Wenth! Ablath! It's time to go!
Aside from his very specific missives to the two lady-dragons, Halventh ran uncharacteristically quiet as he perched on the eastern Rim. He bunched up his legs and kicked off into the cool pre-dawn air, gliding down and taking a new post on one of the southern cliffs overhanging the Weyr entrance. His head craned around in the dark to ensure no one aside from his specially selected guests was creeping up.
Lexy rode between his neckridges instead of L'xon. Halventh had to borrow her back from Weslieth, just for a few hours, and without Weslieth's knowledge. He was wearing none of his usual tack. Keeping L'xon from figuring out where he was headed had been very trying, but so long as his rider stayed asleep this morning, it would be worth it. He hopped off the cliff as soon as the other two dragons arrived, announcing very sneakily to the watch: Me, Wenth and Ablath are going for a swim in the ocean! We're not doing anything else!
Halventh circled, and considered his audience, or at least half of it. We're going to get pillies now, he clarified to Wenth, facets spinning green. Don't wake anyone up! He peeled away from the Weyr and went gliding down the western shore.
Their destination was the river delta. Lexy said the eggs will be here! the blue said as he landed in the shallows. To his surprise and delight, a few pillies shot out of the water around his feet and dove away like rock-shaped dolphins. He hop-charged after them a ways, then remembered why he was here. Picking Lexy off his neck, he held her out above the water. Find the pillies, Lexy! Halventh commanded. The gray's legs curled a bit inward, indicating herself. Halventh blinked. Find the pillie eggs!
Lexy was only just starting to move again after having been hoisted from her relatively safe accommodations, but the slightest list in her antennae caused Halventh to trot in that direction. It took him a few minutes of wandering in circles around the delta to decide that maybe letting Lexy guide them herself would be better. He set her down in the sand on one side.
The gray laid still for a few moments, and then her antennae twitched violently toward the water a few inches away. She managed the incredible feat of crawling onto all-eights and standing tall, then began to hop up and down frantically at Halventh.
Drmdrmdrmdrmdrmdrm! she pleaded. Halventh bugled in triumph.
Look! She must be showing us where the eggs are! he trumpeted, almost too loud. But his joyful magnification of volume broke off when two enormous pillies, an amber and a brass, lunged out of the water together and ran over the hopping gray. Lots of tiny pillies clutching to their shells gave the wild insects significant extra bulk, which they used to take turns stamping Lexy into the sand. While they defended the clutching grounds, their remaining babies all rushed out of the muck and began latching onto them or onto aunts and uncles floating in the shallows nearby.
Halventh watched the entire scenario play out, sitting down after the first couple minutes. At last the mated pair of wilds sauntered back into the water, laden with offspring, leaving Lexy flatter than ever and partially buried in a dump of tiny glittering eggcases. Halventh looked around the stilled turbulence of the sands. They're all gone...? he asked morosely of no one in particular.
......d..............rm...

Ooooooh! Thank you, Halventh! I will see you soon, okay? Ablath replied, her excitement palpable in her mindvoice. She trilled happily from her ledge, but paused as she realized that she didn't want to wake up A'bar. Cautiously, she tip-toed with elephant-like grace to peek into the doorway between her room and A'bar's. Her mind pressed gently against her rider's, feeling whether or not he was still awake. The greenrider grunted in his sleep, rolled over into a cocoon of sheets, but otherwise made no reply. Satisfied, Ablath wiggled rather proudly and then scooted back to her ledge and glided through the air over the bowl. Almost immediately purple Shobie appeared before her, chittering at her as if to say "How YOU doing?" The green snorted and shook her head at him. Nooo! Purplething! You cannot come, okay? It's a SECRET. I'll tell you later. Don't tell A'bar, or he might ruin the fun!
