Hey, don't write yourself off yet, It's only in your head, You feel left out or looked down on, Just try your best.
Kalith had already flown, so the skies were clear and safe. Kerath stretched as W'al got ready, decking himself out in rider attire. He was feeling cheerful, because he was going to get to fly! He flexed his wings like he was a weyrling once again, longing to soar. That's why you're so good at this, Kerath; his rider laughed. You always seem to understand exactly how they're feeling. He wiggled in response to the comment, hardly bothered by it at all. He loved flying and the dragons were finally big enough to practice without hurting themselves. Hopefully none of them have been doing too much too early, though he would obviously understand why if they had. Don't encourage them; W'al told him with a playful frown, scolding the purple before he scrambled up onto his back.
Cloudchasers! Meet us on the lake shore! Thirty minutes to get up and ready; Kerath called as he swooped down to the sand. It was quite early, but there wasn't any way to get around the hour. They were expecting an evening fall and he wanted to start going over mounted firestone tossing and basic fall procedures. It was going to be a long day and he hardly had the time for it nor did his students, so they'd have to deal with getting up. Despite his understanding that it was necessary, he also knew it was an evil, so Kerath and him were lenient when it came to their student's arrival times, though the dragon did give some excited verbal bribery to encourage speed. It's going to be the most fun you've ever had! Promise!
In the end, W'al waited a few seconds longer than necessary, unquestioned by Kerath. Then he realized once again that the thirteen weyrlings and half-grown dragons in front of him were it. There was a sinking sensation. It was like the renegades all over again, but that thought gave him strength. They would survive, as they always had. He gave them a smile. "Today your dragons get to fly for the first time. All these months of work and strength training pay off. Your bond pays off." Months of work gone to waste, his mind complained, but he shoved the sad thoughts to the back. He was a hopeful person by nature and he had seen them go through worse than this before. Another loss to add to his records, but there was nothing that could be done about that fact.
"Kerath is going to give them all a demonstration. Then you're going to help them fly. You. And we're going to make it a bit of a game. A competition, if you will; W'al said with a grin. He looked like he might be pranking them, his eyes all a twinkle, but he wasn't. He was just looking forward to them having fun. He could remember the first time Kerath had glided through the air, not even halfway across the Benden bowl but still absolutely enamored. It had been a memorable occasion, a beautiful one as well, even if Kerath didn't remember it. "You'll each need to find a partner. We'll have one group of three. Little dragons should pair up with big dragons." W'al kept his voice clear and optimistic, even as he inwardly winced. The activity had been designed for fourteen.
A member of the crowd of dragonbound students, Traepsie gave a nod to herself and started to hunt for a partner when the weyrlingmaster flapped his hands at them. She wasn't good friends with any of her peers, though she didn't have any issue with any of them. Retiath didn't help much, as she only pointed out the problems in each of her siblings. She wanted the perfect partner and all of them were horribly flawed to her critical eye. I don't want Ambrith or Arboth or Sicasth or Zabelith or Recath. They will not do at all; the cyan said firmly, examining each of her brothers and sisters from where she sat. Who did that leave, Traepsie wondered to herself. Osine or Allele or Adaline or Sh'len. Any of them would do. She shifted from foot to foot, less than proactive about picking.
Try everything you can, And don't you worry what they, Tell themselves when you're away, It just takes some time.

The bribery was not enough to get Ambrith going. He grumbled to himself in his bed, stretching his forelimbs out in front of him, already in a terrible mood. I do not chase clouds, and I find that name very offensive, he informed Day'ar. Perhaps I shall not go until he agrees that I can be a Daydrummer.
"Is Daydrummer a thing that actually makes sense to you?" the weyrling asked, already knowing that it was all but randomly chosen, such was Ambrith's distaste for the name they'd been saddled with. The awareness that flight was coming soon had hung over him like a cloud for sevendays already, and Kerath's enticement only fueled Day'ar's belief that today was the day; while Ambrith lazily prepared himself (not that he had much to do), his weyrling threw himself out of bed and began rushing about. He had to dress, and brush his hair and teeth, which he did while Serah perched on his shoulder and babbled comfortably into his ear. Usually a morning jam session with his green pillie calmed him down, but today was special.
