Kida crossed her arms over her chest as people filtered out. She wanted to look at the eggs too! When more people cleared out, she grabbed Lyr's hand and dragged her to the front of the pack. When Paget spoke, She listened, and got the rought gist. Tugging on the edge of Lyr's shirt, she looked up. “Momma want and eggs too!”
Lyr simply let Kida pull her forward, and stood next to the younger girl. Satin chirped and nudged Lyr a bit. She was a queen! Any other firelizards would simply be her pawns. Friends, yes. But foremost, they would be pawns. Wave of reassurance and love was sent through their link, emboldening Lyr some. Reaching up, fingers would stroke Satin' s he ad for a moment before she looked back to Paget. “Lyr, Dragon candidate.” Her voice was soft, but thankfully, loud enough to be heard.
Kida simply looked up to her mother and clapped her hands in giddy appreciation. “More itts! More itts for S'Tin to play with!”
– Tasia huffed a bit as she was pushed, people leaving having no courtesy it seemed. The young woman fumed a bit. She was standing there! How dare they. Crossing her arms over her chest, Tasia moved to a better spot to look at the hearth. Padget rubbed her the wrong way, but she was in charge. For now at least. She listened as people came forward to claim an egg, and she debated whether she really wanted one or not.
What if she hated it? What if it cause a lot of trouble? She really had to weigh it out. She listened as more and more people came forward. Several were fellow candidates. Surely, if they thought they had the time, she would too. “Tasia, Dragon Candidate.” Her voice was rather flat, with a slightly sarcastic tone. With luck, she would get a flitter that would meld perfectly with her.

There was some snarky commentary going around, some shoving, and it didn't at all sit well with Cleo. She looked over at Weslin and Kestrel, but kept her mouth shut. As much as she hated conflict, this was one time where trying to cool them down would just create more. Instead, she smooshed E'rin against her side, smiling down at him. He looked a little confused, but Cleo looked back up. Names? Paget wanted names. She'd seen the harper around, of course, but she never had been the most pleasant of company.
"Cleo," she said. "Journeywoman Healer!" The title was a bright addition; she was always proud of her job. Beside her, the messy-haired boy was quiet. He seemed uncomfortable with the healer's arm around his shoulders, but Cleo just squished him again. "Name, kiddo."
Briefly, E'rin wasn't sure if he should really get another flit. Would his current flit even like a friend? Probably not. Levi didn't like anybody. He didn't like Rats, especially since Rats always chased him, and he didn't like Mitzi and Merps and Jarith because they were all too happy or liked the water too much or something silly. E'rin wasn't even sure if Levi liked him. He fed the brown, sure, and Levi at the food, but he didn't know if Levi actually appreciated it. The brown was a big downer, really. Maybe another flit would cheer him up. Yeah, that seemed like a good try. He nodded and was ready to get an egg. Cleo nudged him again.
"Oh! Right!" he squeaked. "Um, I'm E'rin." There was a pause and another nudge from Cleo. "Of White Jarith! Oh, weyrling. Right. Weyrling. That's... that's what you wanted to know..." He scowled and lowered his voice. "Oh, be quiet, E'rin, you're so stupid," he hissed to himself. Cleo gave him an amused look, and then turned her calmly excited attention back to Paget. She'd wait patiently for her turn. [/blockquote]

Kestrel laughed, she couldn't help it. She knew she'd been putting on a bit of a bravado because she was annoyed at being pushed aside, but this guy was clearly full of himself! She was finding it hard to hold back her grin as he mocked her. Boys could be so egotisical. Glancing at his bare arms she asked sweetly, "Not too cold are you dear? Better not risk getting sick if you want to be well enough to care for a flit!". Part of her would have enjoyed having a little argument with this guy, but there were eggs to be claimed and in comparison he seemed less important now. He was quite amusing though. To answer his ridiculous question she replied, "I deserve a flit just as much as the next candidate, however I don't need to shove my way past others to make myself feel important." She spoke with a calm, almost dismissive air, not very riled or angry. She quite liked his arrogance, it was enjoyable to banter with someone for once.
Turning briefly at a commanding voice Kestrel heard something about an order of rank and stating it before the eggs would be given out. Well she was a candidate, and she knew that wasn't very high on the list, but she still hoped there would be an egg left for her. It didn't bother her at all what colour she impressed, so long as she didn't fail at that critical moment. She opened her mouth to call her name when the boy who had pushed past her shouted his loudly and smirked at her. That look in his eyes! Kestrel narrowed hers, fixed him with an unblinking stare and clearly spoke her own name and rank without looking away, "Kestrel, Dragon Candidate."
She fervently hoped that they both recieved eggs and knew that her fire lizard would outshine his in every way possible. A smile curled the side of her lips, she hoped they would continue to "bump" into eachother like this.

