It had taken him some time to grow accustomed to the workload involved in caring for a dragon but once Hephaeth had become a little more autonomous Z’is was able to spend a more time in the kitchens. His mother had been rather short with him ever since he had impressed Hephaeth and, even now that he had smoothed things over, she kept away from him. In all honesty Z’is wasn’t sure why. Was it not everyone’s dream to be Searched? Well, he had been and what was more, he had also impressed. He pressed the dough as if nothing was wrong. Z’is had never been one to wear his heart on his sleeve but emotions were harder to keep secret from one who shared your mind.
Ith thomething wrong Mine? You theem a little upthet. It is nothing. He heard a mental huff from Hephaeth and shook his head. There was no way to keep secrets from a dragon. Hephaeth probably knew exactly what was bothering him but had tact to at least ask him before he began delving into the thoughts Z’is tried to keep hidden from the dragon. If it ith what I think it ith you mutht not worry about it. Thingth will thort themthelveth out.
When he had first impressed and heard the voice in his mind he had been shocked to know that it was even possible for a dragon to speak with something of a lisp. Now, however, he was so used to Hephaeth’s mind voice that it hardly seemed shocking to him. What surprised him more was when he heard the voice of another dragon speaking in his mind. Hearing the voice of the Queen last hatching had been shocking enough without a happy pink hatchling speaking directly to him only a few days ago.
Well. Thingth will thort themthelveth out Mine. Z’is turned and spotted his mother leaving the kitchens. With a shrug, he continued his work also spotting a few people enter the kitchens one of whom he was certain was a rider.

Mizuko wasn't sure why precisely Gaspeth slept so much, but it worked to her advantage when she wanted to bake. Sometimes she got a little concerned about the slow green -- was excessive sleeping a sign of illness? Her eyes never showed any sign of grey or white, so Mizu was sure she wasn't diseased, but her dragon did sleep a lot. When she wasn't sleeping, her rider tried to attend to her as much as possible, partly because the green was just slow enough that she could get into some serious trouble if she weren't careful.
But then, she could get into trouble if she didn't pay attention, too! Mizu deftly switched her attention from her green to the kitchen, which was drawing nearer and nearer with every step. Today, as always, she intended to take over the food operations -- at least those that had to do with baking. By now most of the kitchen staff were used to her meddling, even if they didn't like it, and the greenrider had no qualms about striding right in and taking control. This was her intention today, too, and just like she did on most days, Mizuko started small.
There was a young man working at one of the baking counters, kneading bread dough, and he had made the fatal mistake of looking at her. Mizu, already clean, nonetheless stopped to scrub her hands and fix her apron before striding right up to the boy, sliding into place next to him and shamelessly beginning to shape a loaf of her own. "Hello!" she greeted, a bit late. "How's everything been going in here today? Nice and smooth, I hope." If things weren't going smoothly, the greenrider was darn well going to ensure that they did from this moment forward. To that end, she grinned up at the boy beside her, raising her brows playfully. "And before you ask, no, I'm not leaving. I have claimed this spot as my own."

It was strange to think that before standing for his first hatching his mother had been rather enthusiastic about his impressing a dragon. Following his failure she had seemed disappointed in him and tried harder to convince him baking was his future, perhaps convinced he would age out. He pushed the musings from his mind and started working harder kneading the dough.
Now that Z’is had absorbed himself in his work and just about jumped out of his skin when he found the rider, whom he had looked at before, sidling her way over to him. She had already taken up residence, as such, at his table. Brow creasing in a small frown he supposed that he could deal with another person at the bench. This was a kitchen after all. The greeting came a little late and Z’is looked up at her.
“Erm…”
But she had started speaking again. Clearly not content with a mere greeting she started asking about how things were running. He looked about the kitchens. Well, things were a little slow but going along fairly decently, or at least he thought they were.
“Umm…”
She had started speaking once more. Leave? Why would he ask her to leave? Truly baffled by now he opened his mouth to say something and then closed it again. Z’ithMine! Thay thomething to her. Don’t be tho thared, you are one of them now. You are a rider tho you need to thart thpeaking to them! And you tell me to be leth grumpy! Z’is nodded, determined to actually speak as Hephaeth continued to grumble in his mind. Clearing his throat he opened his mouth again. “Ah… Well, hello, I-I wouldn’t think to ask you to move,” he replied uncertainly, “’s far as I know, things are good…”
He looked around once more, wondering whether things were indeed running smoothly. He’d never truly noticed other people all that much, usually too absorbed in concentrating on completing his own tasks than the tasks others had been assigned.

