A number of candidates were littered throughout the Weyrbowl either sitting or working. Despite the fact that there were so many candidates around it seemed that there were only a few working, sweeping dirt out of some of the major corridors leading into it or else sorting through the equipment from other areas of the Weyr in the open space. Other than that a dragon or two and a number of Weyrlings made their way through the space on the way to their respective tasks. A number of them also came out of their personal Weyrs to merely laze about in the cool autumn breeze. Kire was only one of the many candidates around who was in the Weyrbowl but, it seemed, she was the only one working... And the only one who would be staying out once the sun had set. She did, after all, need to become accustomed to living nocturnally... As it happened, the fact that she was the only one close to a majority of the dragons singled her out at one who had just started her chores. Many of the others were beginning to be worn down, tired from their day's work.
She was also one of the few Wher candidates. She recognised only a few other candidates as those standing for the 'illustrious' dragons. Personally, she didn't see the appeal. With a Wher, one could have a lot more freedom. This much she had gathered from the few weyrlings she knew. Most of them barely had time to feed themselves let alone talk to them anymore. She was certain that it would be similar when she impressed but at least she'd have the day to herself right? She looked about as a few more dragons touched down and wondered whether she would have to do anything. As time passed, the Weyr Bowl cleared out of many candidates leaving herself and only a few others to cater for any needs the riders may have.
Kire brushed her face plastering her forehead with dirt. She didn't have time to spare really yet she still couldn't help but stare at the landing dragons. Even though she loved the Whers she was always a little disappointed that she would only be able to fly on the back of a dragon, not a Wher. She stood still for a while, just watching the dragons as they moved about the Weyr.

F'rekiMine.
F'reki shifted his weight against the flight harness, back aching but his attention on his dragon, wanting nothing more than to lay down for a few hours after the singularly long, tiring patrol he'd just completed. Girieth had that tone in his voice that made it clear this very appealing plan was going to suffer an unfortunate delay, What's troubling you, my love?
Girieth rumbled affectionately at the rare term of endearment from his rider, MineOwn, I am hungry. F'reki laughed and shared his mental feeling of “Yes? And?” with the big blue, who snorted at him in reply, starting to circle as the Weyr came into view, I was seeing if you held any objections, Mine.
The day I object to you eating because you're hungry is the day you need to dump me between, my love. Let me unharness you in the Bowl and you can catch yourself a herdbeast before we settle for the evening. Girieth flooded their bond with a feeling of deep love and utter delight, and F'reki was, as usual when his Blue gave him one of these little reminders, unable to fight down a grin at knowing something in this world loved him that much. And it was always the little things that made his Giri the happiest.
Girieth bellowed a greeting to the watchdragon, the Green on duty warbling back as Girieth came around to land near the lake. Easy now, Giri, F'reki reminded his dragon as the Blue backwinged in preparation of touching down. His worries were unfounded; Girieth landed quite easily, much easier than either of then had expected. F'reki craned his head around, looking at his dragon's rear legs, No pain?
None, Mine. None this time. Girieth looked over his shoulder, examining his legs as well as F'reki unharnessed himself and slid down onto the forearm that Girieth raised for him almost as an afterthought.
Good. Be careful feeding; it's be terrible for us to ruin a good day by landing wrong on a sharding wherry! He glanced around, wanting a little help with Giri's harness, considering how stiff his back and legs were after a day in the air. He quickly spotted a girl with pale hair watching the dragons coming and going overhead, and called out to her, “Girl! Yes, you! Come help me with this harness, if you would?”

