man off of his back and nudged him onto his own two feet. "Alright, alright, let's go see what's up." A gurgling huff was his response, the wher lumbering next to him as they jogged over to where Kalenna and Damali had met up. The handler didnt start with any formalities, or even any gentleness about the situation, that wouldn't be like him.
"Whay in Faranth's shardin' name is going on with all the screaming? ......Rakisk says wild whers, you've gotta be kidding me you lump of hide." He gritted his teeth and sighed but shrugged his shoulders as of to say that was life and there they were in it. Rakisk simply stood ready, a leering, hulking tank of flesh if he was needed to do his battle and fight.
Nearby in the shadows a sleek, of not malnurished form was bent low to the ground. The blood scent had gotten to her around the time of the first green, but there was no way the Red was going to take all the credit in this little escapade. Lifting her knarled head, the green snorted, her hide a sickly pale green, almost white in some areas where it had been torn and twisted to heal over wounds. Her eyes stood out against the snowy paleness, her jaws parting as her fangs bared and her tongue snaked out through a low hiss.
Missisk want play too....issss ssso fun. Blood good. Red not be best at taking all blood, Missisk take too.

At the scream from Ausk, Moruluth lifted his head up from his new weyrledge. The large purple definitely felt something off, but since there was nothing he could do besides get in the way of the whers, he rested his head back on his forepaws as T'von joined him, awakened by the same feeling. As the pair looked off into the dark Weyrbowl, they had a feeling that neither of them would be able to sleep that night.
Outside the Weyr, a lone black wher was slinking along the shoreline. He had smelled the wild red much earlier and had just now found it safe to move about. His hide was a light kind of black, to the point of where it was almost gray. Being one of the smallest colors, his scars from fighting were many, one lacing across his back extremely close to his spine. The most notable part of him was his tail, or lack thereof. Most of it had been ripped off in combat with a much larger foe, leaving a gnarled stump left.
As the wher began sniffing the ground, he came across the first of the bodies. Giving a gleeful hiss, the black licked up some of the blood and ichor mix staining the ground. He could have a feast and not even hunt for it. Before he could, though, he caught wind of other people and their whers.
Snarling, he would have to leave his meal alone while he found a place to hide. He hadn't lasted this long only to be trumped by those weak two-leggers. He found a suitable tree with enough cover to keep him concealed for now. Digging his claws into the bark, he clambered up it with a speed only Turns of doin could perfect.
Once he was situated, he waited for anything to come underneath his tree. Zunusk see. Zunusk wait. Zunusk pounce. Zunusk pounce all. Kill all. Zunusk win. He crouched down so he could be ready for whatever foolishly wandered within his range.

The pair of offending eyes were gone, but that did not put Ausk at ease. She paced, flexed her claws, shook her shoulders; she would have no rest until this bloody night had been through with. Audren was closer, mentally, to her wher than she had been in a long while. Physically, she stood with a great distance between them, but telepathically, she was right up inside Ausk's mind. She held the reins. She was always in control, and while she allowed Ausk some unease and teeth-gnashing, nothing else would happen unless she willed it.
She had the red relay Kalesk's message verbatim and took over her voice for the reply. There was no time for Ausk's undoubtedly vile answers; only efficiency. Kalenna, Kalesk, she sent to the handler and her charge, We are holding the entrance. Once we are replaced, we will come immediately. Don't take the first move. She released Ausk's mind and the wher snarled and shook her head. AUSK KILL. KILL NOW. NEED KILL, she cried.
Audren spoke through her again. Cask. Dask. Bring yours and anyone you know to the entrance of the Weyr. We can't let the wilds get in. The composed urgency carried clearly through the telepathic link, and as soon as reinforcements showed, Audren bid them farewell.
"Call in whoever you need," she instructed. "If things get scary, tell Ausk immediately. I'm not losing any of you to a bunch of sharding bondless whers." She gave them a stern, wide-eyed look, turned, and ran off with her red ahead of her.
In the light of the Red Star, they spotted Kalenna, Damali, and their whers further down the shoreline. Ausk loosed a terrible roar to announce her presence, her heavy footfalls kicking up sand and earth, and Audren settled in near her Betahandler. Physicero was there, as well; Audren nodded to him.
"Anything yet?" she asked. Late to the party, perhaps, but she would not stand by idly. She had a responsibility. The weight of the night sat heavy on her shoulders and she bore it like a terrible crown. Things had gone wrong already and she felt the guilt of it, but there would be time to fret about it later. For now, she had to accept what deaths had happened and prevent the rest. [/blockquote] |

Wrynsk was adept at sniffing out trouble.
Being outside to begin with helped. The Brownpair was in position, exactly where they were stationed to be. The western shores were quietly ebbing and flowing under the guidance of the Red Star's pull, but in the distance the shimmering surface shone like a bad omen. Wrynri was glad he wasn't assigned to the shores themselves. He wasn't fond of water, and neither was his wher for that matter. The two were strolling alongside the western edge of the weyr, eyes peeled for any inconsistencies in the dark. By now they knew every tree, every stone, and every pathway in their sector. They even knew of what stretched beyond their own borders, just in case it ever became necessary. Such things were important to plan for. It was something they just so happened to remember, with many nights passing peacefully. Tonight would not be one of those evenings. Such was confirmed by the sound of screams.
Trouble! Wrynsk lifted his head, alert like a hound, yet hesitant to react immediately. Human scream, it is...I think. Human.
"Sounds like it," Wrynri confirmed, stepping forth though his muscles grew tense. "It sounds like it came from the southern shores. That's Physicero's territory."
Blue, is his. Should help? Should help... Wrynsk started shifting on his claws, impatient, yet uncertain. He could get in trouble for leaving his post, couldn't he? He didn't want to get Wrynri in any trouble, but if Physisk needed help, it was his duty to back up his brothers in a confrontation.
"Ask if he needs us first." The handler knew he'd be raising hell if he abandoned his post for nothing. It never hurt to check.
Physisk! Help need Wrynsk? Help we give if need. He stretched his neck out a bit to listen, but suddenly she stood straight and stiffened. Hear something.
A faint cackling and hissing. It sounded like a sick creature, but the wind behind it was strong and full of mirth. Wrynsk couldn't quite tell, but it wasn't a weyr resident. It wasn't even a native. It was...in all likelihood an outsider. He caught wind of several strange scents that evening, and this was by far the closest. Wrynri didn't seem to be hearing anything, but he started to look around with an open mind, backing a bit closer to his wher. "How close?"
Close. Closer fast. Wrynsk ended the sentiment with a growl as he faced the northwest, deciding on the best way to intercept the intruder. This wasn't the first time he'd seen action like this, and it was a lot easier for him to engage foes if he needed not to wait on permission to do so. This was his territory, and he'd be bent backwards and threadwhipped if he was going to allow anything to intrude upon it, threatening his loved ones. Without another word, despite the reply he waited on from his fellow Blue, Wrynsk bolted into the dark to follow both the scent and sound of the midnight blue wher that dared to set foot on his land.
His handler stood solitary by the outer wall, withdrawing a knife from his belt. Wrynri never had to use it in self-defense before, but keeping it handy brought a semblance of comfort to him. He was quaking in his shoes, hoping that Wrynsk was after the only immediate danger, and that whatever caused the disturbance in the south wouldn't intercept him before the Brown returned. Page was still asleep, the useless Green. He never saw the point in keeping the flitter if she was just going to sleep all night and party all day. She was always reluctant to help when he tried to get her attention during a shift. If he had a hound or something, it would be far more useful to him. He didn't even like dogs. It still would have helped a bunch if he had one now. Wrynri felt utterly helpless out here on his own. After tonight he swore he'd take classes in archery or something, if he could find someone to show him how it's done. Squatting up in a tree with a ranged weapon would be a far smarter way of dealing with invaders on one's own than a nine-inch dagger-wielding novice on even ground. He looked to the trees. At least if he climbed up one he'd have a few more minutes to live if found. He'd see his death coming as opposed to being taken by surprise.
Wrynsk let out a challenging growl as he charged, prepared to intercept the Blue. He wanted to draw the intruder to him, if possible, preferring that over a chase. The best thing about engaging an intruder is insuring that it is dead, and won't be coming back.

