For the Candidates, dinner was just starting. There were always a few empty seats: punishment, chores and a curious excess of personal affairs saw to that. Some of those seats were just too small for the day's burdens, even with plates of food planted in front of them as odorous bribes.
Qosis was outside in the dark. Not even the light of the first rising moon reached him, as it was squelched under a thick and broody cloud cover. The waterfall pool he was stripping beside had turned almost black from the absence of stars and moonlight. Down to drawstring shorts, Qosis edged toward the steep outcrop of polished rock on the eastern side of the pool. A few days ago it would have been an especially unsafe maneuver, as the stone had been blanketed in a cyanic algal bloom. He had been one of the workers charged with controlling it, and given that he was cleaning off the lip of his favorite swimming spot, he had been particularly diligent in seeing the algae gone. But even with the sure grain of untainted rock under his toes, the trader refused to dive or even jump. Even he could be surprised by an unmapped rise in the basin's stone floor.
That would leave him bloody-headed and drowned, washed downstream to the lake. Inglorious! Qosis lowered one leg at a time instead, then slipped into the warm waters of the season. The long hair at the back of his head fanned out on the surface as he submerged his mouth and nose and bubbled with contentment, eyes rolled toward the sky. Not many dragons were tempting the stacks of cumulus, even if no warning peals of thunder had growled out of the clouds yet. But then it had been mentioned in lessons that dragons were not always fond of night, like whers. There were certainly enough of them cavorting in the lake proper regardless of time. One of the reasons he came here for his laps was to avoid risking himself to their multi-ton aquatic frolicking.
He drifted under the bridge, barely able to see beneath its broad shadow. Sometimes when he came down there were pairs of lovers indulging themselves, but they tended to clear off when they saw Qosis arrowing toward them at his briskest pace. He did not see or hear anyone today, but with the fitful smacks of water on rock infecting his ears and blackness clogging his vision, he would enjoy no certainty. To either side of the bridge, the river began to speckle with rain. Not a good sign. Qosis kicked off the wall, swimming for the far end of the pool, determined to treat himself to his full exhausting exercise before the storm.

Night. It was a nice time to just relax, and go to the lake. Normally, she didn’t like going to the lake alone, but it was needed. Early night, not long after the setting of Rukbat, was the time she took her Pillie trio of blue Bennett, brown Bear and black Onyx to the water to play before bed. Even with the coming rain, she brought her pillies to the lake. Bennett rode on her head, his favorite spot, while Onyx clung to the back of her shirt, and Bear to the leg of her pants. As soon as she was a half dragons length from the waters edge, Bear dropped from her pant leg and scurried towards the water, hissing and gurgling to himself in excitement. The brown pillie was so excited, he didn’t even notice the person swimming in his water. ”Calm down, Bear Baby,” Catori giggled as she picked Bennett from her head and closed the distance to the water. Bennett gurgled happily as Catori rubbed his first segment. Once on the waters edge, she plopped herself down and let Onyx release himself from her back and watched as he ran to the water. She placed Bennett down and smiled at the blue as he looked up at her with happy sounds. The blue turned, then let out an angry hiss as his segmented body arched. His insect eyes focused in on movement in the water that was not his companions. A screech echoed from his mouth and soon, Bear and Onyx were also looking at the person. Catori’s eyes searched for a moment, but soon found the young man, or boy, she couldn’t tell, swimming in the water. ”Oh, boys, hes just swimming before the storm! HELLO THERE!” Catori waved her hand to the swimmer with a smile on her face. She didn’t raise from her sitting position, but instead, slid her bare feet into the cool water. As raindrops started to fall, she looked up for a moment, letting the water hit her in the face, then she lowered her gaze again. Bennett, though now swimming, charged towards the swimmer and started circling the young man. Catori giggled. Her protective little blue Pillie. Bear and Onyx were less concerned with the swimmer, and would only occasionally hiss at the person. Onyx would swim fairly close to the swimmer, making odd sounds of curiosity as he looked the new person over, then would swim away to join his brown companion. ”Don’t mind my boys. They aren’t used to meeting new people,” Catori smiled warmly, wondering who she would meet.