Usually, he brought her bowl to lessons with him, too. But he'd gotten lectures often enough, and this was so important, that he didn't even consider it today. Instead he checked the hall for signs of a lurking and spying Starfall before rushing down the corridor into L'xon's room. "Don't mind me," he said hurriedly, in case the blueweyrling was awake, and stowed the bowl under L'xon's bed, stuffing Serah into it. Then he went rushing down to the lake.
Ambrith followed at a more measured pace, but they still arrived with plenty of time to spare; he settled in, eyeing Kerath with grave misgivings. He respected the purple's age and position, even if he didn't like him, per se.
At last W'al launched into his speech, and Day'ar's stomach twisted. Flying. Plenty of room for horrible accident there, and the Cloudchasers had already suffered a loss; Ambrith dragged his thoughts back from the precipice of grief with a cold-seeming, If you do not focus, then we will be lost. It was easy enough, however, for his rider to tell he didn't mean it in a bad way. His idea of comfort was just a little odd.
The viridian lifted his chin in a dignified sort of way. Of course it had to be a game. It was always games, with Kerath. Just once, Ambrith would like to take these things seriously. It always got so chaotic when everyone was competing. Recath, he said, in tones that brooked no argument, as if he or Day'ar would ever choose any other pair, though he did firmly push at Sicasth with his mind. We are not a team of three, it would not be right for me to make a team of three. He definitely didn't want her getting any ideas.
Day'ar managed a faint smile for Reylia as he sidled closer; hopefully none of Ambrith's siblings would try to horn in, because the viridian was dead set against being a part of the team of three. It wasn't decent, in his view. "Flying," he allowed. "Recath will be good at that."

Oh. Oh yay! She had heard the summons, oh yes she had! It was time! Perfect time, time to play and jump and train. But trains to do what? Oh. Maybe she got to gather flowers. Surely they needed flowers. Everyone, and she meant everyone needed flowers! Oh Adamine! Adamine there has been summons from Kerath, our big purple one. He has said to meet them outside at the lake. Do you think we will swim today before the freezefrosts come? He says it will be fun! Something we will like. We must hurry! Up! Up!
Perching on the edge of her bed, Adaline sighed heavily. It had to be now of all times? She sighed heavily and put the metal she had been bending away. She was trying to teach herself to make jewelry, to make metal flowers for Tercath. A warm look was given to the green that pranced eagerly in place. Fine precious. Let's go. The green had mellowed her some. Something about the sweetness brought out her inter motherly feelings, though she couldn't help but antagonize the green at the same time. Running a finger through her short hair, she grabbed a longer shirt and switched it, making sure the sleeves covered up the scars on her arms as usual. Tercath looked around the room and crooned encouragingly, she wanted to go! Oh, after, can we see the flowers again? I want to gather some for the room, I want to try drying them again! In attempts to preserve them, before Adaline thought of the metal flowers, they had tried drying them. There were still piles of crumbled petals around the room. Adaline had yet to tell Tercath about her project. She wanted to surprise the speckled green. Climbing on the green's back, they raced to the lake.
Hello Ambrith and Retiath! Tercath trilled happily at her larger brother and her sister. She was happy to see them. She was happy to see everyone. Hello to you too Kerath! She looked around as her siblings gathered. She did notice one was missing. A brother, a black. She knew he was gone. Adaline shivered a bit as she slipped off the green's back. She did not like when Tercath remembered Sicriath. Sebolaren was... Well she worried for him. Some. Just a little bit. Trying to ignore the though, she looked at her fellow weyrlings and nodded a greeting. W'al started talking, and she focused on listening.
