OOC: OKAY. I am copying Chek because her idea was so much fun, and also credit to Sal who came up with the idea for a talent show post! This is a scenario thread, so each post will be independent. You get one post per character (feel free to enter as many characters as you'd like) who, by hook or crook, is up on 'stage' performing their talent (or their wher's/dragon's/pet's talent), contending for a mystery IC prize. How they wound up there is up to you—motivated by said mysterious IC prize (no idea what it is, use your imagination), blackmail, kidnapped and tossed on stage, they are all viable options—and feel free to simply blame Tay's exuberantly charming persuasion skills (see 'kidnapped and tossed on stage' above. Or actual persuasion, whichever). The next post will be someone else's character's performance, and then another, and so on and so forth. I have a brown fire lizard from the market, and I will give it to the person whose talent scenario amuses me the most! I may or may not post in between, don't wait for me.
Remember this is an ooc contest, so it isn't necessarily the best talent I'm looking for, it's the most amusing post about a talent competition. Most of you know by now I have a terrible-easy-to-trigger sense of humor and am not too particular, so run wild! Disasters are encouraged. Can't figure out how to get 'em up there? Tay is available for your needs--PM me. I'll let this go until probably mid-Julyish Tension. It could be a good thing, Tayerdan mused, thinking of stretched muscles and taut ropes. A good thing when it was physical. When it hung in the air like a poisonous cloud…less so. He understood physical tension well enough. Ligaments and forces, gravity and strain. He didn’t get this kind of tension, this floating animosity among people who should be united, and he decided he didn’t much care for it. Which, he sighed (though he smiled as he did so), is probably how all this came about. It wasn’t an event. It wasn’t something he’d planned. It had just sort of happened, and hey, Tay was always happy to go along for the ride, especially on a restday when he hadn’t much else to do. It had started with one of his younger patients, one of the weyrchildren (he really hated calling them brats—they were just enthusiasic. It was charming!), had been in dire need of a distraction in order to drink her medicine. So Tay had started a story, a silly story about a lost baby wherry who found a runner and thought it was its Mamma, and how it grew up thinking it was just an ugly, feathery runner, until one day there was a big race, the biggest of all runnerraces in all of Pern, and when the wherry entered, everyone laughed, and kept laughing as he fell behind as usual, so far behind, but the wherry was determined to win! So determined that he…spread his wings and flew! First over the finish line! A wherry wins it all! He’d been telling the story loudly, lost in the narrative himself as he dashed across the room pawing his feet like a runner and spreading his arms to charge like an awkwardly running wherry, whinnying and cawing until he’d gotten himself quite an audience…and not just of littles. But they’d demanded more. So Tay had started juggling. And more. So he’d sang until one of the ladies from the kitchens had thrown a boot at him and said she could do better. And she could, and did. And after her, someone in the gathered crowd had claimed that she could sing but they could play a mean gitar. And they had. And now, all eyes were back on Tay, eager for the next act. Grinning hugely, he scrambled atop a boulder and shouted. "Come on! Come one, come all! Do your best! Win a fabulous prize! It’ll be a—" The bugle of a dragon drowned him out, but he didn’t notice, laughing wildly and hopping down off the boulder and lunging to grab someone, anyone, and give the stranger a cheerful kiss on the cheek of good luck, whirling them by the shoulders and shoving them up to center ‘stage’—a clearing of sorts in the middle of the people. "You’re up! Show us whatcha got!" |

A black wher had not only snuck away from his handler he had also stolen her child. Well, not really, she had climbed onto his back and Kisk had taken off outside. He wanted to play with the little one! He wanted to teach her how to run and play and dance like he could because he was the very best there was. Kirryl was holding on tight to the wher’s spiny back, almost lying down. She was nearly two and much steadier on her feet than she had been once upon a time. Kirryl was also speaking a lot more, the words forming coherent sentences.
“Kirryl want go.”
Unfortunately, those sentences sounded a lot like Kisk’s and Dask’s rather than a human’s speech patterns. Kisk began prancing to many delighted giggles from the girl on his back as he walked out into the Weyrbowl. There were so many people there! This was ever so exciting and the wher could not contain his wiggles and waggles of utter enthusiasm. PEOPLE! People were the best! All people were the best! Well not as best as his BestKire but many of them were very good indeed.
Kisk trotted his way over to the crowd, bugling and then snuffling his way forwards to where Tayerdan was standing. He didn’t know who the man was but he smelled nice! Friendly smelling man!