Water surged past his ears with every stroke, more deafening than the rain, but it did not keep Qosis from detecting a nearby scream. After a brief analysis, his brain suggested the sound was somewhere between herdbeast and firelizard, and the Candidate grimaced. A more distant word-sound followed. Qosis shifted his trajectory, moving out from under the bridge on its southern side, where the waterfall pool emptied into the lake. Even without the added shadow of the bridge over his head, he was having trouble seeing. Raindrops pummeled his eyes with irritating frequency.
"'Lo!" he echoed the mystery speaker nonetheless, one arm lofted from the water and waved toward the nearest shoreline rather than any particular silhouette. A few seconds later his vision adjusted to the slightly greater light, and he noticed the seated woman nearby. She was saying something about her "boys." Qosis blinked, eyeing the surrounding waters. He saw at least a couple dark, rounded shapes surface briefly near him, then sink down again. "Children should not be brought out here right now..." he muttered to himself.
He was sure now the woman was no one he knew. Still, if she was intent on summoning him out for purposes unknown, he could not turn back to his work just yet. He advanced to the shoreline, watching as one of the dark heads of the "boys" slithered around in front of him again. A second later his foot kicked the stone bottom, and he realized with some pain that there was no room for a "boy" in that depth of water. Unless the caller really was a fool, and had set a bunch of strangely aquadynamic toddlers on him.
When he saw the shape coming around again he reached out, only to have his fingers bounce off a hard, hairless surface. Qosis jerked his head back in surprise. He made a much quicker ascent up the rest of the shoreline, leaping free of the last misty tongue of water as if it were boiling hot. He whipped back around to face the lake, shoulders hunched and hands closed into fists. He looked aside to Catori a few seconds later, chest rising and falling with a rapidity born from more than fatigue. "Your boys," he rumbled, accusatory. "They appear to be spiderclaws."

Catori watched both the young man, and her pillies with bright eyes. Bennett didn’t seem to want to leave the young man alone, while Onyx and Bear were only partially interested in the person. It amused her how different the Pillie’s personalities were. Even through the bit of rain that was quickly falling, she sat there, amused as could be. Then, her eyes were drawn to the young man as he started towards the shore. A slight bit of unease drifted into her chest, but only for a moment. He wouldn’t dare harm you. I would eat him, bit by bit, just to watch him bleed! Koketeth’s voice was strong, yet sleepy. It made the blonde girl grin and shake her head. But blood stains your hide! Catori added to the dragon in a teasing tone. Small price to pay to make someone sorry for their actions! She grunted. Catori was about to giggle when the young man bolted out of the water like he had just been touched by a ghost. His sudden movements made Catori yelp and fall backwards. She lay there for a moment, until Bennett climbed out of the water and clung to her chest. Only then did she sit up and look at the young man. She blinked, slightly confused as he panted, as if scared to death, then spoke. ”Spiderclaws? No, they are Pillies. They are water creatures,” She replied to him, obviously still confused by what was going on. Onyx and Bear were swimming closer to the bank now, gurgling and grunting in glee. Catori’s eyes looked at the two for a moment, while petting Bennett, then back at the young man. He’s kinda’ cute, she shot to Koketeth, who only crooned. Catori began to wonder what this guy’s story was. She was eager to know. ”This is Bennett the blue, That’s Bear the Brown, and the black is Onyx. I’m Catori, rider of Green Koketeth,” As she spoke, Catori stood and smiled at the young man, a smile on her fair face and her blue eyes glittering with the excitement of meeting someone new, especially after seeing that he was scared of her Pillies.