Kire watched as a blue landed in the Weyr Bowl the rider looking more than a little tired. She practically just stood there gawping at the two of them until she realised that the rider, an older gentleman, had called her over. She just about jumped out of her skin as she sprung to action. She bustled forwards and tripped over her own feet but managed to right herself after a moment and make it over to the rider and the gargantuan blue. She'd never really been too close to a dragon before. Sure, she'd walked past them before but, from the sounds of it, she was being asked to actually help this rider. She felt somewhat honoured that she was being asked to help and yet also felt some disappointment that the dragon was not a Wher.
"Oh yes, of course I can help. I love to help people. I guess that's why I was set to do my chores in the Weyr Bowl. I wonder whether that's why there are so many of us here... It would make sense wouldn't it?" She trailed off and cleared her throat, "Umm, just tell me what I need to do." She wasn't entirely sure what she'd have to do with the harness having not really dealt with too many Dragons before but she was always willing to try. Besides, she wasn't about to say no to someone who was clearly in need of her help. Not only that but she wasn't sure she should simply ignore a rider.
"I haven't really done this before so I'm sorry if I do something wrong." She was looking up at him with something a little close to awe. It was not that she had ever wanted to impress a Dragon it was more that she was simply enthralled by the thought of someone trusting her that much without even knowing here. And, perhaps in the back of her mind, she was wondering what kinds of things he and his dragon had seen throughout their time. He looked older and far more experienced than some of the other Riders that she had spoken to.

F'reki laughed, amused, “It's not that hard, what I need you for,” he crouched on Giri's upraised arm, wincing a bit as his legs and knees protested. “I'm F'reki, and this big lump here is Girieth. Giri, stop looking at your rear end and say hello to the girl,” the rider said, giving the blue an affectionate thump.
Girieth obediently twisted his head back around, dropping so one of his eyes was on level with the girl's head. He rumbled in interest as he examined her, Hello. You will help my F'reki with my harness? He raised his head a little, casting a look at his rider, before giving the girl a look that, even on the face of a dragon, could only be described as mischievous. In a mock whisper, he continued, He's getting old and stiff, you see, and cannot do the things he did when he was younger... F'reki gasped, mock indignant at the teasing tone Girieth took.
“You traitor! Don't listen to this overgrown flitt, lass, he's faint with hunger and doesn't know what he's about.” Girieth turned his face away, drooping from being “faint with hunger”, and generally hamming it up as best he could, before he couldn't resist any longer and let out a serious of low coughing sounds that sounded like he was choking.
“Don't worry about that noise he's making now; when he was a hatchling he decided that he liked one of the other weyrling's laugh, and that terrifying sound it the best he could do to mimic it,” F'reki waved the girl closer and reached down a hand, “Here, come on up. I need you to climb the harness to unhook a pair of buckles on the bottom side; I was a deadglow when I put this harness together, and I'm too lazy to fix it. Normally I'd just have him lay down to take it off, but once he's down after a long flight, he usually is down for a while.”

Kire heaved a sigh of relief when he assured her that it was not all that tough to take a harness off a dragon. But given that she was not precisely all that tall and there was a rather large dragon in front of her it was still a little daunting. Still, his jovial attitude served to console her a little and make her feel better about taking a harness off a giant blue dragon. She nodded a little as he introduced himself and the Blue to her. "I'm Kire," She replied but broke off after a moment when she heard a voice in her head.
The Blue was speaking to her. It was such an honour to be spoken to by a dragon. She had not really ever been spoken to directly by a dragon before. She heard the announcements around the Weyr from the Queens but that was generally it. She smiled a little and nodded. "I will help in whatever way I can!" She replied happily. She stopped for a moment when he mentioned that the rider was getting old and stiff. Well of course she would help then. She was certainly not about to leave him to work on it all by himself.
The rider, F'reki, piped up at that moment and told her that the dragon was faint with hunger. Kire looked back at the Blue with alarm. What would happen if he fainted. He drooped his head a little and Kire's eyes widened with worry. "Oh no! If he's hungry I can bring some food here directly I'm sure..." She trailed off when she heard the dragon making strange coughing noises. Was he dying!? How horrible, she had to get a Healer in here. But then... F'reki didn't seem to horrified.
She relaxed instantaneously when F'reki informed her that the dragon was merely trying to laugh. She laughed nervously and nodded a little in understanding. She turned her attention back to the male and began climbing up the dragon with some caution worried about standing on the dragon, concerned that she would harm him. Especially if he was as hungry as F'reki seemed to think. "Of course, I can do whatever you need me to." She studied the harness beginning to feel a little more confident on the dragon's back. It would be rather simple once she got the hang of it after all. Right?

