Eondith's loss had siphoned R'fus back into his own head. As the dragon flew down, lonely, from the sky, R'fus ghosted past Kio and found his salvation. The glass vials clinked under the trembling of his fingers and, with the bitter taste still on his tongue, he returned to the rest of his desire. He was still sick with wanting; his stomach turned at the scent of Kio's hair. As the night pressed onward, false clarity infected R'fus mind. The fellis picked him up, brushed him off, and set him back down as a new man. He felt fresh and clear as the miracle liquid.
He couldn't count the times he'd whispered 'thank Faranth' into Kio's skin.
When morning drew itself up out of the horizon, R'fus' pains surfaced. He held a slim, breathing body against him, as loose as he would hold a fellis flower. Inside, his bones held tightly to his heart and lungs and his skull seemed to crush his brain. He'd been terrible to himself. He'd deprived himself of the one thing that made him feel normal, and for what? For some sad kid still in quarantine? Thread could swallow Fe'an whole and R'fus wouldn't care - or, at least, that's what he told himself.
He rolled over onto his back. He bit back a groan at the stiffness of his muscles and the chill as the early-morning air met his bare skin. He was feeling too much, he realized. Had he really burned through that last dose so quickly? It was distressing to think about it. He'd go over to the dresser and put back another hit when he really needed to, he resolved. For now, he'd stay put. Kio was still asleep.
He turned back onto his side. In the dim glowlight, Kio was silhouetted, turned away from him. Somewhere in the room, there was a rustle of leather wings and a quiet chirp: Molly. Eondith slept blankly outside. R'fus figured he should have felt at home. Aches aside, he was surrounded by familiarity. The strain of the night before didn't matter. But still, something didn't feel quite right.
His heart tugged to be around Kio. Nothing had ever been entirely right about Kio, but R'fus kept coming back. The bluehandler might as well have been made of fellis, too, because R'fus thought of him all the time. Wanted him. Needed him, even, but for what? For nothing good. A restrained sigh moaned out of him and he shut his eyes.
For what?
R'fus drifted back into the shallow waters of sleep. [/blockquote]

The previous night had been a strange one indeed. Strange, but fulfilling in it's own way. R'fus' need was refreshing, especially with his annoying son suddenly around. That was a fun new addition though, Kio had to admit. Interesting for observation, irritating for his own needs. Kio was fairly conflicted about the boy's involvement, but in the end his interest would win out. At least the boy was safely in quaratine now, so he had R'fus to himself for a time.
Kio thought on this as he feigned sleep, aware of R'fus' movements around him. So he'd finally woken up. About time. Kio hadn't been awake all that long himself, and although he'd been glad for a moment alone with his thoughts, it was getting boring. But he didn't move, prefering to lay where he was until R'fus decided to lay back down. While the act itself was enjoyable, seeing R'fus' pained reactions in the morning was a bit more interesting to him. Addiction was an interesting thing, wasn't it? To fellis or to another person, it was all the same.
Though, he still didn't move, still stuck in his own thoughts. He certainly did think the bluerider was intriguing, yes. Was there more, though? Did he care about him? Maybe a little. He had tried to convince himself it was more like the love one had for a pet, though it probably wasn't. He liked the other man a lot. It wasn't quite enough of a care to actually "love" him, if Kio was even capable of feeling that, but it was definitely a like. Yeah, Kio decided. That was a good word.
With his thoughts safely in order, Kio finally sat up and stretched, cracking his shoulders. Kio reached behind his head to tighten his long ponytail, and then glanced down at R'fus' possibly sleeping form next to him. He watched R'fus sleep for a moment, then put a hand in the man's hair, feeling quite pleased with himself. It'd been a satisfactory night. He contemplated waking up the bluerider himself, but decided against it. Besides, he'd probably wake up just from Kio's hand in his hair. So he enjoyed the tranquil atmosphere, for now.