Upon noticing his caller's new placement on the ground, Qosis extended an arm to help her rise. He just tried to keep his hand from brushing against the blue mass stuck to her in the process. His brows lifted at her response. Spiderclaws certainly fell under the domain of water creatures. Yet with the blue pillie in such proximity, only stubbornness would continue to insist that the insectoid creature had any similarity to the many-legged crab he had previously assumed. Only a very fat spiderclaw could be related to Bennett.
"Qosis. Dragon Candidate," he answered her trade of name and station, swallowing back any further comments on the pillies for the moment. She was a dragonrider, so she deserved that much courtesy. As usual, his introduction came in fragments, mood dictated by tone rather than word use. Right now, Qosis' voice was warming, slowly. "I thought perhaps you needed me for something." He scanned the wet gloom around them, empty of other dragons and people at the moment. "I am being too wary at late."
Chills twitched his skin and Qosis turned away from Catori. He waved her after him, not thinking clearly enough on his status for anything more appropriate. Eating up the distance from one side of the bridge to the other with his monstrous stride, he quickly returned to his bag of clothing and fished into it for a towel. No good could be done for drying him in this weather, but he draped it over his shoulders to keep him warm. He did run it across his hair first, squeezing out the excess drippings.
Qosis recalled Catori's station. He turned back to face her, disarming any sudden consternation straining his features with a friendly smile. "You have a Green, you said?" he mused, tone already locked to praise. "You can tell her I say hello, if it is any concern of hers."

Catori got to her feet with ease, with his help of course, and smiled at him happily. ”It’s a pleasure to meet you, Qosis!” she spoke with a happy tone, and listened to him further with intent ears and wide eyes. Had she needed him? Well, she never really needed any one, but shard it all she sure liked the company of a nice guy. She giggled to herself as she looked at him. Her giggling quieted when he motioned to her. She was hesitant, but followed slowly. Once she understood what he was doing, she plucked Bennett off of her and put him on the ground. ”Go play, Ben,” She cooed to the blue. The pillie grumbled and crawled off to the water where his companions still swam happily and joined them. Only then did Catori skip the rest of the distance to Qosis. She watched him, amused and interested in what he was doing. Only then did she really acknowledge his last statement. ”No, I don’t need anything,” She giggled again, her thoughts still in the gutter, as they normally were at night, well, at any time. ”But I am always happy to meet new people, like yourself!” She added only a moment later. She shot the pillies a glance, making sure they were all alright, then looked back at the young man. He had a nice face on him, and looked to be in nice shape. Now the question was if he was worth her time. She would do the normal tests, oh yes, the normal tests, and see how much he would bend to her. Oh how she enjoyed doing the tests! Just the thought made her grin like a drunken dragon.
Catori was brought back from her thoughts by his voice again. She shook her head slightly, clearing her mind and pushing rain damped bangs from her fair face. A wicked smile formed on her face as she giggled. ”Oh, all my lovely Koketeth cares about is if you are attractive. She would be very pissed with me if I was making friends with someone who wasn’t,” She let her voice purr as she slightly batted her eyes at him. She wanted to break out in giggles. He would die at sight of your beauty if he wasn’t attractive, Mine. Only handsome men eyes can stand to look into the face of a beautiful lady, Koketeth’s voice crooned into Catori’s mind, making her smile. ”And she says you must be handsome, because only handsome men can look at beautiful ladies,” Catori felt as if this was needed to be told to the young man. Plus, it added to her test, to her fun flirting fit.

The dragonrider did not seem to have taken offense to his lack of proper decorum at all. Though vision and hearing were not to be taken for granted in this spoilt evening light, she also looked and sounded young. Younger than him. Almost as impish as some of the female Candidates he was forced to share the Barracks with. Qosis pushed back his revulsion at the thought. He tried to focus on the rider's words, but as they became increasingly bold and childish in their flattery, the corner of his mouth tugged at a grimace.
"Dragons must see better at night than I thought," he said, continuing noncommittally as he processed the flirtation. "Thank you, though. Or thank Koketeth." He shouldered his bag, glancing toward the water, but the rain was cascading in silvery sheets now that precluded any further view of the pillies. Greenrider, he thought to himself. There were many stereotypes available, mostly about the male riders. Perhaps they crossed to the women as well, but Qosis did not like to hold with them in the first place. Catori was making it difficult.
He wiped a glut of rainwater from his hair and eyes, sighing at the inconvenient storm. "I need to go under something," he informed his newest and bubbliest acquaintance, hiking one hand up above his head in illustration. He was not far from the Barracks, but he avoided looking sharply in that direction. He did not care to overemphasize his current position, particularly in light of the imminent question: "And how long have you been a rider at Dalibor, my lady?"

