Fel was so excited at the thought of taking a friend with her flying. It would be absolutely amazing to fly with another person. As good as it would be to start flying alone she was sure that the dragons would want to perhaps take some others around with them. She didn’t like the thought of going Between though. It sort of scared her a little. Especially when she realised that some people actually got lost there sometimes. Maybe she would impress a dragon who didn’t want to go Between either. She wasn’t sure whether she should feel pleased about it or annoyed. Either way, it was only a matter of time before she could fly with another dragon!
“It would be awesome! And I bet the dragon would love it too. Taking more of its friends with it.” She continued, “And Verity could be Queen of the whole Weyr just about! She would be taller than everyone.” Fel held her hand up in the air to demonstrate the fact and then scrubbed away once more. Oh Verity would probably be a little scared of the dragon but if she spent a lot of time around it then she would probably feel a little better. Besides, at least if Verity made friends with the dragon then maybe she would have someone to hang around with and protect her!
“And I only flew for a short while when I was searched. Not nearly enough time! I think that’s what made me really sure that this was what I wanted.” Fel nodded resolutely. Even if she didn’t impress, which wasn’t a possibility, then she would still stay in the Weyr. Maybe she would impress something else. Or perhaps she could hang around with Atenna and help her in being a Herder. [/blockquote]

Dragons had to go between, Atenna knew that much! They would surely die in Threadfall if they couldn't, for one thing. As long as the rider and dragon were good at what they did, and smart about it, they'd be fine. Fel was smart, so surely by the time her dragon was ready for that step, she would perform admirably.
"It depends on the dragon," she said with a grin. Reds didn't have friends, though admittedly she couldn't see Fel on a red or any ill-tempered dragon. A possessive one who would bear no passenger, perhaps - but that didn't seem the type to Impress the outgoing Fel, either, to Atenna's mind. Still, those pairings...they weren't something a layperson like herself could ever understand, and only time and hatchings would tell.
Atenna chuckled at that. The girl's delighted plans for the pup were cute, even though Verity likely had no desire to be queen and would be sick all over Atenna's lap from the heights. A dragon protector on the ground, though...that would be nice, assuming the little thing could ever stand to be around it.
"Good," she said. People with a true aversion to heights and flight likely wouldn't be Searched, if the dragons could tell...they'd make for absolutely disastrous fighters. "I'm glad you're sure - it's best to be confident. I think some people come here feeling pressured to do so, by family or friends, or by all the legends they hear about dragonmen...but it's best to be happy about it, I think. To know you made the right choice." Nervous, uncertain candidates could cause catastrophe on the sands.

Goodness, if she impressed to a dragon that just didn’t like spending time amongst others she wasn’t entirely sure how she would cope. Well, at least if she did impress to such a dragon she would be able to convince it to spend some time with the other people. Her friends and people she found to be heaps of fun. It might be difficult at first but at least together they would be a most formidable team! She didn’t truly know much about the different types of dragons except for rumours that the reds and coppers were the scariest. She shuddered at the thought of having to face Kalith’s stares. She’d heard that the Sr Queen was a little scary.
She had also heard that it was important to be confident because otherwise hatchlings might walk straight past them and not take a second look because they seemed too unsure about their own talents and skills. She imagined that if someone got too distracted during the hatching they probably wouldn’t impress at all. She would have to concentrate extra hard. “Yeah. I mean the legends sure are amazing but I’d never really thought it was a possibility for everyone to have a chance at standing. There were stories but I didn’t believe them at first.”
Now she sure did. She truly had little to lose by way of what she might impress. She figured that she had managed to get this close to impression, it seemed impossible to her that it would not now happen. She would most definitely become a Weyrling!

Possibly, subconsciously, such a dragon would Impress to Fel specifically because she would broaden its horizons, just as some dragons did for loner humans. That was how it worked: rider and dragon made each other better, so that they were the best they could be when Threadfall came. Or so Atenna had learned since coming to the Weyr.
Atenna had enough confidence for her! She'd have at least one friend out in the stands specifically cheering her on, and that had to help, right? "I believed them," she said with a grin. "But I never expected to be part of it. Riding was never my dream, and it surprised me to be assigned to a Weyr - they need really good people here." Devastation among the flocks and herds meant devastation among the dragons, and especially in times of Threadfall, it was vital that they be protected. Atenna was honored to be a part of that. "Not everyone gets that chance; you're lucky, and I know someday you'll make a brilliant dragonrider."
She finished up with the last of the runners and went to coax Verity back into her arms, grinning at the girl. "Sorry, I wish I could stay and chat longer, but I've other things to do. I hate to leave you here alone..." Was she really alone, though, with all the animals watching her? They couldn't carry on a conversation, but Atenna had always found them good company regardless.

Fel wondered how it would have felt for some of the children raised in the Weyr to never impress something. She knew that there were a number of them who were almost pressured and expected to impress. She’d heard that there was a son of the Weyrleaders somewhere and could only imagine some of the pressure he would have to impress. She didn’t personally set much store by colour or anything but the pinks sure were pretty.
She looked up at Atenna and nodded. She would hold the herder to that promise. Indeed, she would search for the woman in the stands when she arrived. It would be wonderful to have someone there to cheer for her. Especially when she knew her parents probably wouldn’t be able to come to watch her. She wasn’t so sure she’d want them there. She knew how much candidates needed to concentrate on the hatching. “Well, I’m glad you were assigned here because we were able to meet!”
Fel smiled and nodded understandingly when Atenna said she had other chores to complete. Fel knew exactly what she meant. She had barely even finished with some of the stalls and she would only have a short while left before she had to move off to the kitchens. “I know. I will see you at the hatching if not before that!” Fel replied excitedly.
She finished off her current stall and moved to another intending to get them finished as quickly as possible.