Shobie, seemingly indifferent to the words the green spouted at him, just did a barrel roll in the air and chirped again. Ablath giggled mentally. Fine! Since you're so very talented, you can come! Just be nice to our host, Halventh, or I shall have to sit you in a corner! That taken care of, the green trilled into the morning and pumped her wings to take her higher than the rim. She joined Halventh's side and winked at him, then waited patiently as he explained to the watchdragon where they were going. How clever of Halventh! He was so young, and yet he was so very, very smart! She would have to tell HerA'bar later of how clever the young Halventh was and how he was so brilliant and... and smart! As soon as they were clear of the watchdragon the green warbled happily again and flew a little further ahead to do a spiral in the air. How fun this was! It could only be more fun if HerA'bar was here! She placated herself with the knowledge of how happy her favorite man would be when she brought home a pillie and a million new stories to tell... and that now Shobie had taken off despite her invitation for him to join. Good. Now she wouldn't have to keep an eye on him.
OH. Lexy? Who is Lexy? Is this Lexy? She is very interesting! I think I like her. Do you like me, Lexy? Oh, did I tell you the story of the pillie hatching MyA'bar and I went to, Halventh? It was so neat! A pillie Lexy's size tried to invade the nest, though! It was very scary. I thought that maybe the poor little pillie babies would be done for! But I was very, very happy when they were safe. That really big pillie is a good mother! A'bar tells me that I had a mother like that when I was hatched. He says that Kalith is my mother. Isn't that odd, Halventh? Do you know who your mother is, Halventh? For the duration of Halventh's prodding Lexy into finding the next Ablath rattled on everything that happened to come to her mind.
Only Halventh's affirmative that the gray had found the eggs caused Ablath to pay attention again and let loose a warble. Oh! This is so exciting, Halventh! We shall be pillie parents now! That means that I will be a pillie mother. You can be the pillie father, Halventh. But oh! Ooooh! What are they doing? Leave her alone, pillie babies! She's much too nice for you to treat her like that! Ablath squeaked in surprise as the pillies ran over the poor Lexy that had done so well to show them where to go and she almost wanted to go help the little dear. Halventh made no move, though, so Ablath stayed back looking a mixture of mortified and confused. Maybe this was common during pillie hatchings? However, as soon as they all ran away she sighed with despair.
Oh, Halventh. I'm sorry. Maybe they'll come back? The green cooed at him and moved to snuggle next to him, rubbing her head against his neck. I had fun anyway, Halventh. It was quite exciting! But they'll come back, of this I'm sure. Who could stay away from such lovely dragons as we three? She would have continued her optimistic speech, only suddenly she remembered that the poor Lexy was still flattened into the sand. Oooh, Lexy! Are you okay, little one? Thank you for standing up so valiantly for us! It was very brave of you! She moved from Halventh to go sniff at the living gray pancake.

Wenth, already awake, was watching the sky, and any clouds of course, turn colors as the sun prepared to rise when Halventh's call came. Good almost morning, Halventh...[/i] Aylina was sleeping, having good dreams this time, and Slugabed was still curled up in his bowl sleeping with the occasional burble of bubbles. Her large eyes shimmered in the pre-dawn gloom as she peered back into her weyr, checking to make sure her cloud haired rider wasn't going to wake up any time soon. A peek at her rider's mind confirmed the dream; something to do with lots of blurry colors and a chair.
HerPretty would not be waking any time soon, which meant she could go play with Halventh and Ablath.
The thought to bring Slug with her was tempting, but it was going to be a surprise, and she couldn't bring him if it was a surprise, no... she couldn't. Stretching carefully on her ledge first, Wenth's wings open and she leaped, beating her wings to get some leverage and hummed softly to herself as she caught a nice current and headed for Halventh. Her eyes spun blue, as usual, as she answered Halventh. Yes... surprise pillies for everyone... everyone will be sleeping, the sun is not up.[/i]
Except for the whers, and she looked for them too. Kisk was not out to play, or she would have said hello to him. She was on the look out for other whers too, because bad whers had attacked before, and she didn't want to get chewed on. That would make Aylina very sad, and she did not like a sad Aylina, no... she didn't. Good almost morning Ablath...[/i] AylinaPretty and Ablath's hadn't met before, no, but it was good manners to say good morning, even if it wasn't almost but not quite morning.
She knew this place, the river place. This was a nice place, pillies would like it too. She knew she would if she was a pillie. Wenth angled herself, going deeper than Halventh had so she could... do something. She wasn't sure what she would be good at doing, but maybe she could look from there. She was good at looking. Her head dipped beneath the water, outer lids blinking to adjust to the water's blurry world. Pillies rushed around, and then poor Lexy was squished into the sand.