This was just what Catori needed. She hadn’t seen X’mor or Frino in so long, that she thought she was going to explode from all the built up flirts. It made her grin and want to giggle more as she looked at Qosis. By the look on his face, she slightly figured that he knew what she was doing. Which was a good thing. The oblivious were annoying to flirt with. So, she only held her head higher and tried to look cute. ”Koketeth and I only share the truth,” In the back of her mind, she snorted. That was a half lie, but he didn’t need to know that. Koketeth told the truth a lot, but herself? Oh she was as sly as a snake in the grass when she needed to be, which wasn’t too often.
”Come on. Lets go to the bridge,” She trotted off to the bridge in a happy hurry. The bridge only had enough space between the water and wall to sit, but that was enough to get out of the rain. Once under the shelter, Catori wrung her blonde hair out, letting water flow from her and back into the water way where it belonged. She turned back to her new companion, well, her company, and beamed as she listened to him. She had to think for a moment. ”Only a full rider for about…a turn or less. But I have been in Dalibor for a few turns. About three or four turns,” She said with a big smile, then her smile faded for a moment. Sharding memories. She looked out through the rain at the lake. The cursed lake. Where life changed, and nightmares were bred. She shivered at the thought. Forced breeding. That was all that popped into her mind for a moment.
MINE! Koketeth’s mental voice snapped Catori back into the moment and she shook her head. It took her a moment, but her smile returned. ”What about you? When you come here?” She asked as she sat down and pulled her knees to her chest, letting her silvery-blue eyes look up at him, like an excited puppy about to get a treat. I like this angle, Catori said to Koketeth, thanking the dragon in her own, odd way. Of course you do. You are looking up at him. You like to look up at males, Koketeth teased Hers softly as she yawned back on her ledge.

He had thought the caverns would suit for shelter if not the Candidates' barracks, or maybe this plucky Greenrider's weyr, if only for the added warmth...but she was all impulse. He was still trying to decide if he was required to follow when he ducked to look under the bridge. There was a scant patch of dry rock available. He had to squeeze in right next to her, legs extending loosely toward the pillie-infested waters. His heels grazed the surface, pulling back briefly when Catori gave the lake a strange look. Qosis glanced the same way, but when he looked back the rider was beaming at him again.
The Candidate pulled the towel from his shoulders and began running it over his soaked limbs. The rain still misted his side occasionally, but not enough to negate a good drying.
"The start of the season. That is when I landed on this continent, too. It was two days from landing that I was Searched." Catori was sitting very close to his leg, bunched up as she was. ...one kick and she would plummet into the lake.
Qosis had no incentive to do so, and he was not sure why the morbid visual occurred to him.
He stopped rubbing at his leg with the towel as glows lit up at either side of the bridge. The illumination had come late this evening, the drudges-- or Candidates --responsible probably fearing the furious rain. Despite the added light, no one noticed them, but he could see Catori better now. Coalescing drops of water trembled off his bearded chin. "So you have been here for a long time." He looked out at the lake. "You gave that a look though, when I asked. I thought your bugs came from there."

Catori listened now, a small smile on her face. When the lights appeared, though, she froze. She REALLY didn’t need to get into more trouble. Not that O’ris could do anything about it now, but still. She was pretty sure someone would pitch a fit if they saw her there with a candidate, even though she was sure he was her age, if not older. She watched the glow for a second, thinking, waiting, and hoping, but when they passed, she looked back at Qosis. Oh how she wanted to touch! His face looked smooth, besides the facial hair, and the look of the water…Oh it made her want to sigh, die and go to heaven.
Then he spoke again. About her looking at the lake. She got slightly nervous, but then, with a deep breath, calmed herself. ”The pillies came from the river…and here I guess, but I dunno’ what happened to the wild ones,” She muttered softly and looked at a light brown form that was now crawling out of the water and on the bank, still out in the rain. Bear looked at her and Qosis for a moment, then proceeded to clean himself just as bug like creatures do. She smiled and sighed again. ”But, sights hold memories, gotta’ take a look at that page of your book so you don’t make that mistake again, ya’ know?” She smiled warmly. That was it, she couldn’t stand it. She just had…to…TOUCH! She lightly, ever so lightly, touched his arm with a smile. ”Though, I’m sure you don’t have many mistakes to haunt you,” she crooned with a sneer. Oh why was she having this much fun?! She just hoped no one would see her. Oh how her ass would be mounted on a wall somewhere.