D'ix could hardly hear through all the noise. He barely understood what it was he would have to do in order to obtain one of the eggs, so he waited and watched the first few people closely when they gave their names and ranks to Paget. He frowned deeply, rather hoping this was a free-for-all instead. If that harper knew anything about him, and it was likely that she had, she would refuse to give him one. But hasn't he proven already that he was capable of taking care of a flit? Where was Wormtail? Wormtail, get over here now, he ordered in his harshest mental voice.
The pathetic-looking Black appeared just above the crowd and dove towards his human, landing very delicately on the boy's shoulder. He held a very sizable chunk of meat in his beak that he was told to bring earlier, in case that was the very reason he was summoned. With tiny eyes fixed attentively on his human, Wormtail wanted to know how to best serve his master.
"Eat that up; they're not hatching today," he told the flit. Wormtail complied and shifted on the boy's shoulder, so he could hold the meat in his claws and chew off pieces of it. It was way too big for him to attempt to swallow in one bite, but he was very wary about getting any blood on his human's shoulder. He kept licking the chunk after every nimble while eyeballing the crowd like a timid house mouse. One good scare and the Black would take off, apologizing to his master all the while. No need to upset him. He wouldn't dream of it.
The Cyanrider wanted to show off how capable he was with the full-grown flitter at his side. He wasn't the kindest master, by any stretch of the imagination, but Wormtail was naturally loyal to him despite all the terrible things he had done to the poor creature. D'ix was proud of that; the firelizard he owned was the very first being in all of Dalibor who feared him enough to respect him. On top of all that, he kept coming back.
But the rider was here to pick up another flitter--one that would make up for a few of Wormtail's fatal flaws. He hoped it wouldn't be one of the more flighty types. It would have been useless to Impress a flitter that didn't remain loyal to him.
Once he felt he was at the top of the game, he brought himself forward, cutting in front of a couple of people. "D'ix, Wingrider of Cyan Ressouth." His voice didn't even sound like it belonged to him when it uttered a title and rank like that. There were no insults of any kind. Yet he didn't look particularly friendly. He looked awkward pretending to be. Maybe they couldn't take his dragon away for beating the tar out of other people and being a jackass, but they could revoke privileges such as these.

Amisi bounced up and down, up and down, so excited, excited, excited. F'izzard eggies! More f'izzard eggies! The little girl wormed her way through the crowd, having dutifully followed the crecheworkers (for once), back from the beach, not scampering off to join her Pappi and his Hermeth. Too important to go see her Pappi. It was f'izzard eggies! Maybe she could surprise Pappi with a f'izzard egg, or get another f'iend or two for Stripe.
The blue whistled grouchily from his place on her shoulder, claws tight in her hair - but not too tight - as she ducked under another elbow and then got down on her knees to crawl out from between a tallperson's legs. They were a very tall person, yes they were. In the small ring now there, Amisi looked around warily. Lots of tall people she didn't know. Oh dear. Stripe crooned at her consolingly. His little one would be fine, she would. He was there, he would keep her safe, and any grandchildren she got for him would help keep her safe too.
Amisi looked around the open area again, and spotted red. Red hair! Oh, Osro had red hair! She grinned and skipped over to her sort-of-friend, head cocked to the side as she stopped to view the tallpeople there with him. She didn't know them, but oh well. Maybe Pappi did, and she could ask him who they were later. Oh, people were saying their names and stuff to get eggies. She'd better do that too, if she wanted an eggie!
"Amisi, weywbwat!" She piped up, bouncing again up and down, up and down on her toes. Maybe she'd get an eggie, maybe, maybe. If she didn't, she still had Stripe, and Stripe was a nice Stripe, so very Stripey-stripe-stripe. He had a stripe, was why he was called Stripe, her grumpy (Pappi said) grumpy, grump-grump Stripe. The little girl smiled up at Paget, stopping her bouncing to rock back and forth on her heels, turning to Osro.
"Hi, Oswo! You found lotsa eggies!"

Valha slid her hand down to wrap around Nara's, bouncing from foot to foot in excitement. Open call for eggs! On her shoulder, Hati perked up at Hers' thoughts; new flitt? Why new flitt? Wasn't she enough? She was perfect! Why new flitt?
Valha shushed her, sending her the image of a tiny colorless flitt bringing her food while she sat on Hers' bed, and then another of the same colorless imaginary flitt helping clean Hati's back, reaching all the spots she couldn't reach on her own. Valha felt bad about filling Hati's head with such ideas, but it wasn't like the silly green would remember them for long anyway.
Hati blasted Hers with approval of this new flitt plan after Hers made it clear that it wasn't because Hati wasn't enough, it was because Hati was so special that Hers needed another flitt to properly treat Hati like the queen green that she was. Hers was so wonderful, so thoughtful! She trilled sweetly in Valha's ear, butting her head against the girl's cheek, suddenly very interested in the eggs again, and this time not for eating. One of them would be she and Hers' pet!
Valha, while Hati was distracted being excited over her 'pet', eyeballed the crowd, getting a rough idea of how many people there were still there, and whispered to Nara, “I think, even being near the bottom for getting an egg, we'll both still be able to get an egg each.” She rubbed her free hand against Hati's side, and continued, “I want another flitt, no lie, but if you end up with a dud, since we probably will get the questionable eggs if there are enough, I'll let you Impress to my egg. That way you get a flitt, no matter what.”
With a smile for her roommate, Valha yanked their hands into the air and sang out her name, “Valha, Dragon Candidate!” She waited for Nara to do the same, not releasing her hand.

