(( This is before Ausk`s Run. ))
Ridan yawned as he stretched out on his bed and basked in the light candle glow that was lit in his room. Risk was laying next to him, as it was her custom, with her eyes closed and resting. Ridan looked over at her hide and smiled. She was glowing, now! Her Run would be very soon. But he was not the only one that was glowing. Ausk was glowing, too. But the question was who was going to Run first? Risk was not thrilled at the idea of sharing her Sands with that hot-blooded Red that needed to be controlled. The Red, to her, was very immature for always shouting like a Wheret or Wherling. Ridan rather hoped Ausk would Run soon. It was easier for Risk to force her way onto the Sands, but not easily for a Red to do that.
Ridan stood up after stretching out his muscles. He was already dressed for the evening. He was going out. And so was Risk! They were not going on watch duty. In fact, Risk and Ausk were off watch duty for a bit at the moment with their Runs close by. But they were going out to meet the Wher Candidates of Dalibor Weyr. This was going to be a very interesting lesson for the Candidates getting to meet Risk and Ausk. He just hoped Risk was not going to maul a Candidate. She was already very testy with the Run being soon, and even more testy with that Red being close to her, too.
Ridan had already had S`rial let the Wher Candidates that they were going to be needed tonight. Ridan opened the door. The crisp, cool night air danced on his skin as he let out a sigh. It was not cold enough to see your breath coming from your nose and mouth, but it was getting there. And the sun was just below the horizon. All that was left of the day that had existed was the pink and orange lines that streaked across the tops of the mountains before turning blue and then dark, midnight blue of the night time. Stars were beginning to dot the sky, and the two moons were out. Not in full, but they were out enough to see. Yes, tonight was going to be a good night for this lesson. Who could ask for better weather than this?
"Come on, Risk, we better go," Ridan said, turning his head to look back at the Gold Wher who was still laying in her spot.
The Gold lifted her head and snorted. Why did they have to go deal with humans that wish to be Wherhandlers? Why did Ridan always have to insist she meet them before the Run and Hatching. Well, she knew and understood. It was so she would recognize them and not attack them on the Sands when they came to Impress her children. They wanted her children! They had better prove themselves worthy of her children. If she did not approve of them, they would just go to that immature Red, Ausk. Her children were perfect! They were perfect because she was their Queen!
She looked at Ridan, her eyes whirling green with tinges of orange around the rims of her eyes. She was already experiencing the testy and moodiness that comes before a Run. And where were the males of her Weyr? They should be coming to see her! To show her that she was the best if they wanted to stay in her graces for the Run! Stupid males. Mask had not even been around. She could still smell him on the occasion, but he was never to be found. The Bronze seemed to not be interested in her anymore. Fie on them all! They be good! Better be good! Else I not put up with them! she spoke, standing up and stretching out like a large and magnificent feline even though she was a Wher. But Whers had their own beauty, too!
Ridan chuckled at the Wher`s words. He knew she meant it, but he also knew that she would not hurt. She already still worried he harbored some secret anger for hurting him the day that he Impressed to her, but he always made sure to give her enough love and attention to let her know that he was never angry at her. He always loved her. He had nothing but love and pride for his Gold. And the Gold had as much love and pride for him as well. They were connected as much as they could be.
The Gold walked next to him as they walked over to the Candidate Barracks. Here they would meet the Wher Candidates. He told the Candidates to be ready after the sun went down. And as the last streaks of pink began to go down below the mountains, Ridan began to mentally tell Risk that she needed to be on her best behavior. That she needed to try to be patient with the Candidates and that this would be good for both of them. Risk would have rolled her eyes. She would behave unless one gave her a reason to maul them. Then she would if she could. So it was not her that needed to be on their best behavior, it was the Candidates that needed to behave! Or else she would just chase them out off the Sands when she had her Clutch.
"Okay, Risk," Ridan said as they arrived at the Barracks. "Call Ausk now. And try to be good with her, too. I know it is tense between you and her at this moment, but it is best. And if you want other Whers and their Handlers to come, they can too. Now the question is whether f not S`rial is here, too," Ridan muttered, waiting for the Candidates, Audren, Ausk, and S`rial to show up when they could. Even if none of them showed up, he could do this. He had done this before.
