It had been nearly an entire season since the amber pillie had taken her run. One wild suitor had won, leaving the other males to return to the lake or, in the case of brass Lord, to his Kesviry. There was speculation as to whether or not Iwa would lay eggs: pillies were a new discovery still and the few that were bonded to humans were the first generation. Mating and clutching habits were something to be studied on the fly. Three months after the amber's Run, and there still were no eggs... until a particular, calm evening.
The sun had almost disappear below the horizon, but not quite. A few rays still peeked over the edge of the Bowl, lighting the fringes of Dalibor up in a spectacular orange. Mirroring a very similar hue, amber Iwa crawled out from the shallows of the lake and staked out a section of soft sand. She pushed it around, seemingly preparing for something, and then there were eggs beneath her. Before the last egg had even been laid, the first was already hatching, letting out a tiny blue child. It stretched its feelers uncomfortably, unsure of what to do in this big wide world. He saw a pair of feet and sandals walking nearby and, eager for his confusion to be over, made a scurry for them.
Nadya, increasingly round and hungry, had slept poorly and was making her ungainly waddle across the bowl from her quarters to the kitchens. She craved breakfast with a fierceness that set a scowl on her face and made people leave her her space. At first, she tried to shake the pillie off her foot, but the creature held fast. "Shard it to the Red Star!" she snapped at it. A soft sound entered her mind. Srrrrr, purred the blue. But Nadya was too pregnant and too hungry to bother. She wrinkled her nose in disgust and carried on.
A boy caught her stomping toward the kitchens and gaped at her stowaway. "Is that a baby pillie?" E'rin gasped, feeling his full stomach squirm excitedly. For a second he felt ill, realizing he had eaten an extraordinary amount of food for a boy of his size... X'ni had frowned and called him a teenager.
"What's it to you?" Nadya snapped, shoving past him. She just wanted breakfast. None of this sharding pillie crap. E'rin, on the other hand, was elated, and ran back into the dining hall.
"Pillie hatching!" he shouted, and promptly took off again. He felt Jarith's excitement in his mind as she stirred awake from her nap. He ran as fast as his scrawny legs could go, tripped twice, but finally found Iwa and her little hatching clutch. Pillies! He was so excited!
NOTE: This takes place BEFORE the fire. Also, these pillie babies are going to those who already earned pillie eggs. Please specify which characters you wish to receive your pillies! And yes, I'm playing Nadya and Iwa by request. :') [/blockquote]

Until this particular evening, Daymar had been entirely unaware that there were creatures called pillies in the lake; willful ignorance, really. Not that he went in the lake anyway, for fear of drowning, but if he'd known the water bugs existed, he certainly would not have been down by the lakeshore, watching the sunset. From afar, it might have seemed he was daydreaming, but anyone close by would easily be able to see the way his eyes flicked about, ever-watchful.
Seeing the paranoid Candidate out and about was rare enough, but today he felt he had little choice. There was evidence that a firelizard had entered his room, and he had backpedaled so quickly he'd almost fallen over on seeing a dead tunnelsnake in the middle of the floor. So now he was staking out the entrance of the barracks from afar - quite afar - and awaiting his roommate's return from chores, so that he could get Sebol to get rid of it and check that the firelizard had gone. And did not return.
Therefore, he was in a prime position to see the...the thing crawl out of the lake not too far from where he primly sat. Daymar instantly froze, his eyes going wide, afraid to run lest that provoke an attack. Shards, what in the name of Faranth was that? And why...why was it laying eggs?
He mouthed a curse to himself and very slowly began a mad scramble to get away, horrified by one of them hatching and - to his panicky mind - instantly attacking a passing woman.
----
Although Saia hadn't yet managed to see a pillie, she took far more interest in Weyr affairs than her fellow Candidate, and she'd heard about them! Therefore, at E'rin's cry, the girl, just finishing up a meal in the dining hall, perked up. All her friends seemed to have firelizards, but this would be better than trading for an egg! This way she would have something special!
Pushing herself to her feet, she immediately sprinted off after him in hot pursuit, grinning widely. This was going to be amazing!
(OOC: I would like two for Daymar and one for Saia, please <3)

It was certainly a fairly decent evening and, without any chores to complete until morning or later that night, Yalenia had some time to go walking about the Weyr. She was wandering about the Weyr Bowl when she spotted a female Wherhandler walking towards the Dining Hall. She paused and studied the woman, sure that she was a Brownhandler. What was more, however, was that the woman seemed to have something attached to her foot. Yalenia tried to focus a little more and eventually made out the small shape of a bug. It was one of the creatures she had seen in the water upon her arrival here.
Despite what they were… They were kind of cute really. It looked rather young but perhaps she had merely guessed wrong. Then again, the wild ones she had spotted had been quite large in comparison to the blue she had just seen. She pushed it from her mind until she spotted a young boy running from the Dining Hall and towards the lake. Curiosity got the better of the Smith and she decided to follow the boy.
Reaching the banks of the lake she grinned when she saw the eggs laid in the sands. How sweet! There would be another hatching! She had only been to a few hatchings in her life and never had she attended either a firelizard hatching or… Um… Whatever these things were. She’d heard they were called Pillies but they were clearly native to the Western Continent for she had only ever seen them here.
Approaching the boy she had followed she smiled a greeting. She was more curious than anything else and didn’t know whether or not these things even impressed to humans or liked them. Shrugging her shoulders she decided it would be educational to stand and watch what was happening. If nothing else, it would give her some indication of what to expect in Dalibor for there were a great many things she was not used to in the Weyr.
The brownish coloured Pillie was obviously the mother and had laid a great amount of eggs. Yalenia assumed she was bonded to a member of the Weyr for she doubted whether any wild creature would like humans standing near her eggs. Even some bonded creatures hated people standing near their eggs.
ooc: One for Yal please ^^