Well, that wasn't very nice, no... it wasn't.
Wenth's head popped out of the water as she lumbered forward, stopping to nuzzle Halventh in a comforting manner. There are more pillies out there, Halventh, yes... there are. These were not to be our pillies, they did not want to be friends with Lexy or us, no... they didn't...[/i] She stretched her neck out, snout within Lexy's reach if she so chose. It is okay, Lexy, you tried... yes, you did... They didn't want to be our friends, no, no they didn't... we will try again, yes... we will... do you need help up...?[/i]
After all, if she were a pillie, she would have all sorts of nests around this area, yes... she was. There was surely at least one or two more pillie nests in the area.

A gelatinous eggcase popped, and the warm delta sand flooded the occupant. He had a few strings of hatching fluid still wrapped around his legs, but if he wanted to survive he had to get to the surface and find water- fast! His shell wasn't completely hard yet, so he squeezed out the minuscule hole in the egg one segment at a time, closing his eyelids against the bite of the sand grains. From there he thrashed all eight of his legs, "swimming" up a few inches of sand to poke out of dune. He flinched one eye a few times to get the lids back open and peered around. He blinked the other eye open shortly, and newborn sunlight filled him. The air blew sweet and salty over his segmented muzzle, and the beginning of the water was only a wiggle away. He hoisted himself out of the ground, took a step forward, then tumbled the rest of the way to the foamy shallows. He raised his head, straining to see the end of the big blue. But there was no end. Deep, he observed. His voice ran very low for pillie, and especially for a baby. Beep-beep! someone else answered. That voice was lighter, moderate even, but the pronunciation was on the quick side. The ocean's observer shuffled around to see a brown brother with his head and two pairs of legs sticking out of the dune. As he watched, a third latecomer wiggled her green snout into view. She shifted around and flexed her flowery jaws, but did not seem able to get anymore of herself out. The first pillie, a striped blue, began crawling up to help her. The brown squeaked out of his own hatching tomb and immediately zipped into a two-toned ball of shell and sticky goo. He rolled out toward the water, splashed a curve through the shadows, then hopped back into the sand and wrote a perfect circle before jumping clear and uncurling. He looked expectantly toward the green. The blue had hauled half of her from the sand, and stopped to give her a chance to introduce herself. She looked from him to the brown, then waved her legs up as she took a breath. ...........k!She collapsed back against the sand, panting with effort. The blue started digging the rest of her out, with the brown rolling a return to them as back-up. But to the blue's surprise, the green stopped panting and fussed at his legs with her own, switching her antennae against his head. He flopped back, shocked, and she added insult to injury by accidentally catching him right on the nose with another wild bat of her leg. Grumbling, he began slapping his own little legs out and the two of them pattered at each other's toeless feet with grave intent. BEE-BEEP!The brown, rolling (too fast) up the hill, smashed into the other two hatchlings and his momentum carried all three away, further inland, and into the company of vast shadows. *** Halventh bobbed his head at the other dragons' assurances, standing up...only to find them both putting their backs to him and attending Lexy. He arched his neck and puffed at them, but they didn't turn around. Halventh snapped his tail from side-to-side, then jumped forward to thrust his head between theirs. This proved harder than expected, especially when Wenth had not an inch of give in her desaturated brown hide. He ended up wedged between opposing ribcages, and had to worm the rest of the way through. When his head finally appeared between Wenth's and Ablath's, Lexy raised a crinkled feeler toward him. Then a ball of hissing, fighting pillie babies rolled in between the blue's front paws and smacked into the gray's head. The impact unstuck the three of them, and they all tumbled to a stop before the dragons, on their backs and still with shock. The blue was gazing up at Halventh's inquiring nose, the green was semi-curled before Ablath, and the brown was sprawled in front of Wenth. Lexy was behind the whole group, facedown in the sand. Halventh thought about the implications of having very tiny pillies just dumped in front of them, then cracked his long jaws in a draconic grin. The blue pillie looked through the rows and rows of fangs for an end to the beast's maw. But there was no end. Deep, he commented. His brown brother twitched at the sound, barrel-rolling onto his side and then upright. It was only then that he caught sight of Wenth. Bee-beep... he added in quiet awe. Both