Emboldened by the relatively small number of people in line before him, H'cup stepped forward. "H'cup, rider of black Tuthleth," he politely told the woman taking charge of things. Granted, black Tuthleth wasn't going to be happy with his rider when he woke up and learned about the newest inhabitant of their weyr, but H'cup would cross that bridge when he came to it. for now, he had to get the egg, and he fervently hoped that not many other riders showed up. There was already a wingsecond ahead of him, and even most other wingriders outranked him, due to his youth and relatively low-ranking color.
There were a pretty large number of eggs, though. A fair number of other riders could probably show up without bumping him completely off the list, though the candidates and weyrlings who had already spoken up might find themselves out of luck, poor kids. Still, eventually they'd probably be wingriders themselves, and then they could enjoy the benefits of rank, such as it was. Hopefully everyone who wanted an egg would be able to get one. There were plenty of people in the weyr who already had enough firelizards or didn't want one at all, that should bring the number of people asking down. H'cup hoped so, anyway.

Naraevhyn's heart raced as it was announced that the eggs were open for all. Of course, it was prioritized by rank, but still! She had a chance at a flitter egg!! The prospect thrilled her. She bit her lower lip as she stared at the eggs, a wistful look in her eyes. She thought of the baby firelizards within and then looked around, looking slightly crestfallen as she saw how many people were milling around. It didn't look like there were enough eggs!
She looked at Valha as she spoke, her brow knitting in confusion. Why would Valha give up her egg? That didn't seem fair. Altruistic, sure, but Nara hadn't done anything to deserve that sort of favour. And then Valha yanked her hand in the air while calling out her own name. Instantly, Naraevhyn blushed, trying to tug her hand away. Realizing Valha wasn't going to let her step back like she wanted to, she flashed her roommate a smile and spoke up.
"Naraevhyn, Dragon Candidate," she said, speaking as loud as she dared. She wasn't as loud as Valha by any means, but she was still loud enough to be heard. She scooted close to Valha and whispered in her roommate's ear.
"I owe you ever so much for this kindness, my friend. When we are on the sands, I will ensure no dragon harms you." She smiled again, then decided to hide behind Valha.

If a plane crashed into my room, I wouldn't even flinch, I couldn't try to move, My mind is on you.
"Yeah, I did;" Osro said to Amisi, beaming at her. Fahra smiled with amusement at her nephew and his friend. She made no move to stop him when he picked up two small eggs and passed them right to Amisi. Paget noticed, but she put no effort into stopping him, instead focusing on memorizing the names and ranks of those before her with her keen harper skills. "Brats before candidates, sorry, laddybucks and ladybucks;" Fahra drawled with a shrug to those assembled, some small attempt on her part to maintain order. Or possibly incite chaos. Eriputh approved of that line of thought. Rile them up! Start a fight! None of them could do much harm! With her dragon egging her on, Fahra did instigate a bit. She leaned down to Osro's level to whisper loudly in his ear. "Eggs for the nice bronzeweyrling too;" she said with a wink in G'len's direction.
Osro passed two eggs, a smaller one and one of moderate size, to the weyrling before Paget interjected. "Knock it off, you two;" she told them, not about to lose control of the situation. Afzal appeared and twined himself about Osro's neck with a hiss, but the redheaded boy was content to settle next to Amisi. Fahra leaned back against the wall next to the hearth and looked innocent. With that settled, Paget started picking up eggs herself and handing them out, because everyone seemed to have said their piece. A large one went to H'to as a wingsecond, then a smaller one went to the newly arrived Jasra as a redrider. Then she passed a moderate-sized egg to Cleo, giving the journeywoman the stiffest of smiles. D'ix received a fair-sized egg, H'cup a large one, and then the harper stopped to consider who remained. She'd missed one rider. She handed R'cat a small one.
Having long ago given up on precedent, Paget gave out eggs to the remaining weyrlings first. E'rin and C'dog, the only two present aside from G'len or Fahra, got moderate-sized ones. Once they had their eggs in their hands, she waved them back. "Alright, candidates, come forward. Play nice;" she grumbled at them, not particularly enthusiastic or particular about the task that she was completing. There would likely be a few disappointed faces in the crowd, but not too many and she didn't really care. If they wanted to argue, she welcomed them to try. At that point, the rest of the eggs were going to the cluster of candidates now in front of the tall harper. "Wher in the front, dragon in the back. I'll know the difference." She waited with marked impatient for them to get themselves in order, then looked them over with lips pursed in eternal annoyance.
And if the floor gave way to my shoes, I wouldn't try to fly, I can't explain what it would feel, I just feel you.

