Or rather, not a snack at all, but a feast.
It was not of the splendor of a Queen dragon's hatching, but the excitement was still there. The food laid out on the tables was more intimate and homely, without the air of mass production about it. A survey had passed through the hands of the willing wherhandlers inquiring as to their favourite food, which was then given to the headwoman to see out. The feast, then, was highly personalized thanks to the small number of attendees. There was a leafy salad with a light vinaigrette for Obelir; Hester's precious custard; the tripe that Bri insisted on; medium-rare herdbeast steaks for Audren, and so on. Enough plates were set for every handler and handler-to-be, as well as a few extras for the insomniac food enthusiasts.
When everyone had settled, Audren ceased her pacing and light pleasantries to mount the podium. It had been dredged up from the depths of the storage rooms for this midnight occasion especially. She smiled from where she stood and looked at all thirty-five of the familiar, wherhandling faces. Perhaps it should have been thirty-nine - perhaps Delgar should not have died on the day of the Hatching, perhaps Thread should not have consumed Mokai and Nikan, perhaps Rethalt should not have transferred so soon, but she was grateful for that strong and promising thirty-five. She tucked her hair behind her ears and it sprung back out of place, but Audren began anyway.
"Black Class Wherlings," she said once the murmur of the crowd had died completely. "You have been acting as fully-fledged handlers already. The test last night was little more than a formality. I didn't really have any doubts about you.
"So I guess we'll just make it official. Welcome to the ranks of Dalibor's Wherhandlers." She beamed, satisfied with the short, no-nonsense nature of her speech. "Here," she said, lifting a carved wooden box from the table, "Are your new knots, Wherhandlers." As the new graduates shuffled into order as previously discussed, Audren pressed on excitedly. "I'd also like to congratulate Kalenna of gold Kalesk. Or warn her, maybe, as she is graduating straight into the position of Betahandler. You can thank Weyrwoman Fajra for that one, Kalenna." The redhandler stepped off the podium to the sound of applause muffled by the extra size of the hall. "Good luck to all of you." To each shoulder in line she affixed a new knot, and to each hand she offered a warm shake as a friend, and no longer as a teacher. To Kire, she gave a particular look - and the girl would know what it meant. Many a time they had talked about taking control of Kisk's few brain cells and Audren had made sure the girl knew she was only barely passing.
Eventually, everyone took their seats once more, and there was nothing important left for Audren to say by official standards. By the standards of the hungry, though, it was an entirely different matter. "Feast time," she grinned, and tucked in. [/blockquote]

It was hard to think that already Mavrin was at the end of his wherling training. Hadnt it been just yesterday that he had impressed? No, the many memories with Mavrisk told him that wasn't the case. Running fidgety fingers through his hair, Rin tried to take a steadying breath. There was nothing to be nervous about. Yet, standing in the line with the other Wherlings, Rin couldn't help but clench and unclentch his fists. Mavrisk'sMavrin fine. Mavrisk can do, Mavrin can too! The wher's voice was the only thing that seemed to calm him.
Nodding subtly, Rin smiled and reached down to scratch the black's eye-ridges. Mavrisk made a grumbling croon in return. No longer was he a tiny little thing, though he was one of the smallest blacks in his class. The wher was more steady though, not as easily scared, more mature. Mavrin stupid if think Mavrisk no scared. Mavrisk still fear Damask. Rin looked at the red and shivered. That's probably for the best though. That's not fear, that's being smart. At least you're not scared of the dark anymore.
The black looked at his paws. This true. Rin was about to reply when Audren's voice interrupted his thoughts. So it begins....the wherling-now wherhandler-smiled as she finished her speech. They did it! They graduated. Mavrisk feel no different. Rin laughed and rubbed the black's shoulder. "You wouldnt Mavvy." He turned back as Audren came by to give him his new cords and shake his hand. He didn't miss the look she gave Kire either. Mavrisk chortled at His' thoughts.
Be nice. Mavrisk stopped his laughing and shook his head. Mavrisk laugh at obvious, Kisk stupid...Mavrisk find funny. No mean be mean. Just find funny. Rolling his eyes, Rin ignored the wher. He was too happy to care much anyway.

The night was electrified. There was such excitement in the air like nothing she had experienced. Well, nothing she had experienced since the last few hatchings. Even then, the wher hatching that had borne Kisk had been filled with a rather demure and sedate excitement, no one wanting to think too much about the cost of their new partners. Kire glanced over at Damask for a brief moment and then looked back as Audren began speaking. There would never be a woman whom she respected and feared more. Kire well remembered the talks they’d had about Kisk but she’d been unwilling to accept what was said. Deep down, perhaps, she knew Kisk was not the smartest wher but she hardly accepted it as a conscious thought.
On the flip side of that, she knew she had barely passed. Probably at the bottom of the class but Kire did not blame Kisk for this, she blamed herself for not training as hard as she possibly could. Well, the very fact that they were graduating was something, wasn’t it? At this thought, Kire smiled and sat up a little straighter, feeling better about the whole situation.
As they received their knots, Kire beamed but the smile faltered slightly at the look from Audren. “Oh… Um… Thank you for everything. It would have never been possible without your leadership…” AND KISK! KISK AM BIG NOW! BIG AS MUMMYAUSK! Kire smiled at the shout into her mind and looked back at the black wher as he waggled his body. He was not the largest of whers but by Faranth he was hers and she loved him with all her being. He was the best, no matter what. She was a wherhandler now and with all the responsibilities that came with it. No matter what happened, she would protect the Weyr.