As for Risk, the Gold turned her head toward the Wher. Ausk, you needed at Candidate Barracks now! Other Whers may join if wish! she shouted to all the Whers of Dalibor.

Nighttime at Dalibor.
How long had it been? Almost eight turns now? And yet, though Hustafer wasn't sure, he thought he and Husk had even wound up in the very same room they'd had for those few months.
Good months they'd been, too. Not that the man regretted their years at Western Hold, but sometimes he did wonder what things might have been like if they'd never left, if they'd let someone else go to be the Hold's nocturnal guardian. And that evening, having a quiet breakfast in the dining hall with the big iron wher's head on his thigh, was one of those times. Even having only been back a day, there was something... comforting... about being in a Weyr. A place that was made for dragons and whers to live.
Okay, so the dining hall was not supposed to be among the places where whers lived, but Husk had been so anxious about the change of venue, had so strongly promised to be good, that Hustafer simply couldn't bring himself to forbid him. And Husk had, in fact, been good, lying quietly next to the table with his head on his handler's lap.
Then Husk suddenly lifted his head.
Shard it. He hoped that wasn't going to lead to another incident with an overturned table... What is it, buddy?
Risk calls, the wher told him, getting up to his feet; automatically, Hustafer stood as well, scooping up one meatroll and another half-eaten in one hand, picking up the plate with the other. Husk went on, Gold Risk. She calls whers to Candidate dens, says we may come.
A gold, now? Hustafer was intrigued. Even though it didn't sound like the summons had been a command, he was eagerto meet this gold, and Husk certainly was as well.
The man dropped off his plate and set off at a light jog, munching down the half-eaten meatroll as he did in the interests of saving time. Husk lumbered along beside and slightly ahead of him, head ducked down against even the dim light of the glows in the passageway. Though Hustafer didn't know exactly where in the barracks they needed to be, Husk did, and his handler let him lead the way.
They made good time, jogging and loping into the barracks. Husk's attention, of course, was immediately riveted by seeing Risk in the flesh - and well he might be; that hide was radiant. Hustafer himself, though, had more interest in her handler. A younger man, though certainly not young...
Come to think of it... just before he and Husk had left High Reaches, hadn't there been a big to-do about a gold wherlet? Something about Impressing on a man who'd just been brought in from another Weyr... the age was about right, and allowing for the years in between, it looked like it could have been that pair...
Well. Hustafer felt a grin spread over his face. This might turn out to be an interesting reunion. Come on, buddy, he thought, giving the iron's shoulder a pat. Let's go say hello.
Husk grunted, and plodded along at his handler's side as Hustafer advanced. Any excuse to get a closer look at this gold was quite fine by him.

Khemres had heard that he was supposed to meet Ridan and Risk outside the candidate barracks tonight. That being said, he'd taken special care to be clean and well-groomed (he didn't want to disrespect Risk, whom he admired to an almost unhealthy degree). Although he was always clean, he'd scrubbed himself off extra extra well, and his clothes were clean, and in general he presented a nice picture, if you didn't look too hard at his face, where there were still fading marks where D'ix had grabbed him.
There were still bruises scattered all over his body, but they didn't hurt as much as they had before. Khemres, for the sake of his sanity and dignity (not that he had much), ignored them. Zetri didn't. The little black flit screeched terribly whenever he saw His without clothes on, and the case was the same tonight. The wher candidate sighed, catching his pet and stroking him gently to calm him down. "Shh. Shh. They don't hurt anymore!" he reassured the firelizard. Zetri squealed indignantly, but soon relaxed and sagged into his owner's hands, nuzzling him affectionately. Relieved, the candidate set him on his shoulder and smiled, scratching the tiny eye-ridges affectionately. "There you go. Good Zetri."
Praising his beloved black softly, Khemres headed out of his room. His pet, knowing how important it was to behave, sat on his shoulder, but made no noise. However, his little tail curled possessively around His' neck: he didn't want him to get hurt again. Knowing how he felt, the albino appreciated the constant touch but didn't acknowledge it, and out they went to the spot where Ridan and Risk were waiting. Remembering the few minutes they'd spent at the lake together not long ago, the candidate blushed, but didn't do or say anything stupid.
