Nemeth had been eerily quiet. Her silence was typically what S'in wished on the First Egg for. But now? For an entire day? It left the greenrider uneasy. They helped run drills for the Dusk wing without incident. They bathed and they ate without incident, although Nemeth was not hungry. But all the while Nemeth said not a word. She did not even chasten him for not-so-gently moving that weyrbrat out of the way when he made his way to the dining hall. They boy had run into him, of course, but that hardly meant that he deserved to be half-shoved. S'in had really expected to get it for that one. But the green had remained quiet. Not only quiet, but she had actually returned to her ledge and gone to sleep.
So the greenrider ate dinner in peace. He flirted with some women in peace. He worked out and even bathed in peace. He returned to his room in peace. He fell asleep in peace. For an entire day his thoughts were his own. It was wonderful. And yet, he couldn't help but feel like something was amiss. As he drifted off to the realm of slumber frustrating dreams drifted across his subconscious. At first he was trapped, locked in a room he could not escape from. Then, he was falling. He fell and he fell for a long time until the bottom of the Weyrbowl was almost in view. Then he stretched out his wings and caught himself, gliding along the bottom of the Bowl until he came upon the Herdbeast pen. He by-passed it, using his wings to climb higher and higher and higher. As he cleared the ledge of the Bowl he let out a mighty roar.
S'in awoke with a start. Nemeth was not on her ledge. It was her bugle that pierced the darkness. It was her experiences that haunted his dreams. The hour was that of only wherhandlers and their kin. The second watch had probably started only a candlemark or two ago. How like Nemeth to wait until the cover of darkness. How like her to Rise when no one was awake so she could inconvenience everyone! That was one of S'in's last waking thoughts before he seemed to fall asleep again. He was not truly asleep, no. He was awake and standing in his weyr, making his way over to the adjoining room that was Nemeth's own. But his mind was gone. He flew with her on pale green wings that glowed brilliantly even in the blackness of the new moon.
She needed no blood to weigh her down. This would not be a long Flight. With a snarl she climbed higher and higher, flying faster and faster to go farther and farther. The males would come and she would judge them swiftly and harshly. Only the best would win. This would not be a competition of congeniality or fanciful words. Only the fastest, only the strongest, only the cleverest could win her. The rest she would turn down, tossing them away like old wherry bones.

Two fragile crescents of wing extended against the black night. Not even a moon's face to guide him. His answer to the twilight's triumphant call was a long, reverberating moan that could have been sent up a glass instrument, and reflected from a field of quartz. Soft enough to gentle those sleepers roused by Nemeth's rowdy trumpet, but sonorous and smooth on its flight to the Rising green's ears. Whether or not she was receptive to dragon-song was, in Radith's opinion, a minor issue. He greeted her and the open court of midnight both. It was an exotic time for the familiar dance. Her time. He wanted to be there for her.
The trembling of his wings as the muscle in them twitched to warmth soon fell into light sweeps of his wing-arms, working out the stiffening shrinkage where old claw marks crossed his back. He could warm up as much as he liked: the scars would never let him fly as openly as before. But he fought Thread and went unbranded. He Flew every other day. He had already tested on the previous day's challengers, warm and gem-like under the sun. Now he would be slow to the chase, but wouldn't they all? His chest vibrating with a rumble of content, he tensed his long rear legs and ducked his keel out beyond the edge of his weyr.
A shaggy creature sprang on him from behind, actually running up the knots of his spine like a staircase before flinging itself upon his neck and fixing itself to his warming hide. It was mostly soft, fleshy skin, its shagginess provided by an impromptu cloak of its bedfurs.
I saw you! I felt you! it gibbered at him with its rudimentary mindspeech. You'll not make me run the length of the Bowl a third time this day, not even this sevenday! I know you! Radith tucked his head back toward the parasite, and raised the end of his tail.
Oh. A vtol.
Um'per looked over his shoulder at the long tail-flukes cracking suggestively at the air. He sank against his purple's thick flank.
