The Gold hatching had certainly been an interesting time for the woman and she was certainly glad she’d had the chance to stand. Perhaps the thing that made her most pleased was the fact that someone so wholly suited to the role of Goldhandler had been chosen. Yalenia had no regrets and had been honoured with the chance to stand but when she truly thought about it she was pleased it had been Kalenna and not her to be chosen. She needed to be doing the physical work… Writing out records and sorting through past things was not for her. She didn’t truly mind what happened now only that she would happily follow the Alphahandler.
She had not seen Kalenna since the hatching and had not been able to seek her out. Unfortunately, with their respective duties it was almost impossible to actually find time to ‘sit and chat’ as it were. However, she had seen the other woman occasionally in the Lower Caverns and had the chance to give a passing greeting. Here she now was, sitting in the Dining Hall having ‘breakfast’ before she had to set out for her chores. She had some time before her first one started but she’d awoken rather early, keeping with her sleeping schedule.
She could see a couple of the Wherhandlers about but not too many of them. The Wherlings all had other things to worry about and a lot of the Handlers seemed to enjoy sleeping in whenever they could. Understandable, she supposed she’d want the same if she was expected to patrol the entire Weyr each night. She yawned in spite of herself and went back to picking at her food.
It would be a while until the next hatching with one just passed and the other Gold only a season old. Still, she had chosen to remain assuming that some of her skills as a Smith could be useful in teaching lessons to the candidates. Most of them would need to know a little about smithing in order to take on chores… She had attended the Dragon hatching, arriving late but still early enough to see the Twin Tans hatch. She wondered whether such an event could ever happen for the Whers. It sure would be interesting. She wondered whether some of the Wher spectators were attempting to return to their sleeping patterns. Looking about she somehow assumed ‘yes’.