Did dragons ever stop growing? Ever? Xiro'el knew that Tigreath wasn't anywhere near full-grown yet, but really -- she still crashed almost immediately after eating, and she slept deeply. He supposed that was a good thing, but on occasion the weyrling became a bit concerned as to whether she was supposed to or not. A lot of the other weyrlings' bondeds probably slept too, though... it was likely just a dragon thing. Eat, then sleep. That had to be it.
Because of this whole eat-then-sleep routine, the cyanrider was not in the company of his dragon as he loped across the Bowl. Lakeeti was in the barracks as well, and his only companion was Avsiran. The blue firelizard darted through the air alongside his human, dipping and diving as the pair drew nearer to their destination: the lake. Xiro had recently taken to sitting by the water, staring at it, when he wasn't running. Usually this was no problem.
Today, however, the trader almost immediately ran into trouble, of a sort: first, someone shouting about pillies hatching. He was still curious about those bugs, and he slowed, pacing up behind a half-familiar figure. Avsiran settled on his shoulder, and then Xiro reached the other man, halting for a moment to get a good look at his face. The features, and the sheer panic on his face... it could only be one person.
"You know that they're nowhere big enough to eat you, right, Daymar?"

Daymar was, unfortunately, in the wrong place at the wrong time... at least, in his eyes. To those who coveted pillies, he would have been deemed quite lucky indeed. Standing around was good enough for the human-seeking buglets, who hatched and stretched their feelers and looked around with their beady black eyes. People were beginning to show up and the hatching pillies would have plenty to choose from. There would be no shortage of pillies to go around - twenty eggs even had been laid there in the sand.
A tiny brown spilled from his egg and trundled off immediately, wandering this way and that. He didn't seem to have any clue what to do, any goal in like, and appeared rather intoxicated in the way he failed to follow any straight path. His meandering, however, eventually lead him to the pantleg of an unfortunate bystander. He latched onto Daymar without really thinking about it. Grglgrglgrlg, said the brown, before promptly being rushed by a headstrong gray.
She had been watching Daymar like a hawk. Plotting. She didn't know what she was plotting, but oh, she was plotting, and she had a fierce glint in her eye. As soon as the brown bonded to the boy, the gray lost it and ran, whiskers raised, hissing. She slammed into Daymar in a way that would no doubt give him a heart attack, but her small size meant no real feeling accompanied the collision. She shoved the brown over so she could have the prime spot of pantleg - which, of course, had been the exact spot the brown had been on before - and let out a feral hiss. SSSSSSSSSS, she projected, asserting her... well, assertiveness.
A few more pillies were breaking free of their tiny eggs. One pink in particular managed to somersault out of hers, the tiniest baby of all, and rolled happily in the sand. She curled and uncurled herself, stretched her little legs and little feelers and little body. She quite enjoyed the rolling and did a fair amount of that, picking up sand on her damp and sticky back. Then she turned her bright little eyes to the people standing around and curled up out of excitement. Then she scuttled over to the best big, two-leggy, walk-funny thing and climbed all the way up to Saia's shoulder. There, she attached to the girl, secreting her bonding substance to form the link. Plip! she chirped, quite delighted with her new link. Plip plip! And she sent Saia the dim sensation of rolling.

It was all Xiro'el's fault.
Him walking up behind Daymar arrested the Candidate in his efforts toward freedom, and the blue firelizard on his shoulder - new information - temporarily derailed his frantic reaction to the hatching. Xiro had a firelizard now? Xiro had a firelizard. This meant he was responsible for the dead tunnelsnake, for Daymar being driven out of his room. And also responsible, since his arrival prevented Daymar's escape, for what happened next.
"You!" he hissed, glaring at Xiro and at the same time flinching back from the potentially-disastrous firelizard. Which only put him a step or two closer to the wandering brown. Daymar noticed instantly when the thing latched onto his pants leg, and he glanced down in abrupt horror. Sure, it was a tiny baby, and the gurgling in his head didn't sound at all aggressive or unkind, but...but it was a bug. And it seemed to be secreting some sort of substance. Most likely toxic.
"Shards and shells," he said in an unnaturally high voice, feeling rather faint, but before he could even try shaking the clueless brown off, the gray one charged. He barely even felt the impact or the little tussle that won her the best spot on his leg, and therefore the fact that he immediately fell over was all melodrama.
But it was sincere melodrama. "Help!" he gasped. "They're poisoning me!" The fact that the gray one hissed and that the bonding to her was far more of...more of everything only dismayed him more. It had not quite hit him yet that they were bonding like firelizards and dragons and whers, only in a less intense way, and he took it as a further sign of the apocalypse that he could feel her aggression. Which he took for hostility, rather than being claimed in a good, protective way. "I think it's biting me!"
The brown, for his part, didn't mind at all being pushed out of the way, and began a steady, wandering climb up Daymar's prone body. Moving was good, even if he was moving without any real direction in mind. The gray hissed again and clung even tighter to Daymar's leg, glaring up at Xiro'el. Yes, her plan had worked perfectly, now that in retrospect, she knew what that plan had been.
----
Saia didn't know Daymar too well, mainly because he avoided her like the plague, but she still clapped enthusiastically when she saw the babies go after him. This was a good thing, and her mind was torn from his histrionics by the continuation of the hatching. The redheaded Candidate gave a squeal of delight at the sight of the tiny, tiny pink, so playful and adorable. "Oh, I didn't bring any food," she lamented. Stupid impulse control, she'd been right there in the dining hall!
But apparently, unlike firelizards, the pillies didn't require someone to have food to share, because once the pink finished her happy rolling, she came scuttling quickly over to Saia. The girl held quite still while the pink climbed, so as not to accidentally knock her off, thrilled and delighted by how quickly she moved.
"Plip?" she repeated, absolutely beaming. "Yes, I saw you rolling! You're very good at it." She tilted her head so she could nuzzle the sand-covered pillie with her cheek, and then gave a quiet shriek of joy and spun around. "I'm going to call you...Flip! I bet you'll like flipping just as much as rolling. And tumbling, and..."
Retreating just a little ways, so that others could come and get wonderful pillies of their own, she promptly flopped onto the ground and rolled around, one hand curled protectively over adorable Flip. See? They could roll together and be best friends!