I can hear you, he whimpered, only to feel the prominent hook on Radith's snout-tip nuzzling very precisely against his cheek. The chiseled, beaky point was not the tenderest of bodily implements, but Um'per grasped his lifemate's meaning and relaxed against the dragon as Radith departed their ledge. He did not think too much on the lack of straps or his present nudity- bedfur cloak rising high in the breeze of flight -till a sharp downstroke by Radith bumped him below. He made a face, and the dragon beneath him growled in sympathy. That can't be good for me, the rider said as he attemped to assume a more typical posture on the purple's back, thwarted repeatedly by various forms of turbulence.
She is getting away from me, Radith replied, issuing another of his thin solos to the heavens. Um'per nodded absently, only to find himself abruptly ejected from his seat as his counterpart tipped to one side, depositing him on S'in's weyr ledge. He rolled several feet, bedfur winding around him like a carpet tube, then unrolling him to rest at the greenrider's feet. Um'per lay on his stomach a while. Radith was long gone, chasing the evening's dream.
A head of dull blond hair arose at last, and then Um'per stood to his full six feet before the younger man.
"I was sleeping okay. I'm not getting cocky," he explained, glancing around himself, then picking up the bedfur clogged with rock dust. He gave it a halfhearted shake before replacing it over his shoulders. Radith's internal giggle alerted him to a poor choice of words, but Um'per ignored the pest. "Do you have any..." The purplerider looked around, making a vaugue squishing gesture with his right hand, before he realized they were standing on the cold stone of the dragon's half of the weyr. His mind got sluggish balancing both his own practicality and Radith's chronic disease of flirtation, but he had a lot of practice.
This greenrider on the other hand- Um'per swayed closer, just for a better look really, and reconized him. "It's you," he murmured, but S'in did not seem to be paying much attention. Um'per snorted. "Oh, this is going to be really enchanting then. Starry-eyed, inexperienced wherries..." he muttered, leaving the other's side to investigate the bedroom. He came back, purposefully planting himself directly in front of the man's gaze. He held out his hand, even teasing it under S'in's own to prompt a response. "Come on," he urged.
That his Radith was thus far alone in the fight did not matter to Um'per, not so much as the notion that if others showed up, they would glue in around this initiate and prevent movement to somewhere it would actually be comfortable to spend the night's remainder.
He really wasn't that much older than the greenrider, but his Radith had a decade and more to Nemeth's three Turns and change, and he was full of tricks. Nemeth was so bright, the purple imagined she would haved trouble seeing beyond the veil of her own luminescence. So as he followed, he flipped to one side or the other of her, and crooned and whistled notes to nonsense songs while his figure melded with the darkness. The lavender scarlines marked him still, as did the violet pinholes his eyes cut through the night.
His long wings carried him into range, and rather than dogging her every green twist, he dove purposefully beneath her in silence. Once he was sure he could maintain his station beneath her, he rolled onto his back, still quiet, took a breath, then pulsed a loud, awakening chirp at her before fanning his wings and sinking back behind her. He flipped over, but kept rolling, operating like an enormous pinwheel just to demonstrate his ability to keep speed through his antics. Speed enough to catch Nemeth. She kept ascending, but he tried after a time to go faster, to outfly her peak, without even trying to seize her on the way. The stiff-winged purple laughed as he went, happy for the chase in its own right.

Eondith had no loyalty save that to his rider. He had, perhaps, loved Laemirath, finding affections for her somewhere in his stagnant heart - but she was gone now. Thread had taken the green and he had felt nothing for it. It had also taken her rider, though, and R'fus bore the death of X'mor as yet another weight about his shoulders.
The blue dragon was comprised of a composed arch, perched calmly in his weyr. The curve was echoed in the depths of the room by R'fus' spine. The man was coming to terms with his approaching lucidity. He would not call it sobriety, for his mind would always hold the haze and sluggishness. He dreaded this acuteness: his last dose of fellis wore off and he became sharply aware of everything. Pain, movement, light. It hit him like a charging runner and felt infinitely unsafe. His brows knitted together, puzzled, and he wondered why he hadn't just topped up again. He stood with a lethargy unnatural for his age and made for his chest of drawers. He imagined the careful rows of little glass vials.