Kida watched as the eggs were handed out, her brow furrowing some. Why was no one giving one to her momma? Rank was still a bit difficult for her to understand, so she had yet to grasp that these people had more say than her mother. Small foot stamped on the ground as she glared at the eggs, willing one to magically float to her mother. But alas, that wasn't the case.
Lyr simply looked down and smiled to her daughter, chuckling softly. She could feel the aggravation and annoyance radiating from her daughter. Hand was placed on the younger girl's head and fingers dug into her hair to massage her scalp comfortably. She did not mind being last. In fact, Lyr stood back when the candidates were called forward. She would be last, others deserved the eggs more than she could. “Do not worry my little flit, Mommy has Satin, even if she does not get an egg.
– Tasia was the first to stride forward when the candidates were called. Brats before candidates! She doubted any of the children could wipe their own nose, let alone care for a flitter. She seethed a bit as the Wher candidates were allowed to go first. Whers. They were not even as lovely as dragons. Sure, she thanked them for keeping them safe at night. But who would willingly bind themselves to one, especially if they could ride a dragon? She didn't quite understand, So she hung back, allowing the where candidates to go first before following close behind them, intent on being first to get herself a firelizard egg. [/size]

Corian watched as the eggs were passed out. A larger one went to one of the riders. If he had only impressed at the last hatching! He sighed a little as he saw the pile deplete a little. He was usually a glass half full kind of person but that didn't mean that he didn't feel a little resentment for the fact that the eggs were being given according to rank... He guessed that once he was at the same level or so he wouldn't be concerned about rank. It was a cycle he supposed... Everyone went through it over the course of their life and, besides all that, he would be happy with any flitter really...
When the Harper called the candidates he moved behind a girl whom he was certain was a dragon candidate. They waited pariently behind some of the wher candidates. He noticed the fact that there were only a few of the wher candidates present anyway. It lightened his mood a little that he was not going to have to wait for about thirty people and then miss out...
--- --- --- ---
Kire watched the eggs get handed out. How wonderful it was that the young weyrbrats would have the opportunity for some responsibility. When some of them were ready to become riders they would also be able to have the knowledge gained from raising a flitter. They would all chip in with each other and none of the little creatures would be mistreated. This she gathered from the caring manner the boy passed the eggs to the little girl. She knew that the little lizzards would be in good hands... She didn't even really notice the sizes of the eggs. She wasn't exactly that cluey about things that happened before her. She never really judged a creature by the size of its egg...
She almost skipped for joy as they asked the Wher candidates forward first. She wasn't even sure whether there were any other wher candidates present. She had stopped listening to the names distracted by the children and the eggs being handed out. She was already practically at the front and lined up as the first Wher candidate in the line. She waited patiently with an excited and grateful smile wondering if she was indeed the only Wher candidate present. She wondered briefly where Camea was... Perhaps she should ask for an egg for her roommate... She looked about for a moment but it was almost impossible to see through the crowd. She decided to just wait where she was to be given an egg... She didn't think they would let her take two...

Candidates had a go! Jaghatai felt relieved, admitting to himself that he was not born to be a thief. Stating his rank and name he waited impatiently for everyone else to do the same and then watched with unease as all the other ranks got handed out eggs. Dragon candidates last? Come on, there was no hatching in sight, it wasn't like dragonets could pop out of nowhere any day! He kept those thoughts to himself though, he didn't want to mess with the harper before he had received an egg and he really didn't care how big his was as long as he got one. In the end is was only fair that the others had a bigger chance, he pondered, since they were about to get the real thing instead of the snack-sized version. And the weyrbrats had found them, soo.... Ugh, he hated sharing.
Grumbling he took a step back into the line, careful to have the wher candidates in front of him. With a look like that on her face he really didn't want to mess with Paget.

Ara stood next to H'to. She was thinking, just thinking. Part of her wanted to say her name, after all a firelizard would be nice. The other part of her remembered the package from her aunt that had just arrived that morning. She had hinted in her letters that she'd come across some hadn't she AraMine. Avirith crooned as she craned her neck to see the firelizard candidates.
The black firelizard was still settled on her shoulder, and he chirped happily. Looking around, he chirped again and flew off. Avirith crooned a good bye as well and laid her head back down. The firelizard, she saw, was flying off in Her's direction.
"Oh, that sounds wonderful. Perhaps I'll wait though...my aunt did just send me a package. She keeps saying how she wished I could have another little friend along side Avirith." The green rider turned to look at said dragon. Avi would you mind waiting? If she didn't send an egg then we could always buy one. Avirith made a silent noise of agreement in her rider's head. It was then that the black flitt lighted down on Ara's shoulder. The green rider made a sound of surprise, but quickly regained her composure. "What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be with your owner...whoever that is?" Ara petted the black as she cooed.
Turning back, Ara addressed the blue rider again. "How have you been H'to?" She liked to keep track of her friends, and she did think of the rider as her friend. Avirith looked around for H'to's blue dragon. Shouldn't he be near His too? Honestly, the green was looking forward to the blue's flattery...even though she'd never admit it to anyone. ____________________________________________________ Larka stood at the back of the crowd as people surged forward to state their ranks. Do I really want another flitt right now? Honestly, the answer was a no. Hopefully at the next hatching she'd get a dragon of her own, and then she'd have her hands full. No, not saying her name and just watching would be better. After all she had Tris. Larka started to look around, where was that little black?
The firelizard in question had comfortably curled around Avirith's neck and shoulder. Higher up now on his new green friend, Tris was able to see the whole of the crowd. His eyes swirled happily. Would His get another friend? Sadly, he crooned as His backed away from the crowd. Tris didn't understand. Did His not want another friend? No, it mustn't be that surely. Chirping quickly to the big green, he flew down toward His.
That was of course when his curiosity kicked in. The green had looked toward Hers, probably as they were talking. His could wait a few more minutes. Tris wanted to meet the dragon's rider. Back-winging to slow his descent the black firelizard chirped happily as he landed on the rider's shoulder.