OoC: One for Ridley!
BiC:
It was all just a matter of bad luck for Ridley. Since he accidentally stabbed a pillie the last time he was this close to the lake, the young Candidate was reluctant enough to steer clear of the place. The memory of Pia hissing at him still burned in the back of his brain, as well as the chewing out he received from B'wie after this massive ordeal.
No, he wouldn't have been out there unless he needed to be, and due to the floors he just spilled a few gallons of oil over, he required buckets of water from the lake to clean up after himself.
Being that this was his first major accident in the past couple of weeks, he was annoyed enough about making the mess that he neglected to notice anything special happening by the shore. He was on his way out there for a second pailful of water when he noticed the small gathering crowd. He wanted to get those floors cleaned up quickly so he'd have some time to eat lunch, so he wrestled with natural curiosity in order to keep on without further distraction. It wasn't really working. Since it was so rare for people to just gather over anything, he had to wonder what it was that could attract so much attention. Weren't dragons sort of interesting enough as it was?
Ridley continued to weigh his options, but his feet were leading him towards the site of the hatching instead. When he got there, he traced Saia's gaze until he found himself gazing down upon the tiny scrambling forms of what looked like beetles. Awfully familiar beetles. "Pillies!" he exclaimed.
No. Nonono--"They're everywhere! Wha--what's going on? What's this about?" Ridley sought out answers from those around him, but he started backing away inch by inch, intimidated by those little swarming masses. One clung to a person across from him. What was it doing? "Is it /feeding/?" he asked, pointing at Saia's pink pillie. Ridley went a little pale at the thought. What if several of those things decided to feed on you at once? They'd drain you completely!

Hungry.
It was really the only thing on Damali's mind as she meandered across the still-light Weyr bowl, yawning widely. Damask, back in their room, grumbled sleepily, but the red was far from ready to be up for their 'day'. So Damali had to make the journey to the dining caverns alone, hoping to catch breakfast...or rather, dinner, while there was still some of the good bits left.
From down by the lake, she heard the sounds of someone having a hysterical fit. A quick glance showed her a slowly swelling crowd by the shoreline, but not enough was visible between the people to give her an idea of what was going on. She looked longingly towards the kitchens and food, but turned to go find out what was going on instead. Food could, after all, wait. It was entirely possible that this couldn't.
She came up behind a familiar shoulder, “What's going on?” she muttered quietly in Xiro'el's ear, but it was rather unnecessary. There were...bug things. Pillies? Something like that – they were hatching and three of them were on people...and they were oozing something.
Weird.
Damali decided she kind of liked them. Anything that oozed was alright in her book. Heck, that little pink was downright cute! (A semi-conscious grumble from Damask on her opinion of the color pink notwithstanding.)
OOC: Damali for the pillie! Yaaay!

Another brown was already wandering about the beach, pausing often and only taking a few little steps at a time. His feelers waved about obsessively, trying to sense all that he could. Eventually, his short spurts of movement found him waving the fronds at a blue who looked all too unhappy about it. The blue arched its back in annoyance and popped into a little ball, promptly rolling - unintentionally - down the slight incline he had been on. He snapped back open and was equally unhappy with his surprising new position.
The brown moved on in his inconsistent way, full of curiosity but also full of caution. Eventually, he caught sight of something that quite interested him. Looking up - a difficult feat for his stiff little body - he saw something that was all red on top! All caution was blown to the wind as he was far to interested in the red-topped object. He scuttled forward with great haste and climbed his way up the intriguing tower. He latched himself firmly to Damali's tummy, clicking in delight. Klkclklckikikiklck! He continued to chatter away, waving his feelers about and getting to know Damali the best he could.
The blue sulked where he was, rigid and entirely unhappy. He received an unwelcome visitor, then - the largest pillie yet, dark reddish-brown with a vibrant red-orange streak on her back. She promptly shoved right into him, a gesture that she believed was affectionately violent. Though she was darker than her mother, the offensive creature was indeed an amber. Her consort trailed behind her, a snooty-looking black. He huffed at the blue and, if he had had a nose, it would be firmly in the air and looked down. He hung back while his amber made friends.
The blue, however, would have none of it. He curled back up into a ball and the amber seemed fixed on taking her new trinket with her. She looked back at the black in triumph. Loot! Blue loot! All hers! And she began to roll her little brother around. She was exceedingly happy until the blue uncurled again and quickly scuttled off. The amber pouted. Foiled! Her plan was foiled!
Fuming, the blue stomped over to Ridley and hoisted himself up to the boy's thigh. He didn't care that Ridley was worried. He didn't care about anything at all. Sour as could be, the blue continued to be a grump even when he formed the link with his lifemate. FFFFFFT, he hissed. FFFFFFFFFF.
The amber, quite upset about her missing booty, walked off with arrogance. The black stayed where he was, unwilling to follow such a childish captain... queen, even if she was the queen. The amber turned back, offended. Mutiny? He was committing mutiny? Disgusting! Horrible! No one did that to her! She hissed audible and stalked off again, only to find herself facing the leg of one of the humans. Finally! A good treasure! Arrrrr! She suctioned herself to Yalenia, letting out a cry of piratey triumph.
The black, meanwhile, had calmly attached himself to the excited blond boy. Hrm, he said, indicating his lack of interest in E'rin but his unfortunate need for him as well. E'rin was elated nonetheless. "You're just like Levi!" he grinned, wondering briefly where his independent brown firelizard was at the moment. He found the brown's consciousness sleeping somewhere far off. "You can be Levi II!" And he rubbed the black's smooth shell, whether Levi II liked it or not.

