Igen did not have as much water as this place. Something that Ezzia had noticed when she first arrived. Of course, there was water but it certainly wasn't as plentiful as it happened to be here. Requezzia still wasn't certain what to think about that as she made her way down to the lake with Bessienth prancing along before her. For a while, the Weyrling stared at the jumping cyan. Back legs kicked out comically but with a dancing grace Ezzia could not ignore. It was rather beautiful to watch but certainly strange as the dragonet twisted and turned while she ran. It was in these moments when Requezzia truly felt close to her dragonet but most of the time she just felt nothing. There was no love that she received from the dragon as she saw with others but she also didn't know how she felt.
She had watched other Weyrlings and seen the love between them from Impression but being with Bessienth made her wonder... Had she ever loved anyone ever? The thought left her head as soon as it had entered as Bessienth splashed her way delicately into the water. Requezzia had agreed to bathe the dragon in the water but she would not remove her own garments as she had seen others do. Beauty came from what could not be seen not from what could in her opinion and clothes left much to the imagination.
That did not, however, stop her wearing clothes that would look good in the water. Bessienth paddled her way around not really waiting for her rider to bathe her, happy to just swim around on her own. Ezzia waded into the water and watched the cyan for a while before looking around for someone she might be able to speak with.
Look. The cyan's eyes had fallen on a dragon off in the distance, watching with eyes of swirling interest and awe. She still had not seen many of the adult dragons before.

The summer weather did wonders for E'rin. There were still times when he became caught up in mourning; when the winds blew quiet in the darkening evenings and he found himself missing the mangy scruff of Rats' head on his lap or the white noise of F'lan and X'ni's low voices. He missed his fathers dearly. When they had been alive, he had taken his privilege for granted. X'ni irritated him on most days. But he owed Jarith to the both of them, and his life at the Weyr as a whole. It had been nearly half a Turn since they had passed, though - some of the first to perish in the plague.
The sunny days spent on the lake, though, were healing. Sometimes he would lay on the shore with A'lan and talk. Sometimes it would be about the consistency of the past Threadfall; sometimes about the oddities of his pillies or the new trinkets Jarith had dragged back to their weyr. On the windier, cloudier days he would get to talking about how strange and empty he felt - like he wouldn't be able to find anyone ever again. None of the girls interested him. He didn't stay much at dinners. Even whispers of an impending Gather didn't excite him, and above all else, he felt older than he should. He was only sixteen, but he had been a dragonrider for more than five Turns now and a great deal of the things he loved had passed. But when it was sunny, he felt good.
One such day, Rukbat burned bright and happy in the clear sky. He took himself and his menagerie out to the lake. His pillies Murmle, Levi II, Mitzi, and Merps trundled past him in anticipation of the cool water, and his green firelizard Lana hovered around his head and arms as he tried to tug his shirt off. Brown Levi hung back on a rock to sun himself, disinterested in the rest of the family, as per usual. But most exuberant of all was Jarith, who anxiously pranced about while E'rin stripped to his underpants. She snuffled at his blonde hair; squeaked at him; sang him songs about how excited she was to swim.
He smiled and caught her shining muzzle in his arms. She made him so happy.
SWIMMING, E'RINLOVE, she squawked at him, wriggling free of his embrace only to headbutt him from behind to rush him into the water. There was a great deal of splashing and laughing and trumpeting. The four pillies floated like a raft of placid islands, talking amongst themselves in a background drabble that comfortable filled the base layer of E'rin's head. Lana, floating high above on the cool wind that curled off the lake, spotted a new pair further off.
Being the curious little green that she was, she zipped a little closer, her bright stripes flashing in the sun. She whistled to Requezzia and Bessienth, and drew even nearer, but then suddenly backwinged and changed her mind. Oh, they frightened her a little! What was she supposed to do? Would they pet her, though? She liked being petted. Nervously, a weak and distressed creel issued from her little green maw, and E'rin looked over to see what was the matter.
"Oh, Lana!" the boy scoffed, but he was grinning. "She's scared of everyone!" he called to Requezzia. Then, out of nowhere came Jarith's glittering paw, and she dunked him under the water and loosed a triumphant bugle. [/blockquote]

