Though the chill inherent to autumn was settling into the ground and water, there were still a few nice, warm days struggling to make themselves known, and Valha fully intended to make full use of the one she found herself enjoying.
It didn't take much convincing to talk Mith into going swimming – the water was one of the few things that Mith found easy enjoyment in, and Valha was not about to fill the poor tan's mind with all the dangers our there. No, Valha decided that Mith needed to be introduced to something other than the Weyr lake, something a little bit bigger, deeper...
They were going to the beach!
It wasn't just a trip to enjoy the nice day, though. Mith had recently made her first flight, totally by accident, having attempted to follow Skol to the rim of the Weyr bowl. She was more startled than frightened by the incident, but it made Valha realize that they needed to start building up the tan's wing muscle, as their first paired flight was swiftly approaching, and Valha had been incredible lax in getting Mith used to the idea that she was able to fly.
Thus, their trip. Mith was far too large to huddle behind her, or against her side any longer, but that didn't stop the young tan from walking with her head low enough the Valha was able to comfortably have an arm slung over her neck. The tan was also wearing the current incarnation of her riding harness, to which three of their four flitters clung. Fenis was splayed lazily atop Mith's head today.
She jerked to a stop, trembling, her head coming up so fast that Valha nearly lost an arm, and launching a squalling Fenis into the air (he simply let himself fall until the last second, popping between at the last moment and popping out so he landed on the riding harness with the others with minimal effort) as she first caught sight of the ocean.
That is a very big lake, ValhaMine! Very big. Mith's voice was quiet, sounding intimidated by the sheer size of the 'lake'. Something moved out in the water, and Mith shrunk down, belly to the sand, What are those, ValhaMine? Are...are they safe?
Valha laughed, reaching up to tug Mith towards the water line, “This is the ocean, and those are shipfish! They are very friendly, and we're lucky to see them today.” As if to prove this point, Hati had listed off, streaking across the water towards the dolphins, catching their attention. Within moments, Hati was engaged in a jumping/diving game with the small pod, “See, Hati knows it's alright! I was going to work with dolphins, before I came to Dalibor.”
Before your Mith? They will not take you, will they? Because you are my ValhaMine. Mith sounded concerned with the idea of Valha gallivanting off with the dolphins, but the worry distracted her enough that Valha was able to lead her tan out into the surf before she realized it had happened. That got Mith interested, and the next few minutes were spent swimming powerfully out towards the dolphin pod.
The dolphins were squeeing and and making noises that Valha was embarrassed to realize that she couldn't understand so clearly anymore, but eventually she was able to explain to the pod leader, partially through pantomime, what she was attempting to do out in the water with Mith while said dragon was distracted by the younger shipfish coming up from underneath her and tickling her belly.
Mith's head came up out of the water, where she'd been looking under her belly to watch the dolphins play underwater, On the beach, Mine. Someone is.. Mith ducked her head back underwater as another dolphin swam along her underside, the tan attempting to warble a tentative greeting – which was a little difficult, being submerged.
Valha looked towards shore, and, sure enough, she thought she saw someone there. She waved, wildly motioning them to join her, and then swam to Mith to start the explanation of today's game.

Now that you know how to swim, I reckon I can trust you in the beach! … What do you mean ‘trust me’? C’ian looked over his shoulder at the Purple and grinned mischievously before taking off at a run, arms and legs moving rather dramatically as though trying to taunt Shirath into chasing him. Looking back over his shoulder, Shirath was watching him with narrowed eyes, head held majestically high as he tried to catch as much light on his hide.
C’ian slumped over with a dramatic sigh and then straightened again to survey the dragon. Come on you overgrown firelizard! You never know what you may find at the beach! Oh! It won’t make me dirty will it? You know how much dirt ruins my beauty! Who will love me then!? Shirath, do you remember what you asked me at the hatching? You asked me whether I would love you and I will! Always! No matter if your hide got covered in hideous spots and dirt! FARANTH ABOVE! Don’t you ever let my hide become like that Mine! Well then, let’s go to the beach!!