male pillies glanced over at their sister for her opinion. She was still shaking some sand off her head, but soon noticed them looking. She eyed Ablath critically for a moment, then reared up on her hindlegs to give her lungs more room to expand as she took a breath. ...........k!Only the exceptional hearing of the dragons could make anything out of that thin, pathetic wheeze. Halventh tilted his head at the green, then reached out and began clawing the blue pillie toward himself. The baby mumbled in low uncertainty as he was repeatedly buried in sand, then exposed again. We could probably find other nests, Halventh said. But it would be easier to just take these! He scooped the blue up on the point of his talon and set it up on his shoulder. The blue began trundling up his neck from there. Halventh squinted back at the other two pillies, forked tongue running out over his lips as he considered each. Snorting to himself, he picked up the green, dropping her in front of Wenth. The brown took a few tries to grab, but eventually Halventh dropped him in front of Ablath. Deep! the blue pillie reported as he looked across the island from his new perch on Halventh's headknob. The brown trembled in excitement, then shimmied himself up Ablath's arm to her shoulder. Beep-beep! he agreed. The green pillie was far more skeptical than either of her brothers, but she inched up to Wenth anyway. She touched one antenna to the tan's claw. Oh! Oh-oh! She could feel something right about this monster, much more so than the other two. She sprang forth and wrapped her legs around the chosen claw. She took a breath, and her voice rang out high and pure: Keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep!Halventh's Blue - 3610dc Deep. Meditative, empathetic, a little touchy.
Ablath's Brown - 8b5f1a Beep! EXCITED, impulsive, OVERLY HELPFUL.
Wenth's Green - 789a00 Keep~ Willful (some dictionaries consider this a synonym for "bossy"), independent, even-if-these-pipes-are-broken-there's-no-way-I'm-playing-back-up!
Note: You do need to have your dragon bring the pillie back to their person asap. : )

Wenth snorted a bit, lifting her head enough that she could look at Halventh as he smooshed in between herself and Ablath. Halventh wanted to be in the middle, yes, he did... why, she did not know, but maybe he was cold. So she would make sure Halventh wasn't cold, yes, she would. She let him squeeze in and leaned a little closer, happy to share body heat with him. Aylina liked to do the same thing when it was cold too, and Wenth was okay with that too, yes, she was.
A slow, methodical blink was given in response to a tangle of pillie babies rolling right on top of Lexy. Well, she had said that there would be other pillies... yes... she had said that... She liked them all, the blue looked like Halventh if he was a pillie, but he was not a pillie and thus could not be Halventh, because Halventh was a dragon, not a pillie; yes... he was. The green would look nice with Ablath, because she was green too, yes... she was, and a nice green. She liked nice greens, yes, she did... and the brown seemed patchy. That was okay too, yes... because she was kind of patchy too.
Soon, all of them had a baby pillie, each one going to their respective dragon-owners who would bond them to their humans. Wenth looked to Ablath, and then to Halventh. What will you name your pillies...? I think this one says her name is Keeper, yes... she does... she will make a good companion for Slugabed, yes... she will. [/i] She craned her neck to poor squished Lexy. Lexy is a good pillie, yes... she is... she helped us find our pillies, yes... she did... she has a new friend now...[/i]
Then all conversation was said, done with- or repeated idly, in Wenth's case, Wenth found herself carefully toting her new friend, and Slug's and AylinaPretty's, back home to her home.
AylinaPretty was still asleep, nonethewiser, and with a toothy dragon smile that might have been her way of trying to imitate Aylina's own grin whenever something pleased her greatly, Wenth gently rested her great big head on top of the pile of furs half-kicked off a slender, tanned body. This is AylinaPretty, you should go say hello... yes... you should... and then I will take you to meet your other new friend, yes... I will... he is a pillie like you, yes... he is...[/i]
Slug burbled from his pot, lazily poking his feelers out and raising himself onto the lip of the significantly heavy thing made for him to sleep in. There was a tiny green thing, female, and small like he'd once been. Small pillie? He sighed a great pillie-sigh, creaking his way over to the bed and extending more effort than really was necessary, in his opinion, to get on top of it and crawl next to the human who sometimes carried him around, and usually helped him get food like she should. Ehh... ehh... ehh e...h...?[/color] He inquired, wondering what in the name of all delicious fish heads she was doing skuttling up to his human servant's face like that.