Kestrel watched, heart in mouth, as the harper began meticulously passing out the eggs to the higher ranks. Half of her was worried that there wouldn't be enough eggs left for the candidates, the other half was worried there would be. Still struggling with the internal battle of wills she shook her head and tried to focus. She did want an egg, she knew she did. But she also knew that it would be easier for to say she'd tried and just hadn't been destined for one if the eggs ran out. Such a simple escape route from responsibility. But who would she be fooling? Just herself. And at this stage there was no point in that anymore.
No, she was definitely here for a reason and one of those eggs was marked for her, it had to be. As she gazed at each passing person holding a new egg all to themselves she noticed that there was no preference regarding size. Some of the riders got large ones, some got small. There was no favouritism at all! That was good. She wondered what kind she would get, what would she prefer? A small fire lizard who would stay close and could hide in her jacket? Or a large one that could protect her if she got scared? Maybe it didn't matter, she should be happy with any at all.
The eggs were dwindling in number as the dragon candidates filed behind the wher candidates. Hoping against hope there would be one left for her Kestrel took her place in the line. She was so close now. Nearly there.

If he hadn't already had Magpie, Jerrith might have been a little more inclined to... something... when a weyrling got to cut in line. What was the point in even setting an order for such things if it wasn't going to be followed? Even if it was someone else who'd undermined that instruction... well. It might sting a little if he was the last one in line when the eggs ran out.
For now, though, he held his peace. Besides, he needed to focus to keep his headache at bay.
He quietly but resolutely took his place with the other dragon candidates. Patient, yet eager, he kept shuffling forward as the line advanced, occasionally sneaking a glance ahead at the pile of eggs. Would luck be with him today? There were only so many eggs, and so many other candidates had spoken up...
But lucky or not, he'd have tried. He wasn't going to flee, wasn't going to succumb to the pounding in his skull and run for fresh air - not now, not when he was so close.

Darcy had impatiently waited her turn among the masses of candidates that where in the crowd, eyes showing her anger that she had to wait for her turn. The weyr ran on ranks as it always had done, and as unfair as that seemed to the teenager she had to accept it. Shifting her weight from foot to foot Darcy watched as the dragonriders moved forward to claim some of the eggs resting in the hearth, and she only became all the more agitated as she watched the eggs getting handed out. She was worried that by the time the candidates had a turn that no eggs would be left. Grumbling lightly she turned, moved through the gathered crowd to vent her frustrations, her eyes occasionally glancing toward where Osro was handing out the eggs.
It seemed like forever before Osro called out that it was the turn of the candidates to get eggs, and with a swift movement Darcy moved in to line. She didn't even care if she was cutting in front of anyone else, all she wanted was to get an egg before they where all gone! Moving forward with the line Darcy passed the time by imagining what kind of firelizard she might end up with. So distracted was she that she almost didn't notice when she was finally in front of Osro, and the candidate literally jumped out of her skin when the person behind her poked her in the back impatiently.
Coughing lightly Darcy tipped her head lightly before giving her name and rank "Darcy, Dragon candidate" once that was done she gave the person behind her a glare, then stepped to one side to wait for one of the eggs to be handed to her.

Grinning for a moment at the eggs getting passed out, as, even with doubles going out, there still looked to be enough eggs for everyone who was now moving forward, Valha turned, pulling on Nara so that her roommate couldn't hide behind her, “Nara, that's too much! I appreciate it, but it doesn't equal out at all, if you must have it even out.” Valha looked at Hati thoughtfully, then turned back to her dark-haired friend with a grin, “How about, instead, the next time Hati flies, you watch the eggs until we're sure they're all duds. I hate doing that, and I think it'd be more than equal. How abut it?”
While she was speaking, she'd gotten behind her friend and planted her hands on the small of the other girl's back, marching her forward and into the line for the dragon candidates. She then switched her grip to Nara's shoulders, keeping her friend in front of her in the line. She leaned forward to whisper over her shoulder, “We don't know how hard the eggs are, so when you get yours, cup it protectively with both hands, and don't squeeze it at all if it feels squishy or soft. We'll hurry to get a basket of sand, unless you'd rather individual pots; either way, I'll try to bribe Hati into actually tending them for once.”
Hati knew the word 'bribe'. She chirped questioningly at Hers, and received back the mental picture of her curled around two of the pet eggs in a basket of sand. She drew back a little; why tend eggs? Until Hers followed up the previous image with one of her staying with the eggs until they hatched out her new pet, and then being rewarded with...half a wheel of cheese?
Hati would guard those eggs like eggs had never been guarded before!
Valha relayed the back and forth between herself and Hati in a low voice, broken a little by her laughing quietly, “She'll tend them as long as I keep reminding her of the reward; I'd do this more often, but I just don't have the funds to bribe her into tending all of her own clutches.”