No sooner had she walked up to see what was going on when she had something climbing up her leg and latching on to her belly. Damali was impressed, and Impressed to boot – these little guys were efficient. She craned her neck to get a good look at the little guy attached to her…a brown one. She put a hand on his smooth shell, laughing as he clicked away excitedly in her head and tickled her hand and belly with his feelers, and tried to mimic the clicking sound he was making in her head out loud.
She could clearly feel his renewed enthusiasm at the sounds she was making back at him – and so could Damask, What do now? Why bug here? ‘Here’ apparently referred to Damali’s head.
I like bugs. And little…Moose, she defended her new pet, naming him the first nonsense word that came to mind, here is the very best of bugs. She stroked her brown pillie, looking up in time to see the blue escape the amber and Impress to one of the Candidates. The newly named Moose, for his part, was now tentatively reaching out to explore the other red thing that was talking to him and his new red-topped thing. He seemed to have a lot of red things in his possession all of the sudden, and he couldn’t be any more pleased about it!

Ridley froze up the moment he felt itchy, scratchy legs clamoring up his calf before he could get an answer to his extremely important and highly relevant question. Once the shock cleared, which was instant, he jumped back and started shaking his leg furiously. "ARAARGAHAH! IT'S GOT ME! GETITOFFGETITOOOOFF!" Throwing himself to the floor, he eyed the Blue as if it were baring bloody teeth at him and staring into his soul with this ghastly, beady eyes. Ridley's expression was the definition of pure, pants crapping fear. It was still latched on to him, twitching its antennae at a faster rhythm in agitation. Fffft. What was this unnecessary drama about?
The boy reached his hand over the pillie's body with hesitation, too frightened to touch the thing. He didn't feel any teeth in his thigh yet, but he was afraid that touching the Blue would only provoke it. He felt something, like he ought to be calmer and reassured, but that was just silly. THERE WAS A FLIPPIN' BUG ATTACHED TO HIS LEG FOR FARANTH'S SAKE. His fingers were just inches away from the Blue's shell, and the moment he grazed its back the pillie was secreting a sticky fluid upon his leg. Ridley's hand retracted to his side at the speed a tunnelsnake could envy and his pupils seemed to shrink to the size of grains. "Oh Faranth, it's GOING TO FEED!"
But the Blue did nothing of a sort. He only voiced his grievance louder, mostly to shut this human up, calm it down, or at least break through his annoying noise. FfffffffFFFfff.
By this point, the Candidate was too scared to do anything without getting some advice from those around him. They seemed to know something he didn't. Instead of panicking or even showing the smallest hint of fear or apprehension, a lot of these people appeared pleased to inherit one of these creatures. He knew they could be pets. He knew too well. He just didn't want to get bit was all. No one else looked to be the least bit preoccupied about that. It's a good thing he wasn't a Wher Candidate. He wouldn't have had the guts for it.
Ridley's stare returned to the Blue, who was silent now that the boy was done screaming like an endangered wherry. He was still not ready to touch the pillie. He wasn't even ready to try. He stared at it for about a minute before realizing that he ought to name it. At least...that's what he was overhearing. Problem was, Ridley never did have a pet before, or the opportunity to name anything. He wasn't the most creative person on the planet.
Ftftfff the pillie quietly muttered. He wasn't feeling his best, not that it was anything new, but the pillie knew he needed to get into the water. He was quiet about it because he wasn't looking forward to it.
"Bitter. You're so...bitter. That's what you are. I think that's what I'm going to call you. It's better than 'Get It Off Me', innit?" Ridley let out a nervous laugh and looked around him again, trying to figure out what he was supposed to do next.

Out and about, something that this Iron Weyrling rarely did anymore. It was more often that W'lin was bound to stay just in the company of his dragon, and not search out others. It was something he had to start working on, but at the time, it rarely seemed to matter. No one sought him out, except to remind him to do his chores, and he didn't seek others out. If it wasn't for the fact that he took up a large singular room, oh, and the fact that his future was going to be that of a King rider, no matter what his sexual preference was (and he was sure that people still got a chuckle from his outburst during the hatching), he was sure that if wasn't for those things, he would have been forgotten, easily.
Chyurath liked to remind him that they were to make sure that no one did something stupid enough to get anyone killed, and at times put his one day rider in place by telling him that he should just stay behind, as his attitude often led people to making big mistakes that got others hurt. It had been Chyurath's way of protecting Wessy from getting punched in the face once he made someone mad enough to do that, but it didn't come out that way.
Today though, W'lin was walking around the ground, pausing to take in a sigh of a fading flower, enjoying the smells that were coupled with this season. He liked this season the most, it wasn't hot, but it wasn't freezing, and he got away with wearing long sleeved shirt... though Chyu liked to remind him that anyone who had something to say about Wessy's scars was going to answer to a very angry young Iron... and no matter how young he was, one still didn't want to be on the receiving end of him being mad.
Trying to avoid the lake, he frowned at Chyurath's sudden comment.
Hatching of some sort on the lake, W'lin. I think it'd be wise of you to go and check it in my stead.
I don't really th-
Go!
Matched with the mental image of snapping teeth, W'lin sent his irritation over their link, and stalked off towards the lake. He was sure that this was just another one of Chyurath's attempts to get him to stop fearing water. King Riders weren't afraid of water, water saved lives, water was the foundation of life. W'lin had nothing against water, he had something against lakes and seas though, because he was sure he was going to drown in them. Muttering something outloud about Chyurath being lost to the between if he drowned in the lake, his pale eyes were surprised when he did see commotion going on there.
Actually stepping closer, his dark eyebrows disappeared into his hairline as he saw that in fact it was a hatching, a pillie hatching. Shaking his head, not the biggest fan of the bugs, but not having as big a problem with them as some, he stepped back, happy to remain on the outskirts and watching the events unfold. Chyurath wouldn't let him leave if he wanted to anyway. Part of responsibility or some rot like that. Though a smirk did tug at one newly Impressed pillie owners freakout. Okay, maybe this was a better show then he thought.