For a while, Bessienth was content to paddle around on her own, the small dragon watching what was going on but her attention kept going back to the white dragon that had appeared at the lake. Requezzia had spotted the white and although it held her interest, she was not as fascinated as her dragon... Perhaps it was more of a feigned disinterest rather than a true disinterest. The cyan's wings were floating lightly on the water and feet kicking out underneath her but there was a lack of effort there that Ezzia marvelled at. She didn't really know how to swim properly. Sure she knew how to survive but beyond that... She did not wish to endanger herself.
Bessienth watched as a tiny green dragon tried to fly over to them. She knew it for a firelizard but preferred to think of it as a smaller dragon. That way she was bigger than at least one dragon here. The cyan raised her head, ready to give the creature a landing place but then lowered it again as the green backwinged and tried to run away. A voice made her look over as a man-human called out saying that this Lana was scared.
Bessienth swam a little closer and raised her head out of the water again crooning a quiet, soft encouragement. I will not harm you. Still, she did not want to scare her away and instead she started swimming over to the boy that had spoken who was now under the water. Bessienth lifted her own paw out of the water and examined it, then looking back at her bonded who was wading her way over to join them. Then the cyan held it up to the large white with a soft call.
Ezzia followed her dragon but did not walk any deeper into the water. Instead, she stood a little further away ensuring that she would not get into a situation where she would be struggling to keep her head above the water. "Oh no trouble. I am Requezzia and that is Bessienth," Ezzia surveyed the boy for a moment. She was a little older than him but she suspected not by much. Interesting. "Why what a lovely dragon you have." If there was one thing she was good at it was ensuring that her false sweetness sounded utterly sincere. Bessienth was far prettier than this dragon.

Bessienth's voice did little to soothe Lana. Rather, it sent a terrible shiver down the antsy flit's spine, and she squawked pitifully and wheeled in the air above her bonded. E'rin surfaced again, spluttering, and wiped the water out of his eyes. "You dastardly dragon," he beamed, aiming a dedicated splash at her face. She snorted the water off in a spray of gleaming droplets.
Around her new company, Jarith ceased her fooling around and straightened up. She curved her neck just so; lowered her eyelids slightly so she looked more mysterious than mischievous. E'rin propped himself up by slinging an arm over her shoulder. One of the good things about having a white was that she wasn't entirely too big. Each bit of her was reachable.
"Yeah, nah, don't worry about Lana," he smiled at Requezzia. He flipped his wet hair out of his face and Lana chittered at him from above. His mellower pillies had given the gathering a comfortable berth, but Mitzi was feeling sociable and fluttered her little legs beneath her to swim nearer.
Then came the compliment, though. Enough people had slipped in comments about Jarith's bizarre, sparkling hide over the Turns that E'rin was entirely used to it and its effects. It used to embarrass him on premise (a boy with a sparkling girl dragon!), but now it made him grin in good humour. "Really, you don't have to feel obligated to compliment her. Her ego's big enough already!"
And, as if on cue, She called me lovely! Aha! Yes, yes, that's because I am, E'rinlove. I most definitely am. See how the sun catches my glitterssss! So many glitters! Ahhh, I am beautiful.
You're impossible, he told her.
Impossibly beautiful! Ohhh, just ask Irith. Lovely pretty Irith! My Irith! Just ask him, oh, he'll tell you, alright. He'll tell you 'oh, Jarithpretty is so impossibly beautiful, E'rinlovesilly.' Yes he will!
E'rin affectionately tuned out her banter.
"So how's weyrlinghood?" he smiled to her. She seemed older than him, but her dragon was brand new. He'd watched the hatching, quite modestly but still interested. Bessienth's footwork had been a highlight among the gore. "I remember seeing you Impress." And shells! Bessienth was so small. Jarith had been that small, once - and even smaller before that.
Lana flew lower down now, and disappeared behind Jarith's bright white body where she plunked into the water to float in secrecy. Oh, but she wanted pettings! Distressed, she paddled her way around front and clambered onto the back of Mitzi's hard pink shell and silently inserted herself into the conversation. [/blockquote]

