Tedaon watched the Dragons as they banked around and down into the Weyrbowl one by one. He still didn't know why he insisted on torturing himself by wandering out into the Bowl every now and then. This time, at least, he didn't have the option of returning to the infirmary, still injured from wrestling the Wild Whers the other day. His leg was healing up nicely but was still bandaged along with his good wrist. It was somewhat sad that his good wrist was injured as it was. Still, he had confidence that he would be fine to go back to work soon. They needed him, after all.
Neras fluttered over to where he was sitting and chirruped a message. Tedaon stared at the Flitt blankly and shrugged his shoulders. It would have been so much easier to understand the Flitt in the past. Things seemed to have gotten a little tougher of late. Three turns ago, everything seemed so much easier. He was seated on the fringes of the Bowl and watched a Pink wander past him.
There seemed to be a few Greens about. Tedaon closed his eyes for a moment as Neras landed lightly on his shoulder. He felt a shadow pass over him and looked at the sky, expecting to see the telltale shape of a Dragon flying overhead. Instead, he saw a cloud. He felt as though he was losing his touch for all things Dragon Rider... |

J'en was in a good mood. It was a clear winter morning, the earliest hints of spring just beginning to leach the chill from the air, and he was enjoying a rare and unprecedented state of good health. It had to have been all of a sevenday since the last time he'd washed up in the infirmary, and even those - relatively minor by his standards - injuries had healed up just fine. These facts combined to put a grin on his face and a spring in his step.
The chill candlemarks around dawn had been spent in flight with Nim, watching the dawn paint sky and sea glorious shades of pink and gold from the vantage point of a few thousand feet above the waves. Breakfast had followed, and then he had gone for a swim while Nim took to the skies again.
He'd been heading up to his weyr with the intention of drying off and changing when the sight of a familiar figure caught his attention and diverted his path. He was a few drops of water short of soaked, water beading on his skin and making his hair cling wetly to his face. Also involved in some diligent wet clinging were his clothes; he was stripped to the waist, shirt and jerkin tucked in a slightly-damp bundle under his arm. Old but still vivid scars stood out across his bare chest.
"T'aon," he said, raising a hand in greeting as he approached. He looked the other man over and raised his eyebrows; "What happened, you get in a fight with a meat grinder? That's the sort of look I'd expect from me."

Tedaon looked up and noticed the rider whom he had healed... And then gotten drunk with. He wondered how it was that he had gone from healing to drinking. T'aon. Right. His smile became incredibly forced and he nodded a little.
"That's what wrestling wild Whers will do I suppose." He replied with great enthusiasm, "I was actually just about to go for a fly with Diasith. He hasn't been out in a while, the infirmary's been that busy."
He smiled at the Black and then back at J'en pleased to have some company.
T'aon hadn't been good to the dragon at all. That was something he would have to remedy no doubt. Perhaps that was why Diasith had been so unwilling to talk to him recently. He'd been feeling some emotions from the Black but not nearly as many as would have been normal. He would fix all that though. Perhaps they could go for a fly together, him and J'en. It would be nice to fly with another rider. Anything to make Diasith start speaking with him again.
Neras squawked almost in resignation and hung his head a little knowing what was happening, noticing the signs. He didn't know really where his Cousin had gone... He understood but kept waiting for the Big Black to pop out of Between and return to them. For three turns he had waited for his friend and had only come to the conclusion that something had happened. There was nothing he could do except care for Theirs like Big Black had always wanted. |

"Wrestling wild whers," he repeated. Wow. And people said he had no sense of self preservation. Weren't healers supposed to be smarter than that? But shards, who was he to comment on what people did with their free time? Maybe it was fun once you gave it a try.
He nodded in approval at T'aon's comment. "It's a beautiful day for a flight. I was out with Nim earlier - you can't beat seeing dawn from five thousand feet." He felt a distinct surge of interest from Nimueth at the prospect of another flight with Hers, and a new dragon to fly with to boot. And a black too! Perhaps he'd be as much fun to play with as Tuthleth. Of course she doubted it, but she was sure he would be fun all the same. Can we, Mine? she asked hopefully.
The thought crossed his mind that going up soaked as he was in winter was probably begging for hypothermia or worse. But who was he to say no to a pleading dragon? And how bad a risk could it really be? Full flight ahead and damn the thread it was then. Otherwise people might think he'd gone soft and come down with an attack of common sense. And that just wouldn't do at all. "Nim thinks we should join you," he said, grinning at T'aon.