Best? Best? KISK AM BEST! KISK AM VERY BEST!
He shouted it into the mind of the candidate and then looked behind him when the candidate spoke. He was confused. What was he supposed to show them?
Kisk am got MiniKisk’s and MiniDask’s!
He turned to show the male the girl on his back and then bounced happily, Kirryl moving dangerously from side to side. He didn’t know the person who had been grabbed but shoved past all the people to the middle of the circle.
Kisk am show! KISK AM BEST DANCE! AM SHOW MINIKISK’SDASK’SONE HOW BE DANCE!
With the toddler holding on as tightly as she could, Kisk began running circles to delighted laughter from the child and waggling his whole body. He was dancing! He was the very best dancer! Wiggling his wings, he jumped up and down, only managing to balance Kirryl with his wings. In fact, it was more skilled that somehow the toddler was holding onto the whirring ball of black energy.
Finally, to finish his dance, Kisk ran another tight circle before standing on his hind legs. Kirryl’s left hand came loose so it looked as though she was a part of the ‘finishing stance’ and then slid down Kisk’s back to land on her bottom in the dirt. She didn’t care. She was clapping her hands.
“Again! More? More?”
Kisk walked over and snuffled the little girl who raised her hands and held onto his muzzle before using it to help herself to her feet. Kisk was the very best!
Kirryl be know how dance? He asked the girl, Kisk am best teach! Teach best for dance like Kisk!

Curiosity had led Tamren to checking out the crowd of people who were gathering out in the Weyrbowl, and the mention of a prize, even if he didn't hear what that prize actually was, kept him sticking around. Fortunately, Tamren needed few excuses to show off, and when it was time for the next act to start and the apparent ringleader of the event looked about for someone else to take the stage, Tamren went willingly.
He grinned and gave the crowd a cheery wave. "Hey everyone. I'm Tamren, a candidate, and formerly of the Tanner Crafthall." This introduction was mostly to buy himself time, as he was thinking of what exactly to do now that he was up here. That was the hard part. Perhaps he should have thought of that first. In his home Hold, he would have considered growing a magnificent beard to be a suitable talent. Unfortunately, despite his best efforts, he couldn't manage more than a bit of scraggly stubble (soon, he kept telling himself). His understandable wariness in the face of giant, creepy pillbugs hanging around Dalibor was noteworthy, but it was hard to spin a fear of pillies into a "talent". He did eventually think of something, however. He was going to tell a ghost story.
"Once, there was a man," Tamren intoned, "He was a tall man, and he had a huge, bushy beard. He was very proud of it. And this man liked to go out to a nearby lake around sunset and into the night, fishing. Or maybe just to be alone, whatever. Anyway, he had been warned many times not to go to the lake at night because a ghost haunted the shores, but the bearded man did not believe them and went anyway.
"One night, after a few hours of unsuccessful fishing, the man was packing up to head back to his Hold when he heard something behind him, like something was moving among the rocks. He turned around...there was nothing there. He started walking...but then he heard footsteps of something walking along behind him. He kept turning around to see what it was, but every time, the trail behind him was empty. He started walking faster...so did the footsteps.
"Eventually, the man did make it back to his home; at this point, he was practically running. He did not even dare to look behind him anymore, for the footsteps were right at his feet now. He just slammed the door behind him and went to bed." Tamren paused thoughtfully before coming to the end of the story.
"Later that night," he droned, "The man woke up, thinking he had felt something moving among his blankets. He didn't see anything, but he heard a strange shuffling sound from underneath his bed. The man scratched his beard thoughtfully, (it was suddenly itchy) but then he stopped and glanced down. In the glowlight, he could see hordes of tiny hatchling pillies crawling in and around his magnificent beard. They were everywhere, and he screamed!" The final words of the story, Tamren practically yelled, and then added, "The man was never heard from again." With a bow, he left the stage.

Tay moved back to the center of the clearing to announce the next contestant.
One person had other plans.
She'd been feeling down for far too long. Where had her spine gone? Where her bravery? Long ago, her sister had told her that if she wanted to be looked up to, to feel good about herself, she had to make herself known, and that was exactly what Kira was going to do.
She would show them all.
"NOT SO FAST!" she boomed, standing up on a small ledge in the rocks near the clearing, drawing eyes to her. "I have the talent to beat them all! I can tumble quicker than a pillie, be more daring than a Rider in Threadfall, and FLY better than a dragon in Flight!" She tugged on the rope beside her that had been secured to a rocky outcropping just above her head. Kira had checked and double-checked the knot to make sure that it would bear her weight, and had tested the rock to make sure that it would as well.