Eondith stopped him. Out of care for his health and out of love, he stopped the man from reaching for his bad medicine. Out of infectious, primal lust, however, he told the man to come to him. R'fus obliged and dragged himself onto Eondith's back. He felt the creature's warmth and strong muscle; smelled the sweet scent of his hide. The comfort Eon gave him was unmatched even by fellis and he wanted never to leave the very spot he was in. Wings extended and they ventured swiftly into the night air.
R'fus took deep breaths of the freshness; felt it fill his lungs and cool his pounding, nervous heart. He noticed how late and how dark it was, and was briefly concerned that he had not yet slept. A small, clear thought. Then he was deposited on S'in's weyrledge, and Eondith left without so much as a gentle brush of hide.
R'fus stood blinking in the dark. He put great effort into focusing; saw S'in and Um'per standing further in. The chilled air still flowed through the open mouth of the weyr and he sucked it in like a life force. His chest rose and fell with strong, precise movements. He stood tall and squared his shoulders. He felt Eondith's clean-cut lust roiling inside of him and was aware of the sensation of flying, but he held much of his own consciousness. Another small curiousness, he thought. He saw through his own eyes and not his dragon's, but whether that was out of practice or out of a diminished connection, he was unsure.
Eondith pumped his wings and lungs and flew after Nemeth. In the blackness she was as good as Pern's two moons, casting her pale-skinned glow into the night. It would not be difficult to keep his eyes fixed to her. Speed, likewise, would not be an issue. He was swift, lithe and had many Turns of precision in his movements. She was beautiful, yes, and she was quick and admirable, but he cared not for flirtations and pleasantries. He barely regarded Radith. All he wanted was her attention for this one night, once he caught her or she chose him. Then, morning would come and he would untangle himself from her beauty and leave. That would be it.
For now, though, he flew hard and he flew fast. He flew purely for his own gains, but R'fus was always in the back of his mind. Perhaps this would be for the poor human's benefit, too. Perhaps not. Eondith snorted and surged onward. [/blockquote] |

Of course, he’d already won many Flights. Before he’d even grown large enough, he’d won so many Flights simply because he was just that wonderful. He was the most attractive dragon in the Weyr and all knew that. Besides, no one would know any different and Shirath was not one to correct an individual. Whenever the purple dragon walked past he was certain that all assumed he’d won countless Flights and impressed many more dragons besides. It was this that kept him Chasing after the dragons. He’d missed out on a couple because his hide had been slightly marred from Thread and, after all, who would choose him when he was not completely at his best!?
With his slumbers ceased abruptly by the bugling call, Shirath was now watching Nemeth. He did not know her but he was certain she knew him. He was, after all, that fabulous. Shirath padded his way to the ledge and then turned to look at his rider. C’ian was still fast asleep but as lust overtook the dragon, his rider was suddenly awake and blearily looking around. Shirath did not wait long for the man before he leapt from the edge in pursuit of the green, dropping C’ian off at S’in’s Weyr before he chased the green in earnest.
Suddenly, a blue flash darted before him, causing the purple to pull up suddenly with a sharp growl. He would have the green and the blue blur would not stop him. Apart from all that, he was the best with words. No others would be able to stand his flirtatious ways.
The moon reflects off your luminescent hide beautiful Nemeth. Had you been born before the moon, you would be it!
Oh yeah, he was so darn smooth.
Hah! Sholth is here and I’ve decided that you are worthy. I will chase you!
Sholth imperiously dived past both purple dragons, corkscrewing higher into the air showing off his repaired wings. Awston had reluctantly gone to the Weyr of S’in and now that he was healed, here he was. He’d seen the Gold dragon and had decided he needed some practice. That vile Waroth had put him off the market for some time but here he was and Sholth was certain all females would be clamouring for him.