There was one sound, besides Burnstuff, that could always get Slosk on his feet. A uniquely titanic roar vibrated the sand grains of his bed, the waves of sound bristling over his iron hide. His knotty body shrank briefly into a tighter ball of dozing flesh, and then he dragged out his arms and legs, bones popping beneath his skin before he rolled himself upright. Streams of summer fungus were still clinging to life around his joints and along the old hook-scars on his jaws, the lichen-like formations a pale, non-metallic green. One of his nostrils had been almost completely plugged with the stuff, but the colder nights were beginning to send all the growths rotting off. He found a good rock to bash his snout against a few times, dislodging the most irritating parasites before he took a deep breath of the night air.
Slosk's eyes swelled with fast-moving oranges, and though they were quick to simmer down to yellows, the more fiery patches kept returning. His forked tongue burst from the front of his jaws like an overactive two-headed slug, waving at the increasingly offensive odors before slurping back in. He was torn: there were intruders to rout, but there was also that personal horror to attend. Strange, he did not feel her drawing him in. Maybe he had grown tougher. Too tough for the bloody queen. Ha! With a jolly swing of his bumpy head, the iron trotted northwest to see Ausk.
Oh. But...oh. Ausk was in busy company. Slosk trundled up the shore toward them, neck arched at the sight of the bronze and blue, only to ascertain that the younger red and the gold that sometimes took beauty walks around his territory were also present. The wild wher checked his advance, goggling at the crowd with big yellow eyes. His head tilted as he examined Ausk, then Kalesk, then Damask. None of them were very glowy. Slosk offered an inquiring gurgle that could be approximately translated as Run yet?

HUSTAFER REFERENCE
What had started out a calm, peaceful night was swiftly turning to a horror show.
The moment Kalenna waved her to silence during their quiet, pre-shift change conversation, Damali pulled the crossbow she always carried on patrol from it’s holster and began cranking back the draw. Even when one of her priderunners joined them, she left the talking to Kalenna, instead keeping her head on a swivel as she prepared her weapon.
The night was full of sound, now – peace shattered by the antics of wild whers as well as by Ausk’s enraged howls. Damask tensed against her side as Audren and her red joined then, the elder red in the midst of a full fledged fury – Damask’s eyes whirled a violent red, and she kept up a continuous, low growl in the midst of wher and handler’s silent conversation.
Time to move. Too much red, in too little space.
“I’ve had Damask reaching for everyone on patrol, or due to head out,” she interrupted in a calm, quiet voice as she double-checked her weapons, from the crossbow in her arms to the short blade at her waist and the long knife in her boot, then stretching to test her flexibility in her markedly non-standard stiffened wherhide armor, “We’re missing three – Dusk, Lesk and Morsk. Someone needs to go see if it’s just whers down, or humans too - I’m volunteering. I think…that if Dusk and Durene are both missing…well. Someone needs to check on the other two, and make sure their relief isn’t walking into a trap. Hustafer is heading north on the back side of the weyr to meet me.”
Stinky here. Damask interrupted, swinging her head around to give the big iron a filthy look.
Damali glanced down towards Slosk, wincing as the wind brought the cluster of whers and handlers a hint of his… calling it a scent was an insult to the rest of Pern. “Well, at least he isn’t looking like a human-aggressive wild wher tonight, though I suppose he could kill with that stench alone…” she muttered, her attempt at levity falling flat even to her own ears.
Still. A bronze, a queen and a big angry red could deal with “Slosk” if needed; so she swung herself up to easily perch on her red’s back. “We’ll move quick; I’ll keep a running report up.”
Damask lit off at a rapid trot, not quite a full-out run, but still a ground-eating pace as they headed towards the general area where Damali knew the east outer weyr patrollers generally met at shift change. A quick detour was called for, however…
A dolphineer lived out here, with no quick way of contacting any of the whers on patrol – so Damali paused long enough by the very modest house to check to make sure there was still someone human and alive inside – Human breath, bed noise. Not dead.
Damask also solved the question of how to get the odd dolphineer’s attention by shoving her snout in one of the dangerously unshuttered windows and giving a door rattling roar.
“Seal your windows and doors, dolphineer, or tell me now and I’ll call a dragon to take you to the weyr – we’ve got trouble out here tonight,” Damali called in through the window after a few moments – had to give the man time to adjust to a red trying to roar him out of a presumably dead sleep in the middle of the night, after all.

Hm. Laury back. Noises. The green wher nudged Laurierd a few steps back and cocked her head to hear better. Screams and shouting, calls to get to the gate.
"Oh shells, is something going on? What's going on? We need to get there anyway, y'know, if we're needed." Laurierd looked at Lauriesk, who was still listening intently. The green whipped her tail lazily but didn't answer. It might be something important or it might be not, and she'd really prefer to go hunt for some fat tunnelsnakes and relax, and--
"Well, let's go!" Laurierd was already running ahead, long blonde hair whipping back. At least she had remembered her knife. Lauriesk followed, surprisingly agile, long tail trailing. She kept her eyes on Laurierd but listened if she could hear anything useful; the woman preferred to act before she thought, and Lauriesk supposed someone had to be the brains of the operation. She still wasn't terribly interested in whatever was going on, but she did whatever necessary to keep her handler safe.
Laurierd ran, autumn air pleasant on her face. Faranth, it was so different in Dalibor, like the weather and stuff... All these new people and which way was the front gate, anyway? She stopped for a moment, turning this way and that, until Lauriesk pushed her to the right direction. "Right! I meant to do that." Sure do. Laury knife? "Here it is!" She patted her knife's handle on her hip and grinned. Lauriesk was always so fussy.
"Heyy! There were some calls or something? Is something going on?" Laurierd ran to the gate, and looked around. She had hoped there might be someone she could already remember, but it was so hard to remember.

