A Black Wher was curled up in the middle of a hallway in the lower caverns. He slept rather soundly and pleasantly seemingly without a worry in the world. Kisk had smelled something that morning and gone to investigate. But the brightness had hurt his eyes so he'd run from it and fallen asleep somewhere. Now, he was waking a little. His eyes didn't hurt at all which must have meant it was night time! He opened his eyes and immediately felt the concern of His. Oh no! Where was he!? Where was His!? This wasn't right! This wasn't home! It didn't smell like home. Not at all at all... It didn't even look clean like home! Where are you Kisk!? Oh no... Ausk is going to eat me!
He could feel His' worry... This was not good. Where in the world was he? Usually His figured all this stuff out for him. He knew where he was usually but His helped him when he got lost. He keened a little, feeling the mounting fear from HisBestKireHis. OH NO! Someone has kidnapped you haven't they!? Kisk keened again. Not know! Not know! Kisk know... Smell... Walk. Not know! [/i] He dropped to the ground and lay on his belly for a moment as though this would fix things. But he was feeling tired again. He started to close his eyes when he heard a noise and smelled something very strange. His ears pricked up a little and he forced himself to try to know what it was. He followed the sound not realising that he was moving further away from His. He was searching for His but this smell was not His. It was someone like His. BestKire would be so sad! He had to find her! Make sure everything was alright! Suddenly, SmallPinkThing popped in front of him. He looked at Her for a moment and cocked his head at the images. Nope, not know. Not know at all. SmallPinkThing made one final noise at him and then disappeared again. Maybe she was angry. But Kisk heard a noise again! Find it he would! He scurried forwards, determined on figuring out what it was![/blockquote][/size]

It seemed that Kalesk was doomed to spend her mornings - at least, it was morning on her sleep cycle - rescuing silly blacks. Kalenna had gone to fetch herself klah and a few meatrolls, and then they would make the daily trip to the feeding pens; that was as far as Kalesk's plans stretched, as she prepared to live in the moment. No doubt Hers had further goals for the night. Perhaps she'd been informed of a lesson; certainly there would be oiling, and likely chores of some sort. But to the gold, Hunger was the important thing. She would satisfy the hunger, and from then on, it did not matter.
Stretching, she padded out of their room and into the lower caverns; she could feel Kalenna, and planned to meet her at the entrance to the tunnels to save time. The sooner she got out of the pressing caverns, the better. Though Kalenna passed close to Kisk, she took a different turning and didn't actually meet the wher; however, Kalesk came across him then, as he apparently heard the scratch of her claws on the stone floor.
The gold stopped. She stared. The black, she thought, had an empty head. He was without his handler, yet not moving with the purpose Kalesk felt. Personally, she had not yet grown to the point where she considered all the Weyr's whers hers to protect; yet she was his queen, and he was alone.
Kalesk gave a soft, wher sigh and turned. The silly black could follow her to the feeding pens, and Kalenna would know how to find his handler.

Kisk caught up with the sound and immediately skidded to a halt. He bugled softly at the Him before him. Was it BronzeOne!? He tilted his head to one side and stared at the strange Wher. It was not one of his brothers nor was it the BronzeOne whom had hatched when he had. No! It was another Wher. It was not GoldMummy but it was a Gold. Did she take him here? Maybe she had. Maybe she wanted to show him something! He warbled to her, waggling his whole body with extreme excitement. As she made a move to walk away Kisk stopped waggling and keened unhappily. She was leaving him!? He trotted after her. Kisk no know. DifferentGoldQuietOne know? Kisk follow!!
He wasn’t so sure whether he should but it seemed like the best option. He waggled his body once more and bounded after the Gold. As far as he was concerned she was the closest thing he had to a leader at the moment. No Wait! Don’t go off with strange Whers Kisk!!
But Kisk was already gone when she arrived at the place Vesta had led her to. She looked about for a sign of her beautiful black Wher but he was nowhere to be seen. He had also wandered off with some unknown Wher! The only Gold she knew was Risk and she was known to Kisk as GoldMummy. Wait! It must have been a wild Wher! No. Something about that sounded wrong even to her. She stood there a moment longer, thinking it all through.
It must have been the new Gold. But she was still a strange Wher whom Kisk didn’t know. What if he had been kidnapped. Oh she was going to be in so much trouble. If Audren or Ausk found out they’d probably be booted from Wherlinghood or worse! They might try to take Kisk away from her! He would be taken all over again. She was responsible! She needed to find him before Ausk ate her.
Completely in tears now, Kire tore through the Lower Caverns, searching for Kisk. Any hints the Wher gave her were hardly useful as he merely informed her that he was following DifferentGoldQuietOne to wherever she was going. Well, at least one thing was certain. Their bond seemed to be rather strong… She could still hear Kisk even though she had not a clue where he was.