Yalenia watched the bugs moving about with fascination. She had always been the type to just enjoy watching things whether or not anything would come of it. Watching the pillies sparked a lot of interest as she watched the first few hatching and making their way over to a young male whom didn’t seem to be paying attention until the Brown and the Gray leapt at him. Having never seen a Pillie hatching before Yalenia had no idea what to expect but this was not it. The bugs launched themselves at the boy and latched onto him. Like a giddy apprentice Yalenia clapped lightly with some laughter. Apparently, the boy didn’t like these creatures attaching themselves to him for he immediately started freaking out and blaming the young man behind him.
Looking back at the pillies she was disappointed to see that she had missed the hatching and impression of a pink as well as the hatching of a brown and blue. She did not, however, miss the hatching of the reddish-brown and black. Watching the new set of pillies she smiled at the antics of each one. Each of them had their very own personality and it was showing through even at this stage. The largest one, she thought it must have been Amber, seemed to think her blue brother was some sort of treasure and was trying to collect him in a way. The poor blue was rolled into a ball and the Amber seemed to be enjoying pushing him along with a black in tow.
Yalenia found it rather amusing, therefore, when the blue uncurled and latched himself onto the young blond boy who immediately started flailing and trying to remove the bug from his person. She was even more surprised when she heard a yell of triumph and felt something attach to her leg.
Arrr!
Looking down she spotted the Amber pillie attached to her leg and stared at her in shock. Well… That was surprising… She was careful not to move the pillie too much as she held out her hand for the pillie to crawl onto.
RrrrftArrr

Kida was moping. Yes. Moping. Lyr wouldn't let her play with Sequin. Lyr said Sequin was still a bit too small and too excitable for Kida to handle her. She was allowed to play with Satin though. Yea. That was fun. The toddler grumped and stared at the Copper. Otyher people might leap at the chance. But Satin was boring. She didn't really want to play. She just wanted to sun herself. So Kida did the next best thing. She went to the lake. There she could splash in the Shallows, and Satin could sun. Maybe she would make mud pies. Kida liked mud pies.
Her gait was more hop-skippy than usual. Kidanyr loved the lake. From there she could watch other people and their dragons! Kida loved dragons. They smelled nice, and their skin felt funny, but not funny in a bad way. As she neared the Lake though, she saw people. Lots of people.
What were they staring at. She frowned a bit. Was she missing something fun? No. She didn't want ot miss fun! Motioning to Satin she ran to join them, weaving between legs and people. “What's here?” she asked, peering at the sand. What were those? Bugs? They were small and cute. Looking up to the others, she tilted her head a bit. She hadn't really seen a pillie up close. She had only heard of them, and even then, she hadn't heard much. “Are they babies?” She asked no one in particular, pointing to a few pillies.
Kida wanted to watch the babies hatch! So she plopped down on the ground and crossed her legs, her eyes shining brightly as she stared at them. “Hi babies, I love you.” OoC: One pillie for Kida please

There was a little pink among the eggs that had been scuttling around for quite some time. She was more on the salmon end of the spectrum, compared to her rolly sister Flip, but seemed similarly excited. She wiggled about and actually seemed to be shivering quite a lot. She was like an eager canine puppy, unable to contain her energy.
When she walked past an egg just as it hatched, she started, turning to face the brand new sibling. It was a gray, who immediately crawled out of the broken shell to meet her pink sister. The two young ladies were both delighted and went scuttling about in each others' company. The gray was glad just to have something small to watch other and the pink was glad to have an adventure partner, vibrating with joy. They made their rounds about the other eggs, coming across a newly-hatched brass.
The brass moved to join in on their adventure, but the pink ignored him for the fun of it, and the gray wasn't as interested in the larger male as she was in her tiny sister. Feeling dejected but refusing to show it, the brass shrugged it off and stood firmly where he was, surveying everything going on because, after all, he was great and he didn't have to play to be great. The crown mark on his head segment was more abstract than his two brass predecessors', Lord and Fin.
The pink, though enjoying her time with the gray, had the attention span of a goldfish and was immediately interested in every single thing that caught her eye. Then, one particular thing caught her eye, and she was nearly vibrated her shell off. Now, but why was he way over there? He should have been closer! Oh, but she could get there! With a farewell chirp to her sister, the pink sped away as fast as her tiny legs could carry her. She hoisted herself up onto W'lin and proceeded to shiver up next to his skin under his shirt. Cuddles! Brrrrr! Love! Brrrrr!
The gray realized she needed a replacement little sister, her protective instincts leaving her feeling empty at the pink's absence. All of the humans, though, they were too big... except for one! The gray knew that she needed that one tiny human. Trundling over to Kidanyr, the gray looked extremely pleased. She climbed all the way to the youngster's shoulder and clung to her there, secreting her bonding agent and forming the link. Lu, she said simply, entirely happy with her new best friend. She had no plans to leave that little bitty shoulder for quite some time.

There was a certain jubilation that lit up on her face as she watched the small pillies make their way up the shore. They were so small! She wondered what would happen if she touched one. Would they bite? She certainly hoped not. She oohed a bit as the pink and the gray moved about. Looking to the adults around her, she smiled. They had pillies clinging to them! Did the pillies like people? It looked like it. She wondered if they were like firelizards. From what she could tell, they didn't need food to choose a person.
Looking back to the pink and gray, she made a soft, sad sound for the brass as he was left behind. Did they not like him? Poor guy. But he would find friends. Making friends was easy. Clapping her hands on her lap, she eyed the pink as it moved off to join a young man. Oh oh! She saw him at the dragon hatching. “She's pretty!” The young girl added, smiling brightly.
Looking back to the eggs, she wondered who the brass and gray would pick, or if they were just content sitting back. Maybe they would wait and help their brothers and sisters. But the gray looked a bit sad. Did she miss the pink? Kidanyr could understand that. She missed her mom sometimes too. But the pillie would find a friend. A friend, that turned out to be her!
Was this ok? She wasn't quite sure, what if this one belonged to someone else? But as the gray climbed onto her she sat stock still, not wanting to scare her. Lu, The gray was quite content with the one she had picked. She was small. She liked that. Lu ruuu she purred happily.
Kida practically beamed as she did her best to look at the gray on her shoulder. She could tell the gray was now hers, and that knowledge filled her with joy. “Hello there! Comfy?” She asked, giggling a bit. This pillie needed a name. Squinting a bit she toyede with names in her head. Suddenly, she thought of the best name. “Quintin. Your name will be Quintin.” The three turn old was quite sure of it. What could be better than taking the names of her two favorite firelizards, and combining them? Luuuuuu Quintin purred again, quite happy.