F'reki smiled encouragingly at Kire, “No, no, he's fooling. He's hungry, but he can wait 'til we get his gear off; no need to have you run that far. Now, Giri, left your neck that the lass can get to the buckles.” Girieth obligingly tilted his head back, enough so that he could look at them upside down. F'reki chuckled at him, You'll get a crick something fierce like that, Girieth.
Maybe, but I wish to see. F'reki shrugged at his dragon, turning the motion into a shoulder roll that loosened up the tightening muscles. “Well, here's what you'll do,” the older dragonrider told his impromptu assistant as he tugged on one of the main leading straps of the harness, “Hook your hands in this and use it to climb down to his chest. The buckle you need to unhook is right at the base of his neck,” F'reki tapped his own throat to demonstrate. “He'll get around to hold you in place once you're there, but he can't shift quite enough to carry someone there.”
I use my tail, not my claws, if it makes you feel better. The blue added helpfully.
“Ha! Giri, I remember the last time you used your tail to hold something...” He started in, his voice picking up a storyteller's cadence as he spoke, “with the white-furred waste-beast, you remember?” He nudged his blue meaningfully at the feelings of confusion he received, and Giri quickly caught up.
Yes, yes! The...white-furred waste-beast. It was delicious. F'reki barely kept a straight face at this addition to the budding story.

Kire nodded a little when she was informed that the dragon wasn't actually that hungry. But he had seemed so tired for a moment there. She knew exactly what it felt like to be hungry all the time. Well, actually she didn't really because she'd never had a moment where she'd been all that hungry having lived her whole life in the comfort of a Weyr. Still, she wondered whether Giri was only telling His that he was fine so that she didn't have to run off to find food for him. She almost laughed when the dragon turned his head upside down so that she would be able to climb down and unhook the harness.
Kire kept nodding for a while as F'reki explained what she would need to be doing. She paid close attention to his every word and then after a moment, still nodding, she hooked her hand into the harness and began climbing through the harness. It was only then that the dragon's words actually settled in. She didn't mind too much about claws or tails... She preferred the tail option when she actually thought about it. She seemed to trust Whers more than Dragons even though the Dragons were easier to control and usually only got angry if one disrespected them.
She caught onto what they were talking about only a moment too late. A white-furred waste-beast? What in the world was that? It sounded fascinating. "Oh, I've never heard of a white-furred waste-beast. It sounds cute though... What happened?" She asked almost entranced by the tones of the rider.
Say one thing for Kire say that she was incredibly gullible and ready to believe just about anything especially when spoken by someone who had the years of experience to tell her such a tale. She was simply fascinated by just about any story someone had to tell her and would probably never even know whether or not they were talking about something truthful or not...

Girieth whipped his tail under his body, coiling it in a practiced move so that just enough of it was directly under Kire's feet to give her balance as worked on the buckles. It wasn't much space to stand, and the end of his tail was not the strongest, but it was more than enough to proved just that extra measure of support.
F'reki leaned against his dragon, angled jut enough so that he could keep an eye on the girl, “Keep one hand hooked through the harness, now, even when you get the buckle loose. I'll side you to the ground, so be sure to keep your grip. Can't have you falling!”
Warning offered, he continued on with the story, 'Oh no, the white-furred waste beast was not something anyone could call...cute. Shaped like a man, though thrice the size of one, covered in shaggy white fur and bearing razor sharp teeth, with red eyes burning with madness, it was a foul creature!”
We could smell it between, it was so terrible. Girieth helpfully added, having taken the 'foul' a bit more literally than F'reki had intended. He could work with that, though.
“Yes, it was the stench that caught our attention at first; what could possibly smell so terrible in the frozen icy waste of the far south? We soon regretted seeking it out; by the time we were upon it, he were both so blinded by the stink that when it rose up from where it had been lying in wait against the snow, it caught us by surprise!” His voice rose dramatically on the final words, awaiting a response from his audience like any performer.
You are terrible, Mine. Giri said to him privately.
Oh, my love, if I'm so terrible, why are you helping? F'reki shot back.