Qosis' wet eyebrow twitched. The way the rider talked was not too different from the average trader, or any other Pernese of middling education. But then, she said she had been here for several Turns. Waiting to ride dragons, then riding dragons. No time to play the harper. And now, with a simple question, she had lost a fair share of her mindless glee. Interesting.
Then came the bug. She was still talking to Qosis, but he was watching the brown pillie creep in under the bridge glow's radius and groom. It was disgusting. It had more than six legs, that could not be natural. Yet attach wings to it and call it a fire-bug, and half the Weyr would want one. When Catori's voice changed from its usual chirp to a croon, the trader's eyes returned to her. They narrowed at the assumption.
"You have a poetic retrospect," he answered in a voice soft, deep and cold. "Do those pillies have any use? Can they..." He considered the clumsy pile of parts constituting Bear, then shook his head. "No betweening. No message-carrying." It crossed him that the pillie could perhaps produce a sound like dolphin speech, but it was not a certainty and there were dolphineers for those purposes anyway. His gaze carried to one side in thought, he finally noticed the hand on his arm. With all the scars webbing it, he had not even felt her.

Catori looked at the young man’s face, quite happy with how things were going at the moment, and when she silenced, she noticed he was watching Bear. She smiled slightly, and sighed heavily. ”Well, Bennett will carry messages short distances. They are good guard dogs, too,” She said still in her crooning tone, but softer than before. ”Great company. But nothing like another person,” She hummed and crooned again, wondering if he would ever really be phased. Maybe he really was phased, and just hiding it better than she knew. Then again, he really seemed distraught by her pillies. She let goosebumps form on her arms as a short and easy wave of wind blew through under the bride and over her wet skin. She instinctually moved a bit closer to the heat of Qosis. Ok, so maybe it wasn’t all instinct, but that was part of it. Her hand still rested on the young man’s arm, which in truth, she forgot she had put there.
”Why do they bother you? The pillies, that is?” She finally asked in a soft, sweet tone as she leaned into him a bit more with a small, cute smile on her lips. She was actually curious of why he was so uneasy with the odd little creatures that she called part of her family. Maybe this young man wasn’t worth it after all. If he couldn’t accept her darling boys, then…maybe he wasn’t good. Then again, she had to find someone to get rid of the thoughts of X’mor and Frino! She had to, and this young man sure had the looks to please her. ”As for being poetic…” she paused for a moment, trying to think of something cunning and cute to say, but she couldn’t think of anything, so a normal answer was just going to have to be used. ”It happens when you listen to your gut, not your head,” She laughed softly.

What a considerate compliment: his company was better than that of a pillie. Qosis watched Catori's inching up to his side, her hand still ineffectually clasped to his arm. She was bold enough in word; part of him wanted to snap at her to match herself with action. But he could also see she was not a young lad tangling with her first brigand, but a woman who had already been granted too much lenience for silly behavior. Snap judgment to be sure-- he still did not know what had clammed her up so quickly about the lake --but accurate enough for the time being. He said nothing of her grope at the old lashings.
"Bother me?" the Candidate echoed with a surprised blink, and the second his eyes opened anew they filled with the electric white flash of the tormented skies. He took to squinting till the spots ran out of his vision. "They do not bother me," he corrected. "What bothers me is keeping animals for the sake of it. Look at it this way: my kin and I have brought tithes to the ancestors of this Weyr for many Turns, all leading up to this time, this place. We do not do this out of the goodness of our hearts. Certainly not. We do it only because without dragons we're all Threaded. And a dragon is a being of great intelligence, charisma, and power. You are a dragonrider. You have already achieved every little boy's dream. You are in every song and every soul."
And Qosis smiled again at last, for Catori did not quite fit how every little boy imagined he would look atop his fighting dragon. "Yet if Thread were to not come, how hard would the harpers have to work? How quickly would those tithes end?" He leaned toward her, as if deposing a secret, but at the last second the glint of reflected glow in his eyes vanished and he paused. He recalled to whom he was speaking.
And he failed to lay out the exact sequence of events that would end the dragonriders of Pern. Thunder drowned even his voice for a few humbling seconds, capped by another silent pulse of lightning. He had seconds to speak yet before nature played the Bowl again. "My lady, I am only trying to illustrate that where there is no practical purpose for something, there is no reason to sustain it. I will not criticize you for your collection." Not aloud, anyway. "It is your decision as to what is useful enough to take on. And I am aware that some creatures on Pern give you no role in that decision. We are human. They are our dreams, and they can come to us at any time."