Instead, he offered a respectful bow to Risk, not wishing to be mauled in her pre-Run testiness. That done with, the albino stepped back and wrangled a small smile onto his face, tipping up the brim of his hat to peek a little nervously at the ironhandler, whom he didn't know, and Ridan, whom he did. "E-evening," he greeted softly. He wasn't sure why he was here, precisely, but he had his suspicions. Still, he didn't need to say anything or run this thing, and that was a relief.
Sagaral was less than glad to have to get up and go meet with all of the other candidates plus the Weyr's goldhandler and his wher. Still, he supposed that the impending clutches made it worthwhile. He really did want a wher of his own. What colour, though? Truth be told, he really didn't care. He just wanted one. Maybe one like Sagrisk... not Isk. No, not Isk. That would hurt too much.
The wher candidate hastily shoved those memories away, back into the darkest corners of his mind, and headed down the hall for a quick bath. The second he was clean, he tossed on some serviceable clothes, ran a brush through his long hair and headed out, meeting Ridan, Risk, and the ironpair outside. He totally ignored the other candidate, and offered a stiff bow to the gold, but said nothing to Ridan. If the handler wanted a greeting, he wasn't getting one. Not so early in the evening. Besides, he wasn't being overtly rude... just impolite. Nothing that warranted getting eaten by an angry gold, at least. |

Kire was nervous. She stood there twisting her hands around one another in her room, pacing backwards and forwards. She needed to walk she was just too nervous. She had been informed, well, all had been informed to meet the Gold Wher that very night. There was still some light in the sky as she walked out the door. She couldn't wait any longer in the room. She was far to anxious. She wanted to be a handler so bad. She was dressed in what she considered her best clothes with her hair tied neatly off her face. Always tied back off her face never left loose. She walked though the corridors and outdoors. It was just becoming dark, the light tinting everything. She saw that she was not the first person there. There were two males waiting already and an Iron Wher approaching.
Kire could not help but stare at the Iron and the Gold with something close to adoration. She dipped her head in something of a bow to the four. Gold Risk and her handler, Ridan, then Iron Husk and his handler Hustafar. She didn't really know how she was supposed to be acting. Well, she did know but it was always something that slipped her mind. As it happened, she took a deep breath to calm her nerves. She knew that she had to be calm and confident and she forced herself to stand straight.
"Greetings..." She said after a moment, almost a squeak.
She cleared her throat and turned bright red at the fact that she had made such a poor impression. Of course, she had been in the position once before and didn't wish to wind up in it again. She so badly wanted to impress she didn't think anything would distract her. She would just focus directly on the matter at hand. She was standing before a gold and needed to show it the respect due.
"Greetings Gold Risk... Wherhandler Ridan... Iron Husk and Wherhandler Hustafar..." She managed to say in as confident manner as possible.
She managed it for the most part, voice quivering every now and then... |

Durene and Dusk showed up shortly after Hustafer and Husk had shown up. Dusk had not wanted to come. She wanted to be nowhere near the angry Gold at the moment with her and the Red`s Runs being really soon. But Durene thought it would be nice to stop by and see some of the Candidates just to get an idea of who all was going to be following behind their footsteps. Dusk snorted as she came into view, taking the furthest route from the Gold. Risk, at the same time, eyed the Green carefully. She was still rather testy at the moment, but trying to count as much as she could.
Rdan looked over at the Iron Handler. So this was Hustafer, the other Iron Handler of Dalibor Weyr. He had not had a chance to meet the Handler because of his absence from the Weyr for the last several Turns, but it seemed like he was going to get his chance soon enough. He noticed that Risk seemed to lighten a little bit at the sight of the Iron. It meant that she was more than likely going to remind the Iron she was Queen, that she deserved respect, and that she was Running soon and he had better Chase. Ridan look over the Candidates who had arrived. There was one here he had not met yet, another that he had. He smirked at Khemres, remembering their little fated meeting at the Weyr Lake not that long ago.
"Well, it seem Audren and Ausk are running a little behind, but I will go ahead and introduce myself. I am Ridan, Handler of Gold Risk. The others here are Hustafer and Iron Husk, along with Durene and Green Dusk. Dusk actually Hatched from the last Hatching. There are a few things I would like to go over before the Whers have their future Runs and Hatchings. First of all, most Whers who are about to Run are testy. Second, a Gold must always be respected no matter what. Three, try not to show up late. Four, make sure you bring a sharp knife and plenty of meat for your new Whers. No fat, pure meat as they will be needing the good stuff for the first few months of their lives.