She payed close attention the exactly what the large dragon was doing in order to focus on not falling from the height. F'reki's warning was well received. Of course, she knew that she didn't want to fall but his reassurance that he would be watching certainly raised her confidence quite dramatically. Not to mention the fact that the dragon was ensuring she would not fall. Kire sincerely hoped she would not fall, not with a hatching this close. She placed her feet lightly on the tail offered and felt it droop a little under her weight but it was certainly rather welcome support. She gripped the harness tightly with one hand, locking it in place almost so that she would not fall if the tail failed her. She began to work at the harness as she registered what was being said to her.
The white-furred waste beast had sounded so adorable only a moment before and now it sounded absolutely horrifying from what was being described to her. Red eyes? It sounded positively frightening. She hoped she would never meet one although, from the sounds of it she would be able to smell it before she saw it. "Goodness!" She exclaimed looking at the bluerider as best she could, eyes wide, "How frightful. How did you ever manage to survive it then? I hope I never meet one..."
She had managed to work out the buckle a little and loosened it. She had not yet completely released the buckle. She was more concentrating on not falling and so had not worked up the courage to let go of the harness and work her hand free so as to utilise both of her hands to undo the harness. She worked her hand through the harness straps so that her arm was hooked through. She then had both hands free so as to finally get the buckle free. She loosened the harness, undoing it and then held on tight once again a little petrified she would fall. Thank goodness she was a Wher candidate...

Seeing the harness start to slip, showing that Kire had successfully undone the required buckles, F'reki caught at it quickly, feeding it slowly out while Girieth steadied the wher candidate, and sank lower himself to lessen the distance as she was slowly lowered to the ground.
F'reki kept up the story going as he did so; no better was to distract someone from the fact they were dangling from a dragon's neck! “The beasty burst out of the snow, and swatted at Giri like he was a bug; Giri was fine, of course,” he bumped his Blue's neck affectionately with his hip, “But I was jarred right out of my fighting straps. We were lucky we we so close to the ground, else I would have gotten more than my breath knocked out of me when I hit the snow! The beast was looming over me; murderous intent in it's eyes, and I could do naught by lie there, Giri calling for me to answer him, and banking around to come back for me.”
I was very worried. Girieth commented, settling as Kire got both feet on the ground, and lowering his foreleg so that his rider could slide down and collect the harness.
F'reki patted him, Off with you now, my love, and the Blue eagerly rose up, throwing himself into the air in a near vertical takeoff. Showing off isn't going to help those legs not hurt, Giri... The Blue didn't dignify that with a response; he could show off if he wanted to.

Kire kept listening to what was being said, working the harness almost with an automatic movement of her hands. She was wide eyed and staring as the story began to unfold in even greater detail. It sounded so fantastic that it must have been true! No one could have thought that up just like that. It must have been a truly fearsome beast and a terrifying moment! As the harness started slipping she too felt herself falling a little. She grabbed at the harness but Girieth was there to steady her. She breathed deeply and got herself into a more comfortable position as the harness was slipped away. She held on tight, getting her balance until she felt comfortable with climbing down from the Dragon.
"Thanks." She told the Blue pleased that he had not let her fall. She'd had no doubts but... Sometimes the Dragons were scarier than the Whers in that they were taller, heavier and had to be ridden. Whers were usually far too small and she loved that they were able to walk side by side. She touched the ground and stumbled a little as she got used to being on it once more. She brushed herself off a little and looked up at Girieth as he took off.
She stepped back and watched him with awe as he took off almost vertically into the air with an exclamation. Despite all she thought about Whers and Dragons she still thought Dragons amazing creatures when they flew, even if she could have never contemplated flying with one herself. She turned back to F'reki with a huge smile on her face but then tried to calm herself a little. "Wow, nothing that exciting has ever really happened to me. Well, except that I was a Dolphineer and once we thought we'd found some ruins. Old Weyrs covered with the ocean water. Then we found out that it was just a huge pile of rocks. We all got so excited... But there was nothing else to be done." She spoke quickly with a number of hand movements, "But this beast sounds so... Terrifying too!"

