She was a child, that much was clear from the way she was skipping, but she was also expected to be more than that. Even though there was an ever so slight limp to her step she still seemed full of life and spirit. It seemed that nothing could upset Fel as she skipped through the Weyr on her way to do some Chores. She would probably wind up having to sort through the food in the kitchens or something. She wasn’t entirely sure but she didn’t mind too much because she was Free!!
And a little lost. The thought didn’t bother Fel for she was to be a Rider, the first in her family and the most important one in her family. The one everyone would look up to. The thought made her incredibly proud and determined to impress to something. She would be a savior of Pern she had no doubt. She would show her brother that he should never have left her. Even with the injury he’d caused… She would be a Rider and he would be sorry that he had not stayed.
She stopped for a moment to observe her surroundings. She had remembered skipping through these corridors before and spotting someone. Perhaps they had moved off. Well, she needed to find her way to the outside of the Weyr and then from there she’d know her way into the Kitchen. She remembered that at least from when she’d arrived a couple of days ago. She’d arrived at night and had needed desperately to find food of some description. The Rider who’d brought her had taken her through to the Kitchens first and then told her to find the Candidatemaster… Which she had done the following day not wanting to wake the Rider.
She heard a sound and her eyes narrowed as she waited tensely for something to make itself known to her. She didn’t like the thought of being watched much less that something might just be sneaking up on her. Well, she’d just have to sneak up first wouldn’t she?
She stifled a giggle and pressed herself against a wall, shimmying her way up to the corner. She waited there for a moment and then jumped around a corner the thought of actually running into someone not crossing her mind. Thankfully, she didn’t hit anything as she posed a question. “Doyouknowthewaytothekitchens?”

Pash had only arrived recently. Figuring out the layout of the weyr well enough to get around was still on her to-do list. Luckily for her, she was generally okay with retracing her steps, so at least she could get back out no matter how far she went in. Generally, all the big important places had entrances from the weyrbowl, but the maze of tunnels in behind were what puzzled her the most. She guessed they were efficient... if she could figure them out.
She passed the kitchens and was headed nowhere in particular. Eventually, the tunnel would lead somewhere, and then she would know where it went. It was easy logic. All she had to do was explore, unless she wanted a guided tour which was considerably less exciting. And all of a sudden, her little expedition turned out to be a lot more exciting than she'd planned for.
"Doyouknowthewaytothekitchens?" came the voice out from around the corner. Pash actually jumped out of surprise. As her heart composed itself, her eyes took in what they could and she realized that it was a child looking at her - the child who had spoken. Pash cracked a huge grin, devolving into her younger self. Luckily, she remembered passing the kitchens and felt like a hero to be able to provide help. Any other question, and she'd be out of luck.
"Shells, you scared me half to death!" she had panted. Then, after a moment, "Kitchens? I do, actually!" Something sparked in Pash's eyes, and her grin slid into a sly smirk. She had a devilish plan! She felt incredibly juvenile about it, but who cared? Kids were the best. "What are you gonna give me in return, huh? I need some sorta payment for my services." She planted her hands on her hips, still smiling, still looking down at Fel. There was, of course, nothing intimidating about her posture. Mostly, she just looked like she was playing a great game of pretend, and just happened to be the evil villain or tricky gatekeeper or sly tunnelsnake. Pash hoped the girl would play along - she felt like being ten Turns old instead of twenty today. [/blockquote]

Fel giggled happily when her unwitting victim jumped out of surprise. She held her hands over her mouth stifling the giggles a little. The person she had just scared was some years older than she was. Probably almost an adult. Fel wondered whether she was perhaps a candidate, maybe a crafter. It would be amazing if she was a Rider! "I'm sorry." She wasn't, "It was just a bit of fun." She smiled cheerfully at the other female.
What was more, she was willing to take her to the kitchens!? How lucky for Fel. She just about skipped on the spot in happiness but then her face fell rather comically when the girl asked for something in return. She rested her head on her hand for a moment thinking about something she could offer in return for directions to the Kitchens. "Hmm... Well... I don't have much but maybe I can... OH! Maybe I can give you something. It's in the kitchens. I hid it there." She replied.
She smiled cheekily. She had nothing to give the person standing before her but maybe she could find something on the way to give to her. She was sure there'd be a rock somewhere that she could call a treasure. She thought she was actually rather crafty telling the other person that the payment was hidden in the kitchens. "I'm Fel. I'm a Dragon candidate." She stated cheerfully.
She actually wished she did have something to give the older female but most of the things she owned were not really of any worth. More importantly, they were all rather old. Even the few toys she owned... A couple of dolls and things... Were actually really not good enough to pass off to another person.