"Now, as I am sure you know, a Wher is a night time creature. Rarely do they ever venture out into daylight. They have photosensitive eyesight and normally cannot fly. but they do serve a purpose here on Pern, and that is to watch for Thread at night and to sometimes battle the Thread at night. Now, the main reason I called you here is to meet Risk and Ausk so that they may be familiarized with you all before the Hatching. That way the Whers are less likely to chase you off the Sands. Now, Durene, if you are willing, will you let the other actually see dusk up close and touch her so they can get a feel of what their Wher will be like for them?" the Gold Handler asked.
Durene smiled and nodded. "Sure, it should not be a problem." Dusk turned to look at Durene, her eyes suddenly picking up shades of orange. Durene, no want. They clumsy, she said. Durene patted the Green. It is okay. They will Impress soon and learn the responsibility. Just deal with it. Think of this as you are being the example of what a Wher really is! Dusk liked that thought. And with that thought in her mind, she moved toward the Candidates to let them touch her, pet, almost anything ecept maybe ride her like a Runner.

Husk stopped a few lengths short of the vibrant gold, whuffing in her direction and dipping his head down a moment, but otherwise standing proud. She was gold, he was iron, he would defer to her that much - especially now; but he was iron, and he would stand strong.
He eyed the humans all around him with some wariness. They better not get between him and Risk! But if they didn't do that, and they weren't too noisy, he was fine with them. They could get a look at a good strong iron if they wished. With a soft grunt, he sat back on his haunches.
Hustafer, meanwhile, raised an eyebrow, still grinning. "Well now," he drawled, "I didn't know Husk an' I would be so well-known by sight, but yeah, you both got the right of it, that's us." He set a hand atop the iron's ungainly head. "Don't let Husk's big ol' glare there fool ya, he's just got all his attention on a gold close to Runnin'. He's a friendly old brute, long as you're not too noisy 'round 'im. Loves kids, human or wher, wouldn't hurt anyone who doesn't give him a good reason. So if you want another wher to look at up close, ol' Husk is pretty safe."
Striking up an acquaintance with the goldhandler could wait until later. For now, he sat down beside his wher with an arm draped over the iron's shoulders, tossing the candidates an inviting grin.

“Brother, you're making me late!” Damali whined in a muffled voice, trying in vain to twist away from her elder brother as he surely and steadily re-wrapped her broken arm, “We're meeting the Wher Queen today, and you're making me late.” Lokien just snorted and shifted his weight a little so he could lift more of Damali's arm off the floor, inspecting his work. He knelt in the middle of his little sister's back, pinning her to the floor so she couldn't run off while he was making sure she didn't have any infection, and the bone was healing straight.
“A few minutes late versus having to re-break your arm to fix a bad heal, or to fight off an infection? Damali, be reasonable.” The new bandages were tight, the arm was straight, and the afflicted area was immobilized to his satisfaction.
“An infection or a bad heal are the least of my worries! You know what Golds do to people who are late? They eat them! Then you'll be trying to patch me together out of a pile of...”
“That's enough. Get out of my sight.” Standing, Lokien was almost knocked off balance when Damali jumped to her feet and dashed towards the door to the infirmary. She paused halfway there, ran back, pressed a kiss to his cheek, and then fled towards the Candidate Barracks.
She ran towards the barracks at an angle so she'd have the building between her and the whers; you didn't just go running up to unfamiliar whers, after all. Well, you could, but then you'd, maybe, live to regret it. She took a moment to catch her breath and compose herself, pulling her tunic so it hung nicely, dusting off her breeches, before she set off at a quick, cautious clip towards the voices she could hear nearby.
She arrived in time to hear most of Ridan's speech, staying as unobtrusive as possible; the worst thing she could do was compound being late by disrespecting the Gold and her Handler by interrupting him! She listened attentively, slightly back and to one side, and cast a wistful glance at the Green before sidling forward to catch Ridan's attention, without distracting the other Candidates or Handlers.