“Ruins! That would have made a good story to tell!” F'reki thought that it might still make a good story, and a little part of his mind went to work, plotting and discarding possible events by turn. Outwardly, he didn't show any sign of his internal story-building, seeming totally focused on his current tale.
“Oh, it was terrifying! For an instant, I was afraid I was done for, and Girieth with me! The beasty swatted it's massive paws down at me, and I managed to roll to the side,” he gave a little spin as if to demonstrate, hiding a wince as his back protested the quick movement after so long on dragonback, “and the paws missed me, just by a hair's width. It spent a moment looking confused, for it had knocked cloud of snow up that hid me as long as I was still. And when the snow settled, I was well and covered, so I kept as still as possible.”
F'reki hid a tired yawn as he went on, “But it started flailing about in the snow, because it knew I was still there. It had landed one paw on me at last and gripped, yanking me into the air! I gasped and struggled valiantly, but it raised me towards it's mouth, and by this point I was well blinded by the stink, so what happened next caught me unaware.”

Kire watched, mouth half open in awe at the tale F'reki was telling. She wasn't sure what to think. She was terrified and shocked that he could have possibly survived the ordeal. She kept listening, leaning forward a little in her eagerness to know the entire story. She stumbled when she had stood so far on the tips of her toes she had almost fallen over. But by now he had stopped again. Kire wanted to know what happened next! Especially if it was so surprising!! How did he survive then if the beast had held him and almost ripped his head off!? She didn't understand how he could possibly be standing before her!
When he did not continue immediately she nodded expectantly. "Did he bite your head?" She asked, so caught up in the moment that the stupidity of the question did not quite reach home with her. However, she was also thinking of things that had happened in her life and whether any of them could measure up to the fantastic tale she was being told. There had been this one time... At Dolphinhall where she'd had a misunderstanding with one of the dolphins, Neidon... But that had been resolved as soon as it had started. They had worked together well after that.
Maybe if he asked she could tell him some of the stories she'd heard from other people. Or perhaps there was one thing that might have been interesting to him. Everything she thought to tell him seemed weak against the white-furred waste-beast, she wasn't sure anything could be as exciting, dangerous or frightening as that experience. Part of her wanted something like that to happen but then... She also wanted nothing like that to happen to her ever.

F'reki shook his head, using it to hide the grin that threatened to split his face at the success of his story, capturing the imagination of the girl so well. "No, no, it didn't bite me, because just at that moment, Girieth managed to come up behind it and slammed it over my head!" He ducked dramatically, miming something sailing over his head with his hand, "Knocked it right down and buried it in a snow drift. Giri was coming back to get me so we could get out of there when it popped back out of the snow, roaring and spitting like an angry wild feline, only, let me tell you, a lot more frightening!'
He put a stern expression on, “I thought we were done for, but Girieth, loyal as he is, turned right around and ROARED right back in the waste beast's face! He drove it back, away from me, ROARING,” he pitched his voice into a deeper, louder every time he said the word, like he would telling a tale to younglings, “Until it finally turned tail and started to flee. But Giri wouldn't forgive it for attacking me, oh no. He leaped into the air and took it down like a flitter does a trundlebug!”

Kire’s mouth was wide open. How did the rider still have a head? How in the world had he survived? It was simply amazing! If ever she needed help with something she knew whom she’d call. F’reki seemed to know everything about everything. She listened, rapt, as he continued telling his story, delving into the details of Girieth fighting for his Rider’s life, attacking the Waste-Beast. She supposed that the dragon would have been larger than the Beast but that didn’t make the story any less terrifying. Any misstep and the Heroes of the tale would be Waste-Beast dinner. With F’reki almost roaring she was drawn further into the story. She could almost see what was happening for herself the picture was so vivid. But surely there was no way the Heroes could escape!
But the mighty Blue Girieth was there to save the day, descending upon the Beast as easily as he would a Herdbeast! The Hero Girieth had saved the day and had managed to even earn himself something of a snack! She felt a little sorry for the creature... He hadn't wanted to attack surely. Then again, there was no denying the facts. The beast had tried to attack and the Heroes fought valiantly. "Wow. That's amazing! Girieth sure is a brave Dragon. You two must make such a great pair!"
Of course they did! They were rider and dragon! There was no denying their bond. "Do you think I'll face one myself? That would be terrifying. But with a Wher we sure would be unstoppable." Her eyes were almost glittering with the thought of fighting to protect the Weyr at night with a Wher by her side.