H'cup cradled the egg the harper handed to him in both hands, giving it an already-besotted smile as he moved away from the crush of people, being careful of how he stepped and where he placed his feet. This was no time for his clumsiness to make an appearance. He didn't want to risk breaking the egg. And as long as he was thinking of the egg… He'd need sand, and a basket or pot to put it in until it hatched. He carefully transferred the egg so that he was only holding it with one hand and ducked into the kitchen, grabbing the first suitable container he saw and then ducking back out before any of the cooks or drudges could notice and yell at him.
For sand, well, there wasn't any place better than the Hatching Ground, and since there weren't any clutches on the Sands, H'cup felt safe in making his way across the Bowl to the main entrance of the Hatching Grounds, carefully going down the steps until he reached the sands themselves. He nestled his precious egg into the sands for a moment while he scooped some into the container he had grabbed, and then gently placed the egg in along with it. "I'm going to take good care of you," he whispered to it, determined to make that statement true. He would take good care of it, and then it would Hatch and he and Tuthleth would have a fire-lizard to look after.
We'll what?
And Tuthleth had apparently woken up. Good. The weyrbrats found a firelizard clutch, he told the black. Could you come give me a ride back up?
I don't want a firelizard. Give it back, Tuthleth replied, even as he spiralled down from their weyr to land in front of H'cup.
Sure you do. He'll be adorable. Or she, H'cup added distractedly, trying to work out how he could mount without worrying about dropping the egg. Tuthleth pointedly refrained from offering any suggestions or doing anything that might be construed as helping, but eventually, H'cup managed to get up onto his neck, still clutching the container with the egg and most of the sand. He gave a satisfied smile. Back to the weyr buddy. Gently.
Tuthleth snorted and sent H'cup a very clear image of how he would like to return to their weyr, involving several loops, but the actual flight was smooth and straight. The sand barely even shifted. H'cup gave Tuthleth an affectionate pat as he slid down carefully, rushing to his small hearth to place the egg container in front of it. "There," he said with satisfaction. Everything all set. All he had to do was turn it regularly and wait for it to Hatch.

Nara blushed as Valha manhandled her, though she was secretly grateful that her roommate wouldn't allow her to just fade into obscurity. She patted Valha's hand on her shoulder and smiled.
"Okay, I can tend Hati's clutch," she said, giggling softly. She looked at Hati, then reached up to pet the flitter. "My flit will be your friend and will leave your food alone," she said. "I know you adore your food, you little scamp." Nara walked along in the Candidates' line in front of Valha, guided by her roommate's hands. She listened to Valha's instructions, nodding once.
"Alright. Hold it protectively, but do not squish. I think it would be easier if they were in the same basket," she stated. She grinned at Valha on finding out Hati's answer to her bonded's bribe. "Can you tell Hati I shall give her some cheese if she guards my egg, or did you already include it in your promise? If you did, I shall also remind her of the reward." The dark-haired girl smiled warmly, her green eyes holding mirth. She looked up to Paget and then over to Osro and Amisi, smiling. Of course the kids and the riders would get first choice, but it looked like she was actually going to get an egg!
"Valha, I think they have enough for us. Look, there are still plenty and it looks like all the riders who wanted one got one. Ohh, I hope I get a blue egg!" she whispered fervently to Valha. It was the first time she'd ever expressed such a preference, and she blushed slightly. "Of course with a dragon, I shall be pleased with whatever appears, but I really hope my flit is a blue, only because my favorite colour is blue." She laughed at herself then, shaking her head. "I sound like a silly wherry."

H’to waited and watched as the eggs began to get passed out, a huge smile on his face. He didn’t have to wait long, for before he knew it, he was handed a quite large egg. Dia immediately dropped to H’to’s arms and wrapped herself around the egg that was in his hands. She warbled happily. H’to rolled his eyes and adjusted his grip on the egg so that he was more comfortable. Dia’s eyes whirled happily, until the black flitter showed up. She sat up straight then climbed to the head of Hers and snapped her maw at the black flitter. Hers was Hers and egg was Hers too! Not little black males! She hissed and snapped her jaws again, letting her talons sink into H’to’s head. ”I cannot turn up, OUCH, this opportunity,” He smiled and winced as Dia’s talons sank into his head. ”I guess two girls isn’t enough for me,” He chuckled as he used one hand to lift Dia’s front talon’s from his head. The little green looked down at the shaggy black hair of Hers, crooned, then wiggled her way back down to the large egg H’to held. H’to then made his way back a few steps, away from the flitter crazed crowd that had gathered. His blue eyes looked at the egg, a smile on his face. ”This egg is larger than Amour’s egg. I don’t remember how large Dia’s egg was…” He was more talking to himself, but he didn’t really care if anyone thought he was crazy.
Lanith crooned to himself from his perch as he listened to the thoughts of His. So you got your egg, Mine. You best be happy! Lanith crooned. Oh, trust me, I am! Ara is here, that means… Oh, I know, Mine. I can see her! She is a fine green, Mine. Why can she not fly now? I want to chase her! I would win her, you know! Lanith sat up from his perch and stretched his scarred wings. Lanith, you haven’t won a flight since we came to Dalibor. Hate to say it. Must you be harsh? There is a first for everything! And besides, it drives you just as crazy as it does me! You have not been in bed with any one! Lanith’s croons turned to a laughing type of croon as he took to the air. H’to snorted as he shut out his blue. Stupid blue and his points. ”If your green is anything like my Lanith, then it will take more than one flitter to distract her,” H’to said to Ara with a smile. Lanith snorted and let his wings carry him to the green. Why, what brings you to this fine place, Fine green? Lanith crooned as he flopped onto the ground next to Avirith. His eyes swirled with happy colors as he held his head high.

