When he saw Teri enter the Sands a little bit after him, Tak couldn't help feeling bad. He had forgotten about him in his excitement. But he was here now and that's what counted.
When his roommate took the spot nearest him, he gave Teri a light pat on the back. "Glad you made it in time." The first egg hatched, and as it did he felt Teri grab his hand. He gave him a squeeze back, just as nervous as the other.
One after another, eggs began hatching. The green one wasted little time and went straight towards the girls. "One down, five to go." He murmured that more to himself than to Teriss.
He watched as yet another dragonet hatched. The purple worked his way out and began romping around when he was free.
Tak stared intently at the purple. Quite a bundle of energy isn't he? Cloud, picking up on the thought, watched from his spot. He laughed at the purple's antics. It appeared as though the purple was playing with the blue, at least to him, anyways. When the blue was shoved aside just to let the pink pass, he laughed again. This Hatching had already turned into a memorable one.
Cloud was also watching him with interest. What was that little big one doing? He certainly wasn't acting like the other little big ones. The flitt would've pondered further, had the pink not Impress at that moment.
Tak had calmed himself down by the time the blue started looking amongst the boys. When he stopped infront of Tak, the boy felt himself get hot. As the blue continued down the line, he allowed himself to breathe again.
He was so focused on the blue, he didn't see the purple barreling towards him until it was too late to move. Immediately, he got ready to push Teri out of the way incase the purple looked like he would collide with his closest friend.
Fortunately, it didn't appear to be so. The purple came so close that Tak knew collision was immenent. At the last second, the purple whipped around him missing both Tak and, thankfully, Teri.
He was more suprised, though, when the purple was still there. You know, T'von, I don't think that blue knows what he's doing. Tak's response was a hanging jaw. Did he just get called T'von? He even told me he had no idea which boy he wanted. How curious! Oh, yes, and my name is Moruluth. It is the biggest pleasure to meet you! Haha!
Tak--T'von dropped to his knees. It was only then he realized that he was still holding Teriss's hand. Poor boy probably had the life squeezed out of his fingers. Reluctantly, he let them go. "Teri," he looked at the boy, "this lovely, beautiful purple is named Moruluth." And that made his friend the first one to know his dragon's name besides himself and Cloud.
Speaking of Cloud, the flitt had been watching the blue after Landorith Impressed. The blue came close to His, but did not stay. Cloud cheeped angrily in the blue's direction. How could His not be good enough? His was His after all, and there was plenty good in that. He had half a mind to swoop at the blue, when he felt another. Was it the blue? No, that stupid thing was still looking. And it wasn't Other because it didn't feel like Other
It didn't take long for the young firelizard to figure it out. Chirping happily that His had found a big one, he flew to get a better look.
Scratching Moruluth's eyelids, a flash of black caught his eye. "Ah, heres the little bugger! I was just about to call you down!" So this is Raincloud? He's beautiful! Even if he's only one color! "Yes, he indeed is. Well, I know your hungry. I'm just surprised you haven't mentioned it yet." Cloud puffed up a bit with pride at the compliment. His's big one was right. And if it was His's big one, that must make it Cloud's big one, too! He crooned to the purple, landed on his back, and dared anyone to take Moruluth.
Standing back up, he brushed the sand off of his robes. Oh, indeed I am! I was just soooo happy to meet you that I forgot about it. T'von himself forgot how his arms had been hurting. "Well then, lets get some food into that belly of yours." Turning back, he looked at Teriss. If he didn't Impress, T'von knew what the first thing on his mind will be. "Teri, I wanna make sure you know this doesn't change our friendship." Giving his friend a pat on the back, he finally walked towards the entrance. "C'mon, Moruluth. Let's go find that food." He said it loud enough so the anxious crowd could at last hear his dragon's name.
Goodbye, Teri! I hope to really meet you soon! T'von obviously thought high of the boy, so he didn't mind chatting to him. He just had to inform him about it the only way he knew how. As they passed the blue, T'von laughed as a look was shared by both dragon and flitt. He continued laughing as he left the Grounds to feed his lifemate, the purple doing circles around him as they walked.

Yva's attention shifted through the throng of Candidates, both boys and girls, as she settled into place on the Sands. By Faranth, it was hotter than shells in here. She'd almost forgotten how warm it was, but look at that adorable little...green? Green, yes. Had to be.
She applauded along with the rest of the Candidates, and those who had come to watch from the stands, as she'd been taught in lessons - and because it was the nice thing to do.
Her cobalt-gray eyes caught movement from the boy's section, and she looked over towards Lex with a knitted brow. What on Pern was he...
Yva's gaze followed his, and it was then she spotted the girl lingering on the wall. She'd seen her at lessons, but never spoken to her or knew her name. Lex couldn't call to her, he was too far to keep from causing a stir, so it must have been a plot to get her to do it for him. Then again, it was most curious for someone to be clinging to the wall for dear life in such a fashion as that. She looked over, trying to get Rennin's attention without drawing any attention to either of them herself.
"Hey...hi there...come on, don't hide all the way over there, it'll be further for your Hatchling to walk if one of them is yours. That's not good for them at all, and plus you don't want to have to wait a second longer, do you? Come over here with me. Tan Naireth seems really mellow, I don't think she'll bite you, and Rider Samael seems nice, too. You can stand beside me if you want. Most of the others seem really friendly."
Yva gestured slightly for Rennin to come over to where she was standing, her eyes flicking back towards the Clutch.
"Hurry, you'll miss them. It's a better view from here, and I think Lexony was wanting to holler at you or something. It's kinda rude to hide like that, too. You don't want to offend the Clutchmother, do you?"
She tried to keep her voice down as much as she could. She'd been told about the no-talking rule, and the last thing she wanted to do was jeopardize her Standing; but this was important, and it didn't happen a lot. A Searchdragon had thought enough of this girl to bring her here, so she'd better believe that too!