She bowed, deeply, and kept her head low and her eyes down as she spoke, “Greetings, Queen Risk and Goldhandler Ridan. I apologize profusely for my tardiness; no disrespect is intended! I was forcibly delayed, and I will make sure it does not happen again.” The formality was almost uncomfortable for her, but she forced the feeling down; if there was one thing that could get Damali to behave, it was whers!

Ausk paced as Hers talked... and talked, and talked, and sat, and was boring and inferior. Every little once in a while, she stopped to sit, hunching over like a gargoyle. When she wasn't sitting, she walked on her crocodilian legs, lumbering back and forth. She wanted to go. She wanted to do something. She wanted to kill, or eat, or patrol, rather than listen to Hers talk about the shape of things. Luckily, the Weyrwoman Fajra had stayed up late to hold the little catch-up meeting at a time where Ausk and Audren were awake and functional, otherwise the red would be downright vicious. Instead, she was only mildly upset. She froze and narrowed her eyes as Risk's voice invaded her small brain. She snarled.
NO TELL. AUSK KNOW, [/i] she snapped. The reply was curt and to-the-point, brutally honest, but not disrespectful. Luckily, the red knew to tone it down when she spoke to the gold. It wasn't as though she actually felt she should respect Risk - she didn't fell she should respect anyone but herself - but she knew that she had to act a certain way around royalty, if only because of previous unfortunate incidents when she was younger. The red relayed Risk's message, rather unhappily, to her handler. Audren finished up her report to Fajra as fast as she could. There were things to discuss, still, and she didn't rush herself. It was her job to keep the weyrwoman up to date on the information from patrols and she took it seriously. Finally, however, she finished and was able to hurry to the meeting. Ausk stalked behind her, nostrils flared and breathing heavily. She didn't want to go to the meeting. She didn't want to meet candidates. She didn't want them to Impress to her eggs because she didn't like them and she never would. She wouldn't even give them a chance. They were probably all good-for-nothing, wherry-brained egg-stealers, as far as she was concerned, and she wanted nothing to do with them, but Audren insisted. It was the woman's iron will that had the red reluctantly stomping behind her. She came in near the beginning of Ridan's speech; she and Ausk quietly came up to stand beside him and Risk without interrupting. Ausk hunched up at her heels, gnarled and horned shoulders sticking up, head lowered. She glared at all of the candidates with the fury of the Red Star. She hated them all. She wanted them to know that. The glow about her red hide did not make her pretty or a nice person. It let them know that she was a red and that she would tear their limbs from their body. The red wher growled low and deep in her throat. Audren let her be - silencing the wher right now wasn't the way to get her to relax. She would just argue right back. When Ridan finished and offered up Durene and Dusk for touch-and-feel purposes, Audren quickly jumped in before the candidates got too caught up in the green wher. "Sorry for being late, everyone - I had a meeting with Fajra. I'm Audren, Handler of Red Ausk here. Anyways, I have some things to add before you all get too excited," Audren said. Her voice was loud enough to get overtop any murmuring that might have come about when candidates started moving to see Dusk. It was obvious that Audren had a commanding air about her. It was something that she had to have to keep Ausk in check, and there was no doubt that she was good at it. "It's not just Golds that need to be respected. Every single wher should be respected. Actually, if I were to advise the ones to respect the most, a Red and a Bronze would be at the top of the list. Golds are important. They are the Queens. But Reds are volatile, and you don't want to piss one off - especially Ausk, and Bronzes are males. Territorial." The red gave a snarling noise for emphasis, flexing her claws. "Just respect every wher. You will have one for a lifemate if all goes well. They're incredible creatures and deserve that respect. I think Ridan covered most of the other stuff you need to know.