Did you hear that, Cal? Minanth picked up the screams and various whercommunication, and she was immediately on the ledge of the Weyr. Whers. Whers coming to hunt in Dalibor! Her eyes swirled red, an unusual colour for the orange. In my Weyr! In my Dalibor! THEY WON'T GET AWAY WITH IT! She roared, giving Calmera just enough time to throw onj some riding gear and climb on. "Weyr's whers can see better than you in the dark. We can go, but you must obey my rules completely." MY WEYR. ...Yes. But THERE WILL BE BLOOD! She roared again, swooping off the ledge and into the sky, while Cal rolled her eyes. Always with the dramatics. "Minanth, stop roaring. The whers will hear you."
She flew fast, wings beating furiously, her eyes scanning the ground. The pair flew south, towards the area people hadn't yet gathered. Minanth's red eyes fixated on a dark shadow in the water. She dove, this time quietly, and landed a little ways off on the shore. Blood. See, Cal, see, someone is there! Her eyes flashed a momentary yellow, but returned to a deep shade of red in a second. KILLERS! MURDERERS! I smell bodies from Dalibor! Snarling, she looked around and Cal slid down to check.
Durene and Dusk, well, what was left of them. She knew their names but that was all; the shock numbed her grief at seeing them dead. There was no mistake; the pair had been attacked by a wher all right. "Minanth, I need you to contact Audren or Kalenna, whichever you can. Tell them we found Durene and Dusk..."
A wher has sla- "Killed." Killed Durene and Dusk on the Southern Shore. We shall hunt the killer down. We shall have its blood. Minanth spoke to everyone who could hear, voice filled with rage. Cal soothed the dragoness with calming thoughts and images, reminded her they needed to look for any stray whers about. "You're not a Red, so knock off the rage and dramatics."
She took a few steps closer to the tree under which Zunusk was hiding, but didn't see the black wher. Minanth snarled at the bushes and sniffed the air, but to her most whers smelled alike, which was "bad".

Physisk noted the Alphahandler's greeting and gave her a solemn nod in return. At her question, he shook his head. Nothing yet. Well, there was Durene missing, but otherwise very little. Physisk heard a call from his fellow brown and Physicero took note. Wrynsk patrol. Ask if need help. Physisk relayed and Physicero nodded. Ask if they've seen anything. Ask about Keelsk, Flask, and Whisk. Tell them to head for the entrance. Physicero was careful to only relay the whers' names, which would be recognizable to other whers while their humans' names might not be. Physisk grunted. See Keelsk? See Flask? See Whisk? Wrynsk come. Wrynsk entrance. To Physisk come! Wrynsk's too.
"Wrynri and Wrynsk are out on patrol, Alphahandler. Physisk heard them. I told them to come to the entrance and asked about Keely, Flayn, and Whinae, but no response yet." He nodded to her, his way of noting he would tell her what was going on as he knew it.
Meanwhile, Cask had become more impatient. He crowed out, his call echoing through further corridors than the chamber he and his stood waiting. Camea stood back, unsure what to do for a moment as Cask had never behaved that way before. Then, her calculating mind took over. She calmed down and dug her heels deep into Cask's mind. She heard Audren through Ausk and Cask. She knew what needed to be done. This was the moment she had been waiting for.
Call them.
Cask roared again, stretching his claws against the ground as he reached out to all the whers in the vicinity that could hear. Come Cask! Meet Cask! Go battle!
Camea, meanwhile, used her own physical voice to get the attention of all that would hear. She knocked on doors that she passed as well to wake any midnight sleepers. "Arm yourselves! Wild whers are coming! We need to hold the entrance!"
Dask heard as well and gave her own trumpeting roar. Her mental speech could not reach as many whers as Cask, but she called anyway. Join Dask! Join Dask's! Battle entrance! Darryl heard and glanced from Edison to Dask, feeling another wave of protectiveness sweep over him. Dask was never this upset. Something was definitely wrong. He heard Dask's relay of Audren's announcement and tensed. His hand found his belt knife, a large bowie knife that he liked to wear on patrols. Perhaps it was lucky he was wearing it tonight. is patrol uniform he tended to wear almost every night, whether or not he had patrol.
It was Lonet's first night at Dalibor. She had no scheduled patrols to allow for her to finish unpacking her quarters and make herself and Losk at home. So when a cry came out to sound an alarm from what seemed like multiple whers, it came as more than a surprise. But Lonet didn't hesitate. A battle meant casualties and her expertise would be needed. Losk would be needed too. They could not stand by when their new home already ached for their assistance. She threw on her patrol uniform, whose patches still reflected Igen colors as she had not had time since her arrival that dusk to change them. It hardly mattered. So long as she had leathers to protect her, that was what counted.
It took her longer than she would have liked as she made a detour to the infirmary. After quickly explaining to the healer in charge what was going on, she grabbed what she needed to make a bag containing a quick first-aid kit. Numbweed, bandages, redwort, and several other first-response items should be able to hold the injured until they could be escorted back to the infirmary. She also took one of the saws meant for amputations. Lonet didn't mean to take anyone's legs or arms tonight, but she figured it couldn't hurt to have. It could at the very least be a better weapon than the small paring knife she kept at her belt. After that she told the healer on duty to send a couple helping hands when they could manage, then took Losk and ran to the entrance as fast as they could manage.
Losk see! Losk smell! Losk needed? The blue announced to Rakisk and Lauriesk as he joined them. Lonet set up a station for tending wounded several feet behind the line on which the humans stood, off to the side to take advantage of the cover the wall of the Bowl gave them. It wouldn't do to be in the line of sight of any wild whers that meant to meet an easy meal. Hopefully if they got past this final line Lonet would have some time to find shelter for herself and her patients before their presence would be notice. After which she quickly moved to the other handlers to make her position and identity known as quickly as possible.
"Lonet of blue Losk, Journeywoman Weyrhealer. I just transferred. I have a station set up over here to tend the wounded. Let the Alphahandler and everyone know that I'm ready to service any and all casualties. Losk can relay any messages you need to reach me." She nodded to Rakir and Laurierd and began to head back, but turned back to say one more thing, "Also, don't be a hero. If anyone is injured to the point where they can't fight, tell them to get their sweet behinds over here as fast as they can." She then returned to her post to finish preparing her station, leaving Losk there in their company in her stead.
Losk hold! The blue told his handler in his soft, worried voice. Lonet soothed him with kind thoughts and kept an ear open for him. If it came to Losk fighting, she would have to take control. The blue was hardly sturdy enough to do anything on his own. She also kept her saw in arm's reach in case anything got too dangerous.
Xsssk, meanwhile, had crept up to the shadow of the wall on the outside of the Weyrbowl. She had caught the scent of something. It was human. It was human and it was all alone. She liked her scarred and tattered lips in anticipation. Poor human all alone with no one to protect him! Well, he wouldn't be poor for long. She crouched in the bushes in the shadows, rolling her shoulders and taking pride and ambition in the pain that seared from where the red had sliced her. Ichor ran down from the open wound, staining her hide further. Despite his being all alone, she knew he was larger than her. She was small for a green, much smaller than the domestic types. So she had to be stealthy. She had to be quick and fast, like a thief in the night. She was the thief in the night. And her prize? Human souls.
Quickly she ran out and descended on Wrynri. Her claws aimed for his ankles and lower legs to immobilize him as she ran past, not losing momentum. After her attack she continued running past him, turning quickly on-claw to face him again to prepare her next attack. She snarled, angry and ichor boiling with the need for flesh and blood. She snapped her jaws threateningly, still keeping a half-bitten ear out for his wandering brown. It wouldn't do to be caught before her fun was over. |

The dolphineer screamed as the bed-rattling call-to-arms woke him. His arms and legs flailed around him like an insect's close to death. Eventually some of the spastic motions carried him off the side of the bed and onto the floor face-first. There he lay, twitching.
In this quiet following the audio assault, Damali's words trickled into his bedroom and got Ekuda to lift his greyed face from the ground. His eyes trekked up to the gnarled silhouette in his window, tracing the armored lines of arms and a human head rising above the wherish base. A sudden flush of cold shot through him, and to repress the urge his eyes felt to roll up and close, he dropped his face back to the stone floor.
He rose, silent, and swayed over to the windows. He shuttered them all, the one the figure was visible through last. The last metal curtain parted again a few seconds later. A fresh fish was tossed out, but it caught on the window opening's edge. Ekuda's long brown fingers crept in around the sides of the opening and prodded the fish out. Humming of a dolphineering duty song could be heard until the shutters were quietly closed a second time. Even then, the tune continued, muffled as Ekuda returned to his bed. He crawled beneath the bedframe and curled up in a fetal ball, rocking slightly in the dark.