At that C’ian took off at a run again, Shirath following at a dignified trot just behind him, wings open so as to allow some hovering every now and again when he became tired of running. C’ian kept looking behind him at the dragon, grinning stupidly the whole time. Shirath was wearing a harness but had seemed thoroughly disgruntled about having to wear one whining about how the straps would chafe and destroy his beautiful colours. Normally, C’ian tried to ensure it wasn’t on longer than was necessary but with Thread just around the corner Shirath would just have to toughen up!
They eventually arrived at the beach to see another pair seemed to have had a similar idea. Shirath’s eyes widened and he eyed the dragonet in the water. Why she is simply GORGEOUS! Oh I only saw her walking off the sands but did not have the chance to speak with this beautiful creature before us!
He bugled to the tan and started prowling forwards, in what he evidentially thought was a suggestive manner, tossing his head. In fact, he was walking diagonally so as to show off his zig-zagged stripes taking longer to get down the beach than was necessary.
C’ian stood there in shock for a moment, watching his dragon practically frozen to the spot. He rolled his eyes and then charged down the sands towards the other Weyrling. Noticing the wave, he returned it with a double armed one of his own, jumping up and down as he ran towards the water. A moment later he had charged in, splashing everywhere, and joined the female Tanweyrling. “HI THERE!! You must be Valha I’m pretty sure I know of you! Many many firelizards am I right? Not to mention dear Mith here! Hi Mith!”
He calmed down and then looked up the bank at Shirath who was still making his way down to the water. “COME ON SHIRATH OR ALL THE WATER WILL DISAPPEAR!” Shirath huffed into his mind. These things take time Mine. Mith will undoubtedly be impressed by me but if I hurry she will think me a horrid wherry. Yeah, yeah...
"AHH!!!" For something had just swam by him, brushing his leg.

Bobbing in the water, Valha watched as C’ian made his way through the water to her and Mith’s side, watching his dragon’s mincing stroll towards the water out of the corner of her eye. Mith, for her part, let herself sink when the other weyrling got close, letting only her head show above the water, her eyes starting to whirl faintly yellow in agitation until another dolphin nosed her and distracted her sufficiently, making her duck one side of her head underwater. Around her, Valha’s flits floated on the surface themselves – except Fenis, who hadn’t bothered letting go of Mith’s harness, and probably wouldn’t until he couldn’t help but come up for air.
“Yup! I’m Valha, this,” she patted her submerged dragon on the snout, “is Mith, those are Hati, Skadi and Skol – Fenis is underwater right now - and you are…C’ian, right?” She gave Mith a mental nudge, and the tan lifted her head back out of the water to look at her rider’s fellow weyrling. Then, she glanced up at Shirath, not understanding what he was doing – not even really grasping the concept of someone showing off.
…hello. Are you pink? The color didn’t seem quite right – she looked over at Skadi for comparison. No, not quite. Maybe he was a table…except that would be bad, because she broke tables (this was very firmly imprinted in her mind as something that should not be done – or rather, imprinted on Skadi who told Mith this every time Mith started wondering if someone was a table) and she didn’t want to break a table that belonged to someone else.
Or at all, really.
Before Valha had a chance to stop Mith from going down the convoluted and bizarre path that her mind was taking her towards, C’ian screamed. Mith squealed and disappeared completely underwater, while Valha quickly swam to C’ian’s side, in case his scream was prompted by something that would cause him to be unable to keep swimming.
“What’s wrong?” she asked urgently, ignoring one of the shipfish that had popped up behind her and was even now watching the purplerider with obvious amusement.

Ocean swimming sounded like a good idea today. In fact, it sounded like a great idea. Mizuko did not normally allow her green to play in the ocean itself, being rather too worried about the idea, and when Gaspeth was allowed in the sea, her rider always kept a close watch on her. This was less due to her doubt in the green's intelligence and more due to an overdeveloped sense of protection; Gaspeth was not going to suffer in any way, not ever.
Today was not every other day! Today was the day that Mizu took a chance with her beloved green and let her play in the terrifying ocean! As long as Cobbler was always with Gaspy to make sure she was okay when her bonded couldn't be watching her, things would be fine. The baker knew better than to trust Pastry with the task; the flit would probably forget during one of her 'stop' phases and then zip off to go do something else. Probably she would try to steal the bread that her human had brought along.