Avirith turned to the Lanith as the blue came by. Crooning the green picked up her head and ruffled her dark wings. The sun was shining pleasantly, making the shades of moss green on her hide glisten. Hello, Lanith. I am here with Mine. I wanted to see the eggs, such pretty things, and all the little ones dancing around too. The green warbled as she looked over at the different firelizards fluttering around. How have you and Yours been, Lanith? The dragon looked at the blue rider next to Hers and gave a babyish chirp. I like that I don't have to worry about Mine around Yours, he would know better than to hurt her.
Ara laughed briefly at her dragon's protectiveness. Of course H'to wouldn't hurt me you silly green. The dragon didn't respond though, too busy preening herself in front of the blue. Rolling her eyes at her dragon's actions, Ara blushed a bit. Did Avirith really feel so concerned about such things? Giving herself a mental shake, the rider looked over at her companion. "The egg looks big enough to even hatch a brown!" Ara exclaimed.
The black firelizard on her shoulder ruffled his wings unhappy with the green flitt's hissing. Petting the little black, Ara pulled him off and set him on a nearby table. "Best find Yours little one." She cooed softly before turning back. "And you!" She said sternly, pointing a finger in Dia's direction, but far away enough that the green couldn't bite. "You should be more pleasant to others. Yes, you're protecting you're knew sibling. However, that gives you no right to be so mean to someone who was just saying hello." Straightening back up Ara felt Avirith give a little hiss toward the green to back up her rider's words. ____________________________________________
Tris flapped away from the table after the Big Green's rider put him there. The little green was not very pleasant. He had only wanted to see Big Green's rider, not the egg. What would he want with an egg that wasn't even hatched, let alone His'? Shaking his black and violet head, Tris winged over to His. The girl was sitting at another table nearby. Her hand on her heart-shaped face, her long auburn hair as usual forming a veil around her. The black settled on her shoulders and curled around her neck. Crooning, his eyes swirled a slow mix of colors.
"Where have you been?" Larka questioned her firelizard. The black flitt chirped and spread his wings, his head turning in the direction of a girl not much older than herself standing next to a man. "Talking to the riders have you now?" The candidate asked. Getting up and fixing her hair with a few quick run through of her slender fingers, Larka headed in the two rider's direction. Waiting until they quited, the candidate cleared her throat and placed out her hand. "Hi, I'm Larka. I think you've already met Tris." The candidate forced herself to meet the riders' eyes and let her more confident side take over...though that wasn't saying much in a real life situation. I always thought meeting riders would be less nerve racking. To think, I might be flying with them one day.

Upon receiving an egg without issue, D'ix did give the little oval a squint wrought with silent disapproval. There was no way this little package would hatch a big flitter, so he would have to hope for the personality to make up for it. It wasn't the smallest of the found clutch, but compared to the one that was handed to a rider just before him, it was nothing of greater significance than its brothers and sisters. It'd have to do. If he tried to argue now, he could be easily revoked the opportunity to leave with anything at all. But the risk he was taking now nearly drove him to do so anyhow. What if this hatched another Wormtail? One was more than enough. What if it hatched a Ressouth? He'd probably let it go wild, or kill it. Then he remembered that he had a choice, unlike his previous Impressions. Wormtail needed him and Ressouth was bound to him. This flitter could be left to its own devices if it bothered to show any of the same characteristics.
D'ix decided to keep this egg, holding it with a delicacy that was rarely ever utilized for anything else. Wormtail ducked his head to get a peek, but he didn't dare to ask his master for any favors. He didn't want to be a burden while he was being allowed the opportunity to sit on his shoulder. The Cyanrider began to ease his way out of the crowd and strode towards his weyr.
What an ignorant woman. She ought to have given you a larger egg. Ressouth was already on her ledge, getting to her feet and nosing at her rider and the precious package he attained. Did she not see that pathetic flitter of yours? You deserved far better than that. I would have given it back.
"Yeah, well it's not up to you, is it?" D'ix replied rather defensively. He felt rather attuned to smaller creatures, even though he had hoped for a larger one this time. They always reminded him of himself and his constant struggle to stay alive in the big, bad world. He didn't have a hearth in his room to keep the egg warm, but he had furs that would suffice for now. If he found the commons unoccupied, he would take it there later to warm it there.
Ressouth curled up and sat back down, examining the tiny thing. She didn't want another Wormtail, that was for sure. What a sorry excuse for a wretched species. It ought to be like her, so perhaps the two of them could better talk sense into D'ix. We should still file a complaint about it. You should be respected by now. This isn't respect--it's an insult.
"Ressouth, SHUT. UP. I don't care. I don't care if it's Green, or Pink, or Black. I just hope it's nothing like you."
The Cyan grumbled, turning away from her rider and letting him blow off steam. He was mad. She could tell. She was right after all, so she could forgive him. He was just a little upset and didn't mean the things he said when it got to his head.