While Wrynri looked for a sturdy tree in his immediate vicinity to scale, he heard a snapping of brush coming from nearby. He crouched, knife ready, but his nerves were frayed and he was sweating bullets. Any creature older than a grub would know he wasn't prepared for combat. Not against a wild wher. Harder men have died facing these things, Greens even. Wrynri was but half a man, and even less a warrior than that. He tried tuning his mind to Wrynsk, praying that it was his Brown returning to him rather than a foe with blood on its mind. His blood of all things. But he had the distinct feeling in the pit of his stomach that he was about to engage something of an enemy alignment.
The bulk bursting from the bushes was hard not to see, even under the red glow of a haunting satellite trickling modestly through the leaves above. Wrynri couldn't dodge at the speed she came charging, so he tried to parry the wher unsuccessfully. He was knocked down, tripped at the knees as the creature more than brushed into him. He scrambled on all fours to get vertical as the wher started rounding back towards him, but he knew if he tried to abscond, she would catch up to him effortlessly. So instead of running he braced himself, seeking her out so he'd have a better parry in store for her next attack. The only fortunate thing about all this was that he understood the mind of wher. If he continued to act purely in stubborn defense, his death would be delayed. A delay was all he needed. Wrynsk had to be back now at any second unless he found the target he was searching for.
She snapped his jaws at him, drawing closer. She was practically daring him to run. The boy held his ground, but he felt like adrenaline alone was keeping him from fainting. His mind screamed for help; from Page who only stirred in her sleep, or Wrynsk who wasn't responding. He screamed in any which way but physically, because his voice and breath were both lodged so deep within his chest that he was probably turning purple rather than pale. This was it. Such was the fate of a handler left to fend for himself during an all-out wild wher invasion.
A roar to his immediate left caused Wrynri to lose his balance and tip over, but Wrynsk was upon Xsssk before she could take advantage of the handler any further. YOU NOT HURT WHAT IS WRYNSK'S! It wasn't the scent he was after, but on his way to intercept the Blue he picked up on a scent that was even stronger. When he realized it was coming down wind from where he just left, he knew his handler was in immediate danger. He crashed into the Green, getting her attention no doubt. He was prepared to end her life too; he would not tolerate an attempted murder on his beloved.

A roar echoed distantly, enough to rouse Vak from his sleep in an instant. He knew what a wher sounded like, had encountered one a couple of times before, and several more times while in this new place. His ears pricked forward and then flattened, a soft, high whine escaping as he slowly backed away from the entrance of the room. Cilia needed to be awake, he decided, and he would be a good boy and wake her up. Something was happening, and he didn't know what to do. Resting his head as far forward as he could on to the bunk, the reddish-brown herder dog whined again, more insistantly this time when Cilia refused to wake up.
A moment past, and then another before he took a moment to consider his options. And barked once. Loudly. Right in her ear, as a matter of fact.
"Shard you, mutt, I'm up, I'm..." A frown. The hair on the back of her neck rising as the sound of roaring echoed through the caverns. Her eyes narrowed and she was out of bed in an instant. She'd heard a few roars like that before, and they always meant something was going down. "Vak. Here." Her voice was sharp as the canine ducked his head and slinked over to crawl beneath her bed, the tip of his nose poking out as he sighed.
Cords tied, straps secured. She ran down a mental checklist as she fished securing the last of the cords on her wherhide boots. Leg and knee guards? Check. Her fingertips brushed against the tough leather, bending her leg to make sure the guards wouldn't hamper her movement without sacrificing durability and protection. Arm guards? Check. Her fingers tested those too, making sure that nothing was too loose or cutting off circulation to her rather much needed limbs. She struck herself in the chest with her fist, grunting a little as she adjusted a strap on the side of the leather armor covering her chest and stomach. That'd been a little loose for her liking, better safe than sorry on that. Knives in their sheathes, Cilia swept her long hair up into a ponytail, swiftly winding the rest of the long, light length around and secured it with a strip of leather. Bun complete, grey eyes narrowed as she gave the silent hand signal for Vak to stay and turned- smacking right into another figure as she started to head out of her room.
A brush of something against her leg and the tell-tale tock tock of Vak's tail against the bed and floor gave the other's identity away. She took a moment, noting that Ciali's fiery hair was currently pulled up rather like her own at the moment- and she was suited up the exact same way. A grim half-smile took her mouth as she gave a curt nod to her sister. "Same mind link again, I see. Let's go, I hope you still remember how to use those things at your hip." And strode out with her sister at her side to watch her back.

AylinaPretty... there is trouble.[/i] Wenth's voice caught Aylina out of a light sleep. The senior weyrling's tousled pink hair fluffed up more than usual as she threw herself out of bed with a stumble. Her large brown eyes looked about her weyr- her very own weyr!- and found nothing. Had Wenth been mistaken?
No, she hadn't, Aylina realized a moment later and headed to the entrancre where her lovely lady was perched, neck craned down and watching with her large dinnerplate eyes at the activity below. "What's goin' on, Wenth?" The tall woman asked softly, resting a hand against the dragon's leg to let her know she was there.
Wenth snorted, a soft, low sound. Ausk is angry... yes, very angry... there are bad whers attacking good whers, yes... they are.[/i] She did not know why bad whers were being bad and not being good, but there was sadness, because there would be people who would not come back. Just like in Thread, there would be dragons and riders who would not come back. Can't see as well like this... no... I can't... AylinaPretty wants to help, yes...?
"Yep. I'mma get dressed, jus' in case somethin' comes an' gets ugly with others. There a medic place or somethin' set up where Ondine might be?" If the girl was even awake at this hour, should be still sleepin'. "Call 'er, let 'er know we got a situation an' can get 'er there if she needs." She added as an after thought, hopping on one foot as she tried to pull her stubborn boot on. "C'mon now, get on my foot y'shardin' thing."
Blue eyes tinged with the yellow of anxiety whirred as she reached out and contacted Dilath and hers. Dilath... yours is needed. There will be hurt people, and whers, and dragons too I think... maybe... maybe not dragons, I do not know... There is trouble... yes, there is... she will need your help to guard the injured, yes, she will...[/i] The still growing tan rested on her belly as her rider finished hastily running a hand through her unnaturally colored locks in an attempt to tame their wild ways before pulling herself on to Wenth's neck. I will ask what to do, yes, I will...[/i]
Aylina smiled, her dragon was picking up more and more of her own behavioral patterns, and it was cute to watch her imitate things, even if the former blonde had the notion that, well, Wenth was imitating because it was a 'wherry see, wherry try' kinda thing. She followed Wenth's thoughts, reaching out to Audren, Kalenna, and Damali, as Wenth had informed her that the three were currently very, very active... particularly the red handlers. Wenth an' Aylina of the Firefinders 'ere, what's th' update an' what's needin' done that we an' the others on dragonback an' others without whers can help with?[/i]
If not Thread, then somethin' else, Dalibor was certainly a real interestin' place alright. She mused to herself as Wenth descended with a bit of a snort. Vaulting off her dragon with a quiet oof, Aylina brushed herself off and strode quickly to the dolphineer's hut, knocking a couple of times on the door as the large tan kept an eye out for anything dangerous and unfriendly. "Dolphineer Ekuda, sir? M'name's Aylina of Wenth, Firefinder class, I'm here t'get ya out and away from all this trouble where you'll be safe." Hopefully he'd answer her, she didn't wanna have to end up breakin' a door or somethin' just t'pull him out.