This was now his Weyr and this was his night. He would win this one. Sure, he’d been unable to chase the orange and tan earlier, the ones that now sat on the Sands but that was simply because he was preparing. He was ready now for everything and with his wings healed he would win this Flight. He was close to the other blue and called out loudly and boisterously to the green. If any had still been asleep in the Weyr, rest assured they would not be asleep much longer with the blue’s antics.

S'in was conscious enough to hear Um'per's grumpy mutterings. He hissed, unhappy with his guest's attitude. When he felt the purplerider's return, he jerked his hand out of reach and turned to glare at him. "Why should I go anywhere with you?" Nemeth had clearly taken over now. Like his green dragon, he would not be simply ordered around. Not without reason. "Give me a reason, hmm?" The greenrider stood strong, not backing down. If it came down to a fight, so be it. S'in-Nemeth could use a fight after so long of being dormant.
The next individual that caught their attention was Shirath, but for all the wrong reasons. Nemeth turned her head and growled irritably. Flattery! The ridiculous purple tried to tempt her with flattery! Your words are empty! She told him, her tone level despite the reddening of her eyes and the wrinkling of her nose. She turned on him, stretching out to give him a light scratch on the nose as she passed quickly by. It was not meant for injury, just to remind. Her gaze met Radith's before she continued on, letting her warning sink in that any purples that wished to show off could find themselves scarred for their folly.
The blue Sholth, as well, tried to show-off, but her notice of the scars on his wings were his saving grace. He had survived battle, just as she had, and had come out alive. That was worth respect. That was worth showing off. So Nemeth left him alone. He could chase after her, despite his arrogant words. Of course she was worthy! She and Hers were the worthiest in Dalibor! They had proved it by rising up to wingsecond. They had proved it by always being prepared for everything. From the strength of her wings to the cleverness of her mind, Nemeth was wholly worthy of Chasing.
Eondith went un-noted, but not unnoticed. He was silent and determined, which caught Nemeth's quiet admiration. The blue felt no need to show off and instead let his actions do the talking. That was as it should be. For the first time in the Flight she turned her sights on him and carefully watched him. Then, quickly, she picked up the pace that carried them over the clouds.
Now the green had a choice to make. The purples were lacking and they had no business in a green's Flight anyway. They were better to fly after Queen and Sub-Queens. By flying after her they were neglecting their duty. Two blues were courageous and strong, but each of them had their pros and cons. The green weighed them carefully. She would make no decisions hastily.
Suddenly, she decided to end it. This Flight had taken up enough of her time and she had things to do.
The pale green banked in front of Eondith, lingering just ahead of him. Eondith... try and catch me if you are able. She had chosen him, but only conditionally. Only if he proved himself able to catch her would she be with him for the night. She would never be his, though, just as he would never be hers. It was only for the night. There were too many things for her to do, come morning.
S'in glared at his suitors, himself making a choice. Nemeth cared little whether he bed the same suitor as her, and with his green dragon occupied he felt some semblance of himself returning to him. R'fus' dragon may have won his, but that hardly meant anything to S'in. All the greenrider knew was that his dragon was about to get some satisfaction and he had the strongest desire to do the same.
He shoved Um'per out of the way, rejecting the man for the commands he tried to give. C'ian was not even given a glance or a nod. The wingsecond made his way toward Awston and R'fus, the two blues who had impressed his green dragon before. Nemeth's choice had yet to be finalized, so he waited for them to make their move. The first past the post would win. He waited with bated breath, staring either of them down all the while daring them to make their move.

A slip of teeth replied to S'in-Nemeth's resistance. Some small portion of Um'per's brain was still planning to win over the greenrider with logic, but the rest of his body tensed at the challenge. He lowered his hand, but his eyes were now fixed on S'in's, even when the other Wingsecond looked away.