Sleep had taken him again swiftly, but released him just as easily. Kio's touch was the catalyst. He sighed quietly and shifted in the bed. He brought the bridge of his nose to Kio's back, curled around him, and brushed a loose hand across the handler's skin. It was an intimate gesture that began to feel wrong very quickly. He had meant to kiss the small of Kio's spine, maybe, and hold gently to his hips. He wanted to covet the beautiful thing that had come to him, but he began to have doubts. A few hours ago, it may not have seemed out of place. A little tender for the mood, perhaps, but acceptable. Expected. R'fus let out a rough 'mm' and unfolded out onto his back instead. He heard pink Molly swoop quietly across the room. Her claws clicked against wood as she traveled across the headboard to perch on the post.
R'fus arched his back and stretched out his abdomen and ribcage; yawned. He supposed he didn't feel too bad - it was just like he fell asleep in the wrong position after exerting himself - but it was still a far cry from the absolute bliss that high pleasure afforded him. It made him feeling frighteningly mortal, vulnerable, and old. He was only 36, but he had not necessarily been kind to himself as of late. At least he still had something to hold onto. First, there was his business. Second, whatever it was that kept him fretting about Fe'an. Third, Kio. It was good to know that he could still be wanted, sometimes. And he supposed that it was alright - wanting and being wanted. It worked.
"Morning," he breathed. His hair was a terrible mess when he finally lifted it off the pillow, accented by the darkness under his eyes and the stubble that nearly threatened to be called a beard. He sat up against the cool wood of the headboard and couldn't help but groan a little. Molly's eyes twinkled down at the two of them from where she sat, bright even in the dim glowlight. Any issues she had once had with Kio were long gone. She was getting quite old, too, and was very cynical and indifferent for a firelizard. She yawned, too, and skittered down into R'fus lap where he idly stroked her.
Then, out of the silence, R'fus spoke. "Sorry," he said. He was looking down at Molly, but he meant it for Kio - though, if there was anyone he should have been apologizing to, it should have been Eondith. "I was a real shardin' dimglow yesterday. Feelin' a little too brave. Thought I might've been able to ride it out to the end but," he shook his head, "Ah, well, it was just a real shardin' dim thing to do." Brave enough, almost, to commit to getting clean - but only almost, and maybe it was that part that made him feel so bad. He had hurt himself for no gain, because he was weak and afraid. Great. R'fus' movements were unexpected, though not unwanted. Kio was mostly amused by the man's intimacy, something he'd never really thought that R'fus was capable of off of the fellis. Of course, it was definitely very wrong, not that Kio ever cared about being wrong. Their relationship was pretty much the epitome of disfunctional, but Kio had always found disfunctional things a lot more interesting. He yawned, cracking his neck and idly tightening his ponytail.
"Morning," he greeted casually, glad to see that R'fus wasn't just about to chase him away. Though, why would he? Despite their disfunction, the man had been a lot more accepting of him as of late. Perhaps it was the addition of an annoying, meddly son that made him value Kio a bit more, though he couldn't be positive. It was nice, though, for R'fus to want him so much. He barely even felt the desire to go find someone else to spend a night with, he was so pleased with their relationship. Though that bothered him, a bit. Attachment wasn't something he ever really enjoyed feeling. He convinced himself it was like the attachment one would feel to a pet or other plaything. Nothing serious.
They fell into silence again, and R'fus sat with his firelizard, who Kio had never particularly liked. She was fine now, at least. Gotten used to him, Kio thought with a slight smirk. Sharding little demon, she was. He yawned again, mostly out of a slight awkward feeling. He wasn't going to say anything to break the silence. That was R'fus' job, after all, it'd been Kio who had come to save him last night. He wanted to smile again at the thought. But R'fus decided to finally break the silence, and so Kio's attention was back on him.
An apology, but no eye-contact. He was definitely ashamed of the way he'd acted. Kio shrugged, with a slight smile that almost could have been genuine, if it was anyone other than Kio. "You don't have to apologize to me. I certainly didn't mind," his smile warped into more of a smirk at that, he was feeling fairly smug right now. In Kio's opinion, however, the dragon was probably the one that owed R'fus an apology for chasing. This was one of the reasons why he'd stuck to whers rather than dragons, afterall. That much loss of control would drive him completely mad.
"Don't be too hard on yourself," Kio wasn't really one to comfort people, so he wasn't going to try all that hard. He didn't want to ruin the mood, however. "There was no real harm done."