The moment she heard the word 'Fly' Tercath trilled eagerly and stomped on the ground. She wanted to fly Now! But she needed a partner. She needed a partner first. Oh. Hmm. Tercath looked at her siblings and tilted her head. She didn't know many. Her attention turned to Adaline. Adaline was no better, she surveyed everyone with her hands on her hips. Perhaps she shouldn't have hermited way in their weyr as much. It made activities like this rather awkward. Fine. She knew what she was going to do. Tercath, I am sure Sicasth would like to work with us. Oh! Oh yes! Sicasth! Sicasth! We should fly together! We will fly well! We can fly then find flowers! You are pink, like a pretty flower so you would like that, right? The green tilted her head questioningly. She was sure the other would say yes!
–
Lyr's morning was similar. Like Adaline, she had already been awake, this time feeding her tiny fair. There was something... curious about it all. She had been stunned to find Sequin had an egg! Lyr was truly perplexed by that development. She hadn't even felt the pink fly. Neither had Zabelith, and the weyrling was far more in tune to the firelizard's feelings than she was. It was, over all, a very strange development. But still, there were mouths to feed. Picking up another piece of dried meat, she held it out to Sequin. “Come on dear, I won't bother your egg.” Sequin didn't mind at all though. She had been quite eager to show off the small egg she guarded. Everyone was practically badgered into seeing it. Satin was annoyed by this, but Lyr was sure Satin was annoyed by much er smaller fairsister did.
My Lyr, someone calls for us. The large purple one, Kerath I believe. He says that we are to meet at the sands. Zabelith crooned happily, breaking Lyr's focus. He says it will be quite the joyous and entertaining occasion. We should hurry, as not to be late. But feed the small ones, I am sure the mother needs her strength. Zabelith practically chuckled as she stretched languidly, stepping from her couch to get a closer look. Satin chirped and landed on the pink's head, nestling between her headknobs. She was quite disgruntled.
“Ok, I am sure Satin can feed herself, right my little love?” Lyr asked, getting an agreeable trill in return. She smiled and finished feeding the pink, curled happily around her egg. Dusting off her hands, Lyr set the bowl aside and went to straighten up. Zabelith waited patiently, the splotched pink looking around. Once she had tied the laces to her boots, Lyr placed a hand on the light pink's side and the pair started walking towards the lake, taking the 'scenic route' as it were.
Salutations Retiath! How are you this fine morning? Zabelith eagerly greeted her cyan sister. And Ambrith you look good today. Your's must be taking good care of your hide, it is exquisite as usual. She tossed out compliments like folks tossed out candy at Halloween. Lyr gave a quieter, meeker 'Hello' to those near by. Oh Tercath, have you found more flowers? If you haven't I know where some lovely ones grow! The pink kept up her chatting, but Lyr just stood at her side quietly.
She listened intently as W'al spoke, quieting Zabelith as well. She didn't want the pink bothering any more than she already had. Flight. The word made her stomach flutter and clench. She was both excited and terrified. Lyr rubbed her hands together nervously, trying to calm herself. Flight would be easy. Zabelith would know what to do, it was instinct. She hoped it was. Sucking in a breath, she released it slowly. Right. Flight. Pairing up. She could do that... Right? Still, Lyr made no move to claim a partner. She would sit back quietly and pick up whom ever was left, or go with who ever asked her first. She didn't really know any of the other weyrlings that well. She didn't really want to intrude on people pairing with their friends.

Mineminemiiiine mine! C'mon! Get up! Miiiiiiiiiiiiiiine! Get up, get up!
"Rragh...oof, Sicaaasth. Just five more minutes..."
Noooo come ooon. Kerath says it's gonna be fuuuun! I don't wanna miss fuuun. Come on! It's morning! The sun's up and everything!
If Sicasth could bounce up and down R'ley's bed without accidentally killing her rider, she would. She was already bouncing at the foot of it, causing the room to quake. When the empty mug on the nightstand fell over and shattered on the floor, the boy knew it was time to get up. Not another minute later.