L'ryn was starting to think that hatchings had to mandatorily happen after sunset. At least this hatching he didn't have to scramble to reach the sands, and was able to pull on pants and a tunic without scrambling in a bleary half-sleep like he had before his first (and only) time standing. When he stepped out to get a lift down from their weyr Helioth was already awake, his eyes spinning with excited colors and his mind alive with eagerness. ' Come. We must great these new dragons. ' was all the Viridian offered when L'ryn swung up, forgoing straps in favor of trusting Helioth somewhat unwisely if he trusted the overprotective advice of weyrlingmasters.
The pair were able to join the growing crowd without incident, Helioth hovering just long enough for L'ryn to drop to the ground with a firm thud before the dragon took his place amongst the rest of his kind on the ledges, to hum and watch as the eggs hatched. L'ryn found himself a place, not too near the front of the crowd to give any sense that he might be eager to see who impressed (he honestly wasn't familiar enough with any of the candidates for that), settling on a seat in the center of the stands. This hatching was worth watching, at least, being the first clutch on Pern out of a tan dragon.
Things were proceeding much as L'ryn remembered from his own time on the sands (though without any dragonets tormenting him, only Helioth's intense focus rumbling at the back of his mind through their link), with the first impression being made by a pale green. Then a pink and a purple impressed in quick succession. It was a good start, and without bloodshed as there had been before Helioth had found him lying on the sands short a sandal. He couldn't help but pray that Faranth looked over the hatchlings this time, and didn't let them come to blows the way they had then...

While the largest egg remained dormant, its last remaining neighbour was already partway to freedom. The tiny creature's path to victory, however, led her too close to the dormant egg. The green burst forth from her shell only to collide with her captive sibling's prison. She stumbled slightly, her dark, mossy hide shadowy in the night's dim light. She caught herself quickly enough, huffing at the offending egg. She refused to be embarrassed, though; she was better than that. There was nothing to be embarrassed about. There had been no way to foretell the misstep from the darkness of her egg. Head held high, she turned to face the rest of the new world.
As if reminded of hatching by the collision, the last and lonely egg made a valiant effort to break. It did, but not with any splendor that would have been befitting of an egg of its size. The top flaked off and tipped, spilling out a blob of a dragon, all limp limbs and wide eyes. It was surprised by its own step into the real world and responded with an endless stare of confusion. Its colour could have easily belonged to a brown, but the scarce few brain cells behind its gaze confirmed otherwise. A tan.
Not that the sixth tan born in all of Pern seemed to be excited about it. Perhaps she was - it was hard to tell. She was, at least, quite fixated in drinking in every visual detail about the cavern around her. Her stubby legs remained calmly splayed beneath her, her tail still curled about the intact half of her egg. The top of her was paler even than Mith, and the rest of her more to the yellow side of tan than her mother, but not so much as Demeth. She seemed of a middling appearance, but a whole new brand of daftness. She just continued to stare and was content with that.
Twice the green and she locked gazes, and the intelligent, smaller dragon seemed put off by the slowness of her sister. The green chirped, attempting to bring her out of her newly-hatched stupor. The tan hardly blinked. The green chirped again, and still there was no visible response. For all she knew, the tan could be ignoring her purposely, but the green suspected it was the fault of the creature's poor smarts. The green barked louder this time, and finally, the tan shook her head wildly, startled, and fixed her eyes on the green, who tried to initiate a respectable conversation on the worrisome behavior of her larger counterpart. The tan's eyes drifted, a glimmer of difficult thought in them, and then she had occupied herself with looking around again. The green snorted.
In the foreground, the blue had made his choice. He had truly made it right away, during his first round, but he had wanted to be certain. This was, of course, the boy with whom he was to spend the rest of his life. There had been a tugging in his little newborn chest when he passed the man by the first time, but he had muscled through it like the stubborn beast he was. For all he wanted to turn right around and claim His then and there, he needed to see what the others had to offer. It turned out to be very little. By the end of his second stomp around, his nose was wrinkling at the others. His summer blue presence had not changed them for the better in the time it took him to come around again.
His boy, however, had been exceptional both times. Chest puffed proudly, his strut betraying his certainty in his decision, the blue made for Lexony. He took the shortest path, pushing past other boys if he had to, and came to stand regally in front of the blonde-haired candidate - or, rather now, weyrling.
L'xon. He addressed his lifemate with a voice full of confidence. I am Halventh, and I am yours. I am also hungry. The blue's eyes slid smugly to the candidates left on either side of him and his man. He knew from the completeness that now swelled in his body that he and His would be great. They may not have been great in the eyes of everyone, but they would be great to each other.
Blue Halventh {779fd5} -- Halventh is stubborn, driven, and confident. Any task that is laid before him will get finished. Though his ego is quite large, he has no desire to be better than a blue can be and is content with his rank. He is also equipped with a vain streak, so frequent oiling and showing off is a must. The last of the eggs were hatching, the blue was left to find His. Saka kept her breath held, her eyes gleaming as she watched the hatching begin its ending. It was sort of like a dance, that's what crossed her mind. First the eggs would strike up the band, the humming song of dragons and flits. Then the cracking would overlay that, and finally the sounds of the dragonets themselves. Afterward, the dragonets danced around each other on the sands, playing a sort of game. It looked fun, she wanted to play too.
The candidate shuffled her feet, rocking on her heels before stopping for a moment. The largest egg seemed to be having trouble, the newly hatched green and blue too enveloped in each other to notice as much as the candidates. Or maybe it was just that the candidates were more aware of the hatching eggs than the dragonets were? Finally, the egg did hatch, and where many were expecting something like a yellow or brown, a tan came forth. Though, it did look a bit like both of those blended together.
Still, that very familiar look that all tans seemed to have was in her eyes, and Saka smiled. It was having a bit of trouble now wasn't it? Laughing slightly, but in a good humor sort of way, Saka teetered on her heels again. This was fun, it didn't even matter if she was left standing again, it was just nice to see all the dragonets playing!