Catori couldn’t help it. She had to grin at his little speech. He spoke with quite some…oh what was the word she was looking for? Emotion? Maybe that was it, but she wasn’t too sure. No matter what it was, she liked it. Finally some more emotion rang into his voice when he spoke. With his speech, more and more was flowing into her own mind. She knew she could come up with a nice reply for him. Thunder shook her world, though, as she listened to him. It didn’t matter. It was only thunder and a few flashes of lightning. It was like a mixture of a dream, and a nightmare.
When Qosis finally silenced, she looked down for a second, letting the silence take hold of their minds before she spoke. ”But is it not fate that drive you? If there was no future, no…reason,…for you to do what you did, then people and dragons wouldn’t be here. Humans would bend to the thread. And plus,” She smiled and leaned into him more, not really caring anymore. ”They chose me. I had no say in what they did. Now, I love them like I would love a child. Since I doubt I will have children, my dear Bear, Bennett and Onyx, they, will be my children. It is in our blood to want…no…to NEED to be wanted and needed. And, truthfully, if it wasn’t for my Pillies and Koket, I probably would have given in and…” She shrugged with a smile. She would just leave it at that. ”Some things don’t need to be understood by our brains. Only fate does,” She smiled more and placed her head happily on his shoulder, looking up at him with bright eyes. It was a slightly touchy subject that they were talking about, but she had to admit, it was turning out nicely! ”Did you dream of being a dragon rider?” She finally asked, after staying silent for a moment. He had compared her to a young boy. She would have been fine with not being a rider, she thought about it occasionally when little, but it wasn’t a major dream. She wasn’t complaining about being on, no, not at all. She loved her dear koketeth, but she was curious. Did he fall under his own example?

Qosis had never given much thought to "fate." It was practical as a pillie. And it was a means of absolving him of his life as he had directed it. He wanted to retain ownership of his mistakes as readily as his victories, and fate consumed both. Maybe Impression introduced some watery quality into the brain that eliminated all fervent care for things beyond dragons, Weyrs and harper songs. More likely, he thought as he shifted enough to bring his shoulder out from under Catori's head, he was giving too much credence to a girl that just happened to be a rider as well.
"Do not call them your children unless you gave birth to them," he warned her. "You need to find something better than pets, and different from your dragon, to fill your 'need,' if it troubles you so." He did not get any other words off. Lightning mapped his droplet-studded face, and strobed mingling shadows of rider and Candidate on the stone before peals of thunder took over. Qosis took the moment to consider Catori's less irritating excuse for her pets. He knew that look.
By the time the storm permitted another speaking window, the trader's lips were toying with a smirk instead of a scowl. "I did say every little boy, didn't I?" he chuckled in review of his generalization. "But not me. I did not learn of their existence till I was too old for that." His olive eyes turned to one side in theatrical thought, then returned to her. "Four or five Turns was when I first muddled it out, I suppose. With the assistance of the harpers traveling with us, of course. But there are more important things for a trader's son to know. So over time I gathered bits and pieces of dragons, and tried to fit them together in my head when duty spared me the time. Dalibor was going to be my first real dragon sighting, my first direct dealings with a Weyr...and so it is, isn't it?"
Were he trying to sell the concept of dragonriding-- to himself, so it seemed --he might have swept his gaze pointedly across the Bowl just then, maybe extended his arm if there was a crowd going. Right now he attempted to peer out beyond the bridge, but between the pressing night shadows and the deluge there was nothing to see outside the bridge except Bear. Qosis realized he had not even heard a dragon challenging the thunder's roars for some time. "And now," he said, with a clearing of his throat. "Riding a dragon will be a necessity. But I shall not regret him."