((Two pillies for Rethalt, please! though I'd find it hilarious if one Impressed to Tunnelsnake xD))Technically, the day was starting to end, but according to whers and handlers alike, it was a tad too early to be up. Rethalt was wrapped up in his furs, quietly snoring, and Resk was coiled up at the foot of the bed, snuffling every so often in his sleep. The brown wher would occasionally kick his feet in his sleep, probably dreaming about chasing after a particularly fat and juicy wherry or something. It was one of the particularly hard kicks that jostled the bed and woke him up. Startled, he pushed himself into a sitting position, breathing a bit hard. ”Frikkin’ wherry-brain…” he mumbled as Resk continued to sleep. A growling stomach kept the handler from going back to sleep, and with a grumble and a ‘loving’ oath or two towards the dreaming wher, he stumbled his way out of the wherhandler quarters.
Rubbing his eyes free of sleep, Rethalt made his way across the bowl towards the Dining Hall. However, as he passed by the lake, he didn't fail to notice the slowly growing number of people congregating around on e particular spot near the lake shore. Curiosity getting the better of him, he caught a passerby by the arm. ”Excuse me, but would you mind telling me what the blazes is going on?” he asked the man. ”Why, it’s a pillie hatching, of course! What, do you live under a rock?” the man replied before going on his way.
A pillie? It took a few moments for him to remember what a pillie was before snapping his fingers in recognition. Pillies, of course! Tunnelsnake came flying seconds later, having caught onto Hers’ joy at being at the right place at the right time. It seemed like a bunch of the little water bugs had already hatched, but there were plenty more eggs where they came from! The little Green chittered happily, crawling forward to see the action. There were so many colors! She creeled impatiently at Hers. Why didn’t he hurry up before they didn’t get one? They were so cute!
The young man was not far behind his rambunctious little green, but he was a bit hesitant about getting any closer, opting to sit down behind the flitter. He didn’t know how to care for one, didn’t know what they needed, and shard it, even if they were cute (which they were, in they own little insectoid way), he didn’t know how many more pets he could take care of! Then again, they seemed pretty low-maintenance… With Tunnelsnake’s mind made up, he had no choice but to see if one would scuttle his way.

"Yes, me." Xiro'el raised a brow and grinned, oblivious to whatever Daymar was getting at but not particularly caring. Hey, as long as the guy didn't mug him again, life was good. Having a firelizard rather helped with the lack of mugging, Xiro suspected, judging by the way the candidate flinched back from him. Good. At least, it was good as long as Avsiran didn't get hit either.
O-kay then. No danger of violence, now, except maybe to the pillies. The cyanrider watched in puzzlement as two pillies attached themselves to Daymar, prompting the inevitable freak-out. Oh dear. Xiro, being ever so helpful, merely watched and let a broad grin spread across his face. "They're not poisoning you," he assured the candidate, quite sure that this was in fact a bonding process. He'd heard about these things. They had to be pillies, and that meant they didn't kill people. They bonded to people. Not like he expected Daymar to know that.
A familiar voice sounded at his shoulder, and Xiro turned his head to find Damali there. Instantly his gaze brightened, and he laughed softly. "Pillie hatching, I think," he volunteered to answer her question, and then quirked a brow when, almost immediately afterward, a brown pillie climbed up the redhandler and clung to her belly. "Congrats!" For the moment, Xiro turned back to Daymar and met the stare of the tiny grey pillie. He thought it was a stare, anyway. From this height it was kind of hard to tell if the baby even had eyes.
"Daymar, you know they're not killing you, right? The grey one's glaring at me. I think. You should be proud of it!" He really had no idea how to tell the genders apart, so he didn't even try.

Oh, Xiro'el was going to get mugged. As soon as Daymar recovered from the shock and panic, he would immediately begin plotting. The cyanrider had never brought him anything but humiliation and pain, and this, this was a step too far. It was entirely Xiro's fault. Nor did Daymar believe him about them not being venomous.
Glancing down at them, he groaned in misery at the sight of the brown on the move. "Why me?" he demanded.
For a moment, the brown paused, its attention briefly caught and focused to a pinpoint. Why. Why, why, why. That had a nice ring to it, and the confusion that clouded Daymar's mind reminded the brown of the fog in which he lived his content, meandering existence. Grglgrgl, he projected, in order to show his approval of this new name. Why would never answer to anything else.
Not that he would probably answer to Why most of the time either.
The gray, on the other hand, felt no need for a name, especially not one picked at random from her bigperson's ramblings. She was content to remain nameless until he appreciated her enough to pick the perfect one; she didn't entirely understand the concept of names yet, anyway. SSSSSSSS, she repeated, attempting to convey to the bigperson that she would assist him in his plots against the monstrous one. Well, by assist she meant "take care of." Somebody in this relationship had to be the assertive leader-type, and it was obviously going to be her.
The hissing only distressed Daymar further, however; he had no idea what she was trying to indicate, what the brown was thinking, or any of it. "I'm sure that I'm dying," he said in a choked voice. "Get Sebol. Get Reylia. Get Delilah! Or - or - " He watched in horror as one of the bug-monsters claimed a child as its prey, and madly scrambled back to his feet, which did nothing to shake off either of his new pets. "Let's just get out of here before more of them come for me!"
-----
Saia ended up laying on the ground on her belly, Flip still attached to her shoulder, watching the hatching progress with sparkling eyes. Ridley freaked as much as Daymar had, and she giggled and bounded to her feet, which earned her a happy sound from Flip, who enjoyed the sensation of movement. "He's really cute!" she told Ridley earnestly. "And they don't eat people, you know! They're really nice. I've never even seen one before, but I heard all about them! This is Flip." Her wandering attention soon latched onto Damali, and she said cheerfully, "Congratulations! I like your hair. Oh, look, that one picked a little girl. Hey, if more people don't show up, maybe we'll get more pillies! I don't want too many though. Other people should definitely have a chance."