Okay, okay....sooooo, that thing like, isn't a dragonet? The green tilted her head slightly, her jaw dropping a bit when Laelia nodded. "Yep. She's a firelizard. Oh look, another green. A tan hatched too." Laelia jerked her head slightly in the direction of the two female dragonets and smiled when Anibrith turned to watch. Oh, yes, yes! Is that what a green looks like? I thought they all looked like me...you know...like...me? Hmmr, I guess not...ummm... The dragonet trailed off, not sure what she was supposed to do or say.
That made her frustrated, even though the emotion and gathering the idea of what she was frustrated at took some work. She didn't like that she wasn't sure like her blue brother. I like blues..they....they're...de..depenindanable. Laelia shook her head, forcing the smile away from her lips. "Dependable you mean?" Anibrith snorted, shaking her wings out. That's what I said!!! Her weyrling reached out to scratch the eye-ridges. "Sure it was sweet one."
Looking from the sands to the stands, Anibrith made a soft crooning sound. So many colors, so many big things! Surely she'd grow to be like that, that's what she was meant to do after all...right? Oh, yes! She was sure that's what she was meant to do. Her gaze trailed over a few more blues then stopped on one in particular. It was more feminine in build than the others, with a slightly greenish hide. Oh! My Laelia, look at that blue! I like him, he's sooooo handsome. I bet he's smart just like my brother!
Laelia looked up to where the green was staring and covered her mouth to stifle the burst of laughter. "Sweetheart...that's a cyan." SO?!? "So, it's a she." ....oh........

There was so much already going on in the hatching. Just... it seemed that everywhere he turned something else was about to happen. Sure, the last time he stood there had been more eggs hatching, but this one just seemed to have more concentrated energy. There were such few eggs that all the candidates were just... focused on them. As one impressed, it just heightened everything. When another impressed, he thought for sure that someone was going to pass out from the sheer emotional roller coaster, he thought that it was possible that he might be that person. Maybe he just... maybe he was too... it was scary. Alright? That was simply it. It was terrifying to stand on the sands, to watch the eggs hatch, hope that one dragon might call out to you, that your other half was there, within the shells. It was horrifying to think of being left all alone, but... well, he was simple, but even he could see that there were much less eggs than there were candidates. Not everyone would impress, it was... just something that happened. Teriss was still scared though.
But he had a saving grace, and that was Tak. That hand felt like an anchor, holding Teri in the moment, making sure he didn't drift off into nothingness, making sure he didn't faint dead away. Had anyone ever simply fainted while they were standing? There were a lot of emotions, it was intense! He'd seen people pass out in the kitchen, he'd himself done it out of sheer exhaustion once, but that had been with heat everywhere, and just... it wasn't the same.
Hearing Tak whisper, he gave his hand a little squeeze. His friend was fantastic, and if a dragon couldn't see that... well... they must be blind. Looking at the hatched purple, a sub-king, right? He had seen one, but only from a distance, since he had gotten at Dalibor. He was sure there was more, just that he had only seen one. They were quite pretty, weren't they. He watched as the purple played with and pushed his blue brother, letting that sweet pink pass to go off to impress. He liked that. He liked when dragons were nice. Every moment he stood on the sands, he remembered horror stories about maulings. He remembered the scars on his fathers leg from a mauling incident. Teriss' mother had remained scar free, but she had seen her own share, and had been quick to tell him about them.
Watching the blue with big eyes as he started to examine the dragons, he felt his breath catching, but the blue went pass him, Teri didn't even feel a mental brush. The blue was not for him, and he was not for the blue, and with a frown he saw that neither was his friend destined to be a rider of that color. His eyes flicked up, and that's when he saw the purple running towards the boys. Actually, he was sure that it was making a straight gallop right towards Tak. For some reason, he just... he knew it. He felt it in his chest that Tak was finding his other half.
His gut instinct was confirmed when Tak squeezed his hand, and he could feel the creak of bones. When his friend dropped to the sands, Teri looked like he had turned into a see-saw for a moment, and was trying his hardest not to fall face first onto the heated sands, that would be graceful. But his hands was let go of, and he knew. He knew that Tak was gone, replaced by a newly impressed, one day rider. When he heard his name, he was nodding, and couldn't stop his clapping. He even knew the honour of being told the newly hatched dragons name... he was so... over the moon happy for his friend, and he watched him. Not able to hide the smile. Nodding, he whispered out "congratulations." He didn't want to be loud, but... but he had to congratulate his friend.
The words about friendship, he just nodded, smiling, and turned back to look at the eggs, not understanding why the remaining eggs were so blurry until he blinked and tears started rolling down his face. He sniffled a little when he heard the newly impressed Moruluth talk to him, he felt blown away by that, and tried to think good thoughts back, but didn't know if it worked that way. He didn't see them walk off the sands, probably couldn't right now.
He couldn't stop the tears, and he really hoped that people didn't think it was just him being selfish over not yet impressing a dragon. No doubt, he was being selfish, but... but... even with the new T'von's words, he knew that their friendship was going to change. How could it not, if Teri didn't impress? He'd be off doing new weyrlings lessons, off to a different room, hanging out with his fellow weyrlings. Teri would... would have to have a new roommate, and... they would just drift. It was all... his parents had told him all of it.
Wiping at his eyes, he felt absolutely horrid for crying, for being so selfish. This was the best day of his friends life, he wanted to be happy for him, so he smiled, he smiled and watched as the blue impressed to a boy. Then he watched the last two eggs hatch through blurry eyes. Wiping his eyes, he had to a couple times before he saw the unfocused tan that had broken free of her shell, and the adorable little green conversing with her. Shifting a little bit, he moved more towards the center of the other boys, feeling vulnerable on the edge.