Hmm, no, this certainly wouldn't do. Absolutely wretched. She buzzed unhappily to herself, crawling back down the woman's cheek and settled herself point on the woman's chest and secured herself, and thus the bond needed, there. Her buzzes turned harsher, more demanding as she waited for the person to rise. Up! It was time to be awake, she should have been at it ages ago.
Aylina's eyes opened, blinking away the last visages of sleep as impressions of hunger hit her. But it was faint, buzzy sounding, tinged with curiosity and confusion, along with Wenth's oddly satisfied mind drifting through their link. Satisfied? Brown eyes caught a splash of color at the same time she caught a gigantic shiny carapaced head with a white marking on its head and beady eyes staring at her chest too.
Her first thought was Slug was getting ready to try and eat her. Her second, most accurate though, was that he was confused as to why there was a small green striped pillie on her chest. Wait. There was a tiny green striped pillie who'd made herself at home dead center on her chest.
Staring at her with impatient feelers wiggling at her, the pillie announced herself at the same time Wenth spoke to Aylina. Keeep![/i] Slow humans, honestly!
Her name is Keeper. She says keep, or sounds like it... yes... it does... and it's a her, yes... she is... so Keeper. She is going to be Slugabed's friend, yes... she is... so he does not get lonely.[/i]
There was an odd collection of noises that followed, and Wenth cocked her head to one side as most of them came from Aylina, punctuated by the sounds from Keeper and a deeper voice from Slugabed. Those were strange noises, yes... they were.... but maybe Aylina was speaking pillie and that was why it sounded strange.
Halventh and Ablath would know, but she would let them have time with their new pillie and introducing them to their people too. It was important... at least, she thought it was important... yes... maybe...

Oh! Ablath remarked in surprise as Halventh wiggled his way between herself and Wenth. I'm sorry, Halventh. I didn't mean to exclude you! You are very much welcomed to tend to Lexy. She gave one last look at the poor, grey pillie and then backed off a bit so that Halventh could tend to her. It seemed Lexy wanted Halventh, after all. It should be that way. Lexy was part of Halventh's family and family should take care of other family. So she waited patiently, only noting something was odd when one of the three pillie siblings came to a rolling stop in front of her. She inspected the green with interest, then warbled happily. Loooooook! Halveeeeenth! They came back!
Oh, this was so exciting! Ablath could hardly keep still, although she remained so to keep from stepping on the little dears. They were so tiny! Were all things that tiny when they were hatched? She personally couldn't remember being so tiny as that! When Halventh said they could take them she was filled with draconic glee. Oh, yes, Halventh! These will do nicely, I think. I like them already. They're all so happy and wonderful and delightful and friendly and adorable and lovely! The brown was set in front of her and Ablath wiggled with excitement. She was positively trembling with excitement!
Hello, little one! I am your pillie mommy. You are my pillie son. Together we will be a pillie family. Doesn't that sound nice? Ablath greeted her new pillie friend, twitching a bit as the tiny bug crawled up her arm. What shall we name you, little buggy? Oh! Do you know your name? I knew my name when I was born, or so MyA'bar told me.
Beepbeep! The brown responded, smelling Ablath's hide with his feelers. He looked up at her, jumped three times on her back, then shouted again, BEEP!
Your name is Beep, then? Well, you say it an awful lot... It must be your name! Ablath nodded and it was agreed. Beep had named himself and he would be Beep from then on. She looked at Wenth and purred, snuggling up against the tan. He says his name is Beep! And yours says her name is Keeper! Oh, how lovely! And she's a green. Greens are awesome, you know. Tans and browns are equally awesome. After a pause she looked at Halventh, then bugled happily and plowed into him with a glomp of a cuddle, Blues are absolutely WONDERFUL, too! Aren't you, Halventh? Thank you so much for inviting me! She licked his cheek and then moved away to get room to take off. I'll see you both later, I'm sure. We're pillie parents together! We'll have to have playdates and things that good pillie parents should do! But now I must go to MyA'bar and introduce him to our new friend! Farewell, friends!