A black had hatched without any fanfare. He'd just... hatched. Whatever. He left his egg behind without a second thought and made his slow way across the graveyard of eggshells to the row of large human feet. Whatever. He was just going there, no big deal. He passed the snotty brass and threw him an unimpressed look. Who did he think he was? Well, whoever it was, the black didn't care. He just felt like he needed to latch onto something - which wasn't a big deal - and was going to find something to serve that purpose. He trundled along until he bumped into Rethalt. What was that? Oh, well, it's not like it mattered. It would do fine. The little black nonchalantly scuttled up to Rethalt's ankle and firmly suctioned himself there.
Meh, he said, and hoped Rethalt wouldn't get too excited. It wasn't something to get excited over. It was just... well, whatever.
The brass was a little upset about being passed by. He watched the black go and huffed and puffed. He just wanted to play! He just wanted to be awesome, too! He just... he needed a person, that's what! All the cool pillies were attaching to people. So if he attached to a person, he would be extra cool, because he was already pretty great. Confident in his plan, the brass zipped off. See, he'd join that black over there, and they'd be high-ranking officials of awesome! The blonde kid looked pretty great, too. Like he was going to pee his pants. The brass was so awesome, he was confident he could make the human boy pee his pants. He climbed up to E'rin's forearm and latched on there. Mrmlrmlrmlmlmlrmlrmrmr! he announced, and E'rin beamed. "Murmle!" he christened the brass, but did not pee his pants. A blue flopped out of his eggs, looking entirely pathetic. His eyes seemed particularly large for a pillie and particularly pleading. He gurgled sadly and flailed until he was rightside-up and trudged along. Oh, he just wanted someone... Someone special. Someone to love. He sighed wistfully. The hopeless romantic stared around at all the faces before him. There were so many... but some already had love. Some were freaking out. But one of them... one of them was beautiful, and the blue loved him immediately. He sped up his little trudge to an awkward shuffle and proceeded to climb all the way up to Rethalt's chest. Sssa? he asked. He just wanted some love. Some cuddles. From His. Ssssaaaa.[/blockquote]

Little one, Just a little way, Today all we need is waiting.
Traepsie was a little late to the pillie party. She hadn't noticed anything amiss until she was ambling across the bowl and saw the assembled crowd on the lake shore. Curious, hoping nothing was wrong, she dawdled over there. She squirmed into the crowd, careful not to jostle anyone. She poked her head between the shoulders of some of the people at the front and peered down at what everyone was so interested in seeing. There weren't many eggs left, but she identified the little cluster as eggs, though strange compared to the ones with which she was familiar. Bugs were crawling everywhere, clinging to limbs and body parts all around her. Pillies. Oh, it was a pillie hatching! She smiled at that revelation. She knew very little about the insectoid species, but it was hard not to at least know of them unless you kept your head in the sand. They were shiny, new, and famous!
Traepsie, quite enamored, looked over the tiny, little hatchlings. They were so colorful! Brown and green and blue and pink and glossy black and shiny bronze! Sort of like dragons, but not really. Or maybe? She didn't know all that much about dragons either, just what they learned in candidate lessons. Basic anatomy. Basic ideas of care. That sort of thing. She was always fairly good at that stuff, being well-trained in how to work with animals. It was the social dynamics of dragons and these pillies and such that escaped her, both from lack of experience and a lack of understanding for the complexity of them. Either way, she got that these pillies seemed to be Impressing. She didn't particular think that she wanted one or would get one, but it was nice, wasn't it? Watching a hatching. It was a happy time. It made the smile come easy to her face.
Little one, Just a little way, Today all of the dreams are waking.

Smiling as he saw some of the pillies attach themselves to their chosen, it was actually really interesting to watch. They were so different from dragons and flitters and felines, he was actually becoming more glad that Chyu had made him come outside, as this was definitely something he didn't want to miss. How often was there a pillie hatching? Not enough for him to know exactly how these pillies bonded to their chosen. W'lin was watching every single one, they were cute in a way he hadn't thought before. Blinking as one boy was nearly losing his mind as the little pillie seemed to have chosen him, W'lin felt a brush of Iron as he wanted to stand up, walk over to him, and give the boy a good shake to stop goofing around and to take a breath, that he was acting stupid, and should learn how to control himself.
Shifting his feet, he was about to stand when a cute little salmon colored pillie was moving around. She seemed to be having fun with a little gray, and he wondered if those two would choose, he hoped so. They both seemed so lovable. W'lin needed some of that love for himself, just general caring that he kept feeling like he was missing.
As if someone had been listening to him, that adorable little pink seemed to stop when she saw h-oh please let it be him that she saw. She seemed to excited, and while he already had Nality, she was happier to jump and fly around than actually cuddle up to him. When the little pink pillie scuttled over, he barely could believe it, and when she crawled onto him, he was smiling so big that his jaw was starting to ache.
The laughter was a surprise to him, but she tickled, under his shirt and shivering with excitement. A bit of a wince as the bonding agent, it felt strange. Brrrrr! Love! Brrrrr! The sudden overwhelming feeling of love for him made him ache, and he reached up to gently touch the bag of her shell. "You... you are. Oh wo-heh hey! That tickles!" Laughing again, as she snuggled closer, making almost purring noises as she cuddled. "You're a little cuddle machine... I think I'll call you Snoozle."
Brrrr!!!! Brrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!
Laughing again as she seemed to like the name, he pet her again, before being infected with a fit of giggles, not caring if it drew looks. He could feel Chyurath shaking his head at the sudden silliness of his usually solemn or snippy weyrling.