Kira took it in both her hands and swung out and down. It was a magnificent swung, tossing her above the heads of some of the crowd, a wide arc that should have had her landing in the center of the clearing.
Should have had.
The rock had been worn away by years of rain and wind, and while it had held her during the test, the second, more vigorous requirement of holding her weight, as little as it was, simply was too much for the stone. It broke away with a clatter, freeing the rope to the winds in hopes that it would find happiness in the clear blue skies. Kira was the sole creature keeping it from the joys it sought, and both of them came crashing down to earth in a steep slope.
The only words she thought to yell before slamming into the ground were, "MIFTH IN FLIGHT."
Her performance had turned out to be performance art. A moment passed before she raised a hand to signal that she was okay, and got herself up to trudge away to the Infirmary, sore and bruised and embarrassed, but hoping she had done the Blue proud.

The monotony of Weyr life had been eased.
Eased thanks to one fine young man, who had been an unknown face (to Dardranel) in the current group of Candidates until now, the red-haired, hotheaded Candidate found herself in the middle of a crowd. A basket of sand oh-so-generously lent to her (by a mysterious pink flit in a hat and cape) was in her grip. It had originally been for an experiment only for herself, but now...
She listened intently to Tamren's story - unlike Nora, who giggled with Aypoth somewhere else in the audience.
Just as Nora and her pink were about to enter, Kira loudly declared her arrival.
Nora and Dardranel watched breathlessly, wincing as she hit the ground. Aypoth let out a worried bugle cut short as Kira got up and limped off to the Infirmary.
Nora opened her mouth once again to enter, but that once again was interrupted.
"Uh, hey! Hi, everyone! Yeah, I'm Dardranel, a Candidate! And I volunteer as tribu - a participating person." Dardranel raised the basket of sand for everyone to see as she galloped towards the clearing. And filled her face with a smirk. "Might be wondering what I'll be doing with this, huh? Weather. Yeah! I can run. And we're gonna see if I can run so fast around this sand," She dropped the sand in a neat pile on the ground, letting her long hair drop down too in a wave of auburn. "that it becomes...a spinning..sandstorm."
With a dramatic jump up at that, the girl steadied herself and prepared. Deep breaths were needed.
"3..." Stance. "2..." Breath. "1..." Grin. "Go." At first she circled the sand in a mild jog, but that "at first" was a mere moment.
Dardranel accelerated. The world turned into a sweet bliss of blurs and sound, and she couldn't quite see the sand without slowing but ever so slightly, it began to follow the wind of her run.
And then came the downfall.
"Faster - faster, fast - gottagofaster!" She mumbled. But the Candidate couldn't stop now, and she was terrified. She'd done the unthinkable. Gone too fast. Now she couldn't stop spinning, and couldn't escape running in circles. "Nooooooooo!"
Dardranel "circleran" off "stage". Everything was getting so blurry...
She fell, laying absolutely still, red hair dappled with sand.
And let out what was possibly the loudest snore in the history of Dalibor.

"shard it Mira! don't shove me! I can walk on my own pow-ACK! Aela don't you start thwacking me!". It wouldn't take long to show who was putting up such a fuss; as a tallish male candidate was herded through the crowd. Mira cheerfully piped up "aw c'mon you said you'd like to try and do something fun together and this seems like fun Randi! even Aela agreed". Randiel mock-glared over his broad shoulder at his blackrider sister as he replied "I agreed to help you practice your little tricks with your own pets while you got em to 'dance' I never agreed to be made a fool of in pu-ACK! SHARD IT AELA!".
Despite bellowing at Aela for tail-whacking him again there was still some good humour in his tone. Not much since he had no shelling clue why his sister wanted him out here so bad. But at least enough to show he might be grousing about but he wasn't actually upset. Whether that would remain his attitude after this remained to be seen. Malinoth for his part had hung back not thinking folks would appreciate him shouldering through to help herd Randi to the front of the crowd. Though he did poke his bonded mentally do you really think he'll go along with your idea Mine?, he doesn't seem to want to be made out to look like a wherrybrain.... Mira had to muffle her chuckle at Malinoth's words; helped inadvertently by the others who had gone ahead of her drowning her out. When she finally ceased chuckling she tried to focus her thought to him oh hush Mali; he's got a sense of humour he'll live, besides Aela seemed to like the suggestion when I got Asher to send it to her.