Weslin watched as others received eggs, he knew that candidates for both dragons and weyrs weren't going to be first... a flit could distract them from all the chores, and dragon wishing they had to do. He'd heard about the handing out of flit eggs, but had never actually gone to one, afraid that if he had a flit, that a dragon wouldn't want him. In his ripe old age (well, for standing, not for... life), he was starting to take his opportunities as they came, and a possible flit egg was one of them. Of course... the fact that he was near the end of the line, and there wasn't an unlimited supply of eggs... and some people were getting two... well. It did unfortunately make him nervous. He was even too nervous to say anything back to the girl who had mentioned his arms being cold. Tugging on the sleeves, making sure they were down by his wrists, he tried not to think about it.
Of course, not thinking about it, he got distracted thinking about not thinking about it, and most of the other dragon candidates were in line by the time he was scrambling for a spot... and with the looks, he knew he wasn't going to be able to cut in. So to the back he went... well, almost the back.
With every egg handed out, with every step forward, he was trying to see around others. But at his height it was easier said than done, and he was sure that some of these taller people were half dragon themselves, no one should be that big that they would be like a small mountain to climb. How many eggs were left? Was that woman just handing them out like sweets? What if he got there and there was none left? The sudden bitter sting of possibly rejection hit him like a blow, and he almost thought of just turning around and walking out of the room. Reject them before they rejected you.
Something kept Weslin's feet firm to the ground, kept him stepping forwards, in hopes of getting an egg, getting a flit. Hope hurt though, but it was really all he could do. Eggs got passed out, and he was almost there. Were there any left? For some odd reason there was a strange feeling of guilt. Because there were some behind him. What if he got the last egg? It wasn't like the flit had a pre-destined person to go to, and it could have just as easily gone to the one behind him, and it wouldn't know the different. Shards, why all of a sudden did his emotions have to remind him he was human?

It's amazing, How you make your face just like a wall, How you take your heart and turn it off, How I turn my head and lose it all.
"Shut up, you lot;" Paget snapped at them after a moment, temper running out while she surveyed them. She picked up two of the smaller eggs and shoved them at Kire. "Go share;" she ordered. Off to the side, Fahra stifled a snicker. Osro was oblivious. He'd spotted Kida and was waving at her. Glancing down at the young boy, Paget followed his gaze. She shoved another small egg at the girl's mother, then quickly went about placating the others with a scowl on her face. A large one went to Jaghatai, another to Tasia. The rest were of fairly moderate of size, only comparable to each other. The two smallest of that lot went to Jerrith and Kestrel. She hurriedly waved them off, telling them to make room. That left her with Corian, Naraevhyn, Valha, Darcy, and Weslin, all candidates. She passed one egg to each, then looked down to examine how many were left.
Just one. She picked it up, surveyed the remaining lot, and then shoved it at Valha. "Now go away;" the harper ordered, looking at Fahra. The weyrling smiled back at her, innocent as could be. Paget responded with a glower. Sighing wistfully, Fahra scooped Osro up and limped off, sliding onto Eriputh's back outside to rest her leg and smile as Osro giggled down at her. The lazing weyrling was going to be sad when her dragon got too tall for her to merely roll onto her. Of course, Eriputh would also be much stronger and more stable a perch at that point. Paget remained standing by the hearth for a moment, watching the others leave or fetch pots for their eggs. Then she simply left, heading back towards the craft rooms. If the brats were all busy, it meant that she could perhaps get a moment alone to make some music, preferably not about flitters.
It's unnerving, How just one move puts me by myself, There you go just trusting someone else, Now I know I put us both through hell.

Kire couldn't hide the exhileration that passed over her face when Paget handed her two eggs with the order that she should share them. Two eggs! She had one for Camea now! She was almost breathless as she backed away. She held the two eggs with such amazing care, pulling the small objects close to her chest to keep them warm. "Thank you." She spoke quietly knowing that Paget had moved on.
She couldn't believe that Camea and herself would have two eggs! Three Firelizards in their room. She walked out of the hall with growing excitement, quickly but cautiously making her way back to her room. She wondered whether Camea would be there yet to give the egg to. She couldn't wait!
--- --- --- ---
Corian watched as the Wher candidate, a girl was passed two eggs. He felt a pang of annoyance but looked back at the small pile. There were enough for all of them! He would be receiving an egg then. He smiled as the Harper moved to the other candidates, himself included. He took the egg she gave him, a reasonable one... Well, as reasonable as Corian would have ever wanted and stepped back, nodding his thanks. He looked at the soft egg he held in his hands, lightly but with the strength required that it would never fall or be knocked from his hands and began leaving the hall. He would place it somewhere safe, somewhere it would be warm. He just wished he could have gotten one for Ezekiel. He would just have to share his firelizard. Maybe, if it was a female, he could give one of her eggs to Ez if she ever clutched.
He walked from the hall with a smile on his face. No matter what it was that the egg contained he was thrilled to be given the chance to care for something. He had been feeling a little down since the last hatching but here he was, with his own creature to care for and he knew that next hatching he wouldn't be so worried. He had a responsibility now and would have to live up to that. He finally understood a little about the nature of responsibility perhaps sobering up completely for once in his life.
