Had he known, Lyam might have left, but firelizards wouldn't take an hour's abandonment personally. Not all of them. Not...his, perhaps. The boy had to settle for reading over a few records on firelizard-raising as he waited for Suede to wake up from his nap. Apparently they didn't bond as deeply as dragons and could actually go wild if mistreated. Lyam didn't have to worry about that; he wasn't about to harm his Blue in any way. He only caused harm when it was necessary, and even so he always looked for a more peaceful approach first. He wasn't a heavy reader, so after skipping a page or so for every five he had to read, he was growing so bored that his own boredom distracted him from processing any of the information. It was simple but records have a way of complicating everything. There are whole books on how to brew klah, he'd bet.
Suede stirred, which caught Lyam's attention immediately. This could be another false hope, but this time it wasn't. The Blue blinked the sleep from his eyes and peered up at his mine sleepily. So it wasn't a dream after all. This one is rather insecure, isn't he? Staring after him like a concerned father. Suede could get used to it, if it lasted. He got up and stretched his wings, making it a point to project the image of another handful of meat to Lyam.
When the image projected, at first Lyam wondered its being there. Why would he suddenly think of a handful of meat? A passage from the records came to mind and he then understood. "Hungry again?" The Candidate also remembered something about young firelizards being heavy eaters. They needed it for growth. "I suppose I've got something for now, but it looks like we'll have to head for the kitchens." He reached into his robes were he had kept some dried meat. He picked it up on his way back to his room. As he held it out for the Blue, the creature sniffed at it before snatching a piece and eating it up voraciously, just as he had after hatching. He wasn't that picky. It was meat, dry or not. Suede was still hungry after what Lyam had offered him up, but he let the image of food slip away. Even he didn't want to overindulge. The firelizard had a brand new life to see through. The excitement made staying in one place daunting.
Then he made his first attempt to fly. His target had been his mine's shoulder, but the moment he took to the air he flew right into the boy's arm. His tiny claws gripped at whatever they could to prevent the Blue from falling, so he unintentionally scratched up Lyam's arm with his finite nails. Lyam tried to help him up realizing what the firelizard was probably up to and to prevent the Blue from falling. It took only a few seconds to get Suede perched on his shoulder again.
"Flight lessons are definitely in your future," Lyam said with a smirk. The scratches were stinging, but that was nothing a little numbweed couldn't subdue. "But I admire your spirit."
Suede stood boldly on Lyam's shoulder, as if pretending he did nothing wrong and that he had rather excelled. He was close enough to his target and he didn't fall. No wrong doing. Flight lessons? He didn't need no stinkin' flight lessons. As far as Suede was concerned, he was a flitter prodigy. He could learn to fly by failing and finding out what he had done wrong. In this case? Not enough take off space. He thinks...
"We should get moving so you can see more of the place. You were sleeping the whole way here." This time Lyam wasn't so tense with a firelizard hitching a ride on his shoulder. He could get used to it in time. Now he felt as if he had a bit of a sidekick. To make matters even better, Suede looked excited about the idea. The firelizard's eye color became bright as he sat up more diligently.