Halventh. Halventh the strong. The name itself was a bipartite wall of sturdy vowels and the towers of scripted l's and t's. Ending on the same note it started, reassured. The question was had L'xon gifted a name to his remaining confidence, and that name had gone to the hatchling, or had the Blue taken all of this effort upon himself alone? His fingers wrapped over Halventh's dry head, coursing around the brims of the eye sockets and pressing to the bumps of fangs tangible beneath the film of dragonhide that already guarded Halventh's jaw from the elements. The Blue had none of L'xon's discomfort as he stood bare-footed on the Sands. His wings still wet and shining were extended around him, and when L'xon seized at one- greedy like a child for the first time since distant childhood -he found it leathery rather than soft. Halventh remained passive while L'xon toyed with the spars, tugging them apart. He did sneak his unsnatched wing around the blond's side, though, hooking his thumb against the ex-guard's white robes.
L'xon almost fell over backwards when he looked over his shoulder and found the gesture of appreciation clinging there. When he peered back at Halventh's face, the dragonet adjusted his reptilian head from side to side, an imitation of human gesture he had absorbed from his bonded. That was the other immediate change: the thoughts hugging his, never parted, even on that very first difference of opinion. He was one of the changed men now. And his Halventh, standing only to his hip, had perfection written all over his future.
"Perfect," he says, Halventh responded. Talked to him! The spectrums in the Blue's eyes fixed on L'xon pointedly for all this surprise, and then the hatchling looked over his own small back, and the unfilled string of his tail. L'xon's curious touches were not enough to bother his wings, but Halventh knew how easily they could break at this stage. Well, he sighed as he turned his head back to the gawking human. We will get there. L'xon sensed this modesty was shared only with him, and grinned with sudden enthusiasm. Halventh mimicked the expression almost immediately, and the two of them stood there gazing with fond toothiness at each other.
"Food, right," L'xon said, snapping to sudden memory of his purpose in this partnership.
Right. Halventh's affirmation was clipped, expectant. L'xon started a gawky turn toward the feeding pit, as if he had forgotten how his legs worked. Meanwhile Halventh had discovered just how he could get his wings to tuck in over his back in an orderly blue cloak. With that detail under wraps, he began sliding after L'xon, and soon outpaced him. The dragon moved like a dragon, L'xon thought ridiculously. Halventh's head wove back and forth at the end of his neck, panning the crowd and the remaining hatchlings alike. His tail wrote corresponding S's in the sands, his foreclaws always grasping ahead, pulling him to his destination more than walking. The slight mystery of that alien gait, conducted with forepaws not terribly different from human hands, fascinated L'xon. This was a beast of dreams, as if the starry sleeping blue of his skin had not been evidence already.
Halventh slithered a little faster as they passed Purple Moruluth, L'xon now wise enough to jog to keep up with him. The Blue beelined for a drudge carrying a fresh meat-bucket up to its designated well. The dragonet was so fast onto just his hind feet that L'xon was briefly reminded of the mauling dangers the Candidatemasters had explained to them. The Blue blasted the drudge away with a piercing shriek, wings blooming at his sides to double his size. When she fled, he grabbed a hunk of red flesh from the overturned bucket she left behind and began gulping it down.
L'xon felt no impetus to reprimand the newborn, like he was some sort of mutt. He had not meant any harm to the drudge, and she should have seen him coming. Or...was that Halventh's thought? The dragonet's eyes were no longer shining, and the testable separation between his mind and L'xon's was no longer present. L'xon concentrated on differentiating them anyway, and after a time he no longer tasted the raw herdbeast in his mouth, even if his heart still beat at a dragon's pace and his wings still mantled unnervingly where he had no such appendages. No wonder dragonriders had such trouble with egos. No wonder ignorant holdlings like himself saw them inhuman.
But this need for focusing on himself to maintain himself-- that could be just as natural. Maybe even more appreciable than simply giving in to the little beast all the time. Each of them could maintain their individuality. Halventh liked that. Indeed it was I that scorned the precious drudge, he crooned, since such certainty seemed like a suitable reward for his thoughtful L'xon. The young man pulled his hand away from his forehead, where he had been resting it in a fruitless attempt to soothe his thoughts. He crouched down to help Halventh, but the hatchling had been avoiding gorging quite well on his own.
You are very opinionated for an infant, L'xon suggested before he had even contemplated enough to confuse himself on how to communicate with the tiny Blue, and before he considered how wise sharing such a judgment was.
Opinionated? Halventh took a moment to digest the word, and to moderate his tone to something appropriately incensed. Am I? You think so? He eyed L'xon while taking a more ponderous chew of his current meat slab. He shook out the threads of flesh, then raised his monstrous head as high as it could reach. In such a pose he started to turn around and shuffle at the other Candidates. Perhaps I ought choose another then. L'xon, a man possessed by the intensity of his new acquaintance, leapt after the rogue hatchling and tackled him to the Sands, arms crossed around his gangly neck. Halventh was flattened to ground with a honk. He shifted the meat around in his mouth and swallowed it, licking his lips clean afterwards. He had not been half as surprised at the pinning as he was by the amount of distress his jest caused his rider, and crooned up at him soothingly till L'xon let go.
Halventh climbed back onto his feet, shaking himself from shoulders to tail-tip before he turned around and regarded the blond. That is not the way it works, you ridiculous creature, the Blue purred, brushing the side of his body against L'xon's leg as he sidled back to the overturned meat bucket. Wonderful creature, the dragonet added softly as he tucked into another piece of his first meal. L'xon settled down next to the Blue, looping an arm over his back. He looked over his shoulder at those left behind, though there were two yet to join the bloody rank at the feeding pit.
He could readily identify who he wanted those two to be, but what he wanted didn't really matter. Of course it matters, Halventh countered, again in that gentle, warm voice that sounded far beyond anything a baby should have offered. Dragon wisdom had always been something of a joke, for dragons did not remember much and thus how could they hope to match man's retrospect? But no one had told L'xon his dragon knew all the things that he did from birth. And probably more, for dragons certainly talked amongst themselves, perhaps even outside the range of their rider's ear. Even now Halventh sought out the voluminous pale shape of his mother, followed by the Iron heights of Poseith. What he was looking for, he did not say.

