In the back of her mind she knew that her graduation as a wherhandler had been… Well, lucky. She hated to think about it but she had been practically at the bottom of the group and it was all her fault for not concentrating more on keeping Kisk on task. At the moment, they were patrolling the dusk to midnight shift near the northern part of the Weyr. It had been good to see they were paired with such a responsible older duo and Kire truly thought they stood a chance with this.
It was difficult to be sure, but Kire’s face was determined as she fought to keep Kisk on task. Fortunately, their shift was nearly over and the mental exhaustion would soon end with it. Kisk had been rather good most of the night he’d tried to wander off a few times, bounding off into the darkness after who knew what but she’d been able to call him back after a while and they hadn’t really deviated from their path. Only a few more moments and…
Kisk suddenly bugled a warning, standing alert as he looked off into the darkness, it wasn’t like the other calls of the night, this one was different. Throughout the night, he had been chasing firelizards and tunnelsnakes but this wasn’t like any of that. It sent chills through Kire to hear him so alert but the illusion ended when Kisk’s tail began tentatively waggling back and forth. KNOW! KISK AM KNOW!
Well they’d finished their shift but Kire was highly reluctant to just leave when Kisk had smelled something. Then again, it could very well have just been the people coming for the next shift… Or even Asterisk for all she knew. Well, caution was probably the best option here. KISK SMELL! KISK SEE NOW BESTKIRE WANT SEE!!

Luckily, the graduates largely knew what they were doing. They probably knew their patrol shifts and routes better than Audren did, but still, the redhandler had spent the entire evening making sure that they were all settled well into their patrols and knew what they were doing. Some had not done solo patrols yet. Most were obviously doing a fine job. Even Hester of Hessk insisted that he was totally okay and told he she had better calm down. The boldness in his comment was a curious thing; things had changed now that they were not her students.
Needless to say, it had been strange for her to let go of them like that. A Turn and a half of taking them under her wing had changed so quickly and it made for a very chaotic evening. Her own personal schedule was entirely off due to her paranoia. She had meant to restock the towels and firewood in the handlers' quarters early enough to have plenty of time to relax before hers and Ausk's patrol. However, by the time she had found Damali and Damask to help, strapped saddlebags to an ornery alpha red, and made it across the moonlit bowl and into the cavernous storerooms to pick up the supplies, it was nearly time for the patrols to switch.
Audren was running late and Ausk converted her anxiety into irritability. Needless to say, it wasn't a very good start to the night.
"We'll be late for our patrols," Audren said to Damali, voice rushed like her footsteps were. It was the seventh night of the week; Darryl would be finishing the shift Damali was to pick up, and Baharl - Audren's. They should be alright for a few more minutes. "Shard it." Ausk stalked behind her, tail dragging and satchels laden with firewood. The darker red growled to no-one in particular.
In truth, the speed Audren was walking wouldn't save enough time to make it worth making Damali nervous. She caught herself and slowed, shaking her head at her own nonsense. It was one night. It wouldn't happen again. She hated to be late, but she also had to keep calm, lest Ausk translate it into hostility towards Damask. A fight between two reds would only slow them down even more. Still, the Alphahandler remained so focused on getting out of the northern caverns, across the bowl, to the handlers' quarters and then out to her shift that she hadn't been expecting the bright eyes of little Kisk.
She jumped, a gasp leaping in her throat. KISK, Ausk clarified with a snap of her jaws, and Audren sighed heavily. Her posture dropped. It was just Kire and Kisk, and she had been startled out of her wits. That was embarrassing. The red had, predictably, turned her shouting to her poor offspring as if they weren't related. KISK SCARE AUSK'S. AUSK SCARE-- [/i] Stop, Audren commanded wearily. "Who's supposed to be replacing you?" the woman asked the girl, too frazzled to draw the names out of her head. It was clear in her voice and in her eyes that she was exhausted and needed to calm down, but she tried - almost too hard - to remain composed and responsible in the face of her fellow handlers.[/size][/blockquote]

