He was sitting in the dining hall. It probably shouldn't have been any more exciting than that. His clothes, however, added a bit more spice to the situation. Perhaps a bit too much. The tight-fitting floral patterned shirt was not doing anything for his fragile, nine-year-old masculinity. Neither were the short shorts. At least his hair wasn't so neat anymore - he'd managed to successfully mess it up as soon as he wasn't being watched like a hawk.
Sometimes, being adopted wasn't so great. He got fed and nice clothes, at least, but... his other dad wasn't exactly... supportive.
"Honestly, I have no idea why F'lan picked up a boy," X'ni had said. "At least he could have gotten a boy that looks like a boy. Oh well. I suppose I always wanted a daughter anyways. You'll do, Emma. You just have to shut up and listen to me and do what I say." (Right off the bat, Emrin had given up on correcting X'ni whenever he got called Emma or Emmy. He was a wuss.) "First, I'm fixing your clothes. The ones you have don't even fit, dipshit. I don't know how F'lan let you get them. It's awful. He's such a bad mother, so loose when it comes to rules. I'm not like that. Just fair warning. Here, put this on."
It had went from there. That's how Emrin had ended up here in the dining hall, dressed in an oddly feminine way, looking quite disgruntled. If only he wasn't so wimpy, he could give X'ni a piece of his mind! But alas, he was a wimp and he knew it. It kind of sucked. Maybe F'lan could teach him how to be cool and manly...? But F'lan wasn't really that manly himself. And why did X'ni keep calling F'lan a mother? He wasn't a girl... Neither of his "parents" were girls. They were both boys, which was equally baffling.
Really, it was all just really weird. F'lan, X'ni, the Weyr -- everything.
But he wasn't eating out of garbage cans anymore. That was a plus. [/blockquote]

Xela was hungry, and slightly lonely. Both of those were remedied by a trip to the dining hall, and having some shred of sense, that's what she did. She got herself a bowl of whatever type of stew they happened to be serving today and immediately started looking for companionship, or, failing that, a group of people who were having an interesting conversation upon which she could eavesdrop. Instead, though, she saw quite the strange site: someone littler like her sitting by herself, wearing clothes that would look more fitting at a summertime gather than at a wintertime everyday meal. Her choice in seat was obvious.
She plopped down unceremoniously next to Emrin. "Why are you wearing that stuff? Aren't you freezing?" she said in way of a greeting, shoving the first spoonful of stew into her mouth. Then, she got a closer look at the person wearing the strange clothes, and she nearly upset the bowl. "Shells, are you a boy?!" she exclaimed in disbelief, grabbing Emrin's face and peering, uncomfortably close, at him. "Faranth, you are!" She gave another incredulous look at the floral print shirt and very short shorts. Currently being raised with two of them, the young Candidate was well acquainted with gay men, but even still... this was ridiculous!
She continued to stare unabashedly at Emrin and his bizarre ensemble. She shoved her food away. This was far more interesting. "Do, tell me," she demanded, moving to straddle the bench and face him properly. "What made you think walking around like this was a good idea? Who are you, anyways?" she said, once again peering closely at him to see if she could recognize him. He wasn't a Candidate, she knew that. She then realized that introducing herself might be a good idea. "I'm Xela, by the way."

