NO IT MINE! SHE ARE STEAL! Ever since she’d brought the wher back to her room, Yalesk had shown an intense disliking for the pilfering pillie. At the moment, the tiny wherling was ducked low to the ground growling at the pillie whom was hissing back with equal disdain. ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!! Never mind the fact that the item in question, a glass bowl she had made in her youth when deciding which smithing path to take, belonged to neither. Still, Yalesk had spotted it when they were moving to the wherling barracks and had immediately claimed it as her own. The green had just about carried the item in her mouth all the way.
Yet this night was the first that Hearty had spent with them. Hearty stopped in during the day but Yalesk was often asleep at that time… Thank goodness… So Yalenia had been able to put off the inevitable meeting and subsequent brawl that would occur. Still, as soon as Hearty had arrived earlier that evening she had spotted Yalesk with the glass bowl, nosing it along the ground, and then lunged at the wher. Now, they were in the common area facing off against one another, the bowl sat on protectively by the amber pillie.
“Ladies, there is no need for this.” Yalesk jumped at Hearty who immediately rolled into a ball, her protective shell keeping her safe from the teeth of her assailant. “Yalesk!”
The green wher turned and looked at her, eyes whirling. She grudgingly stopped and backed off, tail lashing back and forth agitatedly. BUT SHE ARE STEAL! I know she did but I will sort it out. She is my pet. Yalesk froze and then looked back at Hearty with a snarl. NO YALENIA ARE YALESK’S… SHE ARE NOT STEAL YALENIA! Hearty lunged at Yalesk but Yalenia stepped between the two and caught the bug in something of a headlock, holding her as tightly as she could and then sliding the bowl back to Yalesk. Yet the green was enraged yet again and hissed once more. Look, she’s my pet. I don’t belong to her.
Yalesk moved around Yalenia and headbutted Hearty before she moved the bowl back to her, holding it in her front paws. Arr arr arrrrrrr!! Hearty hissed at the wher but stopped struggling and scuttled backwards. With the brawl effectively diverted for the moment, Yalenia flopped to the ground. “Come on… We have chores to do Yalesk.”
Nudging the bowl along, they began their work of cleaning the wherlings barracks. With only three of them there at the moment it was a little lonely but they still needed to keep everything clean…

He stripped his gloves as he stepped out of the cold. His long, ebony wherhide coat stopped swaying around his knees, the wind choked off by the rocky atrium. As he advanced further inside, he couldn't even feel it pressing against his back anymore. Q'sis took a sharp right, into the first home off the first chamber, though he stopped in the entryway. He waited, staring into the bleary glow-lit dark. In a weyr there was always sun or starlight complementing the baskets, but for the resting place of whers that was an unsatisfactory condition.
So they had settled here, where the base of the Weyr formed a light-quelling bottleneck. Still, if someone had been home in this one particular cave, he would expect its own lights to be up, rather than subsisting on the main chamber's residue. If someone had been home, their wher would already be out to examine him. A distant splash turned the dragonrider's head for a moment. Then he gave a last glance to the empty shadows before him, rough fingertips grazing the frame of the cavern's entrance.
ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!
Richocheting down a series of tunnels and irregular spaces, the noise reached him broken and shrill, but it still pulled him back from his useless sentry. He faced north, where the last echo of the screech had faded. There was a clatter on the stone that he immediately recognized as the work of tiny claws.
"Yalesk!"
The cry was barely comprehensible when it got to him, but he pieced the syllables back together, then started toward the next chamber. He thought better of his route, though, and went back outside instead. Unath had been crouched beside the entrance, and she stumped a few hopeful steps along behind him, then deflated when he swept into the Wherling Barracks just beside the Quarters.
Intermittent, ringing scrapes directed him to the proper branch of the wher palace in miniature, and his silhouette overtook the entryway. Q'sis stared at Yalesk, then Yalenia, and took the view from the corner of his eye as acknowledgment that the pillie still existed.
"What's going on?" he demanded.