T'aon thought he knew what might be going through J'en's mind and the answer was. Yes, he could come and wrestle the Whers later. Of course, the truth to his injury was far more embarrassing. Not that T'aon hadn't been tempted by the thought of wrestling the creatures, far from it. He had just not been all that willing to let on what truly happened. Plus, he had practically convinced himself of his own story. He seemed to be good at that.
"I know! Diasith doesn't like waking early but we do sometimes watch the sunsets."
T'aon agreed with J'en's comment about the sunrise. Diasith rarely felt as though he could fly so early in the morning and didn't seem to enjoy his sleep being cut short. Not anymore. T'aon's face practically lit up when the other Rider offered to fly with them. They hadn't been able to fly with others for quite sometime what with hatchings to watch out for and assassinations.
"Of course! The more the merrier! Diasith," He turned and looked at Neras, "Oh. Where's your harness."
Neras drooped his head a little and fluttered around in circles until His managed to catch him from the air. Tedaon took to petting the Flitt and watching him.
"Oh. I forgot that we lost the harness a little while ago. That's ok though, we can still meet Nim." He continued with forced cheer.
He rocked a little, holding Neras whose wings were beating against his hands. He was not holding the Flitt tightly but there was still a sense of not wanting to let go. Of course, had Neras been truly alarmed he would have gone Between by now. However, he had become accustomed to the strange actions and moods of His.
T'aon got to his feet and released the Flitt.
"Diasith would very much like to meet Nim." T'aon stated, eyes a little deadened but hopeful tones ringing in his voice. |

"The sunsets are definitely worth watching," J'en agreed. That said, both he and Nim were early risers and much more likely to be watching sunrise than sunset. But they were both incredible sights from dragonback, and in fact he found he appreciated sunsets all the more for not taking the time to watch them all that often. Night came early at this time of the turn: perhaps if they stayed airborne long enough they might get the chance to watch it today. He grinned brightly in return when T'aon agreed to fly with them. "Come on down here then, Nim," he said aloud.
Face turned to the sky, instinctively facing the direction his lifemate was in as he addressed her, he missed most of the byplay between T'aon and Diasith...or rather between Tedaon and Neras, as he might have known if he'd been paying more attention. On my way, Mine! Nim called back happily. Far above she wheeled about sharply and entered a steep dive.
J'en turned his attention back to the here and now in time to hear T'aon commenting on his lack of a harness. "If you want to go and get Diasith saddled up first, we can meet back here in a little while," he offered. "I should probably get changed myself if we're going to be flying," he added, making a gesture that encompassed his semi-undressed state and wet clothes.

T'aon stroked the eye ridges of His and looked at J'en with a concerned and confused expression. He couldn't find a harness. Diasith was only small. Most of the harnesses were too big! No, there were none for him... How could he fly with J'en and Nim without a harness? He shook his head and rocked forward and back.
"I can't... I can't... Not anymore... He's too small, yes, that's the answer. Maybe he only hatched a few days ago. Yes, yes, that makes sense. He only hatched then. I must have Weyrling classes. Oh. Well that makes perfect sense." He spoke softly to himself.
He looked up at J'en when he mentioned something about being semi-undressed and laughed hysterically.
"Oh yes, it would be extremely cold up there in the sky with only that on."
He looked up at the sky and spotted a Green landing. A Green. That must have been Nim. Perhaps he shouldn't let Diasith become too friendly with the Green. They all knew that there were some Greens that attracted larger dragons than others. He didn't want to risk Diasith getting hurt. Maybe he could just stop his Black from chasing her.
"I'm not sure any harness will fit him. No, no. I think something's not right. That's ok, we can still meet Nim. Yep..."
His voice was almost choked as he forced himself to speak with as much cheer as he could manage. He had to show how happy he was at being a Rider. That's what he was, no doubt about it. |