Basically, he just turned bright red. That was the first reaction. It probably spoke for itself. He was about to explain why he dressed so weird, when she realized he was a boy, and his face went even redder. He stuttered out something incoherent, complete with a startled rabbit expression as she looked him over. Shells. This really wasn't his day.
Withering, he waited out the next things she said as a useless, curled-up lump on a bench. His blue eyes watched her carefully. She wasn't going to beat him up for it, right? She was a little scary. Sometimes the kids back home wanted to beat him up. Usually he was good at getting out of it by proving he wasn't really a threat and that he was just trying to be cool like them because they were awesome, but this wasn't home. This was a Weyr. Were the kids meaner here? Oh, shells, he hoped not. Hesitantly, he swallowed and spoke up.
"I... Someone made me dress like this," he squeaked. "W-well, my... dad did. No, wait, he's not really my dad. He's just... with this dragonrider guy who took me to the weyr. I was at the gather, see, and then he was all like, 'I'm taking you with me!' It was really weird. And the people here are weird, too. X'ni... that's the guy who gave me these clothes. I was gonna change out, but if I went back to where my real clothes are I think he'd see me and get mad! He's really really weird. I think..." He took a slow breath. "I think he's trying to make me into a girl. For some reason. I don't know." His big, round eyes looked up at Xela. "He's so weird it's scary, X... Xela, right? It's Xela? Oh, I'm... I'm... E-Emrin... um."
There, he dropped off. Oh dear... that had been a lot of talking... His mouth felt all weird and dry and his cheeks were really, really hot. Huffing and annoyed at himself, he plopped his chin down on the table. [/blockquote]

Xela found herself feeling bad for the boy in front of her. She was quite capable of lashing out to those who thought they were above her, to assert herself, but she was not mean. She was no pushover; but she was also no bully. Any fool could see that this helpless sap was no real threat to anybody. Any boy who let himself be dressed in girls' clothes against his will probably wasn't. And since she had nothing to fear from him, he had nothing to fear from her.
She waited, mostly patiently, for him to get to the point of his story. Faranth, it was like catching a stubborn runner in a round pen. The dang thing insisted on going around and around and around when it would have been much simpler to just get to the inevitable ending. Unfortunately, rushing either Emrin or the runner would do nothing to hurry up the ending-- it'd just prolong the process. So she waited.
X'ni was his dad? X'ni, the ex-renegade 'rider? Her interest was piqued at that. She'd have to ask T'el or M'kiru about that later... as far as both of them seemed from the fatherly type, X'ni might just be worse! Then again, stranger things had happened, and it was just like X'ni to dress up the poor kid like this.
Now it was time for Xela to set this kid straight. She hated to see someone get kicked around like this. X'ni had no right to force his fetishes on others! She decided right then and there that she would teach Emrin to stand up for himself. She'd make him man up! He made a cute girl, but she was sure that he would be a cuter boy. That is, once he got some masculinity. He was quite lacking in that department at the moment.
"Now, look here!" she said, grabbing his shoulders and giving him a little shake. She was blunt and aggressive, but that was just how she got things done. She was obviously on his side, she was just a little... overzealous about it. "X'ni is not the boss of you. You are the boss of you! If you don't want to be a girl, then you gotta start behaving like a man! Do I make myself clear?" She once again got uncomfortably close to him, staring him down.
She stared at him for a few seconds more before abruptly swinging her legs off of the bench and getting to her feet. "Come on!" she said, grabbing his hand and tugging on it insistently. "I've got a shirt and some pants you can borrow. They might be a little small, but anything's better than," she said, gesturing to his amusing get-up, "this! Then, you know what you're going to do? You're going to take these crazy clothes and burn them. With fire!" She tugged on her hand again. "Now, are you coming or not?"

Cue startled rabbit expression again. Emrin was a wimp - there was no doubt about it. This girl was scary, too! She was loud and she was shaking him and she was telling him he was the boss of him. It was a nice thought, he had to admit, but it seemed a little to important for him. He wasn't the boss of anything! He didn't like being that boss. He always messed up. People didn't like bosses, either. If he just followed people around, it was all good. Well... Mostly. Xela apparently didn't think so.
"W-what... Yes? Y-yes?" he spluttered. Well, she was definitely making herself clear with all this loud talking! He looked like he wanted to curl up and die right now. Which he did. He was so embarrassed... He was hoping no one would notice him in these stupid clothes, but someone did! Agh! And now she was suggesting they do bad things! Light them on fire? But that was wasting them, right?
"B-but! Won't we get in t-trouble?" Unable to protest physically, he was dragged along by the headstrong girl. "What if the fire spreads to something important? Like curtains! I don't think this is a good idea, Xelaaa!"
Well. Getting out of these stupid clothes was a good idea, but not the burning them part... Oh, shells! This wasn't going to be good! [/blockquote]