It wasn’t like Raksha to be late for anything. She knew that it was incredibly rude, and most certainly frowned upon. Even so, she was a tad late, straggling in with some of the others that had also not made it on time. The deep frown that lined her mouth made it pretty clear that she felt bad about it. The expression was odd to see on the consistently jovial face of the female candidate. Like a passing breeze, the frown faded once she was standing amongst the female candidate’s. The eggs were already rocking so there was really no point to go on up and disrupt Naireth! Instead she reached her arm way up over her head and performed a rather sloppy wave. A huge grin overtook her face, and her eyes were wide with excitement. The magical mood of the hatching had everyone on the edge of their seats. It didn’t have to be a large hatching to be an epic one! It was the first tan ever to have a clutch! Naireth should be oh so proud! She was oh so proud of her! She tried not to call out to the tan, seeming to have forgotten that she no longer needed to wave as she was.
When her arm finally dropped to her side she turned to Saia with a warm smile, for the girl was near. The eggs were rocking violently, the dragonets inside wanting to break free from their confines, as most dragonets often did! First to hatch was a green, a lovely green, and Raksha couldn’t help looking to her friend next to her, seeming to be contemplating if it’d be a good match-up or no. When the green instead impressed to another girl, one whom she didn’t personally know, yet had heard others call Laelia, she clapped in a congratulatory manner. The first impression, it was wonderful! Both her sketchpad and black flitt were not present. She’d decided they were unnecessary for the time-being, mostly because lately she’d found she could draw things rather nicely from recent memories. She preferred to enjoy the memory for what it was and take it in rather than have her head buried in her sketchpad. It still happened though, rather regularly. She just couldn’t help herself! Silly Raksha. And when it came to Rask, the little black really was just far too boisterous.
A pink and a purple hatched as well, and the young girl watched them with sheer intrigue. Seeming to have an unexpected spasm of joy, she reached out for Saia and wrapped her arms around the girl’s right arm, squeezing the captured limb rather tightly. ”Isn’t this just the best thing ever?” she whispered, not having bothered to look away from the dragonets milling their way around. They were a breathtaking sight. Naireth had really outdone herself. I wish I could hug them, she thought of the pink and purple, resisting the urge to talk in a baby voice to the blue that spilled onto the sands. He was lovely!
Both the purple and the blue made her think of Lexony, and therefore she looked over to the young man whom was on the opposite side with the rest of the young men. She secretly hoped he impressed, as she had for Sebolaren. He was a good person with a lot of heart. She truly felt that. She hadn’t quite released her grip on Saia’s arm, not seeming to notice the amount of pressure she was exerting. She was far too occupied.
And then the purple hatched, and went to the candidate she more recently recognized from Delilah’s birthingday. It was an interesting match-up, and she watched them walk off of the sands together. They seemed happy, which gave her more warm and fuzzy feelings. Being surrounded by so many girls at present, she didn’t mind seeming a tad girly, or even emotional. It was an emotional event, who could blame her? And then it happened. The blue that had wandered over to the boys chose Lexony. She held her breath, her cheeks puffing out a bit. She didn’t want to cry! It’d be silly to cry! Though they would be tears of joy, so perhaps no one would comment. She heaved a sigh of relief, her gaze lingering on the new bluerider pair for a moment before her gaze transfixed on a green that had made its way into the world. The larger egg that seemed to have quieted concerned her. What if that was the tan she thought it might be, and now Naireth couldn’t see her tan baby enter the world? No, it had to hatch! The first tan had to have a tan!
And, just as she seemed to be pushing her fears out into the atmosphere, the tan burst free from its shell. She sighed again at seeing the confirmation of the tan form now peering around. It seemed not frightened, but rather unsure. Samael definitely had a part in all of this too, and Raksha admired the tanrider pair from afar. Goodness, all the eggs had hatched, and there would be a new subqeenrider today. The little green was adorable, and Raksha decided that either the green or the tan would be a suitable partner for her Saia!

Yva's eyebrows shot up when the Blue strutted over and sat down in front of Lex. Could it be? IT COULD!
She applauded so hard her hands hurt, but she'd save the cheering and more vocal stuff for later, after all the Dragonets had Impressed. At least she hoped. That new Tan that had hatched had her worried. The fact the little dragonet wasn't responding to her Green sister had her exceptionally worried. Oh no.
When she finally moved, the look of relief that passed over Yva's features was almost tangible. She looked back towards Rennin, but eventually just turned her full attention back to the remaining two Dragonets. She didn't care if she Impressed - she just wanted them to find their lifemates among those present. It being the first Tan clutch of Pern, she didn't want the reports to other Weyrs to have the line "and x number of betweens" in it. Faranth knew there'd been enough betweening the first day of Threadfall.
Yva's slow, soft exhale surfaced quietly, relieved that all the eggs had hatched, at least. Now it was time to wait it out. See who the Green and Tan chose as Theirs.
She silently willed the other two onwards, and wished the rest of the Candidates good luck. There were a number of them that, while she didn't directly know them, she'd seen them in passing and they seemed nice enough to her. She'd only begun to break out of her shell, so to speak, and get to know some of them.

Trying to feed Moruluth was......harder than T'von expected. Every time he gave him a morsel, he would take it and run around with wild abandon, stopping only for another morsel, or when he passed what he felt was a little bit too close to the ladies.
At the third return, T'von waited before handing his dragon another scrap. "Love, you need to calm yourself. I don't want you choking our first day together." But Mine! I'm just sooo excited! I want to run on forever and ever! He did pause long enough, though to get down a few pieces before darting off again.
Smiling after him, T'von couldn't help wondering if he would grow out of this, or will he stay this excited forever. Not that it was a bad thing. Coming back around, his purple was panting heavily, and it could be heard through his voice. That....was so.....much fun....but my legs.....are hurting....I think.....I will....take a rest
Moruluth sat and opened his mouth for more meat, which was quickly given to him. "I'm suprised you didn't tire out sooner! You must have ran several lengths!" But you must admit.....that you enjoyed watching........as much as I did doing Mor countered, already slightly recovered. "....Well, yeah, you're right."