Call to arms. Yuri hadn't been given a duty roster yet and thus had been trying to figure out what to do with himself. His head jerked up at the roar, looking down to the quivering form of Yusk pressed tightly against his hip with her eyes whirring yellow and orange. Bad bad bad. Bad whers attack. Not good. Angry reds. Angry, angry. What do?[/i] Like her appearance suggested, her voice was higher in pitch for a wher, her feet shuffling nervously as she somewhat pranced in place, looking to him for orders and wanting to please, wanting to help and do hers proud and make others proud too.
Yuri rubbed his chin worriedly, an anxious habit that hadn't ever really gone away. Get ready to help. Find the boots. Smaller, shorter orders were always more effective when talking to Yusk than giving anything complicated or long winded, he'd found. He held the image in his mind of what boots he wanted as his lanky wher bolted to the other side of their new home, snuffling about as she searched for them. He, in turn, began pulling on the rest of his gear in preparation for anything to happen. Extra thick and durable wher hide armor stretched over his broad chest, shoulders and protected his vulnerable stomach, equally thick gloves covered his hands and forearms. Knobby hide and weight leaned against him, catching on his trousers as he looked down to see the hopeful look on his bonded's face, the boots he'd wanted in her mouth.
Yuri smiled, accepting what she'd brought him with a delicate gentleness that betrayed his large size. "Good girl, Yusk." He told her softly. "Good girl." His attention turned to getting the heavy boots on and, once that was complete, putting on his belt with its short sword ready to be used. Two knives were on his person, both in reach in separate sheaths on his person; one on the front and shoulder of his armor, the other tucked into his boot- just in case he was caught while kneeling.
Yusk good! Good girl Yusk! Go help, go be good, yes! Now? Now Yuri? Now go be good Yusk?[/i] She pranced, nearly standing on her hind legs as she wheeled around and looked at Yuri with imploring, though still nervous eyes. She did not like bad and angry, but she wanted to be good and have other wher like her. She wanted others to love her like Yuri loved her. And to be loved like that, she had to be good Yusk and go help like a good Yusk should.
Yuri smiled, a very faint, warm smile as his attention turned to the inevitable conflicts up ahead. She was full grown and topped out in size, but she wasn't strong. Fast, but not at all strong. She might be able to outrun a much larger wher though, and hopefully said wher were bulkier, and less on stamina than his delicate lady. "Yes, let's go help."
Yusk burbled, dashing forward a little ways, pausing and running back when she realized she was going too quickly for her Yuri to keep up. Yusk help, Yuri help! Go be help, go be good![/i] They hurried out, Yuri veering over to where he saw a group of what had to be other handlers meeting up. "Yuri of green Yusk, very recently transferred." A pause, he was nervous and a little shy, but he had to put any misgivings aside; there were lives at stake. Possibly. He wasn't sure. "Where would Yusk and I be most help?"

[/url][/size] The small black waited for a while. Waited for someone to come, hopefully a person alone, so he could drop down on them. But after some time, no one came by, not a person or a wher. So Zunusk got himself comfortable in his branch and decided to take a little nap. And if anything came by, he would either hear them or smell them and his plan could continue from there. As he shifted again, the branch gave a small creak, just barely holding on to his weight. As he finally settled down, a strong win blew in his direction. He caught the scents of all the whers that were ahead, including Slosk's horrid stench, which was the only one he had smelled before. But there was also a different scent altogether. One the black had rarely caught before. His head jerked up as the orange landed a short distance from where he was at. He wasn't expecting this at all. As the dragon and her rider examined the bodies, Zunusk abandoned all hope of getting to use them as a free meal. But now he was in more danger than ever before. Even with the bigger whers he would stand as a bit of a potential threat. But there was no way he could stand to the orange at all, though her rider was a different story. As the woman positioned herself right under his branch, he contemplated what to do. If he attacked Calmera and killed her, then her dragon would follow suit. But then others would come, too, which would be bad. Being so close to Minanth, he heard the message very clearly. And after that, he had made his decision. He did not like it, but he did not want to die today. Zunusk remained shock still, hoping that niether dragon nor person would see him, as either could end up disaterous, and that his hide would conceal him in the darkness. His branch finally gave way from underneath him, and he was sent crashing on top of Cal. His claws raked into several spots along her body, but the bulk of his weight went off to her side. As he stood back up unharmed, his eyes whirled a fast yellow as he was now exposed to everyone around him. He quickly dashed away from the orange and her rider, making his way through the trees and in the general direction of where the group of whers and their handlers were at. Hopefully he could make it far enough away from the dragon to where he could find a suitable place to hide and be safe until all of this blows over. |

Slhhssk was, perhaps, dull enough to be lured to Wrynsk. He saw the handled brown in the distance and was definitely moving towards him, but it was a slow ordeal. The blue sauntered. He took pride in the jarring movements of his pointed shoulders; in the drawn-out sway of his kinked tail. He salivated a trail on the ground behind him and savoured the anticipation. He would not waste the fun by running up so soon. He wasn't in any rush.
Then, something else crossed his vision, and the scent of her hide wafted up his gnarled nose. Aha! A green, gone to attack the brown. He threw his head back and laughed, the shrill noise cutting through the air like nails on slate. Haha! Ahahaha! He shoved his tongue through his jaw and slurped greedily, then hunkered down to the ground. Two on one! He cackled. Two on one! With a mighty burst from his bony legs, he leapt forward and ran for Wrynsk and Xyssk.
His teeth were largely useless and his jaw clicked if he opened it too wide, but his claws were sharp and dexterous. With no care as to what he harmed - handled or wild - he first tore into Xyssk, but caught a claw on Wrynsk in passing. With a barking guffaw, he tumbled his way through the two and scrabbled at the rock floor to gain his footing. Panting, grinning, and hissing madly, he fixed his wild eyes on his opponents. Cal let out a shriek as Zunusk fell on her, but it was cut short as air was punched out of her lungs. He was small and his full weight wasn't on her, but he was still a heavy wher and there would definitely be bruises under the lacerations left by his claws. Her eyes widened and she fumbled for a knife, tried to push him off, fought. She couldn't end her life like this, no, not by being eaten by a wild wher - but her memories reeled past her eyes and she saw stars every time the wher sunk its claws into her stomach. Minanth let out another deep roar, but before she could grab the black wher by his head and crush it, he was gone in the shadows.
"Mi-Minanth..." Calmera gasped. A mild euphoria was beginning to wash over her, the kind that only comes in deep pain. She was in a shock, but luckily her mind had chosen to go over I need a healer, back at the Weyr. That was all she could think of; Durene and Dusk were forgotten for the moment, as the rider focused on staying concious. "Minanth, take... Take me to the Weyr right away."
Minanth turned, eyes swirling between red, yellow and a sympathetic grey. Her rage was put aside in favour of making Hers feel better. She still wanted to go after Zunusk, but only after the immediate pain on Cal was taken care of. Cal! Don't worry, I'll take care of everything! You hurt lots and there's a lot of blood but luckily I am here! She slid down and helped Cal on her back, thought of the entrance to the infirmary and went Between.
Everything outside of a pin-sized point seemed out of focus. The roof of the infirmary wavered and she could hear voices nearby. Someone was peeling the bloody remains of her riding jacket and shirt off; someone else was poking around her stomach. "Now, see here? Most of these cuts aren't that deep, but this one is the kind we need to be careful about. See, this muscle here has been torn. Any deeper and we'd be in guts up to our armpits. This is how we manage these..." Had she been more lucid, Cal would have rolled her eyes. Really? Using her as a teaching subject to apprentice healers? But as it was, the healers had slathered her with numbweed and anaesthetics, and she felt as if in a dream.
Outside Minanth paced to and fro, alternating between rage, worry and sadness. The healers had said Cal wouldn't die, but she could feel the worry and pain surrounding the Weyr. There were still murderers out there that needed to be crushed - Zunusk had better stay out of her way, because she would crush his skull and tear out his heart if he came within her sight - but she couldn't do it alone. Sicriath had tried to go out alone. Minanth shivered at the thought and looked unhappily at the sky. CalMine, you're going to get better, aren't you? And then we'll go fly again, right?
She howled at the tragedy that had befallen Hers, until a healer told her to tone it down.