"I just have one more thing to warn you about. Ausk will NOT WANT YOU ON HER SANDS. She won't. Do not even think about getting cozy with her. The respect thing is key: don't offend Ausk, and I can keep her controlled." Even now, the red was fighting mentally with her handler. Ausk thought that she should be the ones telling the candidates all this! She could scare them - shake them all up! They wouldn't mess with her after that. Audren, however, knew better than to let Ausk do that. She forced her mind on Ausk's, suppressing her angry urges. "The Sands aren't an easy place to be, but if you respect Ausk and Risk, and respect the hatchlings, you'll do just fine." And here, she offered them an encouraging smile. She felt a little bad. She was making whers out to be terrible, violent things, when in truth most of them weren't. Ausk was just a bitch. Even Ausk herself agreed with that (and was proud of it). Hopefully, no one would end up with an Ausk. One Ausk was more than enough for Dalibor. Hester, sitting quietly near the back, definitely agreed with that.[/size][/blockquote] |

Delgar stood in the group of candidates, trying not to bounce impatiently on the balls of his feet while he listened to Ridan's speech. And he did listen, even though he knew most of it and had whers right in front of him to distract him. But this was still important, and so he listened. As soon as the Alphahandler told them they could try touching Dusk, Delgar was one of the first to step forward, only to pause as the Red's handler spoke. He nodded seriously in understanding. He had never met a red before, but he knew their reputations. He'd be careful on Ausk's sands when the Hatching came.
Delgar stepped forward again towards Dusk when it seemed the Handlers were done talking, and bowed to each of the whers in turn before moving within biting or clawing distance of any of them. He would only be approaching Dusk unless on of the other pairs volunteered, but as Ridan and Audren had emphasized, a little respect never went wrong. "May I touch you, Dusk?" he asked the green politely as he moved in close enough. Even a green needed respect. Delgar had seen what his father's wher could do to a helpless wherry, and he had no intention of seeing things from that perspective. He would definitely rather be a handler than prey.

Shailen was terrified. Petrified. Stupefied. He was supposed to meet the Whers and their Handlers tonight. All of the Candidates had been told earlier today in careful detail what they were to do, and since then he had been in shambles. Sitting on his bed with eyes open wide, he clutched his hat to his chest. The only image that played in his mind was that of mouthful of big teeth- fangs!- sinking into him. His roommate’s words had damaged him more than the boy could have possibly known. Lyr had told him that it wasn’t that bad, that he didn’t need to be afraid, but all of her sensibilities seemed so far away now.
Shailen didn’t know what he was waiting for, sitting there staring at the wall across from him blankly. Perhaps it was his courage; It was all up to him to go out and face Dalibor’s other creatures. When he heard footsteps in the hall he knew it was time, but still could not bring himself to move. He felt so alone, with not a friend, family member, pet, bonded, or anything. He even wished that his roommate, who was the cause of this mortal terror, was there to urge him on. Anyone. But there’s not. Taking a deep breath, he gathered himself the best he could, rising to his feet as though the weight of a dragon rested on his shoulders, trying to keep him down.
The walk from his room to the Weyrbowl was slow and painful, seemingly to last eons. When he finally caught sight of Risk he knees buckled and he almost fainted. She was terrifying. He wanted to turn and run- to slip away into the shadows and disappear forever- but he had already been spotted and was being motioned over by one of the Handlers. ”Hello….” he managed to choke out when he reached them. Remembering being told that he should bow to Queens at Hatchings, Shailen bowed impulsively to Risk, then, not really knowing what he had done or how the huge Gold would react, melted into the back of the small crowd gathered, his heart pounding painfully in his chest. Seeing Kire, he drew up next to her, desperate for the comfort of being in the company of someone he knew.

Kire listened intently to what was being said with great intent. She had to pay attention to exactly what was being said or else she might very well miss something and then miss something else... Like a hand. She knew how Whers acted and knew that they needed to be treated with the utmost respect. She couldn't wait to talk to them and get to know them a little more. She remembered Dusk a little from a meeting in the Weyrbowl so that was good. She wasn't so worried about it now.
Kire then noticed that Shailen had arrived. She nearly waved to the other candidate but thought better of it instead just smiling at him in an encouraging manner. She wasn't sure how Risk would react if they seemed to be distracted while Hers was talking to them all. Shailen had by now bowed to the Queen and joined her in the crowd.
"Hi, we should go and talk to a few of them don't you think?" She whispered to him happily once Ridan and Audren had finished speaking and invited them forwards.
She stepped forward a little, with a few of the other candidates pleased that they did indeed have the chance to know some of these creatures before they impressed one of their own.
She tried to remember all the Handlers whenever she could... It was more due to the fact that she enjoyed watching them when she was performing her chores and had picked up on a little gossip around the Weyr to fill in the other details. She reached out for Shailen's hand intent on dragging him forwards to talk to all the Whers and their handlers. She couldn't have asked for a better opportunity to get to know some of her heroes. |