Swiveling his head, Mor set his whirling eyes on the blue. It's about time! I thought he would never Impress! I still don't know why he passed you up, Mine. "But if he didn't, you wouldn't be able to Impress me," he reminded the dragon, scratching his eyes.
Ooohh, look T'vonMine! The others are coming out! It's another green! And a tan! I can't wait to meet them! He then darted off again, leaving his rider debating whether to continue watching the Hatching, or his dragon.

Of course it was the best thing ever, and Saia beamed at Raksha, then at Aylina. Surrounded by friends, standing for her third hatching...what more could a girl ever ask for? Even if she didn't Impress, it looked like, once the tan finally arrived on the scene, six others would. Six people she counted friends, because she didn't have any enemies among the Candidates, even those she didn't really know, who would join the ranks of Pern's heroes...it was amazing just to be a part of it, and she didn't view the remaining dragonets with an eye toward whether they might be hers, but rather with generalised fondness. Well, and a deep appreciation for their colours. Even the tan was beautiful.
As the green tried to get the tan to respond, Saia glanced over at the boys and watched as the blue finally chose His - Lexony! Apart from one of her girls, he was the one she'd wanted to Impress most, and he had! And that blue was as beautiful as the summer day they'd just had, their last as Candidates together! She clapped in excitement and called, "Congratulations, Lex!"
Only two dragonets left. The green might choose any one of them, of course; it was highly unlikely - though not impossible - that the tan would pick a boy, although anything could happen! Since the tan seemed unwilling to move and the green hadn't approached yet, Saia risked a glance at the stands, but even Q'sis's large, unmistakable form wasn't visible from down here. Nor did she see the great bulk of Unath, strangely camoflaged by bright pink hide. He'd be happy to welcome a new tanrider to Pern, whoever it was.
That is, if the tan Impressed. Six hatchlings did not necessarily mean six weyrlings, she recalled, and watched the tan with mild - very mild, as it was Saia - anxiety. What if she never moved and eventually went between? What was she looking at? Something amazing, probably. Most things were amazing.
Well, at least the green seemed to know what was going on.

Lexony’s, and then Yvonnaei’s motions at her did not go unnoticed by Rennin, but the painter was too enthralled by the hatchlings in all their speckled, colorful glory to do much about it. Each one was a work of art – the greens, the blue, the pink, the purple… and the tan too. Six eggs, all viable, and a sub-queen. There was beauty in that, too – the first clutch out of a Tan, and no fatalities yet.
Rennin had an ulterior motive for lurking near the wall, other than just a general unease with being out in the midst of the girls – she was both still technically in the line in her current spot, and she had an amazing view of the hatching in general. As dragon after dragon selected their new partners and moved off the sand, Rennin’s fingers itched for her paints.
Each dragon was categorized in her mind by which colors she’d need to mix to get their shading right, their patterns being memorized for later reproduction. So too where the faces of those they Impressed to – the rest of the crowd could be faceless masses, but with this small a hatching Rennin was confident in her ability to remember which human face went to which dragon.
Rennin didn’t think she’d be sleeping tonight, at least not until after she’d gotten a rough outline done. She even knew which wall down in the depths of the Weyr she was going to paint this scene on.
It took her a long, long moment to realize that the face that the blue chose, the one now looking into that rainbow hued gaze, was one she knew. She clapped, a little belatedly, but not enough to stand out, and now, finally, sidled across the Sands, coming up behind the girl Lexony had gotten to call to her. She touched Yvonnaei quickly and gently on the elbow to let her know someone was behind her, but her gaze was still focused on Lexony and Halventh.
She had a piece of slate stashed away that would be a good size, and Lexony was as close to being a friend as Rennin ever got – maybe she could put the work on the wall scene off long enough to capture the look that had been on his face at the moment of Impression. She thought he might appreciate it.
Only after they’d left the Sands did Rennin turn back to watch the rest of the Hatching.

In truth, the tan wasn't distracted, nor was she ignoring the green. She was perfectly aware of the green's presence. She was perfectly of everything, for that matter. Very little escaped the gaze of her wide, swirling eyes. Indeed it dwarfed the rest of her senses. She had only just hatched, but already she favoured sight over hearing, over taste and smell and touch. When the green calmly, loftily circled around to face her, the tan noticed. It didn't, however, occur to her at all to respond. She examined the dark ceiling instead.
There was still a notable distance between the green and the tan, in more ways than one. The green, however, expected far more from her sister. She found it strange that she should be related to a dragon that would neglect the most basic of newborn instincts: to Impress. The green, then, realized her fault. She expected the same level of excellence she possessed from all others. It was only logical that one would strive to be the best. Her blue brother, from what she had seen, had been doing a fine job. Even her dull mother stood tall and noble, but this tan was not acting on anything. She was just staring, and the green was frustrated.
She would have left the tan to fend for herself, but she felt an awful familial responsibility to her sister. She was also unimpressed by the blatant lack of response. In a last ditch effort to obtain the reply she thought she deserved, she flared her deep green wings and let out a sharp bark. 'Hello! Get moving!,' she seemed to say. The tan was startled to the point of jumping and looked wildly at the green. More suggestions - though they were more like orders - were issued from the greens mouth. Tentatively, the tan got to her little feet and started forward.
Her eyes, now, moved between the grains of sand below her, the rows of candidates ahead, and the heat waves that undulated in front of the cooler stands. She had easily memorized the appearances of the girls for the duration of her short dragon memory. The girls appealed to her more than the boys. She couldn't say why, but didn't bother wondering. She didn't bother analyzing their minds, either. They all looked nice, at least, and that was all her little head fretted about.
The green was content with her tan sister's movement and left her be. She put faith - and she hoped not wrongly so - in the tan in that she would continued to walk towards the candidates and find Hers among them. The green, of course, had known that Hers was among the crowd from the moment she hatched. There had been a tantalizing willpower mixed in with those minds, and she was quick to find which girl it was. Which woman, rather, for hers was hardly a child. Head held high, steps cool and collected, the mossy dragonet found her way across the searing sand to her partner for life. She bowed her head, respectful of the excellence that rivaled her own.