The cyan watched as the firelizard ran away from her. Just like all the people on the sands except a couple. Still, she could have chosen one of them and then she wouldn't have been in this problem with a person who thought more of themselves than others. It was then that Bessienth decided she loathed selfishness in everyone. It was not a spur of the moment decision but rather one that had been developing daily disdain flowing into Requezzia's mind no matter how much the dragonet tried to keep it to herself. The dragonet paddled after the firelizard a while longer until she reached the large white dragon.
Watching as the boy splashed water on the white, Bessienth tilted her head to one side and then dipped her muzzle into the water, flicking a tiny amount of water at the white's large forepaw. Perhaps this was the way to get attention from someone... Maybe this was what she was supposed to do in order to get Hers to pay attention to her. Yet she could not love Ezzia as it stood now. Well, she was alive now, that was all she needed and Ezzia cared not for her whims which simply meant she could do as she wished. Got you. She said quietly to the white.
"I see, but it was not out of obligation." Bessienth had no ego that she had noted yet. However, she knew that there were a lot of dragons who had an inflated sense of self. Well, she'd heard tell of a few of the larger dragons being particularly difficult to manage. She smiled when he spoke of her impression, privately surprised that he had noticed. Then again, how could he have not noticed her, she was the most beautiful thing on those sands. It would have been impossible not to notice her particularly considering her wonderfully tailored robes.
"Weyrlinghood is..." Ezzia thought about it a moment, "Not exactly what I expected but it is certainly interesting. How long has it been since your own Weyrlinghood?" The Weyrling maintained her footing as best as she could knowing that she had walked a little deeper into the water than she would have intended. Waist deep was as far as she was willing to go but in all honesty knee deep was when she felt most comfortable.

Jarith, luckily, was easily distracted. The sprinkle of water on her forepaw was interpreted as a Terrible Water Assault and her gleaming eyes snapped to Bessienth. The little one had got her! She had got her good! Her inflated posture was quickly exchanged for a gleeful one. She gave a delighted whoop and slashed her tail through the air above the cyan, showering her in an arc of water.
Got you! she announced, much, much louder than Bessienth had before. Subtlety was not one of Jarith's best attributes.
Her antics made her move a fair bit in the water and E'rin opted to drop his arm from her shoulder and keep afloat by himself instead. "Oh, um," he said in doing so, "Let's see... Graduated in Autumn of 200... uh, three and a half Turns since." Seemed right. "Ish." Seemed safer. He swam closer to Requezzia so he could stand alongside her. Lana continued to paddle plaintively in the gap between Jarith and the humans, but Mitzi swished her little buggy legs and followed her boy. He put his hand against her head and let her feelers brush at his arm. Ma! she chirped contentedly.
"I get where you're coming from, though," he smiled. His free hand pried at some wet hair plastered to his forehead. "I definitely wasn't expecting to Impress. I don't even know if I was properly Searched? Because it was one of my dads' dragons that did it and she was the worst sort of green." Partway through, he realized that it was a fact he could have avoided bringing up, for the sake of his own feelings. A pang of sorrow hit him, but he muscled through it. He had to learn to talk about his dads sooner or later. "And I mean, I was eleven, right? Baby of the class with the sparkley dragon. All of it was just so crazy. It works out in the end, though." Mitzi's feelers ventured over to his ribs and he flinched away. "Hey! That tickles."
The pillie seemed pleased with that, though, and purred out a foam of bubbles under the water. [/blockquote]

As the water hit the white Bessienth felt something inside her. It was a desire to run around as she had on the sands but for a different reason. Not to show off but for something else. Even as the white lashed her tail through the water and sent a shower flying towards her, Bessienth felt the feeling again. Something deep inside her stomach and chest boiling out. She wanted to shout and bugle but at the same time didn't want to. Bessienth was not a loud dragon like some of the others amongst her clutch. No, she wanted to stay quiet...
As the water drenched her, she spluttered and flapped her wings faintly against the water, liking the feeling of the water as her wings hit it, the waves rocking her body gently in the water. She was not sure what this was. This was something she had not encountered yet but... Bessienth liked it. The cyan brushed her wing against the water, sending a fan of water towards Jarith. It was not as large as the water that had been splashed at her but certainly more than before.
Can you be Mine? The cyan looked up into the eyes of the white. In her mind there was no reason she could not bond to another creature. It was not normal that was certain but there was no reason she could not look. Yet there was no melding of the minds and no feeling as she had felt on the sands. As she asked this of Jarith, she kept her thoughts from Ezzia as she had slowly learned to do.
"That must have been... Trying." Requezzia smiled in what she perceived to be a knowing way and then brushed her hand lightly into the water. Certainly whites were not common and yellows even more so. In their class, Valeath had already gained a lot of attention from others. Something he had said made her frown though as it processed in her mind. "One of your dads?"
The weyrling emphasised the use of the word 'one' wondering about that. She had been raised in a Hold to be sure but she understood some of what happened in the Weyrs not to mention Kakiron had been interested in men. So that she understood but the concept of being Searched by one's family members escaped her. "Could both of them have Searched you?" How much easier this whole thing would have been if she'd had a family member that could just put her on the sands as had been done with E'rin.
When she spotted the bug, she recoiled with surprise and only just managed to mask her disgust. Requezzia was not a fan of small things that crawled. Anything that was small and crawled. This was even worse than anything else she had encountered. "What is that!?"