It was a little early for whers to be outside; still a little bright for their sensitive eyes. Fenrimere and Fenrisk had no intention of letting that stop them from having a bit of fun before their lessons started, though. That was just too boring to contemplate! Besides, Fenrimere thought virtuously, they were practicing. Sort of. She winced as Fenrisk bounded into the wall just to the left of the entrance to the door. They were practicing seeing through each other's eyes, and Fenrisk had her eyelids closed tightly, safe against the pale dusk outside, but she hadn't quite gotten the hang of using Fenrimere's eyes yet. Well, eye. In some respects, Fenrisk seemed to prefer the view from her damaged eye, since it was more familiar than all the tiny details and colors from the good eye, but even that didn't help her to remember that things that seemed straight ahead were really straight ahead of the handler, not the wher.
Fenrimere knelt down next to her white as Fenrisk yipped. "Not that bad, is it?" she asked, rubbing the ugly head. "Lots more to see out in the Bowl."
Wall hurt Fenrisk. Fenrisk hurt back?
Fenrimere kissed the top of Fenrisk's head, then stood. "Of course you did." She directed her gaze at the lake, where there was some kind of gathering going on. "Stay beside me, right? Looks like a happy little trick going on down there."
Mischief spread along their bond, though it was difficult to tell if it came from handler or wher. Fenrisk roar, scare all. Fenrisk declared. Fen see for Fenrisk what there for.
Fenrimere grinned. She loved not having to explain her plans; having someone who just got it like her brother used to when they were little. "C'mon then." They sauntered across the Bowl towards the lake, Fenrisk pressed close to Fenrimere so that she wouldn't lose her way as she continued trying to sort through the images Fenrimere was sending her.
They reached the edge of the crowd, and Fenrimere patted Fenrisk's head in permission. "ROAR!" As enough weyrfolk scattered to make a path to the center of the commotion, Fenrisk made the peculiar chuffing sound that passed for a laugh, and Fenrimere grinned.
"Getting' louder, aren't you?" she asked, stopping as she spied the eggs and bugs that seemed to be the source of all the fuss. Fenrisk shoved her snout forward, sniffing for them. Bugs? Giant bugs? She didn't know giant bugs. Did they like fun too?

A creamy pillie tumbled from its egg then, promptly blinking up at all the faces and the wide, sunset sky. Oh, it was big out there. The pillie wanted to be big, too! Being big would be so much fun. The pillie waved its feelers in the general direction of the hopeful humans. They were big... and oh, how the pillie wanted to be just as big. It could stomp over everything! It could be the best! It could do anything it wanted! Excited by its imagination, the pillie put its little legs to work and started to rush about.
A small egg popped just as the speckled pillie passed, letting out a runty little green. Pastel in hue, the little green seemed similarly subdued in personality. She lugged herself over to the speckled pillie, who had stopped to marvel at how tiny she was, and climbed up onto its spotted back. The green let out a relieved sigh. There - now she wouldn't have to walk around. That was too much work. It's not like she was out of shape... she was just very, very lazy by choice.
The speckled pillie, having pondered the additional weight for a moment, finally decided that it was so excited about its passenger. Having something on top her shell... oh, it felt just like its mother! It was big like its mother, carrying around babies! It could pretend to be a mother! Oh, it could be big and -- suddenly, it realized it could be female, just like its mother, and made the prompt decision. Now female, the speckled young lady zipped about - albeit more laboriously than before, given her stowaway green - and zipped right up to the big white thing. It was big! And white! Big and white like she was! Wiggling with excitement, she climb up the leg of the big big human near the big white wher and shook the green off so they could both cling to Fenrimere. Ah! Ah! announced the white, a sound full of light and joy. La, said the green, a curiously sing-song voice for such a noncommittal, lazy creature. A brown had headbutted his way out of his little egg and stood stock still, quite proud of himself for having escaped but unsure of what to do then. That bothered him. He wanted to know what to do! He wanted someone to tell him! They should tell him right now, because he was getting really angry about not knowing. It's like everyone was keeping a secret from him. Everyone was against him. He glowered and stomped forward, grumbling to himself. Ugh! What a stupid day to be born! He trampled through the remaining shreds of eggs and aggressively ignored his few other siblings that wandered about. He just wanted to know! Nobody was telling him anything! His tiny black eyes scrutinized the humans. There! - That one was smiling! She probably knew everything that he didn't. She was probably smirking because she knew he didn't know. He hated her! But he needed that information! He needed to be the best and know everything (though he never really would with a brain as small as his) and he rocketed toward Traepsie. He slammed into her ankle with as much force as his tiny little body could muster. Blrp! he demanded, fastening himself to her skin. Blrp BLRP! Briefly, furiously, he glanced back at the four remaining buglets: a brass, two greens and a pink. They probably knew secrets, too. He hated them for being so smart, but turned back to his smirking girl. BLRRRRR.[/blockquote]

Like the evening prize, In a turnstile backwards we fly, Cold bones, Tied together by.
Still smiling, Traepsie had been watching the wherling with the roaring white and her two new pillies companions when something collided with her ankle. She flinched and moved to lift her foot, but found a small weight securely fastened to it. Blinking, smile fading a bit, she peered down at her new friend. The little dark brown with his faint little mottles was quite adorable, but how aggressive he was! How she knew that he was being furtive and that he was angry was beyond her, as it was a dim awareness, in the back of her mind. She definitely knew he was there. Oh, she'd Impressed! That cheered her, even if it was a small victory compared to her defeat at the last hatching. It hadn't shaken her, but it had definitely been a bit of a setback. Now she had a friend though, a pet, even if he was a bit grumpy! She beamed down at him as his blerped in his crotchety way.
"Tips, calm down;" Traepsie chided him, voice calm and even. She was used to handling animals, so that was what she did. He could be grumpy all he wanted, and the way he was glowering at her now suggested that he would be grumpy a lot, but she was going to handle him calmly but firmly. "I'll get you food and then you'll feel better. Once you release my ankle, you can go swimming;" she told him, forming a plan. Always best to act like you knew what you were doing with an animal, because along as you used your head, they would at least respect you that way. Nodding her head at Fenrimere in congratulations, she limped off, trying not to jostle Tips too much. Naming him was the easy part. It was just something you did, but what did pillies eat? Oh, right, fish and lots of it. They would have fish in the kitchens probably; she'd go see. BLRP! Tips wanted to see too!
Black ropes we pulled from a swing, Little one, Just a little way, Today all of the dreams are waking.