Ah, Yvonnaei, she said when her eyes had lifted. My name is Emiritath. I... well. Emiritath trailed off and shook her spine in a shruglike motion. She rubbed her fine, tapered head against her girl's legs, rumbling with pleasure. Then, her eyes assumed the customary hungry orange-red, which spoke for itself.
Green Emiritath {6f7b50} -- Emiritath carries herself loftily and conducts herself with logic. She fancies herself incredibly responsible, and often feels the need to be responsible for more than she ought to handle. She is confident in the excellence of her and Hers, and automatically assumes that others are the same way. What does 'excellence' even mean to her? It depends on what she feels like. She is a green, after all, and isn't immune to rash moodiness.
Then, the tan was on her own. Waiting for her to reach the candidates seemed to take an eternity. She just had more interesting things to focus on. If she moved too fast, she might have missed something interesting to see. She knew that there were hordes of people and dragons watching her every mood, but she did not know that she was holding them up. They were on the edges of their seats in anticipation, but the tan didn't understand at first. It took her some time, but eventually, it got through her head that she should hurry up. She did so suddenly, with a startled lurch and a gasp that was almost apologetic. She waddled as fast as she could, wings extended for stability.
She would have liked to take a longer look at the girls as she passed them quickly by. They all looked just as nice close-up as they did far away, but oddly enough, she didn't feel like she wanted to see them for very much longer. Or be around them, she supposed, because she wasn't sure if she was being put off by their minds or not. She just knew that it couldn't be them. It couldn't be Rennin, Raksha, Saia or Sakalas, but suddenly, the tan stopped.
It could be Aylina. It was Aylina. The tan just felt like looking at her pretty face and pretty pale hair forever. She also wanted to curl up around her and feel her pretty, warm mind. The tan attached herself to Aylina's legs and let out a hoarse croon.
I'm... Wenth. You are AylinaMine... Her voice trailed off as her eyes wandered. F-food?
Tan Wenth {c9b588} -- Wenth uses her eyes a lot. Everything else? Not so much. Generally, she knows what's going on. She's incredibly observant. If something moves, Wenth sees it. What she doesn't excel at, however, is reading into said movements. She rarely wonders why something happens. She is also quite slow to respond since she's usually caught up in looking around. She isn't always listening, so it can be tricky to reach her. Pern to Wenth? Hello? ...Hello? Wenth? Oh, there you are.
And with the last of the dragonets safely Impressed to those who they would never leave, applause erupted from the spectators. Samael beamed, a grin on her face wider than anything she had ever displayed before. She threw herself against Naireth's leg, clapping it in congratulations. The mother tan was largely indifferent to the end of the Hatching. In fact, she was more relieved than anything, though the emotion was hard to detect, because she no longer had to wait on the fragile eggs. She was free to return to sitting in her weyr with her Samael and to sunning by the summer lake. Naireth snorted and, as soon as Samael had detached herself to meet up with Q'sis, spread her wings and took flight from her five-sevenday surrogate home.
Hearty congratulations ensued all around despite the late hour, and when people began to filter back to their beds, the Junior Weyrleader R'len bespoke the whole Weyr through Kaezeth. Dalibor! The headwoman has given word that there will be a celebratory breakfast at dawn, considering the time of the hatching, to spice things up. We look forward to seeing you there. Good night, and sleep tight. --- The following morning was one of pancakes, breakfast tubers, bacon, fruit salads and mountains of pies and pastries. "Please, do give a round of applause to the brand new weyrlings: the Firefinders!" R'len said, early-morning bags under his twinkling eyes and a mug of klah in his hand. "And to our new weyrlingmaster, Catori of green Koketeth! Firefinders, we salute you. Welcome to the world of dragonriders."-fin- [/blockquote]

Seta nodded, pleased that Lexony had Impressed, and returned to the final two who'd hatched; a green and the sixth tan born to the Weyr. ...I wonder if this'll be a regular occurance when a tan Clutches? He thought to himself, shifting his weight to the other foot as he watched the little dragons interact. Bossy little green, he thought with a slight smile. The tan... was a little worrisome, as it didn't seem all that interested in Impressing- which meant the possibility of it going Between was a little too high for him to feel completely comfortable.
Appaently with the wing flare and the barking, the little Tan took heed of whatever it was that'd been saiud and began heading for the girls. He chuckled softly under his breath, something in his gut telling him that this Hatching would not be for him either- and quietly relaxed his posture. He was no longer having to worry about being 'impressive', if one didn't mind the pun, and could enjoy the rest of the evening in peace. His attention sharpened considerably when the little green paused in front of Yvonnaei- and the eyes whirred to confirm the Green's choice. He applauded immediately on that one, very proud of the young woman for being chosen after having a bit of conversation with her on occasion, and the encounter in the dining hall. Nothing to worry about now, Seta thought as he watched the two newly partnered interact. you'll meet plenty of people from now on.
A gasp from his right caught his attention, his grey eyes quickly leaving the form of the girl he knew to find one of the tallest girls staring down at the little tan. Seta kicked himself for not paying close enough attention and watched the interaction closely, pleased that another had seemed to meet their match. As he'd thought; this Hatching wasn't for him, and wasn't for several others- but there would be another Hatching, and another opportunity to find the partner who's soul would resonate and bond with his.
**
That pretty lil' blue'd Impressed, and looked to be a damned good match too on top of it, Aylina thought and beamed. I think I can come t'like these Hatchings; they're awful fun. Everyone was in that good, if a little anxious mood that was like someone havin' a kid of their own. Her eyes followed the spat between siblings... or the one sided one, anyways, the little green was certainly full of opinion and knew what she was doin', that was for sure. One of the female candidates, Yvonnaei, was chosen by the opinonated green and everythin' was left down to the little tan who'd seemed more interested in her surroundings than doin' anything in a hurry.