"Alright! Alright, I'm up. Just...give me a second, will you? Back up--let me get dressed."
He was sleeping so soundly too, having one of those strange sorts of dreams in which he was up to something of significance, and before the meaning of his sleep-quest could be revealed to him, he was awoken by a loud and cheerful alarm going off in some distant universe. R'ley rolled out from underneath his warm furs and onto the ground. It was intentional, really. A tactic he employed to help wake himself up. It didn't work though; it just hurt.
"Argh! Ow...hold on." The recovery was swift, but on his feet R'ley was every bit as useless as a newborn. He stood there, burning a second or two with a fantastic stretch, but an impatient Pink cut it short when she tried to nudge him on. The boy nearly made friends with the floor again, only this time he was alert enough to stay straightwards. "Hey! Alright, alright, I'm going. Keep your scales on."
Oh but mine he says it's going to be fun and he never says it like this so I know it's going to be super fun so we need to get there right away because last time we were late and the time before that we didn't have a partner but this time we're going to have a lotta fun and--
Oh, it just went on and on. The Pink would stop, and all the while R'ley struggled to get the proper gear on and everything. He had all his riding materials gathered up in a specific corner so he wouldn't forget to take something important again. He ended up over-prepared for the last lesson, but there was no harm in that--he didn't think. It couldn't have been.
Once he was done the two were on their way at a hare's pace, because the boy couldn't linger without being pushed ahead by his eager dragon. As they spotted clutchmates, Sicasth was energetically greeting the lot of them. Hello! Hi MasterKerath! Hi Retiath! Oh Ambrith! Hiii! Hi Tercath! Hiii Zabelith!" Meanwhile, it was a calm, peaceful time for R'ley's waking brain to finally process things.
Not.
I said hi to everyone, but I don't think we missed anything. I hope we get to start soon. Oh Kerath! Hey! Master Kerath! What are we doing today? Is it really fun?
R'ley sighed and started looking about, grinning at those he knew, visibly weary. Bitter, he supposed, was hiding away somewhere, knowing the moment the world started quaking back at the weyr that the lake was the best place to be in a hurry before he got caught up in some other shenanigans. Finally, after a bit of waiting, W'al addressed them.
Oh no... Flying. It was time. But what was he to say? Sicasth has done it before. She's actually gotten off the ground. Are you kidding? The sky-loving Pink wait for the right lesson at the right time? As soon as she started feeling lucky, she kept at it. By now, she could easily outdo her siblings who were, perhaps, just starting as they were supposed to. R'ley had to be grateful for one thing though--at least these weren't manned fights. How would he ever hope to pass them? He nearly died of a heart attack on his Search.
Flying? We're flying today?! That's easy! Sicasth can fly! She started to spread her wings out, but in this crowd she actually minded her surroundings and folded them again. I'll show you all soon. I'm the best at sky. She seemed so contented with her rhyme that she seemed to hum 'fly' and 'sky' to herself.
R'ley raised his hand awkwardly. "Um...ah..." He lowered it again. It probably wasn't even raised high enough to be noticed, but by then, people were already picking groups. He started to glance around. At first he looked to Day'ar, whom he knew most of all, but it seemed like he had already chosen his partners.
R'leymine! Tercath wants to fly with Sicasth! I bet she knows I'm the best! Can we fly with her? Pretty pleeeease?"
Tercath...ter--oh! Adaline's dragon? He sought out the girl through the crowd and spotted her fast. Yeah, he supposed that would work. She might even turn out to be a more reasonable partner for this 'game' than Day'ar anyhow. "Ah...sure! I don't see why not."
He says yes! Tercath! Tercath and hers are our partners! Sicasth announced. As for her rider, he was already accustomed to having his every action broadcast throughout the weyr. It was still pretty embarrassing though.

Kerath's call dragged Reylia to awareness before she was ready, and for a long, groggy moment she wondered what had woken her up at all. Then the words penetrated, and she sat bolt upright in the bed. Lesson time! So early? Common sense reasserted itself in the sensible girl's head. Of course so early. There was a late Fall today, and the weyrlingmaster would have other things to do.
