Things had been strange following Threadfall. He rather thought everyone was in something of a contemplative mood. At it was now autumn, C’ian had just finished flying with Shirath and as the purple pair touched down, he yawned and climbed off the purple’s back. It was laborious as always considering the size of Shirath. He had dreamed of riding a Purple, just as any other boy on Pern yet he had always thought he would have a beautiful blue. Never could he have actually seriously contemplated winding up with a dragon such as Shirath.
Sometimes I wonder whether things would be easier for you if I was a blue… Shirath rumbled sadly at the thought, I would be so worried if you wished to reject me because I am larger than a blue. C’ian was startled that the purple dragon had picked up the thoughts at all. He looked at Shirath in surprise and shook his head. No way! Sure a blue would be smaller but I would love you no matter who you were. You’re mine and I’m yours. Now sit up ya big palooka so I can get this harness off you.
Shirath huffed but C’ian could tell the purple was reassured and smiled at the thought. When he had finally managed to pull the straps off Shirath he rather felt like he should simply fall asleep where he stood. Instead, he stretched and walked beside Shirath to the Weyrlake. Their routine had remained much the same, a fly of the early morning, then a wash and oil. Of course, they were constantly watching for Threadfall or at least waiting for the call but they had so far been lucky not to be caught in it at all.
Shirath walked his way imperiously into the lake as C’ian flopped down on the banks, half asleep as he watched the purple paddling about. You said you were going to wash me. “Oh all right you great lump of a lizard.” With that, C’ian waded himself out into the water and assisted the large beast in the chore ahead of him.

The pair was bored, to say the least. Catori had been avoiding X’mor the last few days, mostly because Laemirath was becoming so close to rising, she didn’t like the thought of the man sleeping with someone else. Why couldn’t Koketeth be a male? I could always chase just to prove that you want to keep X’mor to yourself, Catorimine. But I don’t think Laemirath would approve of that. I must make her happy so that she likes you for Hers! Koketeth crooned happily as she tilted her wings to land on one side of the lake’s bank. Her hide was spotted with blood from her recent feeding, and she desperately wanted to let the water lap it off. Catori wasn’t one to keep her gorgeous green from being…well… gorgeous!
Koketeth landed lightly, and allowed her eyes to scan the lake. Only one other was there, and he was… a purple! Normally, Koketeth didn’t go for the kings and sub-kings because of their size, but what this purple had in size, he made up for in his colors! Oh, how vibrant and eye catching! The large green warbled out to the purple as she made her was into the water, then flopped onto her belly in the liquid, so that it covered her back and most of her neck. It was cool against her hot hide, and was refreshing against her burning, well worked muscles. She dipped her head into the water, holding her breath for a few moments, before raising it up out of the water once again and blinking the drips of water away. Now, her full attention was back on the purple. She was just about to send a greeting when she noticed the purple’s rider. IT IS THE MIGHT WARRIOR! Koketeth warbled out, letting her mind brush both riders and the purple dragon. Her eyes danced happily as she twisted her neck to look at Hers. I did not know he had gotten a purple, Mine! A mighty warrior indeed! The happy green turned back to the purple and C’ian and swam out to the other side of the lake to join them as Hers wandered on the bank with a smile on her face to join them. I am Koketeth! Mine is Catori! We have been friends with yours since…well… since Mine and I were weyrlings! For once Koketeth’s attentions were drawn away from admiring the male, and to greeting the young man that she and hers had once played with. She stretched out her neck to C’ian and crooned happily, looking him up and down. Mine, he is grown up now. No longer so little looking! The green crooned as she watched Catori wade into the water to her green, then climb onto the green’s back to sit. ”I can see that, darling! Imagine that! Meeting you here after so long!” Catori laughed out as she beamed at C’ian.