Little one probably doesn't wanna make a bad move, got lots of thinkin' to do. She thought to herself and just smiled, distracted by the commotion and going-ons of the rest of the Candidates and newly chosen. Yes... makin' the right move definitely took some time, and thinkin'. Heck, she'd taken more than her fair share of time thinking about things that probably worth spending all that much time about in order to make a decision, but that was besides the point; fact of the matter was that she would definitely make the decision right for her, and no one else.
Her distraction was quickly cut short, as a voice in her mind and a presence was rather too important to ignore. Brown eyes widened in shock, an audible gasp escaping as she stared rather... dumbly down at the little tan. Her little tan. Wenth. "I... uh... I wha...huh?" Aylina stammered, her throat feeling oddly thick as her legs, even with baby dragon leaning against her, felt like they were about to give out on her and shook a little in warning. Swallowing hard against the lump in her throat as she knelt down and, with a tenderness and caution born from worrying about being unable to control her own strength, shakily stroked the soft, pale hide.
...Wenth... you're... you're my Wenth? Surprise wasn't even beginning to describe what she felt, couldn't begin to even scrape the top layer of the complex series of emotions in her heart and making her brain all fuzzy and spider webby. There was a presence there that hadn't been before, a feeling of never being alone again that made her dizzy with relief and joy. Hm... hm? Ah, yes... AylinaMine, I'm... WenthYours... food...maybe? Her head kept moving, little by little, taking in everything around her. It was difficult to think on an empty stomach... she thought, anyway. But there was still so much to see and examine...
"Y-Yeah, let's get y'fed." Aylina managed, a little gruff from the tears that'd managed to fall. Happy ones, but they were tears nonetheless. She'd done it. Despite the doubts, she'd done it, and now she wouldn't feel so sharding sad about bein' away from her family. Won't they be surprised when they see her? A flush appeared on her cheeks as the two slowly made their way toward the buckets of meat.
So what if she was a little... on the slow to respond side? They'd just go at their own pace; wasn't a need to hurry 'less it was Thread fightin' time, and then they'd work it out from there. Whatever happened, Aylina thought to herself with a smile down at her new companion, they'd go through with it together.

Yva smiled broadly at Rennin as she approached, nodding approvingly as she shifted to lean back on her other foot. By first egg, these sands were -hot-. She wiped a bit of sweat from her forehead, blowing a few strands of hair from her eyes. It only first occurred to her that she probably looked a mess, but then again being woken from a dead sleep tended to do that. Some of the other Standing Candidates were freshly-woken, too. To be honest, the candlemarks were pretty late.
She stifled a yawn, doing so into her hand before blinking back the lingering haze. Good gracious.
The antics of the Green and Tan made her smirk. That Green was a handful, looked like. Bossy. Wasn't going to be any mess while she was around, that was for sure. Yva grinned a bit more broadly, but she did her best to maintain some degree of seriousness. There were only two Dragonets left; both seemed to eventually beeline for the girls, but there were more than two of them left here, herself included. There was no bets that she'd be one of the pair to Im-
Ah, Yvonnaei. My name is Emiritath. I... well...
Yva's blue-gray eyes had watched the little Green stride so assuredly over to the group, but the fact that the Dragonet had sat down before her hadn't registered. Not until there was the presence in her thoughts; an odd binding of minds that left Yva more than a little uncertain. For the first time in her life, she was not only speechless, but left motionless where she stood. Not a muscle, not a hair moved. She simply stared down at Emiritath with a somewhat confused look of disbelief. Emiri sighed, picking up one paw to look idly at her claws as her eyes whirled the steady red-orange. Hers was so stunned. Of course she was. Excellence was hard -not- to be stunned at, but Hers was just as glorious. She would simply have to be patient. It wasn't easy on Hers, after all.
MineOwn...do not make me have to be so direct with you as with my Tan sister, hmm? Come now. I hunger, we should see about feeding me, yes?
That voice. In her thoughts. It was unlike anything she'd ever heard, like no bonding she'd ever had with any measure of runnerbeast, not even like the bond she shared with Sevonn. Sevonn. Her brother would be proud of her. So very proud. All this work they had done, all the things they'd been through...and now none of it mattered so much as this adorable little Green sitting here before her.
Emiritath...
Yva said the name a thousand times over in her head, before the Green reached up and laid a paw on her knee. The newly-Impressed Tillek Herder looked down with a set jaw and tears in her eyes, but said nothing more.
Why do you cry, MineOwn? Because you are so pretty, Emiri. I've waited for you my entire life, and never known it until just now. You are strange, YvaMine. Strange, but I like that. I am very hungry, can we eat now, please? We must show my brothers and sisters how to behave, shouldn't we? How to be proper, like us. Do not cry, Mine. I am not going anywhere.
Yva reached down, and literally picked up the Green, hoisting her up against her chest and hugging her still-wet little self so tightly, sand transferring to the side of her face and into her hair, but Yva didn't care. She closed her eyes, reveling in this new tie to this little, perfect thing that she held. Emiri looked a little surprised, her eyes widening, before she put both paws on Hers' shoulders and crooned.
There, there, MineOwn. It is all right.
Yva wiped her eyes on her sleeve, carrying Emiritath against her as she headed towards the other Candidates; Emiri curled her tail around Yva's waist, crooning quietly at Hers - she looked over Yvonnaei's shoulder, observant as her Tan sister Impressed. A curt nod. That would do, after all. Now there was another to worry about her less-intelligent, but just as excellent sister. Her head craned up to look as her mother flew off, before Yva planted herself down on a bench and pulled several pieces of meat closer to her. Emiritath's attention was caught just as quickly to the food, and she uncoiled herself from Hers to sit on the floor before her. Her wings splayed outwards to dry a bit more, as Yva started to feed her.
Aren't my brothers and sisters a most excellent family, MineOwn? They are all so pretty. I am impressed. I picked the best one of all, though. We are all quite so, my little Emiri. We are all quite so.