Radith's head trained after Nemeth as she began surveying her suitors and dealing out signs of judgement. Her darting back and forth between them slowed her upward progress, and the entire Flight's momentum. The older purple easily rose higher than the rest of them, settling into a hover as he examined her reactions to each male. His talons clenched on the night air as he followed the flicks of her gleaming eyes. Distantly, he felt the human part of him being discarded with a shove. His pensiveness had cost him, and it was time for a last-ditch effort.
He took the unusual step of contacting his fellow purple: Oh radiant boy, Radith hissed. Do as I do and she will see all your beauty. And stay quiet for Faranth's sake! If he interrupted Eondith's coronation on his own, he would just be an intruder. But maybe a coordinated show by both purples would entice Nemeth back to them. And despite his words to Shirath, Radith was certain the preference would be to him. He had seen what intrigued the green, and Shirath didn't have it.
Cupping his wings, he lifted himself out of his observatory station, over an imaginary hump in the wind and down, down, down! He dove with his wings wide open, turning in a slow spiral that presented his back to Nemeth just as he cut between her and the blue. His back, a blanket of purest midnight purple- except for the stringy lavender scar tissue sketched between his wingblades and down his back. Not Threadscore but the ruminations of another female, just like Sholth's. His jaws gaped as he circled heavenward again and prepared to dive once more. Ideally he and Shirath would pass within a toothlength of each other, displaying their superior agility, and in their resplendent cycles there would almost always be one blocking Eondith from his invitation to conquest.
In the dark dragonweyr, Um'per looked past the back turned to him at R'fus, and grinned.

Shirath was certain he would win this Flight. He was by far the best dragon here, look at his stripes! He was so pretty. The purple spun in the air as the green flew by him but almost stopped mid air at her words. ‘My words empty!?’ Shirath thought indignantly. His words had all kinds of meaning. They were the most meaningful words he could think of. Shirath turned his head towards the green as she flew past and then did something totally unthinkable. As Nemeth slashed out at him, Shirath recoiled dramatically pulling his serpentine neck downwards to cover the scrape on his nose. It was not deep but from the way the dragon reacted it could have been a deathly blow.
Miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinneeeeeeeee Shirath whined at C’ian, almost keening at the pain of the rejection, She scraped me. She scratched my beautiful nose. She does not want me. Oh this is the most devastating thing ever! I am so beautiful but look how she flies away from me.
In mid air, Shirath sulked. Almost stopped flying in his sulking behaviour. He barely even noticed the words of the other purple, looking unhappily at him but did brighten at the words. He was pretty radiant but too bad that Nemeth would never know his radiance. Radith would. Maybe… Perhaps Radith was right and then maybe he could even show the other purple how wonderful he was! Maybe Radith would want him.
Why of course Radith. I will follow you for you are radiant. How fitting your name…
Shirath followed Radith, performing an arc just as the purple was doing, trying to remain quiet.
C’ian was pulled from the lust of the Flight by the emotions he felt from Shirath. No longer was the purple being influenced by the green for he could not deal with the pain. The rider looked blearily around the Weyr and recoiled when he realised where he was and whom he was with.
It’s just a flesh wound.
Yet he no longer wanted to be here. No way did he want to be in this room… C’ian jumped and moved to leave the room, shuffling for the door and then running out into the corridor before he could be attacked by the green’s rider.
As the purples showed off, Sholth huffed and rolled his head a tad in embarrassment for the pair. Obviously they had to rely on such petty actions to gain the attention of the green. He needed no such thing for if she figured out his beauty she would know it. If not then it was her loss. Sholth noticed that she seemed to take a preference for the other blue and huffed again in displeasure. The blue dragon flew a sharp arc, nearby the blue and green wondering whether she would choose Eondith.
Yes, it seemed she would. Sholth growled softly but did not make a move to stop the green in her choice. He didn’t need this for he could win any queen flight if he so desired it. The other two had just been a momentary set back. Still, he could feel Awston wavering and felt her emotions returning to him.