A slight pang was hit in Catori’s brain. Quite frankly, she was getting annoyed with him insulting her Pillies. Sure, they weren’t full out insults, but it was still annoying to her. She let her face frown as she glared at him, her eyes suddenly sharp. Bennett the blue picked up on her frustrations and scurried out of the water and towards her, hissing and gurgling as he moved. The ran patted against his hard blue shell. He climbed up onto Catori’s head and glared at the other person, his legs and appendages feeling the air around him. He hissed more, quite ticked that someone would annoy His. He could care less about being insulted, but make His mad, oh that would not happen while he was around! Bennett’s mouth parts opened and closed as he let out various annoyed sounds. ”You are as closed minded as a…as a…I dunno’ what, but still!” Catori hissed. Her nose flared as she huffed out a sigh and pushed her moist hair out of her face. Slowly, she got up and moved back out into the rain. Bear began to follow her, and Onyx swam parallel to her in the water. Onyx’s head reached out of the water and he gurgled a questioning sound. ”No, Onyx, we aren’t leaving yet,” Catori replied, not really sure if that was what the creature had asked or not. Even if it wasn’t his question, it had silenced the black insect like creature. Bear stared up at His, his small eyes glittering with love through the rain. Catori smiled as she sat on a rock, with her back to the young man that had just ticked her off, and then pet the brown pillie. ”Go play, boys,” She crooned to them in a loving tone. Bennett and Bear didn’t move though, and soon, Onyx was also out of the water, looking up at His. Onyx crawled into her lap, begging to be pet, which was unusual for the black to do. ”What is wrong with you two?” Catori asked with a giggle as she pet the smooth black and let the Brown mess with her boot strings. ”Oh! Who cares what others think! You are my boys, and I love you so much,” She hugged the black, causing his legs to flail out and a gurgling hiss escape him. Bennett let out a bubbling sound that could only be described as laughing.
As Catori hugged the black, much against his will, Bear the brown scurried towards Qosis. Once right in front of the man, he let out a pissed off hiss, and lunged at him slightly, a mere annoyed warning, before crawling back into the darkness that was the water.

"A wherry?" Qosis suggested as Catori answered his modesty with an outburst. He didn't have the slightest idea what had set her off, and in fact was drawn less to her and more to the pillie that ascended to her head, perching there like an ungainly blue crown. His brow arched to impressive heights as what appeared to be Bennett's singular muzzle abruptly split open into separate parts. The trader's jaw hung; there was nothing on Pern quite like that! Whether it was morbid fascination or horror that stuck his eyes to Bennett, the enchantment broke as Catori got to her feet and stalked off into the rain. Qosis swallowed back the dryness in his throat.
He strained to see after her. Lightning flexed through the wall gap to the south, streaking the lake-top white and allowing him to spot her. She had not gone far. Not even out of hearing range, if he concentrated. But there was nothing worth his ear; she was talking to her bugs again. He leaned back as Bear scuttled out of the gloom toward him, hand subconsciously groping against the ground for a good-sized rock. But the pillie was off again just as rapidly and inconsequentially as his mistress. In fact the similarity alerted Qosis to a point: perhaps these pets Impressed as flits did, and shared their bonded's anger.
Or perhaps they were just ornery. Like Catori. The trader took notice that he was now too late to even volunteer himself for cleaning tables in the dining hall. The scraps he accumulated in that duty usually outdid what he could wrangle during his appointed dinnertime. And it was all thanks to the Greenrider, trying to swoop down and Search him for the Candidacy of her bed. If he offered a pinch of apology and a draught of humor now, he could still have that, and whatever food she had in her weyr. His stomach agreed with the plan, but the rest of him refrained and won it over.
She probably slept with pillies as pillows and he wanted no part of that, among other things. It was unusual though...he had met holder girls just as fickle. It was easier to not treat their emotions with any real gravity. And whatever their moods, he had never turned the holdbrats down. This was a new problem: he was too thoughtful to play the willing piece of meat for her. But not thoughtful enough to meditate on the conundrum while he was still stuck out in this storm.
The trader was up beside her after a few moments. He inclined his head rather than offering a full bow, not that it was bright enough out for his courtesy to be seen in either case. "My lady, I apologize for any offense I may have caused you," he began, never the trader to burn his bridges. "This was an honor that I hope to repeat with many of the Weyrfolk, as it is certainly not an environment I am used to, and I have much to learn." Diplomatic. General. Safe from feminine misinterpretation. "I should see myself to the barracks though, or my minders may worry where I have gone." He grinned, again a pointless expression mimed out in the dark for habit's sake. "Farewell to you and Koketeth. May you both see brighter skies and better hunting tomorrow."