What Randiel was being kept in the dark about was the fact that Mira had somehow plotted out a way to use him as a prop of a sort while playing a new to the Weyr song on her instrument. One that might be very familiar to Terran children; Pop goes the weasel, even if the old words were lost to Pernese minds. Once the space for the stage was cleared Mira chivvied her elder sibling into view of the crowd "hello all who stand to watch this funloving little talent show! I'm sure a few of you have heard me practising different tunes when not doing chores or the like". Then she grinned deviously behind her sibling "today however I'm showing a 'new old' tune with my brother the Candidate Randiel and his Pink Aela's aid". As he was introduced the somewhat sleepy male waved to the crowd not knowing what the shell his sis had planned still.
A 'blindness' that was quick to change when his sister started to play a particularly...poppy tune. One he remembered Mira trying to practice when she was littler, that had the then unforeseen effect of incurring his own flit and Asher to 'attack' him playfully. "Mira don't you da-ACK! Aela! Asher! Whatever your name is STOP IT!". Nymeria didn't experience the fun of this when Aela and Asher had but thanks to the older pair's fragments of memory she was taking part happily enough as the trio of flits would fly around int a spiralling loop before nearing Randiel long enough for each flit to separately THWAP him on the noggin at the 'pop' in the tune. Or really pop him anywhere once Randiel started doing a funny little dance to try and dodge the 'attacks' "shaffit Mira! I will make you pay for this!".
In response to his threat Mira only muffledly giggled into her instrument as she kept playing until she got through four go arounds of the simple little tune. As by that time she was having too hard a time not laughing her head off. Even if she did finally get it together long enough to look at the crowd "I hope this got the siblings in the crowd to laugh a bit; this was something I accidentally started when I was little though I could only get through one playthrough of that tune before my brother and our flits antics made me laugh too much". She would have continued talking but looking in her sibling's direction made the weyrling 'eep' and dive for cover in the crowd. But Randiel didn't get very far in his attempt to make her pay for her actions as Aela saved Mira via thwacking her human one last time then flying off to make him chase her instead; trill laughing the whole time.
Once her sibling had tore after Aela in the direction of the candidate barracks, Mira peeked out of the crowd "did the sourpuss leave? I was about to say 'and I thank Randiel for sitting through that like a good boy too...". Malinoth privately responded I am not playing shield if he tries to pay you back for that at all mine.... However Malinoth's tone did have a tint of laughter to it this time so even he saw it was funny. So perhaps Randiel would to; at least if Mira 'won' then shared the prize with him...whatever it might be if her 'act' was funny enough to win. Meanwhile a 'giggly' Asher and Nymeria had perched on their person's shoulders while Aela led her person on a merry chase.

ooc; sorry for the wait, all! I will leave this open one more day, in case there’s any super last minute entries, and if no one posts before 10:00 PM EST tonight or PM's me that they'd like to, I will consult with my SUPER SECRET PANEL OF JUDGES to decide a winner. Not gonna be easy!! Thanks for playing with me--I have giggled a great deal.
Kisk am best? Show me!" Tay crowed, completely charmed, wiggling his lingers in greeting to the little girl on Kisk's back as he also greeted the wher. She was awfully small to be a handler, but hey, what'd he know? And then, he danced! Oh, how he danced! He wiggled! He waggled! He had moves like Jagger [/s] such enthusiasm that iwas infections, and Tayerdan found himself swaying in place, clapping his hands with a laugh, utterly delighted—and impressed—with the black wher that moved and grooved and wiggled and jiggled. He blew an appreciative two-finger wherry whistle through his front teeth, sharp, loud and clear as encouragement, but stepped forward, worried, when the little girl toppled off. She quickly righted herself, and Tay gave one final cheer. " What a pair! What a performance! Who’s next?" The boy spun, and then grinned as a fellow candidate volunteered. Once there was a man… A story! Tay swung himself onto a boulder and crossed his legs to listen with the same rapt attention as the littles in the crowd. He stroked his chin as Tamren described the man’s beard. He’d always kept his own chin clear, but the image of a big, billowingly bushy beard pleased him immensely. He leaned forward as the man in the story ran home and was followed, holding his breath and releasing it as the man seemed to arrive safely. Then—then there was something under his bed! Tay gasped in horror and yelped with the littles as Tamren shouted the last line. He laughed, warm and