As Audren affixed her new badge to her shoulder and shook her hand, though she kept a smile on her face, Damali had never missed Delgar more than she did now. Even for a long while after she returned to her seat, leaning sideways out of her chair against Damask (and pitying the poor handler seated her left, on the far side of her bulky red), she kept lightly touching the badge.
Damask bumped her head against her handler’s chair firmly, rocking it violently for a moment, Sad thought bad. Stop now, feed Damask. All good. Damali smothered a quiet laugh and slipped some of the breaded fish off her plate and into her wher’s eager mouth.
She caught the looks cast Damask’s way, though, frowning at the handlers lightly, even as the wher in question blithely ignored them. Still the fear of Damask, despite how well she’d been behaving for the last turn, without any of her fellow classmates really even witnessing the worst of the red’s tantrums…
Well, except the consistent playful chewing on Sagaral. That little reminder was like cold water on her mild irritation – after all, she had been talked to once of twice (or more) about that. That reminded Damask of things other than food, though, and the red lifted her pointy head to look around for her favorite blue.
Damali, setting a light hand on Damask’s hip to warn the red off from actually getting up to look for Sagarsk, leaned forward against the table and called out towards Kalenna with an easy grin, “I don’t know whether to offer my condolences or my congratulations, Betahandler!”

A rare, bright smile had settled on Kalenna's lips as soon as she woke this evening, and it hadn't disappeared yet. She had questioned, at times, whether or not she would be allowed to graduate with the rest of the Black class, given that Kalesk was younger than the rest and their training encompassed far more than what most received. Even when she'd learned that they would assuredly join their fellow wherlings, she had doubted that they would be given any particular rank until they had more experience.
This, then, was the culmination of all her hopes and dreams, and she was proud of both herself and her wher. Especially her wher. They'd worked hard for this, but she still recognised that it was by the grace of Audren and Fajra that they were already given so much in return.
She listened to Audren's speech, nodding at the end of it. She most certainly would seek out the Weyrwoman to thank her. Kalenna clasped the alphahandler's hand warmly when her turn came to receive her knots, and she murmured, "Many thanks." Audren was now not merely teacher and boss, but friend.
The time for personal congratulations to most of the class would come after food, she rather thought, and she took her seat. However, at Damali's call, she gave a rather uncharacteristic laugh. "Congratulations tonight," she suggested. "Condolences later, when I dive into all the paperwork." Although getting to dig through records and help keep them was something she very much longed to do, actually.
By now Kalesk had nearly attained her full size, and therefore she could no longer fit into her accustomed place beneath the table, observing and lurking in the darkness. Tonight, however, she didn't wish to. She settled in behind Kalenna, golden head held high, and watched the feast keenly for any signs of trouble. For the most part, though, she was relaxed. This was a good night. They had achieved much, just as they deserved to.
Her head whipped around when someone who had not been invited entered the room, however. Admittedly, there were extra plates for the nightdwellers who might be hungry, but Edison the wher candidate did not have the sense to slip in quietly, without intruding, and then leave again. No, he'd heard there was to be a feast, and he wanted in. Especially since he had people to congratulate!
Grabbing a plate, he looked around, spotted Kire, and slid in beside her regardless of whether there was enough room or whether he really belonged here. In his booming voice, he said, "Good job, my friend! Glad to see you're full handler now! Suppose I'll see you more often on patrols?"

Kire barely noticed the arrival of another person in the Hall being far too excited about her graduation. That coupled with the fact that she was generally unobservant resulted in a small jump of fright when Edison sat beside her. She was so excited that his congratulations made her want to hug the man. Which she tried to do regardless of her personal questions about the acceptability of hugging people she was not entirely intimate with. “Oh thank you so much! I am so happy. I had worried that… Well we’ve graduated now and that means that we’ll be able to so patrols and everything. It will all be wonderful.” She took some food for herself smile not budging an inch from her face. Even in light of the fact that she had only barely scraped through it meant nothing now that she was a fully-fledged handler.
Kisk bugled a greeting to Edison and bumped his head affectionately against the Investigator’s leg. He remembered that at least. Something about searching for clues and finding them! Yes, this was his Investigator buddy and they could find anything if they only worked hard at it. KISK AM MIGHT WIN!! BE BEST WHER THERE BE FORSHARDS! MUCH BIG NOW!!
Puffing himself up, he paraded about around the table near Kire in a proud fashion. He wanted one of those things Kire was wearing but for some reason he didn’t get one. It would have been great fun to have one of those things on his chest like she did then everyone would know how smart and clever he was to have graduated. He was smart after all! Yalenia had been in the hall for the speeches and was not seeking an opportunity to congratulate Kalenna and potentially a few other new wherhandlers. For the moment she stayed nearer to the doors awaiting a more opportune moment to approach the new Betahandler.