Laurierd grinned at Lonet's warning. "Totally! Don't worry about us! Right?" She glanced at Lauriesk, who seemed to shrug. The blonde made a quick victory sign to her fellow wherhandlers, and the pair were off towards the east coast. She wasn't worried about wild whers; forever the optimist, she was sure she'd have a plan if they happened across something. It was slow going, sneaking and creeping like that, but she wanted to do a thorough job. It wouldn't do to rush and let something slip by, even though she really wanted to hurry.
Lauriesk wasn't worried, per se. She didn't worry and fret. Nevertheless, she kept a keen lookout, slithering in the shadows, blending in the the bushes and grass. She also listened. Any shriek made her stop and look around with greenish-yellow eyes; any strange smell close her eyes for a moment. Their respective jobs were clear; she took care of the fighting and finding things to fight, while Laurierd was the bait. And the navigator. Lauriesk couldn't understand how her handler could just look up and tell where they should go.
The pair crept slowly, slowly onwards, away from the Weyr.
Laury stop. Movement. Go light, will make target show, Lauriesk whispered suddenly, flattening and freezing in the shade. Lauriesk stepped out of the shadow into the moonlight. "Oh, woe is me, I am all alone on a beach and there are wild beasts about! Whatever am I to do?" She blinked her green eyes and twirled her arms in mock desperation, while her wher prepared to attack whatever came close to Laurierd.

In the weyrling barracks, two figures were awake.
"No, Dalahirath. You are not going outside when there are wild whers about, and that is final." Analucia's tone was as unyielding as a bar of iron. But AnaluciaMine, don't you want to know what's happening? I wouldn't go outside the Weyr, I promise!
"No. You would get in the way or get hurt. Or both. Little dragonets must sleep at night in any case."
But--!
"No ifs and no buts. To sleep, dearest."

The faint roar rumbled through the candidate's barracks, causing the woman to stop and straighten. Aidyn whimpered and trotted over to briefly nuzzle her owner's hand, worry in those big dog eyes of hers. Roars like that were from the big scary things called Whers, and if one of them was roaring, things were bad indeed. That just wasn't okay in Aidyn's world. Her dear sweet owner would take care of whatever was causing the Wher to roar, wouldn't she? Oh yes she would! The dog glanced up and then looked out the door, clearly indicating her intent to Ciali.
Well, getting ready for combat and figuring out whatever was going on would be a good way to relieve her boredom. Plus, she really didn't like how angry that sounded. Definitely Wher, definitely angry, and that was never a good thing. For anyone. Petting her lovely dog for a moment, she crossed the room, retrieving the crossbow that she'd recently learned how to use, as well as her knives. Putting those aside for now, she put on the Wherhide armor that would allow her to be flexible as well as a bit more protected. If they were human...well, leather was good. If it were Wher or dragon...it was still better than getting raked directly on the flesh. But if it were just a human, the odds were good that the Watchwhers could have taken care of it already. Possibly. She ran down the same checklist that, unknowingly, her sister was about to do. Leg and knee guards, arm guards, fingerless gloves, chest guard. She paused for a moment and put her hair up into a bun that was always better for fights than the long hair she normally went with.
Knives secured, crossbow and bolts at her side, she whistled softly to Aidyn and was slipping out the door. If she was right about her sister, and she usually was, Cilia would tell Vak to stay in his room. Well, they'd do better when the sibling dogs had each other and could have someone else around. She'd only just reached the door when it abruptly opened...and her sister stood in it, garbed the same way she was. She allowed herself a grim smile as Aidyn slipped by, to the chorus of happy thumps from Vak, and the female's own tic-tocking tail. Looks like she'd been right about what her sister would do. She had to chuckle a bit at Cilia's quip, however. As if she wouldn't know how to use these things. “If I recall, the last time you asked me that, we put the whole group into the infirmary.” Things always seemed better when there was trouble on the horizon and her sister watching her back. Time to find where everything was being coordinated from and offer some assistance.

Dilath rose from where she'd been having a wonderful time sleeping as Wenth reached for her. She had already half-woken up with the sharp buzz of telepathy flying around, as well as the roars from Ausk and other Whers. Clearly something needed to be done, but she wasn't sure that she should wake Her's. After all, she was fast asleep, and clearly needed it. Ondine had been looking more and more ragged recently, but had insisted she'd been getting enough sleep. Dilath snorted, clearly showing what she thought of that, but she also was intelligent enough to know that if she had wanted to improve herself so much, sleep just might have to be sacrificed. Plus, Her's was so good about feeding her, and oiling her, and loving her in every way.
But this call from Wenth gave her that needed push to get the healer up and out of bed. After all, Ondine would be sad if she could have done something and was not there to do it. That settled, she reached back out for Wenth's mind. Where should we go to do all of these things? Find Ausk? Or maybe that was a silly question. Head towards the entrance to the Weyr from the outside, or even get in contact with Ausk, or Audren at least, herself. Or Her's wonderful mind would know what to do! Eyes whirling yellow, she cautiously moved over to Ondine, nudging her mentally and physically. Wake, Mine. There is something wrong. You are needed. Bad Whers are in the Weyr, attacking ours.
The dragonhealer took a few moments to be brought out of sleep, opening her eyes lazily and staring at Dilath for a few seconds while murmuring, “Yes Dilath? Are you hungry?” Until her eyes finally focused on Dilath's own, and the color that was there. The color that was almost never there. In seconds, the rags of sleep vanished, and Dilath repeated her message. Oh shards. Thanks for waking me up. Let's be sure to not wake up Odelle and Malith. She grabbed clothing, changing as silently as she could, and then woke Ruem. If she were going to be healing while she was tired, she'd want a bit of extra help, and Ruem was invaluable at that.
In minutes she had on a simple infirmary outfit, with pouch of healing items, and was out the door with dragon and flitter alongside. Ondine decided it'd be best to go to the infirmary, the best place to go in a situation like this, even as another roar echoed past her. With the Red Star overhead, the entire landscape looked vaguely strange, suddenly. She'd seen it before like this, but never with the thought that there might be wild Whers outside looking to kill. For a moment, thankfully just a moment, it almost looked like blood. The healer just ran faster. When she ran into the infirmary for a moment, they piled more first aid equipment and sent her after a Wherhealer who had just been there, sprinted towards the entrance.