Kalesk certainly would not allow Ausk to eat another wher, and that was if Audren couldn't control her red, which she most certainly could. Kalesk remembered the red and her handler better than most, and while she didn't care particularly for Ausk, she respected Audren - and she knew Kalenna did, too.
DifferentGoldQuietOne. That was a mouthful, and Kalesk snorted to herself. She did not like it. Things were far more simple than that. Kalesk, she told Kisk simply. It was a waste of time and effort to call her by that moniker, and Kalesk preferred not to waste.
It did not take them long to arrive at the entrance to the tunnels where Kalenna waited, mug in one hand, meatroll in the other. She raised an eyebrow at Kalesk's follower and crouched down, not sure which of the blacks this was. Small; a wherling's bonded, for sure. "Where's your handler?" she asked him kindly.
Kalesk tossed her head at that. The handler could find them at the feeding pens. It was breakfasttime, and Kalesk had been very helpful to the mysterious wher, but now she was fast losing interest. Her duty was done; it was time to chase, to hunt, to feed. Go,[/i] she told them both, loping off across the bowl.
Kalenna nodded her head to the black. "We're going to eat," she said. "You may tell your handler to meet us there." If he was still in contact with his handler. Perhaps she needed to go back to the barracks and try to find them...but Kalesk would not wait.

Kisk frowned a wher frown at the name. Kalesk? That was silly! No he much preferred his name for the Gold. Then again, she was a boss. Maybe one day she would be a boss anyway. He wrinkled his nose and gurgled away as he followed BossKalesk as she took him to meet Hers. It would be interesting to meet Hers! He stuck his nose to the ground again and, tail in the air waggling happily, he bounded along behind BossKalesk. She would help him out! But why was she helping him again? He couldn’t remember. Oh wait! Where was His? Oh no!
They reached the bowl and Kisk bugled a greeting to BossKalesk’s handler. He sat down and looked up at her, cocking his head to the side as she spoke to him. Oh no! BestKireKiskLove! She was missing! He keened unhappily and drooped his head. Not know. Kisk smell, walk, look, lost, not know. See BossKalesk, follow! Not lost! Kisk seemed a little happier now and looked about the bowl curiously. He was hungry! Very hungry. He had been sleeping in the corridor for sometime now but he was also tired. Kisk know! We in Bowl! He spoke to both Kire and BossKalesk’s.
Kire had been following the trail left behind by her wher and listening to his half of the conversation. So he had found the young gold and she had taken him out to see her handler. Oh she was going to be in so much trouble. She sprinted her way to search for them out in the bowl. Vesta followed behind, darting off every now and then to fix any mess she saw.
Kire burst out into the bowl and looked around her. She wanted nothing more than to just call Kisk over to her and not deal with the goldhandler. She was probably going to get into trouble! Kisk had been kidnapped! It wasn’t her fault! She knew that wasn’t true but she did not want him taken from her. She loved him way too much!

It was highly unusual for anyone but Kalesk to bespeak Kalenna, and it really drove home just how intelligent her bonded was for a wher. And how quiet. Had Kalesk even spoken that many words in her lifetime? "It's good you followed her," Kalenna said. "You are no longer lost; you are with us." Kalesk, his handler is coming. Wait one moment?[/i]
Kalesk paused and turned, glowering back at them both and refusing to step even an inch closer. This little black was so bright, as she called those she thought were dim in human-parlance. The feeding pens were a good place to meet; they could hunt as a pair, perhaps. She could teach him, so long as he did not get too close. A hunter needed space to stalk. Yet she did know the desire to be close to one's handler, so she waited, though she would not wait long.
Kalenna spotted the girl and nodded to her, gesturing that she ought to come over to them. Ah, a happy reunion about to take place. She had to admit to a burning curiosity about how on Pern the young handler had managed to lose her wher, but hopefully she could convince the two to come along to the feeding pens for that particular conversation. Kire had little to worry about; Kalenna would not turn them over to Audren unless it turned out the girl had been neglectful.

