It had taken him a while but he had finally come to accept the truth. This was not a dream he had been trapped in for two turns. It would have been a very good dream to be sure but he had come to accept it as reality. It was odd that it had taken him this long to accept that the blue before him was actually his dragon. Granted it was harder work than he had ever imagined, for the stories never told of having to climb all over a dragon to wash them. It was all worth it though, in spite of the extra chores he had to complete. Soon they would be riders together though. They would be able to do everything he’d never dared to consider.
You are taking a long time with the thrapth Mine. What ith wrong? Nothing. Then why haven’t you put the harneth on me? I was just… Thinking about where we should go.
Hephaeth brightened at that and shook his wings he had a great many places he wanted to visit now they could actually fly together! Out of all the training they had done their class on flying had been the most interesting. He wasn’t the best flier in their class but he was determined to prove that in the air he was more graceful than he was on the ground. In truth, he was rather awkward no matter whether or not he was in the sky or on the ground. Either way he struggled to keep up with his classmates or just about any dragon.
I know! The beach! I have wanted to go for a while now. I think it would be fun.
In the time Z’is had known Hephaeth he rarely got excited about anything other than flying… And flying. The beach was far enough away that they could take long enough to fly there and, apparently, this was the part that seemed to have Hephaeth so excited. Not the beach itself but just flying there. Z’is smiled at the blue and began sorting out the harness. They were setting out from the Weyrbowl rather late in the morning. This meant they could just about spend the whole afternoon on the fringes of the Western Continent on the shoreline.
I’ll just take a moment to sort this out. At that Z’is began climbing on the dragon, straightening the riding straps and sorting out his harness. He was well aware that at this time he would normally be starting to cook lunch. That part of his life was behind him... At least for the moment.

Mine, we should go to the beach today. You haven’t taken me there in a while now, Emith told her rider, who had just finished a swim in the lake. Smiling at the lounging grey, Krys wrung her hair out as she made her way towards her dry clothing. It would be nice, wouldn’t it? Maybe we could try to loosen you up a bit, eh? she replied jokingly. No response from the other half. Oh well. It’ll happen eventually. Maybe in a lot of Turns, but it will happen. Back to reality, Krys had fully redressed by the time her train of thought had ended, and she had just started to strap up her tiny dragon (well, tiny in comparison to the other dragons) when she caught sight of a particular Weyrling. It had been a long time since she had last spoken to the boy, though she did see him Impress the Blue that he was now mounting. It looked like they were heading out soon, but maybe they could chat? Come on, let’s go say hi!Emith wasn’t far behind when Krys went running towards Hephaeth and now-Z’is, the rest of Emith’s gear still in her arms. ”Zeis! Long time, no see, eh? Where you headin’ off to?” she asked of him, waving her arms madly to get his attention and dropping what she was holding in the process. You dropped the harness. Sorry, I’ll get to finishing you up after you say hi.Emith sighed in what seemed like bewilderment at Hers before addressing her new cousin with a brief Hello, and nudged Hers in the back. My straps? Oh, right.

Z’is was just about to instruct Hephaeth to take off into the sky when he was distracted by a call. Standing in the straps and looking down he spotted someone he had not seen in quite some time. A smile spread across his face, rare enough when he was with Hephaeth but even rarer to see with others. It had seemed a whole interval had passed since he had brought food to the candidates in the barracks. Seeing Krysthanine truly cemented the fact in his mind. He was a rider and would be flying and protecting their Weyr with people like the grayrider before him.
He waved back, not quite as exuberantly but with enough enthusiasm to suggest he was pleased to see her. Leaning forward he leaned on Hephaeth’s neck. Who ith thith? Emith and Herth? Yes. I met them when Krysthanine was a candidate. He marvelled at that with a shock. Had it truly been that long since he had first met the female? Emith was a full grown dragon now and he and Hephaeth were both extremely close to graduating.
“It really has been a while,” Z’is replied, “would you believe it’s Z’is now?”
Even saying it felt strange every now and again. Looking at Emith he noticed that Krysthanine had dropped the harness for the Gray. He smiled once more before addressing the question posed of him. “We’re heading to the beach. Ah, would you and Emith like to join?”
Hephaeth turned his gaze on the gray and nodded, Hello. Yeth, we’re going to the beach. It will be good to get away for a while. With all the training they had been doing leading up to their graduation some time in the sun would be a welcome relief.

Krys was more than delighted when Zeis recognized her, and even more so when she finally took in the size of what he had Impressed. It was fitting, really, for him to have Impressed such a humble-looking blue! A humble dragon for a humble person, perhaps? Most definitely! Had it really been that long since they had talked? She had seen the boy around and in the kitchens, yes, but really talk to him? Way back when he was delivering pastries that fateful day. Looking back, it made her feel… kind of old, actually.
”It’s kind of depressing that we haven’t spoken in so long, really,” she confided with the boy before chuckling. ”I can’t! And would you believe that Emith has helped me become less of an emotionally spontaneous wreck that you met way back when?”
It was rather strange, saying that. In retrospect, she really was bad at keeping her emotions in check. That ended rather badly many a time, and she was pretty sure that she had terrified the boy that one day… Oops. Can’t change the past, though, can you?
She beamed at him as a surprised chuckle rocked her and she collected the last straps to her dragon. ”Coincidentally enough, we were planning on heading out there ourselves! We’d love to join you!” she replied jovially as she made haste to finish with the harness and deftly leaped upon the gray’s back. Right Emith?
It is true, we had been planning on going to the beach. It would be nice to finally get out of these walls, she replied to Hephaeth, agreeing with him about getting away. It had been quite a while since she had felt soft sand under her feet and the salty sea against her hide. Krysthanine flashed a smile and gave a wink to Z’is. ”Well, how about we get going? And, by the way…” here a challenging tone creeped into her voice. ”Emith loves a game of tag!” With that, Emith pushed off the ground and into the skies, but not before attempting to tap the larger male with her tail on the shoulder. ”You’re it!"

Not entirely sure what to say in response to Khrysthanine’s comment about being an emotional wreck he merely nodded awkwardly. He’d seen so few changes in himself but perhaps they were more apparent than he could have realised. Perhaps he had changed as much as the Grayrider. Who could say though? He liked to think that he had stayed the same and that a dragon had not altered him yet he was feeling far more confident and willing to speak with others, especially Hephaeth.
What was more, the events of their first meeting were not at the forefront of his mind and Z’is was not nearly as worried about the fact that he was meeting someone who had, more or less, surprised him. His anxiety was certainly lessened speaking with the rider at the moment. Perhaps that had something to do with Hephaeth’s relatively calm demeanour.
“Well, I’d say the same about myself but, um, I can’t tell.”
They had both had their duties over the past few turns. She, her duties as a rider and he duties as baker and Weyrling, the latter of which took priority over all else. So, although it was sad they hadn’t spoken much it was understandable. At least Hephaeth was now fully grown and did not require attention every single moment of the day.
Tag?
Yeth… Thethe wallth are very annoying thometimeth. Hephaeth stopped speaking when Emith suddenly reached over and touched him with her tail. Ugh. Silly Gray… His expression fell dully as he watched her launch into the sky. His head fell a little as he felt His’ happiness, watching as the rider took off. Let’s go. Ugh… Do I have to play? It theemth very thilly… Yes. Go. Um… Please?
Hephaeth sighed and launched himself awkwardly into the air after Emith, wobbling about every time he flapped his wings but kept his eyes on Emith, trying to catch her. If he had been a less awkward dragon this would have been far easier… As it happened, he was not and it was not. He always seemed about half a neck length from Emith.