Brilliant! The girl wasn't freaking out, or anything. She wasn't upset, claiming unfairness, or anything of the un-fun sort. In fact, Pash wasn't even sure if she was telling the truth. She doubted the girl actually had anything in the kitchens. Of course, Pash didn't care. She was just messing around, she didn't really need anything in return. She bent down, near-eye level with Fel, and smiled.
"It better be good! Something magic or awesome." Then, the young woman spun about on her heel and started walking off back the way she had came. "C'mon, kiddo! This way!" She remembered which way she had turned to get here, but the intersection of this tunnel was still a ways off. No rush.
The girl introduced herself, and Pash, in a similar happy tone, replied, "I'm Pash. I'm a dragon candidate!" She realized, then, that there was definitely a huge range within the candidate population. Here she was at the maximum age, just barely being able to squeak into candidacy for a Turn, and Fel was probably at the extremely young end of the spectrum. There were probably more in the middle range, around fifteen to seventeen... That would be less stressful. They weren't wondering if they'd manage to Impress before they got too old, like Pash was. She reminded herself that it was just a chance, though, and a lucky chance at that. If it didn't work out, she'd just go back to stay with her brother and help out the holdwomen. No biggie.
"So, Fel," Pash said, striking up conversation, "Excited for that hatching? The guy who Searched me said she should be clutching real soon." [/blockquote]

Fel watched the older female as she bent lower so their eyes were meeting. Fel had the strangest, wildest thought that she was about to be yelled at but almost laughed the thought away. Where in the world had that come from!? This other female didn't seem the slightest bit intimidating. Not in the slightest and Fel must have been insane for thinking it. In fact, if anything she seemed... "Magic? Why of course it's magic. I wouldn't give you just any old thing off the ground." Fel replied as though it was a silly thing to even suggest.
Of course it was going to be a magical treasure. What other kind of imaginary object would she bother handing off to her new companion. She just about started skipping once more but slowed her pace slightly pleased that her plan had worked. She knew that Pash, as she had just said, must have been slightly aware that she'd been lying a little when she had agreed to the exchange but it was fun to pretend that she was actually a brilliant liar.
"Oh yes, I can hardly sleep at night. I'm new too but I can't wait for the Hatching. There must be another one soon, some people said that the Queen rose not that long ago so that must mean that her hatching is soon right?" Fel spoke rather quickly and had actually begun skipping again.
She wanted to impress so badly that it was almost a blight on her health. She slept poorly for her excitement and knew that she should have really done something about trying to keep herself more controlled. Still, she had enough sleep that there seemed to be no end to her energy. She also wanted to show just how great she really was.

"Good! I sure hope you wouldn't!" Magic was good. In fact, Pash was finding herself becoming exceedingly excited about just how magic it would be. What sort of magic? What was it in the first place? It could be any number of things. She had a strong feeling it would be entirely invisible, but the only way to tell was to get into Fel's little head and dissect her imagination. As neat as that would be, it would also ruin all the fun of a surprise, and that most definitely wouldn't do.
She grinned at Fel gushed about the hatching. It was exciting - Pash would give her that. The upcoming hatching was common knowledge, and she could definitely feel the buzz of excitement in the air whenever it got brought up. Hatchings were always a good topic for conversation, especially for eager candidates like herself. There was so much that she wanted to know. Would she Impress? What colour? Name? Gender? Weird habits? There was no good way to guess, no way to know ahead of time. The delicious temptation of the surprise was kept intact, like a carrot in front of a runner. Instead, the runner was Pash. She briefly imagined herself with runner ears and chuckled.
"Yep, there's a hatching, all right," she said to Fel, watching the girl skip along beside her. "I bet there will be a whole lot of eggs. I mean, with all of the candidates there are, there had better be! It was really hard for me to find a room in the barracks. Most of them are taken!" She wondered if she would end up having a roommate, or if she already had one she hadn't seen yet. If they were still Searching candidates this late in the game, there was a high chance of it.
"Oh, hey, I remember this corner," she said, turning it. She held a hand out and ran her fingers along the smooth stone wall. They were just about there. It only took another few seconds of walking before Pash turned again, into a wider doorway. She came out in the dining hall and grinned as if the rows of empty tables were just waiting to see her. "And there you go, Fel! Kitchens!" Navigational skills proven functional, Pash planted her hands on her hips. [/blockquote]