This person was not very swift to respond, but Mizuko decided right away that she could live with that. That was totally okay, especially considering that she did occasionally overwhelm others. Apparently they hadn't learned to deal with slight eccentric bakers/dragonriders-undercover yet. But they would! Eventually, everyone in the kitchen -- including this weyrling right here -- would learn that she was not a scary person. She'd have them trained eventually!
He was opening and closing his mouth, much like a fish, but nothing was coming out. Well, whatever! Mizuko cheerily continued with the loaf of bread she had begun working on, expertly kneading and shaping it with hands that had seen rather a lot of practice. And then, at last, a response! Her mostly-silent companion spoke, and in words that were not 'uh' or 'um!' Triumph!
"Oh, good. I like this spot. Nice to meet you, by the way." The greenrider hummed and focused on her loaf of bread for a minute, then grinned brightly. "Well, as long as things don't blow up or anything it should stay that way." If the drudges didn't behave, Mizu would make them behave. It was how she operated this system: the cooks knew what they were supposed to be doing, but sometimes they needed a little nudge in the right direction. Or a really massive nudge, on occasion.
"You know," the baker remarked conversationally, not particularly caring if her tablemate actually wanted to talk or not, "they hardly make anything original in this place. Always the same stuff -- meatrolls, bread, meatrolls, bread, and then stuff for Hatching Feasts and whatnot. I think sometime I'll make some new recipe or something -- for baking, of course, s'what I'm best at -- and I'll make the drudges copy it just so we can finally have some variety around here!"

Oh shards, if things caught fire and blew up Z’is wasn’t sure how he would react. With all that could go wrong in a kitchen Z’is had been surprisingly lucky with regards to kitchen catastrophes… If ever anything had caught fire whilst he was in the kitchens he had generally stood back and watched as people set about trying to put it out as quickly as possible. He liked to think that if there was an explosion he would push someone else out of the way and be a hero but he knew he would probably just freeze up and get injured anyway. Well, that wasn’t anything they needed to worry about for even if there was a fire a bucket line could be formed in the blink of an eye to keep the fire contained.
“Y-yes,” He listened to her speak of cooking the same old boring things. In all honesty, he had never really noticed simply because of how routine his chores and duties here were. Looking at his hands now, he stopped what he was doing. Only a moment before he hadn’t needed to think about anything, his hands were moving basically of their own accord. Instinctively. Now that she had brought it up, however, he was inclined to agree. It was a little boring making the same old things all day long.
“Well, perhaps there are some ways to mix recipes and make something new. Spice rolls and bubblies…?”
He wasn’t sure whether she meant making an entirely new recipe from scratch or mixing two together. Perhaps even merely altering an already existing recipe. He supposed that something sweet could possibly go with klah or something… Perhaps.
That thoundth dithguthting Mine. Thpithe and Bubblieth? Why not jutht meat and meat? I can’t eat meat all the time Hephaeth… It’th the betht though! I want to eat one now! You just did… Well then, we mutht go later! I’ll be waiting in the Bowl!

Someday, everyone on the entire planet would see what a great baker Mizuko was. To achieve this end, though, the greenrider first had to make herself noteworthy -- which was occasionally a bit tough when she had a dragon to take care of -- and that meant that she had to do something noteworthy! In this case, she was going to make something new. Something totally, utterly, and amazingly new that everyone would love. Hey, as long as people liked it and ate it, really, she'd be happy. Fame and grandeur didn't really matter, as much as she tended to imply otherwise.
But making friends definitely did matter, and Mizu decided that she was being reasonably successful today, no matter how shy and awkward this weyrling seemed to be. He was at least responding to her, which was better than what sometimes happened, and she took this as an excellent sign. At his suggestion, the baker's brows drew together slightly as she considered, still absentmindedly working on the bread dough in her hands.
"Hmm... if you did it right, that could be pretty tasty, actually. Bubblies are delicious, but the spice would give them a little more zing. And adding something to bring out the flavour of the berries..." she considered for a moment, and then grinned brightly. "You know what? We should flavour this bread with a bit of spice! I bet it'll be really good. I'll be right back," she promised, and disappeared into the depths of the kitchen, reemerging a couple of minutes later with a few small jars of spice. These she set down on the table in front of herself and the weyrling, spreading them out and looking at them for a moment before turning to her companion and grinning challengingly. "Pick one and add it in, I dare you."
In their weyr, Gaspeth was stirring. She shifted drowsily, shifted again, and finally cracked her eyes open and lifted her head, blinking sleepily. Looking around, the green realized that Hers wasn't there, and then reached out to touch her rider's consciousness, just in case. You are baking? she asked with unusual alacrity, and received a wave of loving affirmation in reply. Gaspeth crooned softly though her human couldn't hear her, and rose to her feet, padding out to the ledge before hopping daintily off it and gliding down towards the feeding grounds. There was a blue sitting in the Bowl nearby, and she slowed, dropping to the ground near him and looking over with softly whirling eyes. Are you here to hunt too? Maybe they could hunt together... maybe he would even be her friend. He sure was handsome. All males were handsome, really... but especially this lovely, lovely blue.