The roar took Lyrnn by surprise. He'd been setting up his room, having just transferred today. And abruptly, a call to arms. Kind of an auspicious start to living in Dalibor Weyr. Especially since, he'd found out, the two other Wherhandlers in this area were another Blue and a Red. Definitely an auspicious start. But since he was trained a guard and weapons master, it was time to help out. Which meant, right now, getting going. He glanced over for a moment at Lyrsk, unsurprised to find the Wher already waiting for him by the door. Lyrsk wait. Lyrnn ready, then go. Wild Whers attacking. He nodded. With the rage in the cries out there, he might want something a bit better than simple leather, especially against other Whers. Chainmail shirt on his chest, the rest of his body got leather so that he could still move in it. Simple, black colored Wherhide leather was generally easier to move in than the chainmail.
Although, a few decades to build muscle helped in moving naturally in a chainmail shirt. Especially one that he'd designed and had fitted to him specifically.
Equipment checks went by like they were simple muscle memory. Longsword on his left side, crossbow on his right, and four knives knives. Checking the bolts for the crossbow, he nodded to Lyrsk, a faint smile crossing his face. He couldn't imagine life, now, without his Wher. It pleased him immeasurably when the two had built up such a bond that they knew what the other would do before it happened. And sure enough, the moment he nodded, Lyrsk was out the door, sniffing, eyes a blurring orange. The two moved quickly through the tunnels to the Weyr's entrance. Just a few people there, probably an entrance guard, but not many of them...
...except for the good force still within sight, out of the Wher. And that looked like a Red. Ausk angry. What do? He looked around, and then sighed. Nothing to do but to reach for Ausk and Audren, get instructions. Reaching respectfully through his Blue, he contacted that dangerous red mind. Lyrnn and Lyrsk reporting. We're at the entrance to the Weyr. Just transferred in today. Need me to find someone, something, or hold down the entrance? He wasn't sure if there were more people around the entrance than the few he saw, but it might be best if he stuck here to prevent an unbonded Wher from getting inside.

The Brown Wher gurgled unhappily to itself from its home. There were too many unhappy feelings in the air tonight. Why were there so many unhappies tonight? Yes, oh yes, so much unhappiness and pain. Perhaps to do with unfamiliar scent in the air, and all the blood. Yes, oh yes, that must be the cause, and how terrible that was indeed! He grumbled to himself as he looked out, watching the two-legged things with their Whers spill out across the sand. Too many red and orange eyes amongst them, yes, oh yes.
This wouldn't do. There must be happiness to balance out the sadness and the rage. And while he could be happy, here in his little den, that would hardly balance out the sad. Thus, happy someone else he must make. But who to make happy, the question this was! Yes, oh yes, this Brown wanted to make someone happy out there. There was no purpose in getting so angry, it just made the two-legged ones mad at you, and mad two-legged meant mad Whers, and mad Whers just meant death. He had seen it before, yes, oh yes!
But as he explored cautiously beyond his hiding spot, he saw that the entrance to the big mountain was covered by two-legged and their Whers! And big sharp things on them! Not that way, oh no. It would be best to go up and over the mountain. He'd been meaning to do it for some time now, but now he had purpose for it! To make two-legged, and Wher, and Dragon happy! Yes, oh yes, he decided. Dalsk hummed happily to himself, all knobbly and scarred, as he raced around the beach, away from two-legged currently out here and their angry, oh so angry Whers. His mission of happiness could not be destroyed by angry Wher! Up the side of the mountain he went, up the east side, eyes a whirling blue green.
Yes, oh yes, Dalsk would bring happiness to balance the pain and the sadness. Yes, oh yes.

L'xon awoke, certain it was Halventh that stirred him, though the dragonet was not strong in his shared senses just yet. It was a creeping doubt, unusual for the blue, that united them in anxious consciousness.
We have not yet received orders, Halventh greeted, with a robust calm L'xon was sure his spirited partner had been practicing on. He pulled on wherhide trousers and boots, slipping the first tunic he found over before he joined Halventh on the ledge. He could not see a thing beyond clouded starlight and shadowy guesses of figures in the Bowl below. He looked to Halventh, whose wide yellow eyes were resting on the south.
"What's happening?"
The blue's facets shifted toward him at the question, inner lids waxing sluggishly over the surfaces. L'xon was momentarily caught by how the eye he could see appeared to glow, almost golden. Halventh's throat bobbed and his entire head tipped down to get a better look at something below.
I think someone is in danger. L'xon sensed the readying tension in wing and leg in his own body more than he felt the clench of muscle where his hand rested upon Halventh. He steadied that impulse. Those squat things are going out to have a look. I guess that's their duty, but... Another self-imposed call to action was put down by L'xon, only to surge to tremendous forefront as a familiar shape slipped by. Wenth! Halventh chirped, extending the thought to vague impression upon the tan, but mostly keeping it to L'xon, as if her appearance provided an excuse.
The dragon's rider remained unswayed, and Halventh shut his wings. His head ducked again. What are they doing? he accused. The words weren't helpful, but L'xon got an impression of Candidates departing their barracks and making for the watchwhers' front lines. Still, no one had told him to go and interfere with them- I am telling you. This is something we can do, and neglecting it would be...wasteful. Lazy, the blue growled. L'xon was almost certain Halventh had only paid the Candidates mind in the first place because of notions he had inherited from his ex-guard Impressee.
And now the man would have to pay his dragon heed. Halventh looked at him, and after a moment L'xon nodded and got a leg over the blue's strapless neck.
"Careful," was his only caution, wrapping his fingers around the rough neckridge ahead of his throne as Halventh pushed off the ledge with appropriate gentleness. The dragonet was not so sensitive to Ciali and Cilia, whom he arrowed down upon, landing on one foot and pivoting to face the pair before he stamped down his other limbs in the stone Bowl. Halventh immediately surged a step forward, lowering his head to human-girl-level and announcing his objection with a trumpeting in their faces.
L'xon quelled the subsequent rumbling so that he could be heard. "If you guys could return to the barracks, Halventh and I would appreciate it." He tilted his head, making out glimpses of heavy leather on the two. "This is a matter for the Weyr's whers, not...wher Candidates." He had never seen them out in the day, so the guess was at least educated. Halventh lifted his head, cupping his wings toward the young women in an unsubtle blockage of their pass. He actually got out one flap of wind at them before L'xon realized what he was doing and forced him back to mere mantling. "He says there's a person setting up an infirmary camp. You can go help there. You won't need the...armor, for that."