Fel continued to prance along beside Pash, a half skip, half gallop to keep up with the older candidate's strides. She didn't want to be left behind after all! Not when she had something magical to give the other candidate! She wanted to know what it was! She thought hard about what was magical in the kitchens. She could say that there were magical wooden Runner Beasts standing about watching them! Or perhaps tiny stone dragons that moved when you closed your eyes but straight away, when you opened them, moved back to their normal places. It was a good idea to be sure but she'd need to get her hands on some stone dragons to pull it off without disappointing her new friend.
No, she had something else in mind now. Something so simple yet magical that she was certain Pash wouldn't believe her ears! And it truly was an almost magical gift to give. Of course... That would probably constitute stealing. She'd pick one of the older, raggety ones there to be sure. There would be no problems!
"You really think so?" Fel asked in awe, "Oh I do hope that's what happens. Imagine if she laid over-um... Over a Hundred eggs! They'd have to get so many candidates!" Fel imagined, briefly, the Weyr covered in eggs and a poor Gold trying to protect all of them with people going about their daily business around them. She supposed that wasn't possible. Maybe if a Queen dragon lay Flitt eggs it would be possible! That was an idea!
She looked at Pash with wonder as though trying to guess whether or not she was telling the truth about the corner. She decided that with the promise of a magical item Pash had no reasons to lead her astray. Pash stopped and Fel poked her head into the kitchens. "Oh! That was quick." She responded. She pursed her lips but then smiled and rushed into the cavern. She picked up an older but clearly clean towel and rushed back to Pash.

The idea of a dragon laying over a hundred eggs was absolutely ridiculous, but Pash loved it. Sometimes, she found her mind to be a little too realistic. By 'a lot,' she was thinking about forty - a possibly number for a large golden Queen. Fel, however, had a child's mind that immediately jumped to the most outrageous things. It made Pash smile. Well, if a dragon laid a hundred eggs, they would have to all be tiny eggs filled all with grays. Then they could have entire Thread-fighting wings comprised of grays, and they wouldn't be all that rare anymore.
"Well, if it was far away, I wouldn't have remembered how to get here so well," Pash said, still smiling. Admittedly, she might have been walking a little fast, but she still hadn't been too far from passing the kitchens when she had been ambushed by Fel. The girl was probably glad their trip was short, though, especially if she was hungry.
Then, Pash watched her run off and run back... with a towel? Pash quirked a brow.
"Oh? Is this my magic reward?" She wondered what Fel was going to come up with. What sort of magic thing could a towel possibly be? [/blockquote]

Fel smiled at the thought of there being so many tiny dragons running about the sands. She held the towel out to Pash and grinned when the older female seemed a little disbelieving of the magical properties of the towel. “It’s a lucky towel! If you keep it with you you’re sure to impress! I am sure that it is a special, lucky towel.” Fel smiled and then continued after a moment, “But it can also be used for so many different things. Oh! Like tying things together if you don’t have anything else. And, when you impress to a dragon you can use it to play with them. It’s called an Imaginamatowel!”
Fel tried to assume some sort of a mystic tone as though trying to make the whole story about the towel even more interesting to Pash. She sure did like Pash she was so cool! Fel bet she would impress something just as cool as she was. Probably something just as funny too. Maybe they would be able to fly together in the same Wing. Fel had no doubts as to impressing in the upcoming hatching. She was feeling very confident about it all.
“I guess I should get to work huh?” She wrinkled her nose in annoyance. Helping out in the kitchens was kind of boring really. She knew it was important so she could have food but it was still not as much fun as some of the other chores she had done. Anything in the Weyrbowl was so exciting and fun just because she almost always saw dragons.
