Jerrith accepted his egg with a dip of his head and a murmur of thanks, and immediately started working to escape the press of the crowd, all while keeping the egg carefully cradled against himself.
Shards, this crowd was making him uncomfortable. But he'd done it. He'd toughed it out, he'd stayed, and now he had another egg to show for it! In spite of his headache, he smiled.
He still had the pot he'd used for Magpie's egg, back in his room; he'd have to get sand for it, and set it by the hearth, but it would do nicely for this one, too.
He leaned against the wall outside the hall for a few moments, catching his breath; then he started forward, resolute. Picking up the intensity of his thoughts, Magpie appeared over his shoulder and fluttered onto it, peering down at Jerrith's acquisition with a curious chirp.
Smiling, Jerrith freed one hand to scratch under the black's chin. "You shouldn't be alone too much longer, little fellow," he murmured. "So long as we take good care of this treasure, we should have another friend soon enough." And hopefully the two would get along, instead of just getting into more trouble than either would alone... well, he'd deal with that when the time came.
Still... even if he never Impressed a dragon, he'd have not one, but two fire-lizards to show for his time at the Weyr. Two lifelong friends.
With that thought, bearing the time until the next Hatching might be a little easier. But right now, he had more important things to think about than the wait. It was time and then some to get this egg settled.