Thread?
She sighed. The thought of Thread never failed to draw Recath's overprotective attention - not that she could blame him. It wouldn't be so long before they'd be flying it; perhaps a Turn. The black stretched, spreading his still somewhat disproportionately large wings, arching his back like a feline. No Thread right now, dearest. But we do have a lesson to get to! Quickly she scrambled to get dressed and clean her teeth, carefully directing Deanni to watch over her still-snoozing baby pillie in its bowl of water. Very firmly she pressed the green flit's mind - it was important that none of her pets got hurt while she was gone.
---
At the lakeside she listened with growing excitement. Flying! Finally, Recath would get to fly! Even the black stirred with it, stretching his wings again. He wanted to fly. Flying was new, and it would help him keep Reylia safe. Therefore, it was an incredibly good thing. Although his Reylia was... the dragonet swiveled his head to look up at her. You are excited, but you are sad. That was worrying.
Reylia leaned against her bonded's foreleg. Sebol should have been here. She closed her eyes tightly for a moment, then blinked rapidly to dismiss the moisture from her eyes. By the time Day'ar edged over to her, she had a smile ready for him and a nod for his unspoken question, slinging her arm around his shoulders. "He really wants to fly, too," she agreed to her brother's assessment of Recath's potential flight prowess. "I think you and I will do just fine together."

It's like yesterday, I didn't even know your name, Now today, You're always on my mind.
W'al slipped off Kerath's back as he examined his students' efforts to assemble into pairs. Some of them were quick about it, social butterflies or prudish snots who knew exactly who they wanted. Others of them were not so quick. Passing between his students as Kerath watched from his spot, he gave Traepsie a nudge with his shoulder. She started and Retiath hissed, not pleased with his sudden appearance. However, she said nothing and Traepsie smiled at the weyrlingmaster before heading towards N'az. Like a show dog on a chain, Retiath followed, only looking marginally more sour than she often did. W'al continued on his way, nodding at R'ley and Adaline. Something was tugging at the back of his mind, as if he had forgotten something, but he didn't know what.
Then W'al realized Kerath was no longer watching him or his students. The purple's tail flicked back and forth, his body coursing with excitement and energy. The weyrlingmaster frozen, turning slowly. It felt very much like the calm before a storm, of which he and his purple had flown through several. However, the sky was relatively clear for autumn. By all accounts, it was supposed to be a fair day. However, there was something bothering him. Kerath was watching something, head turned up towards the general direction of the sky. W'al frowned. Kerath? The purple didn't respond. What's up? Thread? It didn't feel like thread. It felt like something important. Kerath! Focus! His dragon still failed to respond, instead crouching low to the ground, muscles going tense.
It was at that moment, as the purple coiled, that all hell broke loose. Or at least something very close to hell. Waroth roared and then a moment later came crashing down into the feeding pens. W'al kicked himself as Kerath thrummed with excitement. A Queen was rising! A red Queen, W'al protested, not a proper Queen. Kerath did not care; Waroth would be a far better chase than copper Kalith, a true challenge. The purple was gone, eyes on Waroth, but W'al dug in his heels. "Barrack. Now;" he ordered the Cloudchasers, voice sharper than normal as Waroth turned her red-eyed gaze upon the class. Kerath leaped forward to put himself between the dragonets and the red, puffing out his chest with pride and pure flamboyance. Here he was! Yes, she should look at him!
You're an idiot; W'al snarled at Kerath, but the purple did not care. Could his rider not see it would be a fun chase? It would be a real adventure! And W'al could see it, egged on by his dragon as temptation grew. "We'll go over this tomorrow. Go, go, go! Stay inside! He flapped his arms at the weyrlings as Waroth took flight. He yanked at Kerath's mind, keeping him on the ground. The purple whined. He wanted to fly! All of the others were giving chase and he could fly so much better than them. Why couldn't he chase? The purple tugged back against his rider, struggling to spread his wings and fly. At long last, W'al gave, folding into his dragon. He too wanted to fly. They both loved to fly. To chase. To prove. With a trumpet of joy, Kerath pushed off and took flight . . .