At long, long last the penny dropped. He looked from Tedaon to Neras and back again, expression speaking plainly of confusion edged with alarm. Nimueth picked up speed as she sensed a disconcerting tangle of emotions from her rider; she landed a little clumsily and peered at him in undisguised worry. Mine? Is something wrong? The lack of response from her rider did nothing to reassure her. Clearly agitated, she shifted uncomfortably on her hind legs, eyes whirling shades of unhappiness and fear.
J'en hesitated, uncertain of what to do. There was a tension in the air thick enough to cut; the sense of something not being quite right that the healer often provoked was back at an increased intensity. "Are you alright?" J'en asked cautiously. There was unquestionably something fundamentally wrong here. He wasn't sure what; he wasn't sure he wanted to know what.
If he'd been more inclined to listen to rumour, he might have heard about the slightly unstable Dragonless healer. As it was he was still missing a few pieces to put the puzzle together. "T'aon?" he hazarded, wary. Though he wasn't entirely sure what exactly was wrong, he had the distinct sense that a misplaced word could cause the situation to blow up in his face.

T'aon shook his head violently and smiled sadly at J'en.
"There's no trouble. I just think I forgot. Diasith is still young. Still young. Yes, he's not been on a Flight yet and he's still here." He smiled and took the Black again, cradling him in his arms.
How foolish was he that he had forgotten he'd impressed the tiny Dragon? He was smiling as much as he could but his eyes were pained and tears welled in his eyes. He wiped them as best he could pretending something had fallen into them.
Neras was not as foolish as he seemed. He stared at the other rider, eyes swirling and then sent him an image. First of a Black dragon then the dragon disappearing. He then sent an image of the Dragon turning into a Flitt. After three turns of dealing with His Neras knew this much. For some reason, he was a dragon. What was more, he was the Dragon that had stayed with them so long. The one who had let him sleep on his wings and fly so far. The Dragon that had disappeared a long time ago without saying goodbye.
T'aon got to his feet, still holding the Black in his arms lightly, keeping him close as the Green landed. His face lit up a little and he stared at her in amazement.
"You are wonderful Nimueth!" He complimented her and her rider, "Truly beautiful. Don't you think Diasith?" |

Realisation hit him like a punch in the gut, and all he could do was stare at the little black flitt in undisguised horror. He was- he'd lost- His mind recoiled from contemplation of the idea. He couldn't even imagine losing a piece of yourself like that. The thought of losing Nimueth crossed his mind and he shuddered. Sensing her rider's distress, she keened unhappily, wings half extended and fluttering aimlessly in agitation.
J'en opened his mouth only to hesitate, at an uncharacteristic loss for words. What could you even say to something like that? Especially when the person you were talking to had, understandably perhaps, blocked the whole thing out completely. No wonder he came across as odd sometimes. Losing their lifemate would break most riders.
So for the first time in a very long time indeed, J'en chose to do something most people he knew wouldn't have thought him capable of; shut his mouth and leave the situation alone. Because this was very much a situation he didn't want to touch with a ten foot pole. "She says thank you," he responded, forestalling any reply Nim might have made. He wasn't sure what hearing another dragon's mental voice might do to one who'd lost theirs, and he didn't want to find out the hard way.

T’aon was thoroughly convinced that Diasith rather liked Nim. He was a black so he didn’t tend to speak too much but he was absolutely certain that he at least liked Nimueth. He would have said if he didn’t. T’aon had been with him long enough to know that when he liked something he usually didn’t say it. His emotions spoke more than words ever could. He looked at the green dragon and noticed she had some scars on her sides. Oh dear! He couldn’t even imagine how he would feel if Diasith had been harmed like that. Perhaps it had happened when the dragon was younger.
“Oh, I am so pleased.”
He wasn’t certain why she had keened as she had before but he guessed it was probably how she had landed. Maybe she had landed poorly and harmed her legs. Poor Nimueth… Ah well, she seemed to be feeling better at the moment.
“When he is older we could go for a fly! Perhaps when his harness is fixed. Uh huh.” He half mumbled to himself as he spoke.
He smiled in an almost hopeful way at J’en. Neras chattered a little, taking to the air and flying over His’ head. Tedaon didn’t truly seem to notice that the flitter had taken flight for if he had he may have questioned how a newborn hatchling might be able to take to the sky so easily. |