Nivoth! Please wait for me! Sh’len shouted, running after the little Green blur. Both hands held down a side of his sunhat, for it was the middle of the day, to keep it from blowing off his head. He was not nearly so scared of life now that Nivoth was in his, but the sunhat and habitual fear of the sun was such a habit that he couldn’t yet leave it off. Nivoth! The dragonet skidded to a halt halfway across the WeyrBowl, turning around to regard Hers with quickly whirring eyes. Mine, what is this? she panted. She pawed the ground with her foreclaws and spread out her wings, lifting her maw to the sky. It’s so warm! Why is that Mine? Sh’len finally caught up with her and rested his hands on his knees, panting as he leaned over them. It’s called Spring, Nivoth. It comes every turn, he explained. The Green dragonet, who had for the entirety of her short life only experienced winter, was fascinated by this concept. Spring? she repeated, trying the word on for size. Spring! Spring, Mine, spring! She trilled and charged into running circles around Sh’len, making it around a few times before throwing herself down onto the grass and rolling around like a wherry. Sh’len laughed, full of nothing but love for his silly, excitable lifemate. I LOVE Spring! she declared as she rolled.
Just as soon as she was down on the grass she was up and ready to go again. Mine, let’s go to the lake! I bet it is even better in Spring. Will the water be warmer too, like the air? Oh, I have to know! Come on, Mine! And she was off, with Sh’len struggling behind. In her excitement she nearly bowled into two of the dragons that were settled on the lake shore. Oh, excuse me! she cried. She wiggled to the left and right, trying to find a fast way through them. Sorry, but you’re in my way. Can I please get by? ”Nivoth!” Sh’len shouted, coming up behind her. Be nice! He knew she had not meant to be rude- she was only young and excited- but he didn’t want to offend any other Riders or their dragons. ”I’m sorry,” he apologized to the Riders that he could not quite see, hidden behind their dragons. ”P-pardon,” he stammered to the dragons as well, not comfortable with it at all. Nivoth, who would have normally been crushed by her bonded’s disapproval, seemed not to have heard him at all and was still looking for a way through the Green and Purple blocking her path.

The washing process would always take some time and even though he loved the company of the dragon he couldn’t help wishing he had a few more firelizards to assist him. As it happened, he did have one! C’ian made an effort to call Cirrus to him but knew it would probably be a few moments before the firelizard actually arrived. Cirrus had a tendency to forget what it was he was doing. Sure enough, it too a few moments before the blue popped into existence. He trilled and then flitted off to look at all the new things. His excited chatter made C’ian turn, just as a voice brushed his mind.
“FLIRTATIOUS STEED! PROTECTOR OF THE SKIES!” He barely even knew them by their proper names but seeing the pair caused his face to light up completely. He splashed through the water to meet them, arms flailing with excitement. The bewilderment from Shirath made him laugh somewhat more maniacally. “Catori! It’s brilliant to see you again, Koketeth, you look marvellous.” Oh you have known Mine? How fabulous, you must be a wonderful dragoness to associate yourself with such wonderful people. From what C’ian tells me, you and Yours are wonderfully intelligent.
Shirath stayed in the water for the moment and then moved his way out of it to stand closer to Koketeth, flicking his tail flirtatiously. If she loved His then she would surely love him. It was how these things worked. Another voice brushed his mind and Shirath looked about him, confused, eventually he spotted the little green. Why, you are very small but I have no doubt you will grow into a radiant being.
“DO MY EARS DECEIVE ME!?” C’ian clambered over Shirath, and poked his head over the purple mass. “MAGIC CASTER! What chance is this that we should all be brought together!? You have acquired a dragon! Wow! Congratulations! I remember seeing you at the hatching I think.” Well, he hadn’t been paying enough attention at the hatching having been distracted by the food he’d taken in with him. Here they were! The whole group of them reunited! It lifted his heart.

C’ian’s excitement made Catori beam and giggle happily at her “thief”. Oh, how long it had been since she had seen him. It was so long ago that she had joined in on his game. And to think, she never looked at him as a guy, just as a friend. It was rare indeed, which may have been part of why she was so excited to see him. ”It is so good to see you too! I missed you!… Ok I missed playing our little game, but that’s the same thing!” she giggled out as she turned to see where the voice was coming from, but had to stand up to look over Koketeth’s folded wings. Oh no way!
Catori slid from Koketeth’s back and into the water just as C’ian yelled out “magic caster”. A larger smile grew on her face as she danced around her dragon to look at the young man and his new little green. ”Oh! Shailen!!! OR WHATEVER YOUR CALLED NOW! SHES SO CUTE!” she happily clapped her hands over her mouth, earning an eye roll from Koketeth. I am prettier, Of course you are. But she is just a baby! Catori had to shoot her dragon a happy, calming glance. Then she looked back at Sh’len and C’ian. Oh, she couldn’t hold it in any longer. She launched herself at the closest one, C’ian and hugged him one armed and held her other arm open to Sh’len, offering him to join her.
”Last time I saw you both, you didn’t have dragons! Oh!!!” alright, so she was emotional from all her excitement and from the past stress of X’mor “pms-ing”, but that didn’t matter. She was happy now!
Koketeth, after being reassured by Hers, turned her full attentions back to the purple. The other green was still young, so she was not competition for the purples attentions, yet. She would deal with her for now. Intelligent? He really said that? Oh! I knew we liked him for a reason! But, I do not mean to brag, but I am the most wonderful out there! Well, next to a male like yourself that is! That must be why Ours are friends, so the most wonderful dragons in the weyr can be companions too. she crooned happily as she raised her head to its full height then cocked it to the side in a flirtatious way. She liked having him move closer. Meant he wanted to be close to her. Of course, she was the most pretty green in the world.