Watching the baker was certainly an odd thing for Z’is. She seemed thoroughly… Enthusiastic about her cooking and just about everything he said. It was so different to his own usually quiet way of doing things, moving about the Weyr as though invisible. He had always thought that a servant’s duty was to remain unseen and unheard. Even though he was a Weyrling now he certainly struggled to adjust to his new duties.
As she wandered off Z’is followed her movement across the kitchen with a somewhat confused expression on his face. What was she getting? He may have been trained as a baker but this was certainly something rather new. Baking with someone to whom he was not related… And actually interacting with her.
When she returned a smile finally cracked Z’is’ features. It was small but still a smile as he looked at the spices. “Should I close my eyes?” He didn’t wait for a response and just picked a spice at random and sprinkling it onto the dough and began rolling it into his bread. “Now it’s your turn. You should pick three.”
Yeth! That’th right you make friendth and I will eat thome meat. No. But I’m hungry! Why won’t you let me eat thome food!? Because you will become too large to fly. Fine. I thuppothe I can thay here in the hot thun and… Oh! Hello…
Hephaeth was distracted by the green and watched her somewhat warily. He wasn’t really there to hunt but maybe… No. No I’m not here to hunt. Mine thayth I will get too big to fly if I eat too much meat. But it’th tathty!
He huffed quietly and watched the Green with interest. She was most certainly not a hatchling for she looked to be fully grown. He knew her name to be Gaspeth but this was all he knew. Hephaeth found himself wanting to know more for she was not one of his siblings and therefore she was no doubt much smarter than all of them.

Aha! At last, a smile! Seeing it brought a wide grin to Mizuko's own face, and she laughed at his question. Even if she'd meant to reply, she didn't have time -- one of his larger hands reached out and picked up a jar, and the greenrider watched with approval as he sprinkled the spice onto the bread and began to roll it in. "Three? Upping the stakes, are you?" The baker paused a moment, and then seized three of the little jars, holding them aloft. "I accept your challenge!" Fortunately she knew what they all were, and so had no real fear of messing up her bread.
All the same, she made a show of sprinkling the bread with her chosen spices, and then set down the tiny jars and began rolling the loaf again. Making an excessively blissful face, Mizu glanced up at her neighbour. "This will be delicious. I hope somebody in the dining hall ends up being totally surprised when their bread isn't precisely bread-flavoured." A cheery little smirk pulled at the corners of her lips, and the greenrider surveyed the unused jars still on the table. "And just think... they'll never know it was us!"
Making friends was such a wonderful thing. Glad to be acknowledged, Gaspeth crooned at the blue and then tilted her head slightly at his words, eyes whirling softly in confusion. Dragons cannot get too big to fly. The queens can fly and they are much bigger than you, she informed him shyly, completely missing the entire point of his comment. But meat is tasty. I am very hungry. I have not eaten yet this week, the green explained unnecessarily. She fluttered her wings, glancing longingly towards he milling herds of prey.
Excuse me, she said in a pleading tone, and turned, springing nimbly into the air and over the fence. For all her mental inadequacy, Gaspeth was not a graceless mover. At the apex of her jump, dark wings snapped open and beat the air, and then the green was properly airborne, coasting towards the herds. She chose a beast quickly, dropped down on top of it and snapped its spine before picking it up by the neck and carrying it back towards Hephaeth. It was not polite to suddenly abandon a conversation, and dragons weren't nearly as uptight about talking and eating as humans. Do you like wherries or herdbeasts better? the green inquired, tearing into the beast under her claws with great vigour. It was delicious.

Well, hopefully the people would like what they had created or else they would simply be in a great deal of trouble. He really didn’t want to wind up on the dead end chores that those misbehaving Weyrlings ended up with. Thankfully he had never been unfortunate enough to wind up mucking out the stalls. Well, at least this was a little more fun than sticking to the same recipe. Perhaps they would even become famous bakers…
“Well, hopefully it will be a good surprise…” Z’is mused quietly, looking at his own dough suddenly a little dubious. What happened if it turned out disgusting and someone came to the kitchens to complain? Z’is wasn’t so sure he would be able to lie to someone to protect himself and Mizuko from the questions that would no doubt be asked of the kitchen staff in general.
“Well, if it’s good perhaps we should keep trying to perfect our spice bread…”
Hephaeth stared at the green for a moment as she seemed to completely miss the point. He watched her as she leapt gracefully over the fence and into the feeding pens. Uhhhhh… What? The Queens were bigger than him but they also had larger wings and not a huge belly. Except that meat did look oh so tasty. Maybe if he just ate half of one… No, he wanted to be able to fly with His. He would listen to what Z’isHis wanted.
I thuppothe I like herdbeathtth better becauthe they are nither looking. Wherrieth are thtrange. He didn’t like the way they watched him like they were waiting for him to make a mistake where they could then peck him to pieces.

