His body had jumped at the chance to sleep again after his exertions. Some combination of the physical and mental exhaustion had him sleeping far past Rukbat's peak, deep into the afternoon. When R'len finally stirred, the outside light was just beginning to take on the richer shade of evening. His eyelids cracked open and he saw silhouetted wisps of brown hair.
He hadn't noticed the weight on top of him until just now. He shifted his fingers slightly and felt soft, bare skin beneath them and furs above. If there was one thing he most certainly remembered, it was the explosion of triumph that had come from Kaezeth when he caught Callistath. This creature asleep on him had to be Avalle, then. Dalibor's young Jr. Weyrwoman. R'len closed his eyes again. R'len, Dalibor's old fart of a Jr. Weyrleader.
Mostly, the idea was daunting. He swallowed hard against the rising lump of anxiety in his throat. Another job to pile onto his position as Wingleader. He could do it, of course, but at a price. It didn't help that he currently felt intensely sore all over, naked against an equally naked woman half his age. Normally, he wouldn't think too much of it, but it was all culminating into one big mass of worried feelings in his head. He took a slow, deep breath. Shard it, R'len, he told himself. Worry when you actually have to. Because he didn't really have any good reasons. Generally, after a flight, you woke up with someone, and it was just a part of weyr life. Generally, after winning a gold's flight, you woke up with a new job.
He allowed himself to calm down and only vaguely chew on his situation, rather than letting it consume him. Immediately, all he wanted to do was tell Nimara about it. He wanted her to know, and he would be able to spill all his concerns to her without feeling self-conscious. That would be good... As he thought about the redrider and what she might say, he was idly stroking Avalle's back. When he realized this, he forced his hand still again. Instead, he thought of Kaezeth.
The iron was sleeping deeply in the sunlit part of the weyr, still twined with his lady Callistath. Even though the dragon's mind was dormant, it was the happiest R'len had seen Kaezeth since Waroth kicked him out... Faranth, was that over two Turns ago? R'len suddenly felt old. It didn't feel like it had been that long. Nothing had felt that long. He guessed he was just too busy to pay strict attention to time. He let Kaezeth sleep and adopted that disregard for time again.
Things had changed. Things would keep changing. For now, though, R'len let himself relax until one of the other three woke up. [/blockquote]

Her eyes didn't want to open and she didn't want to get up. She was exhausted, but she felt somewhat satisfied. And she knew that when she opened her eyes, she wouldn't see O'ris. What had happened? She'd made a choice, that's what. Duh, stupid. She'd made up her mind, finally. It didn't even matter who was with her now, because it wasn't him. What had even made her do this? Honestly... she would probably say boredom. She was bored. So bored. And being bored made her angry. Callistath's flight hadn't helped that anger, it'd only made her crave more change, so that's what she did. She finally changed things.
Avalle wasn't sleeping anymore, but her eyes were still closed. The hand on her back felt nice. She felt better than she had in ages, really. Even though she only had a vague idea about the man under her. R'len was his name, and he was involved with a Redrider. That's really all she knew. No that it mattered. She kept her eyes closed still, not wanting to wake up and have to deal with the potential awkwardness. The last time she'd had a flight it hadn't mattered, because she had someone else. She knew who she was going to wake up with. It was weird now, so she decided to just put off actually waking up for the time being. She really just wasn't sure what to do.
Searching Callistath's mind, Avalle wondered how the gold was. She seemed content with Kaezeth, although Avalle could feel the slight disappointment that it wasn't Valleth. Oh well, couldn't win them all. Kaezeth was a strong Iron, he'd lasted her stupidly long flight and was just the gentleman she required. That was good. Callistath was still sleeping, which the brunette figured was good. She needed her rest.
R'len was awake and had been for a little while now. So time to stop being such a procrastinator and wake up, then. Avalle opened her eyes slowly, staring at R'len for a moment before sitting up. Blushing intensely, she grabbed the furs and wrapped them around herself, avoiding eye-contact due to a sudden bout of extreme embarrassment. Jeez, this was a lot harder than she figured it was going to be! He was also nearly twice her age. Not that it mattered, she guessed. It was better than the other option. Still avoiding eye contact, she moved herself off to the side of her bed, still keeping the furs around herself.
She stayed quiet for a moment, her plan suddenly gone. What was she supposed to do? This was frustrating. "It's getting dark out," she commented flatly, unable to really look at him. Ahh shards, this was so annoying! Why was she so bad at this?! It's not like it even meant anything. It was just for her dumb gold. Other people were stupid and annoying and all she wanted to do was go take a bath. [/size]

R'len was falling back asleep again. He was floating between the land of the temporarily unresponsive and the land of the living when Avalle finally stirred. It only took him a split second to dredge his full consciousness back up from wherever it had been hiding, and saw Avalle's brown eyes before she blushed, sat up straight and moved away. He remembered Nimara acting similarly embarrassed; he wondered if the redrider would still be as awkward about it now that they knew each other well... He swallowed and thought about something other than that.
Hopefully Avalle felt approximately the same about this whole situation as he did. Firstly, that it was unfortunately awkward, and secondly that it was best to shrug it off and continue on. He had always found this form of inauguration odd. You gain a position of power and promptly fuck something. If he could go about it in a less primal way, he most definitely would, but that was just how it worked. It had been like that for as long as anyone could remember. At least it was the only time dragons' instinctive urges were that strong.
"It's getting dark out," Avalle commented, and R'len laughed a little. He then half groaned, half sighed, and dragged his hands down his poor face. Silence broken, he looked over at the goldrider, hiding in her furs. He still had some on his side of the bed, covering what needed be covered, which was for the best. He sat up, too.
"Yeah," he said. "Yeah, it is. I guess we slept in." He offered a lopsided smile and scratched at his beard. "Faranth... You know, I had been planning to have a surprise wing drill today." He laughed again; he was looking away now. "My wing probably figured out it's a day off." R'len wasn't really sure how she would react to his random tidbits of information. Either it would make things worse, or ease the tension. Either way, he tended to talk when he felt out of place. Often it helped.
Kaezeth's mind came to meet his rider's, waking slightly. He opened one lazy eye, saw the sunlight, and closed it again. He didn't need to wake up any time soon. There was no sense of urgency today. He was content to lay with Callistath until she wished him to move or to move herself. He did, however, allow himself a sly comment to his rider. Good evening, Jr. Weyrleader.
R'len smirked. Oh, shut up. [/blockquote]