There are people, Mine, Gaspeth said softly, and Hers immediately snapped out of her reverie. Perched on the harness, Mizuko leaned over her green's neck and noted that what she had said was true. Well, the more eyes were there to make sure her dragon was safe, the better. And it looked like there were dolphins in the water, too! Good! She'd heard that dolphins liked dragons, and that they never let injured people drown. Presumably that applied to dragons too. It had better apply to dragons.
Take us down, sweetheart, the greenrider urged, and her bonded obeyed soundlessly, spiraling in slow circles towards the occupied stretch of beach. It took almost no time at all to land, and when they did, Mizuko quickly stripped off the riding straps, heaping them and the basket of bread under a tree where they would presumably be safe. That done, she looked to the two flits who still perched on Gaspeth's neck, and they trilled at her. Right, then! Time to go! The rider led the expedition out to the ocean, and paused only a moment to look to her dragon. Go on. Make friends, she suggested, and then set an example by swimming out to the two weyrlings and grinning at both them and the shipfish. "Hello! Name's Mizuko. I didn't know there were dolphins 'round here!"
For her part, Gaspeth was more cautious. She padded slowly towards the water, and then sniffed it before deciding it was safe and wading into the surf. There was a brownish dragon already there, and the green approached her before settling on her belly in the water, lowering her head to look at the weyrling dragon. The multifaceted gaze also swung to the purple on the shore. You look nice. I like your spots. And your stripes. She crooned, and then did so again as a shipfish popped up in front of her, squeeing. The dark green lowered her muzzle to touch it, and the dolphin whistled and disappeared underwater, playfully. Gaspeth looked about for it and then issued a mournful whine, projecting her mindvoice into the heads of both the younger dragons. My friend is gone. I lost him.
Pastry, seeing the fair of firelizards floating on the surface, issued a squeal of delight and shot towards them before abruptly halting flight midair and plopping into the water. She did absolutely nothing for several seconds, and then she trilled and paddled towards the other flits, apparently forgetting all about her brother, who was still sitting dutifully on Gaspeth's back.

Shirath stopped at the water’s edge and stared at Mith as though she had done him a personal injustice. His face seemed to drop and then his whole body collapsed into a sulk as he hung his head. He pawed at the ground moodily. Pink! Pink!? He was no pink! They were horrible ugly creatures and he was beautiful! So beautiful even Rukbat itself did not wish to rise when he was awake. Looking at the tan he huffed. Fine. He wad the most beautiful creature on the whole of Pern perhaps she had merely mistaken him for a pink because she was far away. Turning, he displayed his hide even more proudly.
I, my dear Tan, am no pink but the most beautiful purple you will ever have the fortune of laying your eyes on! One day, you shall be honoured to be able to say you know me! Of course, your own beauty is amazing enough I suppose…
He grudgingly accepted that her spots were indeed rather pretty. Not as amazing as his stripes but good enough to spark his interests. Not to mention she was also rather a nice colour. Deciding that it would be best for him to enter the water to show his brilliance he waded in the shallows for a moment, watching the Tan. He moved flirtatiously and slowly crept towards her knowing she would not be able to resist his charms. For all dragons should want him! He was aaaaaamaaaaaaaaazing!!!
C’ian didn’t respond immediately, not wanting to sound like a crazy person but when something brushed past his foot again he couldn’t resist. “There’s something swimming pa-“ He saw a shipfish moving along near Valha and immediately his expression became somewhat wry and sheepish. He pursed his lips and looked towards Shirath who had finally made his way into the water. Well that was good to see at least. “Uhh… Never mind…”
There appeared to be another coming to join them, a green and her rider. Clearly not one of the Weyrlings C’ian was happy to see a full-grown dragon. Perhaps she would set Shirath straight when he inevitably tried to flirt with the green.
Oh why thank you beautiful Green. She at least knew true beauty when she saw it, And might I say that you too are simply divine. When she lost her friend, Shirath moved towards her and bared his teeth in a dragon grin and projected to both her and Mith, Oh, worry about none of that, for I and Mith shall be your friends.
Surprisingly, Shirath did not seem bothered by the shipfish now that he had two females to woo.