Damali had been on edge since the moment Audren had found her and her red and recruited them to assist with packing firewood and towels back to the wherhandler’s quarters. Not because she was going to be late for her shift – no, Darryl would forgive her a few minutes – but because Audren was tired and rushed. Stressed.
Damali knew from experience that it was a bad combination for any wherhandler, much less for Ausk’s handler. She’d had the worst trouble from Damask in similar circumstances, and despite her not doubting for one instant Audren’s competency and control, Ausk was also much more volatile than Damask.
It just made Damali nervous.
Damask she kept as far from Ausk as she could as to avoid tempting fate, walking a little ahead of the humans and well off to one side. So it was Damask who first noticed Kire and Kisk, her voice coming a second before Audren jumped, saving Damali from a similar fright. Kisk.
Damask’s flat tone and disgusted hiss conveyed her opinion of Kisk fairly clearly – Kisk was the one wher that Damask had to be talked out of eating on general principal with pretty frequent regularity. Luckily, tonight Damask didn’t push her luck, instead turning away with a grumble and a mutter, Kisk make head hurt.
Damali just waved weakly at Kire around her armful of towels, preferring to stay quiet for the moment to avoid interrupting Audren.

When Ausk emerged from the shadows, Kire quite literally jumped a foot in the air. The red wher had always frightened her some and seeing her walk out of the shadows like that, even though Kisk had spotted her… Well, he had heard his mother anyway. Perhaps she needed to have a word to Kisk about not startling people he knew were probably meant to be there. Kire bowed her head quickly in something of a greeting to Audren, aware that the woman had been startled some but preferring to ignore that small hiccup.
Kisk waggled his tail excitedly but then cocked his head to the side as Ausk spoke to him. Well, shouted at him. As soon as the shouting started, Kisk dropped to the ground cowering, a small half growl-whimper escaping him. The snapped jaws had done at least something to deter the black wher but, like anything, Kisk was not overly upset for too long. As soon as his mother broke off he straightened again and waggled his tail enthusiastically, apparently convinced he was absolved of all crimes.
Kisk am guard! See MummyAusk! Tell Kire! Am learn good!! Kisk you must be respectful, be sure to speak to Ausk with proper manners. KISK AM RESPECTMANNERS!! The reply did little to assuage Kire’s concerns. “Well, Der and Fenrimere I think. Asterin may have left already… One of them may have arrived to take over.”
Meanwhile, Kisk had puffed himself up proudly when he spoke back to his mother and then sniffed something else. Raising his nose a little in the air he turned his head and spotted Damask. Two reds!? How exciting! They would surely want to play with him!! MummyAusk and DamaskBuddy! Kisk am see Damask! Damask!!! Kisk am see you!!! SEE YOU!!! Kisk be amazing investigator. He spoke very seriously to the other wher, almost nodding his head as though confirming the fact.
Remember… They are a lot larger than you… Wasn’t that the truth… Kisk, not being the largest wher out there, was about a quarter of the size of the two reds. It put Kire on edge even though she knew the two handlers to be brilliant at their jobs. Not to mention both of them had been less than peaceful at the hatching…