Catori could hear him coming up behind him, and only turned to look when he was speaking. She listened to him, and grinned slightly. Then he turned away. Shard it. Why did she have a soft spot?! ”Oh wait for me. Lemme’ take ya’. Then if some one asks, I can tell them that you were helping me with my critters or something. Then it will be me in trouble, not you,” she smiled warmly to him again, granted, she did have to look up at him. He was lucky that she liked males…more than she liked food. Which was saying quite a bit since she LOVED food and the fact that she never gained weight. So yes, she loved men, and he was no exception. He just didn’t understand the love she had for her family, that was now all creatures of Pern. Plus, she had to keep her mind off of other things. She started off towards the barracks, then stopped. ”Well, maybe we could grab some warm klah first, and start over?” She asked with a slight, worried frown. She had been over sensitive. She would admit it. She was too focused on other things, and not on the good things that were coming at her. Maybe it was the recent graduation, or maybe it was Koketeth’s information that Frisk had run only a few nights before. Either way, it wasn’t Qosis’ fault at all. ”And…I can have Koketeth come to get Bear, Bennett and Onyx…” She said softly, almost too quiet to be heard over the rain. Says who?! Koketeth, please? No! He made you mad! If a male cannot keep a girl happy, then he fails at life! Catori couldn’t help but start laughing to herself as she covered her mouth with her hand in embarrassment. Koketeth, that was mean! Well! I am just stating the truth! Oh just come and get the boys! Your are cleaning my hide tomorrow then! I did that today! Yes, but you are making me fly in the rain, and land in the mud!
Catori giggled to herself and waved in apology. ”I’m sorry, Koketeth is being foolish,” She said with a nervous smile. She still hoped he would take the invite…and not think she was too crazy.

Qosis was quite certain that "helping with critters" was not a permitted excuse for showing up late to the barracks with a pretty woman on his arm. He was sure that, once the dragonrider had gone, he would enjoy his full reprimand without even having done anything to deserve it. It was worse than returning alone. Was that her plan? He eyed the greenrider's flickering expression, and drew his lips tight and flat at the corners. No. She did not seem canny enough for that level of game. Despite her actual intent, she had caught him in an unpleasant bind: he had staked his goodbye, and she had rejected it with a flood of silken sweetness. She was not listening to him.
"I really should go," the Candidate said, setting his jaw. "If you are going to call your dragon out in a storm, it should be to return you to the safety of your weyr. But it would be better if you climbed up yourself. In lessons..." But Catori had probably heard these warning stories several times over as a Candidate, then Weyrling. Lightning went for things that were close to the clouds. "You understand my concern," he said, shrugging his bare shoulders. Catori's mention of the dragon's speech earned her a wistful smile from the trader. "You do not need to accompany me. I know the way home." Qosis did bow this time, striking her feeble pleas dead with a formal farewell. "Take care of yourself, dragonrider."
Should she call after him when he turned and made for the barracks, Qosis was sure to be afflicted by momentary deafness. Utterly explainable: the rain, the thunder, the boom of dragon responses to both-- all could drown out a girl's begging. He did not mean to stride into the barracks wearing only his soaked shorts and scarred skin, but he did not honor any of the glances with blushing.