In the weyr, Awston seemed a little dazed but also didn’t make a move towards S’in. She had been raised to hold herself with a polite air, manners having always been very important to the female. She felt it would be the height of rudeness to presume S’in wished to choose her. Now that some of her own mind had been returned, she was in more capacity to make this judgement.
I wash my wings of this. I shall return. Do as you will my dear Awston. I will see you back there.
Yet the rider did not move either, she would remain for the moment at least. Simply put, she would never presume. Some of the lust lingered still and as much as the woman was torn, it also seemed rude to leave so soon…

Nemeth growled, displeased that her chosen suitor had not responded to her call. Well, then obviously he wasn't worthy of her! Her red eyes swirled faster as she watched the purple Radith enact his maneuver to separate herself from the dusty blue. As much as his actions irritated her, they no more irritated her than Eondith's silence. At least Radith's actions were admirable. He saw what he wanted and went for it. Shirath was only a follower. Radith was the one she had misjudged. He was clearly a much better leader than she had originally surmised. It was a rare thing indeed to be able to change the calculating green's mind, but through his actions Radith had done so.. and, of course, his attractive battle scars certainly helped.
Shirath was ignored like a fly buzzing around a herdbeast, but carefully Nemeth calculated Radith's cycling trajectory. A pattern drummed a beat in her mind as she prepared to enact her plan at precisely the right moment. Climbing up... diving down... climbing up... diving down... climbing up...
Just as Radith was about to pass her by again, Nemeth rolled to the side and caught him mid-dive. With a pull of one more sweep of her wings and the momentum of her body she acted to tear him from his path in the sky to bring him on one that she had chosen. She said nothing to him. Nothing needed to be said. This was not a time for empty words and promises. Nemeth promised nothing. Right now she craved him but by the time morning came her cravings would have changed. There was no love in this. It was purely physical. It was just business.
S'in felt Nemeth's hold releasing his mind ever so slightly from their bond and he groaned under his breath at the incredible headache he had--a headache that could be swayed by one thing and one thing only. Radith's rider was too far away and for a second he considered the two riders closest to him. Sholth had left Nemeth, but Awston remained, and as the greenrider's eyes fell on her feminine form he grabbed her by the wrist and pulled her quickly close to him. To between with Nemeth and Sholth and dragon stupidity. He'd bed who he wanted to bed, thank you very much. Nemeth was not in a state to lecture him otherwise as his lips hungrily sought after the female bluerider's. He pulled her toward his bed chambers, giving one final glare to the others that remained.
"Leave." The word was spat with a draconic growl just before he slammed the door shut. |

Although her dragon had departed, Awston remained. Sholth would have nothing with a dragon who had already made her mind up. More to the point, he would not be deemed second best. This Awston knew. Although her blue recognised that Nemeth had now chosen another as a second after the first choice of Eondith, he did not feel at all slighted. He felt he had already been slighted and therefore would have nothing more to do with the green. For the moment anyway. Yet perhaps more out of desire Awston remained. This S’in was a Wingsecond and undoubtedly a good man.
As Sholth heard the call from Nemeth and Radith, he rolled his head in frustration. How could she not have seen his wonder? Never could that green ever come to know him. He was a Queen chaser. True that he had not yet won a queen flight but that did not matter to the blue. Lies could most easily be told to remedy that situation. As the blue banked down to the bowl, he felt Awston’s own lust flow through him.
Well, congratulations Awston my dear. We do not know this man well at all and his dragon has rejected me yet still you remain in his Weyr.
As S’in grabbed her waist, Awston smiled at the rider and turned triumphantly to look at the others. Although Sholth had not won the Flight she had won something here and now. To be noticed by the rider was something that was just as satisfying as if her dragon had won the flight. Still his lust lingered. His attitude was changing though and somewhere deep in her mind, Awston knew that Sholth would not let her hear the end of this for at least a couple of days. For the moment, though, the bluerider did not care as she gladly allowed herself to be pulled to S’in’s chambers.