They had just started some of their cleaning. Well, Yalenia had started some of her cleaning, Yalesk seemed to be sitting brooding over her bowl, glaring at the pillie most aggressively. Fortunately, Hearty seemed disinterested in the bowl for the moment, and was scuttling around searching for new things to steal. Yalenia rather thought that one day she would awaken to seeing the bug mauled by her wher… She’d just have to reinforce to Yalesk that Hearty also belonged to her. That way, hopefully, Yalesk would become more protective over the pillie too.
A noise from Hearty, a distinct hiss, made Yalenia look over. Yalesk too jumped to her feet, growling softly. He are no steal Yalesk bowl! It took her a moment but Yalenia shortly recognised Q’sis, the first ever male sub-queen rider and an acquaintance of hers. Q’sis was a strange sort and one of the types of people Yalenia was not necessarily certain she knew how she felt about him. Either way, she so far had very little to dislike about him and thus counted the man amongst her friends of a sort.
“Well, even though there are three of us we have to keep the barracks clean. It’s my turn tonight before we’ll complete a few more chores.” Yalenia knew what Q’sis had been asking but she had things under control. With two volatile creatures under her care, things would always be tough but she had no doubt she could keep them from butting heads too much. Besides which, at the moment things were as they seemed. They were completing chores and the management of her own wher was truly her business alone. Yalenia was a rather proud woman and was unlikely to admit her struggles to any.
Yalesk pulled the bowl closer to her and glared at Q’sis suspiciously, a snarl tugging at her maw. Yalenia reigned the green in at least preventing another outright growl but the wher’s face was not any kinder. Truly, she looked like her mother accompanied by the red whirling eyes. With the distraction, Hearty began scuttling her way as much out of sight as she could, watching from a corner in which she had now hidden.
“How are you Q’sis?” [/blockquote]

Though he'd asked a question of her, Q'sis mostly ignored Yalenia's explanation as he stepped into the room, turning his head to give it a more studious onceover for threats. But the room was small, and no one else was there. Though he did not look at her, he did hear Yalenia's pointless excuse, and when his impulse to secure the barrack was satisfied, he narrowed his eyes back at her. But the grumbling, red-eyed wheret tugged at his attentions before he could offer reprimand.
"Good," he murmured instead, looking over Yalesk with a keen interest unswayed by the infant's obvious outrage. "If not gold, then green," he praised of Yalenia. "Small enough not to overburden you, tough enough to do her job. They're the optimum fighters. You won't have as much spare time as if you had chosen a proper egg-layer, but you'll have enough to make yourself useful. You could take healing, like that blue-woman that transferred in, except you won't pretend to be a man on top of that." It was hard for him to match the bite of his words with a proper tone in the face of Yalesk's steely green anger. His hands clutched on the air, his weight leaned toward the wheret.
But he did not leave his spot, nor try and touch her. After a moment these sensibilities churned against his mirth at the green's presence, and he retracted some of his smile. A more tempered expression was leveled at Yalenia. "You should drive the insect off. You do not have time for pets, and it must aggravate your green."

Eyes followed Q’sis around the barracks. As one, the pair watched the man Yalesk’s suspiciously and Yalenia’s more curiously. As one both made their own conclusions about the Tanrider, Yalesk that she did not like him and Yalenia that she was not certain of Q’sis’s thoughts. Suddenly Yalenia’s temper flared and the woman wasn’t entirely certain whether it was due to the words she was hearing or because of Yalesk as Q’sis took a step a little too close for the green’s comfort.
Yalesk hadn’t missed the lean towards her and dropped into an aggressive stance, glaring up at the man. She didn’t want him to touch her. He needed to stay away. This was her room! This was her area. If he was trying to steal things she would take him down. This bowl was hers. HER Yalenia had made it. Yalesk fight. Yalesk fight him. He come close, Yalesk fight him.
“Interesting words. I would have thought you of all people would understand that cross-impression means nothing of the sort. Besides that, it would be pointless to apprentice another craft when I am already reached journeyman status at my current.”
The smith had still not grown used to the bond she shared with her wher but her words were truthful and her arms folded just as Yalesk managed to break through the mental barriers and let out a small growl. The sound seemed to awaken Yalenia to herself and, again, she looked at the green with a pointed expression, yet again taking control of her emotions. They had been partnered to one another less than a season and things were still shifting in the dynamic.
As for his suggestion about Hearty… Well, there would be no driving the ‘insect’ off as he said. The pillie was old enough to care for herself but as much as Yalenia complained she did like the bug. Eyes narrowed slightly. “If things are difficult I will figure them out for myself, but thank you for your concern.”