You are beautiful surprise, Intoxicated every time I hear your voice, You've got me on a natural high, It's almost like I didn't even have a choice.

Day'ar relaxed once his sister arrived on the scene, and even started to get excited about flying, just a little bit. Thousands of dragons all over Pern did so every day without accident, so surely he and Ambrith would manage just fine. Especially since they were paired with Reylia and Recath, and not some more exuberant pair who might distract them; that was the benefit of being allowed to choose one's own team.
Suddenly the day was shattered by Waroth's bloodcurdling scream as she descended on the feeding pen; Day'ar instantly flinched back against Ambrith's steady leg, despite the red's significant distance from them. The vague, uneasy feeling of unwanted lust stole over him. After so long in a Weyr, he was now accustomed to the near-daily flights that took place, though he preferred to ignore them; however, the higher-ranked females gave out stronger vibes, and he hated it. Especially just a sevenday after Kalith's flight.
Yet it was worse than that. Kerath's eyes were whirling with desire, and Day'ar gave a miserable squeak. The lesson was clearly about to be cancelled, but that was not what worried him. Someday Ambrith would be an adult, and he might also choose to take flight in pursuit of entirely unlikeable females. And then what would become of his rider?
Foolish, Ambrith snapped, referring both to Kerath's flight and his rider's worries. Do you think that I would hurt you? Do you think that I would care for such a vicious little brute as that? If I give chase someday, it will be neither clouds nor violence.
He sounded so certain, but Day'ar just wanted to melt. It was obvious enough that W'al had had no desire for Kerath to risk his life chasing Waroth, yet the purple had gone regardless. Obviously the lesson would've been cancelled anyway - the skies belonged to Waroth - but still. Ambrith was just a baby. He had no way of understanding what lust was like, either for humans or for dragons; he didn't comprehend that his decision to fly would probably not be based either on his own regard for the female, or on his opinion of whether Day'ar could handle it, or even on whether it happened to be a good time.
Nudging Day'ar gently into the barracks as they'd been commanded, Ambrith said, a bit more gently, We chase nothing. We were misnamed, as I have been explaining to you this past age.
"You say that now," Day'ar muttered, with deep foreboding.

It was over as quickly as it had begun.
Osine huffed and frowned. A red's flight? Right now? The creature had cursedly bad timing. She had not liked Waroth in the first place, having duly served under the dragon's piercing gaze as a candidate, but this was pushing it. To have her sacred, prized lessons interrupted by some dragon's lust was beyond frustrating.
She had been nearing R'lin of blue Cobeath when W'al abruptly called off the much-anticipated first flight. He would have been a fine partner, responsible and hardworking like herself, but there was no need for it now. She paused in front of him. "Nevermind," she sighed, irritated, and made to head for hers and Viorth's room. Stay inside, W'al had said. Why? Osine wondered. For fear of raining ichor? Stray urges to kiss someone? She was decidedly not heading to her room because of Waroth. She told herself she was going there because she liked it better than these energetic, hyper dragons.
Her cyan Viorth shuffled along beside her. We just have to wait until tomorrow, she said, voice tinted with a slyness and excitement.
Tomorrow's a long way away, Osine grimaced.
We'll do it better tomorrow, Viorth continued. Maybe W'al will let us do it alone. I bet I can totally do it alone. All of the others are pairing up so eagerly... Who cares about pairing up?
He said we should be in pairs. We'll be in a pair.
Oh, fine, fine, but at least pick someone I can show up! Cobeath's alright; he doesn't have any imagination. Or maybe Arboth or Zabelith. Ugh, I really wanted you to fly today. Now today has no point.Hey! Hey OsineMine. Do you think I can fly upside-down?[/blockquote]