Jarith trilled at the return fire. She loved splashing! She loved summer! She loved that E'rin loved it, too, because he was so much happier and social. She expected Bessienth, of course, to be just like any other playful dragon, just a little smaller - but the curious question caught her off guard. Her swirling eyes widened and she lowered a glittering snout. There were no rainbows in either of their eyes, though. They hid only in the nuances of Jarith's shining hide.
Yours? she asked. Then, her maw opened into a toothy dragon's grin. How absurd! No, no, I belong to E'rinLoveMine! And you to Yours! But I could be your mine as in your friend, yes, ohhh! I would be your friend! And we can splash forever and ever and ever. I can be that sort of Yours! But not a real Yours, really, and you can't be a special Mine like IrithLove because he's the bestest and you're okay but you're not the bestest and you're pretty small and not as lovely and pretty and kind as Irith. You should meet Irith! Oh, he is so pretty, just like me - almost. I'm prettier. But he is the bestest Irith! I love him very much! I love E'rinLove, too! And Lana and Levi and Levi II and Murmle and Mitzi and Merps and summer. Summer is so warm and nice. [/i] She flared her wings and caught the sun's rays, craning her neck to admire her own radiance. Then, she looked back at Bessienth, her eyes matching the clear blue of the sky. You are nice!Mitzi had drifted somewhat behind E'rin, and he entertained her happy feelers blindly. "Well, yeah, it was," he nodded, "I don't think Weyrling training's really meant for eleven-Turn-old kids, y'know? And I was always so confused about everything, not just the training." He hoped, at least, that he had sorted himself out most of the way. X'ni had always told him about teenhood like it was some terrible dark splotch in your history, where your mind went all crazy and you did a lot of stupid things. He was pleased to find that he felt like himself the whole way through, and it wasn't nearly as scary as foretold, but he understood the meaning. Finding himself was hard and Jarith, for a time, had only made it harder. Finally, though, he felt more solid and grounded, if only because his period of mourning had dragged him down out of the clouds. Then he paused in thought. "I guess they could have," he issued slowly. "There isn't really any rule against it. It's just that... Well, I dunno, it was just sort of tense, going to the candidatemaster to tell them I've been Searched. They asked who did it and I told them, right - Enlith of X'ni - and they gave me this really funny look. Oh-- right. My dads were renegades before. Y'ever heard of the Renegade War? Dragons fighting dragons. They probably glorified it a little." He had never really thought of it before, but he was profoundly proud of his parents - not for being crazy, but for fighting for what they believed in, whatever that was. "Anyway, the candidatemaster was pretty skeptical, but... I Impressed, so I guess there was a reason."Mitzi, giving a cheerful, garbled coo, swished her way around to E'rin's front, giving Requezzia a fright. E'rin grinned, a little embarrassed at having startled her into jumping back. "Oh, this is Mitzi," he explained, "First of four. Pillies, that is. I have four. They're super friendly! Well, maybe not Levi II, but he's not all bad." From the raft the other three made further out in the lake, Levi II let out a surprisingly loud ' Hrrrmmmm[/i].' [/size][/blockquote]

The Cyan watched the white with keen interest and hope that perhaps it was possible for dragons to bond with other dragons. At Jarith's reaction, she felt a little saddened. She belonged to Hers? Surely she belonged to herself. Wasn't Hers her own? Can I be Mine? The white seemed smart and friendly though. Bessienth decided that she rather liked the larger dragon. She was interesting and funny but not because of her hide, the rainbow colours moving to mesmerise Bessienth if she stared long enough but she was certain the white knew the answers. You are smart. I would like being friends.
Irith also sounded like an interesting dragon she would have to try to meet one day with the way Jarith spoke of him. Perhaps he would also know some of the answers to her questions. Bessienth paddled a little closer and then looked at the bigs and firelizards the white mentioned. Perhaps she could take something like that one day? Maybe that would be something she could make Hers. However, she knew in her mind that Ezzia had always disliked pets. Still they looked like a lot of fun.
Eleven turns was rather young to be entrusted with a whole other life. Then again most people probably did not expect someone as young as that to Impress at their first hatching. Certainly, Requezzia had seen the young boy on the sands and considered them silly for allowing the boy to stand in the first place. Of course her own decision to stand had been made quite spur of the moment when she found out they needed people but at least she had more experience to her name.
The word renegade made her stop worrying about the creatures as she looked at him. Barely a murmur had been heard in Igen that she recalled of course she had been E'rins age at Impression when such words were being spoken. Ezzia rarely took notice of such things when she was growing up but she at least knew that renegades were bad. Did this make E'rin bad?
"They're... Strange." Yet another reason why Ezzia did not particularly like going too far into the water. Who knew what was out there. "The renegades. I heard a little of course but I was younger then. I suppose nothing as exciting as that will happen in my time." Other than Threadfall of course but, really, how bad could that be? It was easily defeated by fire.