"Not for men it doesn't," Q'sis cut in on Yalenia's counterpoint. She had, at the very least, pulled his attention off the green wheret. He stared her down, eyes flicking across her frame as if he would find some change in it, but she remained Yalenia. His gaze stuck at her hands before moving back to her face. "I understand the beasts are choosing what they need. But a male wher choosing a woman means she has something compatible to his maleness about her. Something unfeminine." His dusky complexion had paled over at the topic. "I have known it. They are monsters." He turned on the smith as Yalesk's tinny growl floated between them. "Don't question me."
The dragonrider tipped his head to one side, still trying to see Yalenia in some light that wasn't available in the tiny barrack. "At least your craft keeps you inside. I don't see how the SmithHall gets anything accomplished when it chooses to burn up the bodies of women," he continued in a simmer no longer directed straight at the greenhandler. His shapely eyebrows twitched together. "But it's not the worst thing you could be doing. If you're going to patrol, you should ask for something less injurious in the Craft. But maybe at some point your responsibilities will actually take and you'll 'figure that out for yourself.'"
He picked a short broom from the wall, holding it with one hand as he peered at the stubby bristles on the end. In his grip, it looked like a child's toy. "I am concerned, but I am also experienced," he said, tossing the broom up and catching it to point the bristles the other way. He stuck it very precisely into the dark crevice where Hearty had secreted herself. "If you are having trouble, you should ask for help. That's the way things work in this place. It's not something I got to do. Besides..." He swished the broom end around. "There's nothing attractive about a stubborn ass."

The last thing Yalenia could be was intimidated. Particularly when Q’sis was acting out of turn. She did not presume to tell him how to manage his dragon, despite having heard things about the tan that were not particularly heartening, so it was not welcome advice to hear such negative things levelled at her. Yalenia calmed her temper again. This was not just about her anymore. She had to remain calm for as soon as she lost control so too would Yalesk. “Unfeminine? What is wrong with being unfeminine? What difference does it make between a green choosing young Edison or a black choosing Ciali? I am only trying to understand your reasoning.”
Yalenia was not about to back down, nor listen to his orders. If he had a problem with her then she would be perfectly willing to settle this with words. Or otherwise. A pacifist by nature, Yalenia was the type of person who wished to talk things over and uncover reasons for hostility rather than jump the gun, get into a fight or worse let the aggression simmer inside.
“It was a choice I made to join that craft. By saying such things you do a disservice to me. My burns do not define me.” But her words were distracted as she watched Q’sis move towards where Hearty was hidden. Eyes widened as he made to attack the pillie and her alarm translated into Yalesk’s aggression. The wher hissed but did not attack for she did not care what happened to the bug.
Hearty moved out of the way as the broom handle came down near her and hissed before swiftly launching herself out of the corner and scuttling away. The broom handle had only just touched her behind because even for her fast movement, she was a large insect. Alarm flowed dimly through the bond but Yalenia was satisfied that Hearty was quite safe. She watched the amber make her way towards the other side of the room as far from Q’sis as possible but still hissing and spitting. Yalenia recognised that. If she didn’t end this now, Hearty would try to attack and there was no telling what Q’sis would do then.
“I am not here to be attractive. I am here to do my job. If I need help I will see my friend Kalenna or Alphahandler Audren.” Yalenia replied with some edge to her tone, but still conceding a point.