amused, clapped and hooted. " Never seen from again! Poor fellow! What a fate! What a fate! Top that, my friends! Let’s see, how about—"-- NOT SO FAST!Startled, Tay glanced upwards, seeking out the voice, raising a hand to shield his eyes from the sun and spotting the petite performer at last. Her introduction made him cheer in anticipation, and he dutifully bowed and cleared the stage so she would have room for her daring acrobatics, gently scooping up one of the weybrats trying to climb up to get a better look, and setting him down a safe distance. He held his breath once again, as her magnificent swing began and surged to his feet when the rock tumbled, aghast. He sprinted forward to help her to her feet—" Are you okay?" amid hysterical laughter from the crowd, well acquainted with the perpetually failing dragon. One particular member of the crowd quite suddenly began choking on his klah, a brown fire lizard on his shoulder hiding its face with a wing. The pair, scarlet, slunk quickly to the back of the crowd, before the man, unable to stop himself, dissolved into a snort of laughter. Satisfied that the acrobatic candidate was in good hands, Tay flashed her a grin and gently clapped a hand on his shoulder as he called for the next contestant, and a redheaded candidate clamored up. A sandstorm? Sounded interesting! Tay leaned against his perch—once again fetching the wayward weyrbat who wanted a better look—and leaned forward as the girl began to run. He jumped up to catch her when he realized with some alarm that she was out of control but it was too late. He ran over, checking her pulse, her— snooooore. Grinning, Tay shrugged out of his overtunic and folded it to place under the girl’s head. " She’s alright!" He stepped aside to allow Mirandal and Randi—and their fire lizards—through, tapping his foot to the jaunty tune Mira played, mouth dropping open in surprise as the flits promptly thwapped the taller boy. Biting his lip (because really, he felt terrible for the poor fellow) Tay nevertheless gave into helpless laughter, but he swallowed it after a moment out respect for the boy’s pride, stifled into small giggles and a wide, crooked smile. As the pair finished, and Mira spoke to the crowd, Tay’s smile froze in surprise, fading into a wince, but he shook his head and tapped his cheek once, and managed to bring the smile back though it was small now. " Too fun! Beauty and the Battered! A round of applause for 'em, eh?" [/blockquote][/size]

Nora sighed, half in actual relief and half in actual relief that maybe her turn would be soon. Aypoth was giddy with excitement for what she was planning...
Her fellow weyrling's performance (with her flits and brother and dragon) had Nora choke on her drink. Or she would have, were it not for the fact she had none. She and Aypoth clapped and cheered for the hilarious performance.
"Nice one!" Nora grinned.
It seemed no one else was going at the moment. Now was their chance - for real!
Nora dashed on the rock "stage", Aypoth sproinging onto it.
Greetings, everyone! Those were some wonderful performances, wouldn't you agree? Now I and NoraMine would like to perform 'Tongue Twisters' for you! We hope you'll like it! With a mimic of what she saw the humans do, Aypoth tried to clear her throat, before opening her mouth and letting her green forked tongue loll out, twisting it into a loop. Satisfied, the pink took a deep breath as she mentally discussed the act with Nora.
And a one...
"Two!"
Three...
"Four!" Four!
Triantan and Imni hovered in the background, starting the beat of the song by cheeping as Nora tapped her foot to the rhythm.
How many fish could a flappy flit flip... The pink began slowly and dramatically. ...If a flappy flit could...
"Bom bom bommm...." Nora added.
Flip fish?
With that, the real fun began. Readying herself once more, Aypoth took another breath before preparing her mindvoice.
Oh, how many fish could a flappy flit flip if a flappy flit could flip fish? Flipping flippy fish a flappy flit could flip if a flappy flit could flip fish! But the flipping flappy flit was flimsy and it flipped...not manyflipping flappy flattering fish! The flattering fish flattered the flimsy flappy flit and flipped the shar - er, flards – flaway! The flimsy flappy flit flopped, a flaky flounder... What would it do? Here the dragon took a beat's worth of rest from the extremely quick song slash tongue twister.
Well, it flipped as many flipflapping flattering fish as the floundering flit could.... One more line, then the big finale.
And that's the...fleetness of the flappy floundering flaky flimsy flit whooo flippeeeddd... Aypoth took the deepest breath of all, though she was nowhere near as puffed up as a certain prickly black wher could get.
FIIIIIIIISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Aypoth flopped down for a moment, before concluding their performance officially.
I hope you all enjoyed that! Fish have been something we've all been seeing a lot recently... The pink bounced off stage with Nora and the small fair, quite tired.