F'reki puffed up a little at the praise to his dragon, always happy to accept admiration for the Blue even if the praise was for something that didn't technically ever happen. Details! “My Girieth is quite the hero, and I love him dearly. Every day I hope I prove that he did the right thing when he choose me all those turns ago...”
He didn't say anything for a fem moments, lost in the memories of a tiny Blue hatchling stalking across distant, both in physical distance and time, Sands towards him, then only a nervous stripling himself.
Kire's worries about encountering an imaginary creature jarred him out of his memories, though, “No, I highly doubt you'll ever encounter a white-furred waste beast, my girl. You're a wher Candidate, yes? You'll probably never stray far enough south or north to see one – in fact, I'd be very surprised if anyone encountered another! Not many folks see any reason to be in the frozen wastes, and the beasts are likely rare,” Or don't exist at all... he said to Girieth, now finishing off a wherry in contentment, but made sure he didn't add aloud.
I'm tired Mineown; I go to our weyr. Girieth replied, not bothering to dignify His's comment with an answer. He lifted off from the feeding grounds and circled overhead, Do I come get you, or will you walk?
I will walk, my love. I will see you shortly. F'reki watched Girieth alight on the lip of their weyr, and turned back to the girl, “Girieth is retiring for the evening, and I shall as well. Do you still have duties, or can you make sure this tired old man makes it to his dinner?”

Kire noticed the smile cross over the rider's face when she praised Girieth. She wondered whether she would feel the same when she impressed her Wher. She hoped so. Something told her that she would. It was probably just that almost everyone she had ever met who had impressed to something felt the elation and love for the bonded creature. She couldn't wait. At that note, she knew that she'd have to get back to her chores. She shouldn't have been out so early but she had volunteered for fear of being told that she wasn't pulling her weight. Plus, she thought it important to get to know at least some of the Riders and dragon candidates.
"Oh, I should get back to work. Finish up here really. It was wonderful meeting you! Maybe when I impress we can go looking for some more of these creatures... Um... Possibly some of the nicer ones. And maybe not up close..." She smiled in spite of the fear she held for the creature, "I would come with you... But I really should finish this up. I'm sorry." She smiled anxiously, actually worried that he might not manage to get to his dinner and then where would she be!? She'd be in trouble that's what. "Will you be alright...?" She asked with some concern.

"No, no, lass, if you have chores, this old man understands. I was a Candidate once, too, and Faranath knows that they work you poor things to the bone. I can make it to the dining hall just fine." F'reki waved her worried words away, pleased regardless by her concern. "I'll leave you to it, then. Good evening to you, my girl, and good luck when you Stand. And feel free to bring your wher around to meet me and my Girieth when you Impress…if I've made enough of an impression on you that you remember our names, at least!" He turned, walking towards the brightly lit lower caverns, lifting a hand in farewell as he walked away with a jaunty stride that he really did not feel up to pulling off - the girl was like to worry if he trudged like he wanted to, and the last thing he really needed was a worried and fussing Candidate. Better to let the girl go back to her chores with a light heart! She was sweet, MineOwn, Girieth's drowsy voice sounded in his head, I can't believe she believed your story, but she was sweet, and brave to help you. Do you think she will do well? I do, my love. I'm sure she'll Impress well.

Kire was so pleased to know that there was nothing to worry about with the rider. He seemed to be alright and she really did need to get back to her chores... She was going to be a Handler after all so she needed to show them how well she could work. She nodded to the rider and bade him farewell watching him as he left the Weyrbowl, still a little worried about him. But, she was still amazed at his story. No, at his history. It was simply beyond reckoning that he would be able to actually accomplish something so amazing. He was clearly a truly amazing person to have fought the beast.
She went back to her chores knowing that she would be awake for much longer with evening coming on. She'd probably have dinner eventually but she needed to get her chores in the Weyrbowl done first. She couldn't help but marvel at the story she had been told and nor could she stop her mind wandering, thinking about all the other adventures the rider must have had in the past. She thought of just about everything he could have possibly faced and made them ten times fiercer.
What an amazing person!
{Just to kind of finish it off ^^}