Not inclined to uncertainty, Mizuko grinned broadly at the mere idea that their creations could possibly not be good surprises. "They'll be wonderful! Everyone will love them," she announced in a tone of utter conviction. When the baker set her mind to making something delicious, it turned out delicious. That was the way of the world. Absolutely nothing was allowed to turn out bad under Mizu's watch, and so nothing would turn out badly! Obviously this was the way everything should work at all times, and to heck with any system that differed.
"Well, of course it'll be good. It'll be fantastic, and everyone will want more and we'll have to perfect it," the greenrider declared brightly. She, for one, was utterly immune to the poison of uncertainty. Everything would work because it darn well had to, and really, Mizuko couldn't wait to see the looks on people's faces when they tasted this delicious spice bread. They would clamour for more, and she and Z'is would be practically famous for making such astounding bread! Yes, that was the way things should work... and so they would work that way.
Oblivious to her blue companion's bafflement, Gaspeth went about her hunt just as she always did, and brought down a herdbeast quite easily. Tearing into it gratefully, she looked up when Hephaeth responded to her question, and crooned pleasantly, though she tilted her head a little at the weyrling dragon's obvious lisp. Was something wrong with him? She wanted to ask, but she didn't want to hurt his feelings... and he had answered her question, so obviously he was actually fine. Wherries are strange, she agreed in a tone of faint puzzlement. Sometimes I think that if I were a little dragon they would eat me. I wonder if they do eat dragons... small ones, I mean. Hatchlings. Do you suppose they do? She hesitated for a moment, and then made a small sound of distress. If I had hatchlings, I would not want their Mines to let them hunt wherries.

Well, if she was sure he supposed he could be sure. Briefly, the thought flickered across his mind that if they did happen to get questioned he could simply blame everything on her. However, being who he was, Z’is immediately pushed the thought from his mind with something of a mental scolding. He finished rolling his dough and placed it on a tray to be placed into the oven later. A thought then crossed his mind. A plan so amazing he was almost scared to have had it!
“Perhaps we should combine all of the spices here into one roll.” Z’is suggested mildly. He hoped she liked his plan. If not, he had another. Perhaps they could, as Hephaeth had suggested, add some meat to their meal. Perhaps dice some wherry and place it on the top of the bread with spices. At least it would be tasty for the dragons. Come to think of it, maybe the dragons would prefer cooked meals once in a while… With sugar spice and everything nice. He would have to think about that and perhaps, if he ever worked up the courage, ask the Weyrlingmasters whether such a thought was plausible. For Z’is was certain Hephaeth would eat anything he made for the dragon.
Hephaeth settled himself down to watch the pretty green at her work. Even though she was silly and not all that… Ah… Intellectually abled he supposed he would at least be able to watch her. That was interesting enough. If he could not hunt for himself he could at least watch another hunt… No matter whether it made him want to eat more. Why had he not eaten more herdbeast earlier that day? It wasn’t so much that he was hungry but rather just wanted to eat for the sake of eating.
Listening to her next statement he tilted his great head to the side with some confusion. As far as he was aware greens could not have children… He would have asked but she seemed a little saddened by the thought of hatchlings being eaten by wherries so he decided instead to comfort her. Well, as much as he could. She didn’t seem too bright so small words would have to be used.
Their Mineth would be good to them. They wouldn’t let them get eaten becauthe they feel their dragons. Mine did not let me hunt my own wherry for a long time. His mind voice was a little slower than normal as though trying to stress the point to the green. Be nice Hephaeth…

Mizuko liked that suggestion, and she let it be known with an appreciative chortle and a broad grin. "Sure! I hope people like it," she added, and then shrugged, finishing with the loaf of bread she was already making before setting it aside to be baked with the others when they finished them. More dough somehow found its way into her hands, and she began to roll it before frowning slightly, looking down at the stuff. Not quite as pliable as she wanted it to be.
"Want to go grab some water for me?" the greenrider inquired lightly. It wasn't that she was lazy, really... it was just that getting someone else to work for you was so much better than doing it yourself. She was glad to see the blueweyrling head off in search of water, and, not being entirely useless, she moved over to take over his work, kneading the bread as he had been doing so that it would be almost ready by the time he got back.
Abruptly she forgot about the work as the kitchen began to burn.
Gaspeth crooned sweetly to the blue, and snapped up the last of the herdbeast, crunching on it contentedly. She listened intently to Hephaeth, and tilted her head ever so slightly to the side as he explained to her. I know... she answered slowly, and might have said more if she hadn't felt Hers panic. Abruptly the green lunged into the air, wings churning, forgetting all about the blue as she sought to save her rider.
MINE!!