I love friends. Friends are the best things in the whole entire world. I'm friends with everyone! Especially Irith. He's my bestest best friend forever and ever. He sorta has colours like you all in his hide because he's like a pretty pretty rainbow. You're a pretty colour! Not as pretty as me though. Maybe close, if you weren't so tiny, but not quite! There's not enough of your pretty colour because you aren't big yet. OHHH. How old are you? Oh, wait, I should know. I should know this! I saw you. I remember. [/i] And she did, and would for a very long time, for even if she rarely seemed like it, she still had the exemplary intelligence of the whites. Numbers, however, took more time than she liked. Oh, um, and yes! Yes, be Yours! Have two Mines - you and your person! Oh, I think that would be okay. I could be Mine! Oh, hello, MineJarith, how are you? I am Jarith! Aha![/i] Grinning, she twisted onto her back and made a large splash. Lana, not far off, bobbed up and down in the waves that followed and creeled. E'rin, meanwhile, continued to entertain Mitzi idly, partly because the pillie was being particularly sociable, and partly to keep her away from Requezzia's clear reservations. "Yeah, I still don't know very much," he smiled sheepishly. "People don't like to talk about the renegades. It happened so long ago, I guess, and maybe that's why. People got hurt and it must have been so strange to see dragons fighting dragons... I mean, I know the stats and stuff. After my dads-- well, anyway, I read the records. But I don't think my dads would have told me all of the truth. For one, I was too shy to ask." Here, he laughed a little. "They kept a lot to themselves. They thought it was the right thing to do, I guess, but the outcome wasn't what they expected, so they weren't too talkative when it came up." He shrugged. "I dunno, they seemed like good people to me. I mean, not good. They were pretty... off, in their own respects. But I guess they meant well. They weren't bad. I mean, they loved each other, and the adopted me and loved me too." Finally, he trailed off, drifting into a sad, fond nostalgia. It felt good to talk about it to someone. He thought, briefly, that Requezzia probably didn't care to hear all of it, which was probably why it was easy to open up. If it was someone who knew him, he'd have to deal with their coddling in return. Even A'lan hadn't heard a speech with such sincerity - but A'lan probably knew it all anyway. "Sorry," he grinned, perking back up. "It's been a weird Turn for me. The summer's really good though, hey? Was the weather this nice where you come from?"[/size][/blockquote]

The white seemed to be talking even faster if possible and this meant it took a little time for Bessienth to decipher what Jarith was actually saying. After a short moment, Bessienth flicked her tail and rustled her wings slightly the only indication that she was pleased with the answer she had received. Yes, she could be her own. Her Hers. The human was useful in some ways like for feeding and other things but she was happy that she could belong to herself and wander around free. That was very important.
Friends... The concept still remained strange to Bessienth. How could she like anyone if they did not deserve her respect? How was all of that supposed to work... Hers seemed to treat friends as though they were things to be used but Jarith didn't seem to be talking about friends in that way. You are clever, she said to the white, Friends are supposed to be nice to each other? What is nice for you?
He spoke of the renegades in a manner that made Requezzia wonder what had happened and whether there were many still remaining in the Weyr. How hard would it be for them to rally behind another leader and start everything once more? The idea of straying away from the Weyr was a tempting one but only if she could be the leader. The Queen of all the riders who had followed her. Then again, with Threadfall what could they really do? It seemed a foolish venture overall.
"I see." Only she didn't really see but sometimes it was better to say something than nothing. Perhaps she should have said something else about these fathers of E'rin's. He made it seem as though they were no longer here but then she did not want to pry into his life more than was necessary. She had something she could use anyway... "It is very warm almost all the time. I suppose it is quite different as we have colourful clothes, you cannot walk a short distance without seeing someone in another colour you'd never seen until that point."
Ezzia loved colour and she did love Bessienth's hide. It was just the kind of vibrant colour she could imagine on a beautiful, flowing dress. One she would love to requisition from her mother. How could she describe the colour though? She would just have to travel there again one day and demand a dress be made.
