It had been ages since Atenna had had a proper chat with Tedaon; their dedication to their respective Crafts meant very little time for friendship, and Atenna had also been quite determined that before she sought out either him or Tasakhori, she would be winning their little Candidate bet.
Well, maybe she was winning; she had only nine, and she thought there were about twenty Candidates now. Still, with the aftermath of the fire dying down, it was about time she found Tedaon and gave him a bit of a break. No doubt like everyone else, he'd been working himself to the bone, perhaps more than most, in the makeshift infirmary. Dalibor was beginning to heal, and so were those injured by flame and shrapnel. She just hoped he'd be willing to take a candlemark to simply hang out - that he even had the time.
Slipping into the infirmary, she glanced around. She had a couple of friends she could greet, still confined to bed by injury, and then she spotted her healer friend. "Tedaon!" she called softly, hurrying to his side. "Are you busy? I brought you something." She offered him an orange. "Just got a shipment in from Crescent, and I happened to be down there to fetch the new animals for the herds."

To say that things were busy was possibly the biggest understatement of the Interval. Tedaon had been awake just about all day every day since the fire and no doubt looked terrible. Being who he was and missing a hand, he was assigned to more of the post stitching care in other words, running around and trying to bring fevers down. Not to mention he had needed to treat some of the more difficult persons in the Weyr, namely Sagaral… He’d seen a couple of the candidates but didn’t know who they were at all. Although he, as a healer, had treated most of the people who had been injured in the fire he had struggled to know them as more than a face and their injuries. The exception, of course, was the few patients he already knew. Not conducive to winning a bet.
Therefore, when he spotted Atenna in the infirmary he became acutely aware that he knew few, if any, candidates. The Gold would clutch soon enough and he would know hardly any of the candidates standing. Time had been tough leading up to Threadfall and organising things, preparing numbweed and supplies, had taken up the time he would have used to get to know patients.
He’d just have to make things up.
He was good at that.
He finished up checking the bandages of a blue Weyrling and then turned to face Atenna, rubbing his face tiredly. But she certainly brightened up the Infirmary and a smile cracked his tired, withered face, as he looked at the orange in her hand suddenly aware of just how hungry he was.
“I’m sure I can spare time for a friend… And some food of course.”
Turning, he spotted Neras chattering away to a couple of firelizards and called the black over through their bond. Neras, being who he was, immediately flew over to join them and seeing Atenna chirped an excited greeting before landing on Tedaon’s shoulder.
“Shall we head out of here? If I stay too long I’ll be set to another task.”

Hey, no fair cheating! Atenna was working really hard to win this bet, if you could call sitting with people she didn't know at meals, and chatting over stable chores, to be "really hard." Mostly she happened to be in the right place at the right time, which likely wasn't as easy in his profession - or for dragonrider Tasa.
She'd half-expected he would take exception to her cheery attitude, or have no time to spare, which would've sucked. The smile only brightened her further, and she gave Neras a finger-wave before heading back out into the corridor. It was still a little smoke-blackened, but the air was finally clear, which was quite welcome. "Well, I wouldn't want to lose you to a task," she said firmly. "There will be plenty of time for that in a little while. You deserve a break."
Of course, it was hard to find a place to linger with the kitchen and dining hall still out of commission, and bringing only memories of pain and flame. Instead she headed out to the Bowl, figuring he could use some fresh air to chase away the pungent smell of medicine. Handing the orange over for keeps, she said sympathetically, "You must be having a horrible time of it lately, I can't even imagine."