Kire looked over at the goldhandler with an apprehensive expression. What if she got into trouble? Regardless, she wanted Kisk!! She was just about crying as she sprinted out to meet Kisk who waggled his whole body with happiness at the sight of her. She dropped to her knees and threw her arms around the tiny black kissing his head all over. Kisk seemed to giggle and waggled his body again. How could you wander off like that!? I was so worried about you! Someone kidnapped you didn’t they? They probably tricked you into following them or something. Probably renegade riders or something. She knew it wasn’t likely but she was grasping at straws there. That feel funny. Kisk kiss?
She felt a small pain of Kisk lightly chewing on her shoulder. It wasn’t at all that he thought biting her was kissing her but rather he loved her so much he felt the need to show it in a better way. Eating her seemed to be the best way to show that! He loved herdbeasts and he ate them! He stopped after a moment as Kire got to her feet, rubbing her shoulder. Vesta immediately hovered in front of Kisk’s eyes berating him for wandering off. She then landed on his back and just about started dusting it off, searching for signs of mess, which had no doubt culminated over time they had been apart.
Kire wanted to pick the little black up and hug him for the rest of their lives but she guessed that wasn’t really possible. She instead bowed slightly to the goldhandler, an apprehensive expression on her face. “Thank you for finding him. Well, um, please thank Kalesk for me too...”
She was wringing her hands around each other as Kisk took to wandering off once more, sniffing the ground, tail high in the air. This time, Kire did not take her eyes off the Wher as she watched the shadow move around the two of them in circles, Vesta chirping indignantly every now and again. She wiped her eyes as furtively as she could manage and glanced back at the other woman. Only she could manage to lose her Wher. She was the worst Wherling ever. [/blockquote]

It was sweet, the way the girl clearly missed her wher and delighted in the reunion, and Kalenna took a small step back to give them space, though she frowned when she noted that the black was chewing his handler's shoulder. It did not appear that the wherling reprimanded him, so Kalenna put in gently, "I don't think you ought to let him get in the habit of biting." Especially not friendly folk. Were there any new wherling pairs without some strangeness in them?
Kalenna inclined her head politely. "I'm glad we were able to help, though Kalesk is the one who found him, actually." Kalesk, sitting not far away, staring. Unblinking. As time crept past she grew ever more impatient, and Kalenna always hated it when Kalesk lost her usual calm. She has thanked you.[/i] Kalesk indicated, without words, that she was aware.
Out of curiosity, Kalenna asked, "How did he become lost? I don't blame you, I simply wondered. He was far from the barracks, wasn't he?" Giving Kalesk a quelling glance, she added, "Kalesk would like to eat. Would you two care to join us?" Already she could tell that Kisk hunting with Kalesk was bound to end in tears, but it was polite to extend the offer; it was either that, harm her wher through continued conversation here - unacceptable - or walking away - not preferred. Besides, it would do Kalesk good to get used to others.

Kire felt uncomfortable with the gentle suggestion of reprimanding Kisk. He was just kissing her! No harm in that! Besides, Kisk could do no wrong because he was amazing! Still… She didn’t want to talk back to the goldhandler and merely nodded a little uncomfortably. Kisk looked between the two of them, tongue hanging from his maw in an almost puppy fashion. Um… Maybe you shouldn’t bite people Kisk. She suggested to him quietly. But Kisk love!
He looked at her with sad eyes. Kire couldn’t help it at all. She wanted to hug him again but wasn’t so sure about that. If Kalenna saw her hug Kisk she might think Kire was rewarding him for biting her. It hadn’t hurt and nor had it broken the skin… It was more of a playful bite. A love bite! She smiled again, all former worry forgotten now Kisk was safe, and nodded. At least she knew that their leaders would help them out when they needed it! She had never met Ridan or Risk except at the hatching but she guessed they must have been fairly good leaders. As far as she knew, they had been the alphas at the Weyr for sometime.
Kire became awkward again when she was asked how she lost Kisk. She was not entirely certain of the answer and took to wringing her hands around one another anxiously. “Well…” Kisk cut across her. He was smart enough to know that BestKire didn’t know what had happened. He didn’t know either! But he knew a little more than she did. He bugled a little and then spoke to the two females. Kisk smell. Kisk always smell. Kisk walk and no find. Kisk sleepy. Not know how get back. It different. Many places walk. Different. Kisk fall sleep. Wake and not remember. Now remember though! AlmostBestVest tell Kisk. Kisk lost. Then know. See BossKalesk! Kisk good now. It not Kire. We meant sleep but Kisk need find smell. Kisk amazing investigator!! He puffed his chest out proudly, having repeated the title Kire had given him and then bounded off to find the gold. He was hungry! All that sleeping had made him hungry.
Kire stared after him a moment and then turned to Kalenna. “Well… He doesn’t seem to have the best memory. But he is really smart! He can smell heaps of things.” She started with a slight hint of a defensive tone.