Nivoth forgot the water with all the excitement that suddenly bubbled up around her. She was delighted to see that there were people in the Weyr who knew Hers. It seemed to her so far that he didn’t have many friends (which was completely unacceptable), so it was quite an occasion indeed. The big Purple dragon even spoke to her! The compliment made her dizzy with pleasure, but she was nevertheless a bit confused. What is a Magic Caster, Mine? she trilled. But Sh’len could not reply; he was so surprised to see his old playmates together again that he was stunned speechless. How wonderful to see the Thief again- his idol- and the beautiful Protector of the Skies! He could hardly believe it was true. When Catori tackled C’ian with a hug and held out a welcome arm to Sh’len, the young Weyrling continued to stand where he was in his stupefied way. Silly Mine! Nivoth laughed head butting her bonded’s behind so that he stumbled into the hug and they were all three together. Oh Mine, look, they LOVE you! You all LOVE each other! How wonderful!! Nivoth batted her tiny wings and pranced around them gaily.
Sh’len blushed, pleased but embarrassed to be in such close proximity with his old acquaintances. Nivoth assumed that they were his friends, but he didn’t know where they stood on the matter. He didn’t know where he stood on the matter. Sh’len had never had real friends before, so he hesitated to use the word. Nevertheless, their camaraderie brought a smile to his face and he hugged back. ”It’ so nice to see you guys,” he admitted lowering his eyes bashfully. The fact that they were all impressed now could not go unnoticed because there was a small purple mountain in their midst and a little green bullet whizzing around them. Sh’len nodded happily, proud, when he was congratulated on his impression and returned the sentiment. ”Congratulations,” he said to his Thief. ”What’s his name? He and Kokoteth seem to get along.” Sh’len piped down, hoping the last bit had not been too presumptuous or bold.
Nivoth didn’t seem to mind Kokoteth’s dismissal in the bit and eventually stopped running around the humans to go bother the older dragons. Hi there, she said, sitting down and wagging her tail. She grinned widely as she craned her neck to stare up at them. I’m Nivoth! You both are so big and colorful, she admired. I’m so glad Yours friends with Mine- he’s very shy, you know. Will you be my friends too? I’d LOVE to have friends!

As C’ian was pulled into the hug he nearly burst with excitement. This was just wonderful! When they were all able to fly just imagine the games they might be able to play! Forget all that stuff about Thread he wanted to play games! Heck, maybe they could keep a tally of how much thread they all flamed and make a game out of the danger. Either way, C’ian was more than thrilled to be there. He was absolutely ecstatic. He spotted the tiny green darting about the area and couldn’t help laughing.
She was adorable, not like some of the greens to hatch at the same time at Shirath. Ercuth was perhaps the scariest dragon he had ever met. Even Waroth, renowned for being a Red, didn’t seem as frightening as the odd little green. It was odd that there was such versatility to the dragons, that one could be so adorable whilst the other incredibly scary. Well, none of that now. The group hug made him laugh even more as they all embraced. Adventurers/Explorers! They needed a song in all honesty, so much so that C’ian added the task to his list of things to do. Not that he was a good singer…
“Oh so long as a dragon moves, Shirath will get along with them. He’s that kind of a dragon I guess. Likes flirting with anything that moves. I’m surprised he hasn’t tried it on any whers to be honest with you. Congratulations to you too! Both of you! Catori, I cannot believe that when we met you were a Weyrling!” I have yet to meet any, but I am certain they too will adore me.
To the other two dragons he drew himself up. Well, they didn’t seem to want him at all! No his plan had backfired! Now they thought themselves too wonderful for him and, indeed, were not at all enamoured with his awesomeness. It was just the worst possible thing! Oh, but the smaller green seemed to like him. Shirath stretched out and looked at his stripes. I love that you love making friends, dear Nivoth.
Koketeth had included him in her list of best dragons in the Weyr. Well, he knew he’d liked her. The purpled shifted proudly, pleased to have been included in that list. He spoke to both dragons, both times. Why, you are kind to say so Koketeth. I always knew that C’ian had a good choice in friends too! Nivoth, when you are able to fly we will be able to show everyone how wonderful we all are! Perhaps we will even be in the same wing!