Tedaon smiled back at the other Journeyman knowing that she was probably the type of person who would be loathe to really keen another from their duties. Fortunately, if he got away fast enough, he would not be set to caring for another patient. Not that he disliked it he just found it trying sometimes. He was also, however, thankful that she had arrived. With all that had been happening and all that would come she had arrived at rather an opportune moment.
“Well, it would be great to have a break,” he sighed softly, “It’s been tough but we all do our part. Most of those who were injured are much better now but it’s just difficult to give all of them the attention they need.”
If he ever found out what actually happened and who was responsible he would personally hunt them down. Probably wouldn’t be the only one either. He’d heard a great many rumours about who might be responsible the main one he believed was that a Fort rider was responsible. As much as he wanted to think good of the other Weyrs he distrusted the Fort Brown transfer. Perhaps he was prejudice but Tedaon, like all others, wanted someone to blame.
The fact that he distrusted both Fort and Brownriders placed a lot of his suspicions on the unfortunate sub-king rider G’kar. Of course, he wasn’t about to make his views clear.
“Well, Dalibor has pulled through assassinations… I believe we can pull through this too.” It was true. It would certainly be difficult but eventually they could get back on their feet. Hopefully in time for Threadfall. It was unfortunate that they were wasting a lot of their supplies on healing injuries that could have been avoided.

"I can only imagine," Atenna said softly. Sometimes it seemed as if half the Weyr had been injured, and though as scar tissue replaced burns and gashes, and smoke damage healed in the lungs, the number of patients must decrease, there still had to be a lot to do. "You were all right, weren't you? I know the smoke got into the infirmary pretty fast, were you there?"
The rumors had even reached Atenna, and she didn't know what to make of them. The fire itself appeared to be an accident, but when combined with the missing buckets, could it have been arson and thus sabotage? Had someone taken the buckets in the specific hope of a fire breaking out before they were noticed missing? Or was it a prank? Then there was the explosion - people were saying a flamethrower had been left in the dining hall. Some said one of the queenriders had done it, some said it was left on purpose so the shrapnel would kill, as it had. And there were even more wild things going around. Who to blame, and for what? It made Atenna dizzy, and she just wanted to get past it.
Unless, of course, there really was a killer stalking the Weyr. Then they needed to be brought to justice before they hurt anyone else.
"I remember those," she said quietly; she'd been much newer at Dalibor then, and she hadn't moved quickly enough to be involved in anything but the cleanup. Which was nothing like so time-consuming as this. "I suppose every place, Weyr and Hold and Hall alike, is bound to have their accidents. Maybe it's just because we're cut off on an island without easy access to supplies and reinforcements like the other Continents have, but it seems so much more serious when things happen here."

Tedaon shook his head softly at her question. Although he had inhaled some smoke he had barely noticed with all the patients he’d needed to care for. As soon as he’d heard the call and smelled the smoke he had charged from the infirmary knowing that they would need healers on triage. Those who could determine relatively swiftly who needed healing first and who could wait with an apprentice… Or a candidate basically trained in healing. Fortunately, there were a few of those around.
“No I left almost as soon as the call went out. There was a need for more immediate healing. I believe that if we had stayed in the infirmary any longer the Weyr may very well have had more deaths…”
He’d heard that a dragonless man had passed in the fire. It was saddening that there were those around who had lost their dragons… Well, at least he would be safe with his dragon now. Forever in the comfort of his bonded. Life without a lifemate was hardly a life… Tedaon pushed these thoughts from his head as he listened to what Atenna was saying about their geographical location.
It was true enough that they were relatively cut off from the rest of Pern but that didn’t stop people from betweening to help them. Weren’t there ways to swiftly contact the other Weyrs? Well, if there weren’t there should have been. Firelizards were helpful enough. He knew what had happened though. He’d pulled the shrapnel out of people, he knew something had exploded and wasn’t daft enough to brush it off as an oven. A flamethrower had been left there and somehow failed. Well, as was understandable considering the heat of the fire.
Things may have been contained quicker but if the flamethrower had been left Tedaon could only assume that the fire had spread faster than the Weyrwomen could comprehend. When it came down to it, shrapnel wounds were easier to heal than serious burns.