It was one thing for Kire not to mind the love bites, especially if he didn't draw blood; Kalenna merely worried about him truly believing this was a normal way to show affection, and potentially transferring it to other handlers or whers. It could lead to trouble, and she would hate to see the black or his wherling in trouble for something like that.
Kalenna tilted her head to the side, listening to Kisk's explanation. He certainly spoke a great deal more than Kalesk ever did, and it was strange to hear someone else's voice in her head. Yet it was easy enough to parse his story, and it didn't seem to be Kire's fault. She ought to keep a closer eye on her young wher, but if she'd been asleep...
"That is amazing," she murmured, and gave Kire a reassuring smile. "Don't worry about it; most whers have a quite limited memory, and his sense of smell is bound to come in handy when he is a guard. He has a great deal of potential." Whether Kire would be able to bring out the best in him was another matter entirely; she seemed sweet, but perhaps too sweet to control him as she needed to do, as the one who did have a memory and a deeper understanding of the way things worked.
As soon as Kalesk spotted Kisk coming, she turned and started for the feeding pens; Kalenna moved to follow, though at a distance, not bothering to run to catch up this time. Hopefully Kisk wouldn't annoy Kalesk too badly.

Kire seemed to cheer up at the words from the gold handler. The bounce to her step that had all but disappeared over the past few hours returned as she followed the older female. She watched Kisk bounding after Kalesk with some worry, though. If Kisk happened to get in her way while she was hunting then he would be taken down. “I think so too. I mean, he gets distracted sometimes but I think I can handle him.”
She had to really, there was no other options. Kisk had stuck his nose to the ground once again and was wandering off in search of some smell or another. She smiled fondly at him. She could have never asked for a better wher, he was everything she could have dreamed of and more. Even her father’s wher was nothing compared to Kisk. She was also rather honoured to be speaking with a gold handler. She’d never really met Ridan or Risk but they had seemed nice enough at the hatching and during their lessons.
Kisk hungry! BossKalesk hungry? We eat! Play? Play chase food! He bounded after her jumping up every now and again as though trying to decide whether or not to lick her. He took to hopping about in excitement but tried not to annoy the gold. He wasn’t sure how to act around her because she was so different to the other whers he had met. Most of those had been greens none of them were bosses.
He scurried ahead of her and lay on his belly, scrambling under the fence to the pens. He got stuck and keened sadly, waggling his tail and bottom in an effort to free himself. Vesta flew over and hissed as Kisk managed to kick dust and dirt all over her. BestKire… Kisk stuck. It look bigger. It not.
Kire looked at Kisk and then glanced anxiously at Kalenna before rushing over to try to free her tiny black wher. He’d half dug a hole and then stopped without finishing the hole before trying to crawl into the feeding pen.

Kalesk was well aware of what was food and what wasn't, and Kisk would not get more than sharp words from her unless he endangered her handler. She would observe him, and perhaps, if she was feeling magnanimous and sated, show him how to be better. Clearly he needed to be protected from his own enthusiasm, which set her teeth on edge; he could be a threat without even meaning to be.
Kalenna nodded to Kire's words. Distracted sometimes? More often than that, she fancied, but it was clear their bond was strong, and that was a decent start. A pair could be molded into guards under those circumstances, far more easily than could a handler who had no control. At least he was no red or prideful gold, to endanger the Weyr when he got distracted.
She bit her lip at the sight of him struggling in the hole, and moved to let Kalesk in through the gate, as was proper. Kalesk loped into the pens and circled back to eye Kisk. The hunger gnawing her belly bid her hunt, and she was not yet at the stage of development where her desire to help and protect her fellow whers was strong; that would come in time, as the lessons and her handler's strength proved to her that she could lead. Nor did the black understand the purpose of a hunt. It was not play; the joy of it came from the proof that you were the stronger, the victor.
Her eyes met Kalenna's, and Kalesk deigned to move closer and help scrape some of the dirt away from Kisk's shoulders before Kalenna allowed her to go. Then, with a flick of her stumpy tail, the gold was off and running. The soft lowing of the frightened herds provided a backdrop to the humans' continued efforts to free Kisk, Kalenna making sure she was well out of the way of a potential slash of his claws. Kalesk really would kill him if he injured her, even accidentally. "It's all right," she murmured to Kisk. "Don't struggle; we shall dig you free."