Somewhere in his whimpering, Ekuda had started to fall asleep again. But the new knock at his door shot through him like his body was one giant nerve, and he turned his head fruitlessly toward his windows, which were now shuttered and thus not emitting any clarification. The voice was gentler though. He rolled back onto his side, considering the request and the events that might have spawned it.
"J-just a minute," came his faint reply, his words struggling to get out from under the bed and through the door. Ekuda climbed out, breathless despite his lack of exertion, and muttered another "just a minute" before he shambled onto his feet and dragged one of his home glows open. He looked down, then made awkward high steps across the floor to the warm rug beside his wardrobe. He put on his battle armor: a fresh set of underclothes and a thin robe. He did not have slippers, he had jury-rigged soles with thin bands of wherhide that strapped them to his toes, while they hung off the heel at every step.
He opened his front door, wind shoving his long black hair away from his face and ruffling the edges of his robe. He crossed his arms over his chest for warmth. "What's going on?" he demanded, looking from the young woman to the enormous glowing eyes of her dragon beyond. Though he was knowledgeable of Dalibor's history, he was finding it difficult to fathom...well, anything. He staggered past Aylina, straightening as he caught a whiff of rotten fish. But old Slosk wouldn't try his luck against a dragon. At least, Ekuda thought so.
The dolphineer turned to look at something past his own humble hut, then faced Aylina again. "If you want to evacuate someone, get the fishcrafters on leave first. I need t-" He swayed, looking around at the unrevealing darkness. "I need to speak with my dolphins. Get the fishermen, please. They're old men. You can tell who's home by where the lights are on." He paced up so that he was even with the tanrider, then pointed to a figure standing at the door of another stonebound cot. "There, there. Snap them up, quick as fire gir-" He glanced sideward at Aylina. She had a few inches on him. "-woman."
With that he attempted to trundle past Wenth's tremendous form, to the pier where the dolphin's bell rested.

It was the urgent tone that awakened her first. Kire hadn’t heard her best friend talk like that in, well, ever. A shock of fear ran through the young handler as she rolled quickly from her bed and grabbed her boots and some decent clothes.
“Kisk! Kisk get up! You have to wake up something’s horribly wrong. There are wild whers in the Weyr!”
What…?
The sleepy Kisk looked over at her and then sprung to his feet with excitement, he could smell Cask, the wher he almost considered a brother. After a moment, the words of his handler seemed to register.
Wild… That good! AM PLAY!? Yes! Kisk am always play!
Kisk ran at the door and scratched it. Kire stopped and knelt, pulling his head to face her.
“Kisk. Remember all that we have learned. These are not friendly whers.”
Kisk am think all whers be friend! All friend Kisk am have. Kisk am best friend wher. Cask think Kisk be best friend.
These whers are different. They will hurt your friends. They have already hurt our friends.
They not hurt BestKire… You stay. Kisk no want them hurt BestKire!
We have to help it’s our duty.
As she went to open the door she noticed Camea must have left but also, Kisk jumped in front of the door trying to stop her leaving.
Kisk am no want BestKire be hurt. Kisk am love! No love be hurt.
The black keened softly and looked at her desperately.
“You can protect me. We will be safe, don’t worry.”
She didn’t know how reassured the wher was but he stepped away from the door and together they ran out into the corridor searching for Camea, aiming to catch up with her. Eventually, they found her.
“Camea, we’ll stand with you. We must not let them in.”
Kire had a determined face but she would never falter by her friend’s side. She reached out and touched Camea’s shoulder in what she hoped was a reassuring manner. At the sight of Cask, Kisk had waggled excitedly but he was a lot more sedate than normal. He could feel now that there was more going on than he understood.

Lachan looked about his quarters, arms folded across his chest, contemplating where to put everything. He glanced at his wife across the room and a small smile crept across his face. She glanced up and caught his gaze, considering him for a moment before smiling back as she continued to unload the few boxes they had brought with them from High Reaches. They had only just moved in that morning and it would take some getting used to he was sure. Still, at least he had a while to get used to it – and in that time maybe he could spend some good time with his wife again. He glanced over at the wher curled up in the corner, watching the two lazily. Lachask met his gaze and pointedly yawned before turning his eyes away and studying a speck on the ground. He needed to be out there, showing everyone what he could do. He was a powerful and strong wher, what were they doing here with all these useless boxes? Suddenly his ears pricked and he raised his head sharply, cocked to one side before jumping to his feet. Lachan and Kayles both turned around and looked at the bronze, Kayles’ expression flickering a moment before she replaced the smile on her face. Lachan glanced at her apologetically, to which she simply inclined her head and said nothing, bending once again over the boxes. Feeling divided, Lachan nevertheless rushed over to Lachask
“What? What is it?”
Said to Lachask, fought. Wild whers, helped said Lachask, Ausk.
Without another word, Lachask bounded out of the cavern and headed towards the weyr entrance, wings extended impressively and chest out as best he could manage while maintaining a fast pace. Lachan followed as best he could, unfamiliar with the layout of the bowl or even where his wher was going, just hoping and trusting Lachask knew where he was going.
After several minutes of running, bronze a fair way ahead and just within eyesight, they both reached the entrance to the bowl and slowed, coming even with each other. Lachan, thoroughly out of breath, did not like too much what he saw. Although he figured that the four holding the entrance to the weyr, it still concerned him that the whers seemed to be approaching from the wild in the first place. He glanced at Lachask, who glanced back.
Defended east, go said Lachask. Lachan decided.
The wher was right, it appeared as though the entrance to the bowl was slightly more defended than the east and so – making a split decision – Lachan veered towards the east, heading along the eastern wall, partially to defend but mostly to scout. He continued on a little way, keenly aware of the awful sounds of growling shredding through the night, simply glad that Lachask had better night vision than him. He soon became aware, however, of a growling noise emitting from the bronze beside him. He felt a sudden loose of anger crash through the mind link as the wher became enraged at the violence he could sense just ahead.
Wher! Said Lachask, listened! Leave!
Lachan heard Lachask shout before the wher plunged off into the night. Lachan waited only a split second before following him, eventually coming upon what seemed to be a brown handler and his wher defending against the vicious attacks of a green - Wrynri - although Lachan himself did not know who the handler was. As if to make matters worse, there was a blue that seemed to be similarly attacking.
“Shards”
Lachan muttered under his breath as Lachask let forth a loud and guttural snarl. |

This was bad.
That one thought beat through Rakir's brain as he looked at the handlers around him, not quite sure what was going on and yet somewhere he knew that the worst probably had happened. There were distant noises, distant troubles, and then there were the ones that were closer to them all. Rakisk plopped his hind-end onto the ground and snorted, gurgling as he peered into the dark with large eyes. Yes, there was something wrong as His thought, though the question was what exactly.
Green.
Rakir looked at his Bronze with a tilt of his head, not quite sure what the giant lump was getting at. After all he had said a single sharding..."color." The word was said faintly as it hit Rakir, Rakisk bristling as he watched the pale shape move through the trees and stand a good dragon length or two from the group of handlers. The almost white female raised her gnarled head, tasting the air with a tongue that snaked out in a quick movement. Missisk like scent. Missisk want more....yes, more be good. Missisk kill now.
A faint laughing gurgle could be heard in the wher's voice as she slunk toward the group, quite uncaring that she was a simple green going up against much larger opponents. Oh no, that didn't matter, she wanted her blood now, and that was that. Red not have all fun. Missisk kill now yes. Staring at the handlers and whers, the green looked from one side of the group to the other, her muscles bunched and ready to pounce...and then she was in the air streaking toward the one that was closest.