"Oh. Right. Yes." Audren pinned her towels precariously against her chest with a single arm; the other lifted to tug at the dark mane that haloed her head. It, predictably, did little in terms of obedience. "Der and Fenrimere. Good. They've probably switched off with Asterin, then." While Fenrimere was still new at the game, Der was not, and Audren put a healthy dose of stress-relieving trust into him. She shifted her towels back into two hands.
She was, briefly, also relieved by the fact that Ausk was burdened by straps and an excess of firewood. That is, she was relieved until she realized that the rippling mass of red-clad muscle was likely only mildly irritated by it all. There was little that could stop Ausk physically. Mentally, there was only Audren. And Audren, currently, was so close to being fatigued to the point of uselessness that a feral, wherish growl slipped through the telepathic link and out between Ausk's teeth.
Audren, at least internally, was startled by this. Kisk is your child, she said to Ausk. Be nice.
NO AUSK CHILD.
How like the terrible beast to outright reject the notion of having offspring at all.
"Sorry we scared you, Kire," Audren pulled from the back of her throat. It was almost choking; a distraught sigh. She had been equally startled. "We were just... ah, well, you can see. Towels and firewood." Parched lips were licked. "It's good patrol practice, I guess? Is Kisk adjusting well?" She would have dropped a curt 'carry on' and been done with it, but she figured she ought to talk a breather for pleasantries and relax - for all of their sake.
Ausk paced impatiently. Audren let her; it was a better way to blow off steam than by arguing with her own kin. [/blockquote]

Damask jerked backwards at Kisk’s enthusiasm, her bundles of firewood clattering together and she recoiled, hissing, Should eat Kisk. Should. Not sure stupid infect, not chance. Stupid bad. Kisk bad. Kisk loud. Damali dropped her face into her towels at Damask’s rebuttal, which followed on the end of Ausk’s rather severe denial of Kisk’s parentage.
“Sorry about her, Kire,” Damali slipped in when Audren stopped speaking, tiling her head towards her grumbling wher. Damali really did feel bad for Kisk, at this point. The black was a sweetheart – for a wher – and here two reds were trying to stomp all over his little heart.
Kisk not notice. Kisk bright. There was that term again – Damask wondered if she’d have to stop visiting with Kalenna and Kalesk if Damask was going to keep picking up… vocabulary.
Attention half on pointedly snubbing Kisk, and half on keeping herself in between her handler and the pacing Ausk, Damask hunkered down by her handler’s side when it became obvious they wouldn’t be immediately moving on – Damali resettled the towels that were slipping out of her hands.
Damali felt obliged to stay near Audren and Ausk until the other redpair made it out on patrol – or until the Alphahandler relaxed. She didn’t doubt Audren’s ability to reign in Ausk – but the woman was tired and wound tight. Damali needed to stay on hand in case something went wrong. Just in case.

”Oh yes, I’m sure they have. They’re both very talented.” Kire praised the other handlers and even idolised some of them. In fact, she had rather liked spending time with Asterin as he seemed very good at his job. Not to mention people like Der and Fenrimere were just so smart! All of them seemed to smart and it put pressure on Kire to try all the harder. She was one of those people who would try as hard as she could with often very few returns. The growl from Ausk made Kire recoil in shock, and step a little closer to Kisk, almost placing herself between him and the two reds. Suddenly, she wasn’t so sure about them anymore. Perhaps she should just go to sleep…
Far from being deterred by the growling, Kisk joined in. Here was a dead wher walking. So as the feral growl ripped forth from his mother, Kisk cocked his head to the side and did the same. It was not nearly the same growl as Ausk’s, but rather childish, young and playful. Certainly, if Kisk were to growl at an assailant it would do very little to deter them from attacking the Weyr. Although perhaps his enthusiasm would be enough to confuse them whilst the larger whers came along to attack. Kisk be growl like BigReds!! Kisk… Just talk to me for the moment… I don’t think…
She was distracted by Audren’s question but fought to reinforce some calm in Kisk. Keep him still and somewhat quiet. Although he was chatty, she somehow thought the reds didn’t appreciate the thoughts. Kire watched Kisk a moment longer before she looked back at Audren. “It’s no trouble, we should have been still keeping an eye out,” She paused a moment, considering Kisk, “Well… Yes, he is staying more focussed now, thank you Alphahandler Audren. I suppose having Asterisk here he’s trying to copy her so he tends to be a little better behaved.”
The currently waggling wher offered a rather contrary view of this as he started bouncing up and down, looking between the two reds as though trying to get them to play. Kisk am want play. They not bounce. Not like Orensk! Orensk be best fun!