Kisk struggled until he knew that Kire was close. He calmed himself and instead bugled at Kalesk with excitement, wanting to join her sooner rather than later. Oh! But why was he stuck? He couldn’t remember but he did want to join the other wher in her hunt! It would be fun to chase things and then eat. It was always fun to hunt for food. Why stuck? He gurgled softly at Kalenna’s words and looked at her before turning back to His, waiting for the explanation.
You didn’t go through the gate, that’s why. Kire shook her head but, with the help of Kalenna, managed to dig Kisk free. As soon as he was free she directed him towards the gate, which he looked at and scurried his way over to in an excited frenzy. Kire watched him and then rejoined Kalenna with a worried expression.
“Well, um, how are you finding it in Dalibor so far?” She decided to ask to distract Kalenna from Kisk’s actions.
She loved Kisk with all her heart but she couldn’t imagine a wher that was more of a handful. She was loathe to reprimand him simply because he rarely seemed to do anything out of malice. She wasn’t even sure whether ‘malice’ was a word he understood or knew. The other part of it was that she wasn’t sure how she could tell him in a way that would prevent him getting too upset with her.
She supposed it would be necessary eventually but she hoped that time with the other whers would teach him how he should act. Most of the time he just seemed to get confused and merge two things together; like cleaning and eating… She watched as Kisk ran after Kalesk, tail in the air, sniffing the ground every now and again. It was tough to see him in the darkness but if she followed Kalesk she could usually spot Kisk’s shadowy hide following.

Once the black was freed and Kalenna had ascertained that this minor adventure hadn't left him with any injuries, Kalenna leaned against the fence, eyes tracking her gold through the pen. Her more dusky color meant she was a bit difficult to see, which was all to the good in her hunting; she blended a little with the dirt, at times. Perfect.
"I like Dalibor a great deal," Kalenna said, loath to talk about her past, as always. "I respect those in authority, which is important, and it's easy enough to learn how to get around." What else was there to say about it, really? Dalibor had given her Kalesk; even if someday she transferred - and at her age, in this position, she really doubted she ever would - it would always hold a special place in her heart, just for that. "How long have you been here?"
Kalesk, for her part, eventually turned on Kisk. Hear Kisk,[/i] she said. Quiet.[/i] Obviously the herds would hear him coming if he pranced all over the place with that kind of energy. Kalesk's own energy, she bottled up inside and wound like a spring, all ready to uncoil and lash out at her prey when the time was right. But Kisk clearly didn't have the space in his thick head for patience. She would have to teach him.

Kire had been at Dalibor for sometime now but she sometimes felt as though it was only when she had impressed Kisk that she felt it was truly her home. Perhaps the biggest thing was that she felt as though she was more part of the community now that she was amongst the other wherhandlers and able to communicate with them with more comfort than she had before. She felt as though she now had something to offer the Weyr in her training of and care for Kisk. The short seasons she had been bonded to Kisk seemed to have gone much quicker than the turns she had spent as a candidate.
“Well that’s great! I really like Audren… And Ridan” She added as an afterthought, “I mean, I know that Ridan’s not our alpha anymore but I he always seemed rather friendly. Audren’s Ausk’s handler so of course I like the handler of Kisk’s mother!”
More than all that she was just thankful she had not impressed a wher like Ausk for she hated the thought of being constantly worried that her wher would not only attack someone but also, perhaps, kill them. She knew whers were known for their aggressive nature but at least some of them were only aggressive sometimes. Reds, even red dragons, seemed to be permanently set on ‘rage’.
Kisk came to an abrupt halt as his queen turned on him and told him to be quiet. What for? Being quiet wasn’t fun at all. Gosh, some whers could be so boring when they wanted to. He shuffled forwards and stood near Kalesk, waggling his body again but trying to keep quiet. She had said that he needed to keep quiet but did she mean not speaking or staying still?
KISK AM QUIET!!! Oh! Quiet.
Waggling his excitement he looked about, searching for some sign of what they were supposed to be hunting. He usually just liked tearing through the pens and grabbing whatever he could find! Sneaking up on them was easy enough if he wanted to be bored. He ran a tight circle and then ducked low to the ground, crawling forwards on his belly as quiet as he could be. This was a little more fun now!