More deaths...it was a good thing the fire hadn't managed to spread any further. A good thing the Weyr was made of stone. It might have conveyed the suffocating smoke, but even the terror of an oil fire didn't go far. "I'm glad you were all able to escape," she said softly.
Atenna knew that help could between in, and it was faster than contacting the Hold; perhaps she just thought as a Herder, who knew that it was difficult to safely transport large quantities of animals in such a fashion. It would be easy to arrange for shipments on dragonback of regular supplies, but daily she feared an illness in the herd, and how difficult it would be to replace any animals that died, since they would have to come in across the sea - a passing that, short hop though it was from Crescent, did grow a bit more treacherous as winter weather approached.
She reached over to rub his shoulder, shaking her head as if she could force the sorrowful thoughts out through her ears. "Let's talk of more pleasant things," she suggested. "I didn't come get you so that you could dwell, you know! Eat your orange, and let's discuss...oh...Candidates." She gave him a wicked little smile. Definitely winning.

None were more thankful than he that they had managed to escape alive. Well, they weren’t precisely in the vicinity of the fire. Perhaps the explosion made it more possible and likely for injury but Tedaon wasn’t so sure about that. Well, considering he had left the infirmary as soon as the call went out he didn’t really know exactly what happened there. He had just assumed people followed him and others out.
At her touch he deflated a little more but listened to her words, trying to cheer up. It was tough though. The keening of the dragons had filled his mind as it had a few times before. These past few sevendays had been filled with the memories of the dragons keening for their lost fellows. He nodded ever so slightly. “True enough.”
Atenna was right, though, she was here to cheer him up not make him dwell on the things that had happened. They could, of course, discuss the upcoming hatching but Tedaon figured he should ask her about some other things first. He’d told her all about his problems but surely she was struggling with some of the problems that had occurred with the beasts of the Weyr.
“And how are things with the Herders? I recall that the Runner's food troughs were put to some use. Must have scared them to no end.”

Well, Atenna hadn't come here to complain about her own problems, but if he offered, she wasn't about to press for more! Maybe he was avoiding the Candidate talk because he didn't even have any. That thought cheered her right up.
"They were," she said. "It was a little trouble to get things back to normal, ensuring that everything found its way back to where it belonged - and of course, the bucket shortage isn't helping us either. I suppose I'd noticed a couple of them missing before the fire, but I just assumed they were in use and found something else..." That preyed on her mind a little, truth be told. If she'd gone and found someone (but who? whose responsibility, really, were they?) and mentioned them missing, would they have been found before the fire? Was the tragedy in some small part her own fault for not speaking up?
For a moment there was a darkness in her eyes, and then she brightened again. "But our animals were brilliant. A few of them were put to use carrying supplies around, and there were no terrible accidents among them. They were a little skittish for a sevenday or two, but all is back to normal now. I just feel for the people who might have lost pets in there." Canines or felines, hanging out in the kitchen in hope of table scraps...many of them would belong to the Weyr itself, but some could be pets. And retrieving what was left of their small bodies had never been a priority.

At least they hadn’t lost their whole supply of herdbeasts or runners from the animal’s fear of fire. He could only imagine some of the damage they could have caused to the fences in their frenzy to get away from the fire. Any creature would do the same in a similar situation. Well, most humans would do the same some of them rather liked charging in headfirst… The buckets were a mystery to him and certainly cause for concern. Well, hopefully they would find out about that soon enough…
Being a healer he sometimes got used to the loss of life. That frightened Tedaon some. That he could be so calm when watching someone slip away… But then, most times he became emotionally tied with every person to walk into the infirmary no matter how much they annoyed him. It must have been even tougher with a herder such as Atenna. She seemed a compassionate sort and to see that many animals injured, not to mention people, must have tugged at her heartstrings.
“Yes, I can only imagine. I would hate to lose Neras, I can’t even bear the thought… I think I spotted one of our apprentices with a runner. Not sure what was going on there but it’s great that they remained so calm. I think that’s a credit to the herders who train them.”
They would probably get onto the topic of the hatching and Tedaon had only a couple of candidates he knew by sight, nothing else. Not to mention they should sort out a reward. He’d heard enough rumours about a gather coming up to know that it was probably going to happen… When the runners started talking one might as well throw on their best clothes, catch the nearest dragon and head on over to the Holds. He’d heard a couple discussing the matter when getting a routine checkup.
