ooc: just after Callistath’s hatching
Diasith?
The image of the dragon enticed him to keep walking along the Lower Caverns, following the directions of the black. We should fly T’aonMine. It has been long. He could hardly help but smile at the words from the dragon and continued to walk slowly through the corridors. Why did his feet feel heavy? How odd. Well, perhaps he was merely tired. Some time in the air would sort all of that out.
To an onlooker the journeyman healer was very much in some sort of delusional sleep as he walked through the corridors a black firelizard flitting behind him, eyes whirling with worry. It had all started with a hatching, Callistath’s hatching to be precise. Five blacks, one brown. These were the only dragons Tedaon had truly noticed on the sands. Even though he had shown every indication of watching each hatchling impress it was those six dragons he had paid attention to the most. The brown, unfortunately, had impressed to a young candidate he knew. Since then, he had not slept a wink.
Neras had been watching His as close as a firelizard could and when the man had started walking through the corridors as though asleep the black had flown straight away out of the infirmary to follow him. He wasn’t sure what was happening and anything he tried to get from His seemed garbled, as though he was asleep. If he was walking, however, how could he possibly be asleep!?
You are slow. I am sorry, I’m not as young as I used to be. That is not an excuse. I guess I’m just tired then. For certain.
Neras chirped a warning as they approached someone. It seemed that His couldn’t see the person before them. In an instant he had run into said person and come to a confused halt.
Mine.

Unaware of the turmoil that may or may not have been caused by the recent dragon hatching, Khemres made his quiet way along the corridor. He wasn't doing much of anything at the moment -- just enjoying the night, and the fact that he now had two lifelong friends. There was Zetri, perched on his hat and trilling away as if he felt the need to alert everyone in the world of their presence, who had been his faithful friend for several Turns now. And then there was Khesk, the loyal bronze who padded at his side and kept watch for anything his human might trip over, since he had long ago figured out that Khemres could not navigate on his own owing to being half-blind.
Box, the bronze warned, and His stepped automatically to one side to avoid the obstacle. They didn't talk much, but they didn't need to -- both preferred to use emotions and wordless thoughts to communicate, anyway. The human half of the pair, however, was often required by his wher to speak to other people, if only in passing. Khesk insisted that it would help him overcome his fear of other human beings. The albino was inclined to doubt it, but he did as he ws told since the wher was obviously not trying to do him in.
It was Khesk who first noticed the figure approaching down the hallway, and he slowed a bit, glancing up at His. Other human coming. Khemres greet, he suggested pointedly, and his handler glanced up. As it happened, he didn't have time to say hello or duck out of the way; the other man crashed right into him. Far shorter and lighter than his assailant, the wherling staggered back, barely catching himself against the wall on his left before he managed to straighten. His wher, somewhat alarmed, stared at him through the darkness, radiating concern, and Khemres automatically implied that he was fine before somewhat dazedly turning back to the person ahead of him. "S-sorry..."
The bronzehandler couldn't see the man's features at all, in the dark, but Zetri and Khesk both supplied him with images. The former perched upon his hat, trilling eagerly at the other firelizard, and then spread his wings and flitted over to Make Friends. Oh boy! Khemres ignored him for the moment, relying more on Khesk's image -- the taller man didn't look good at all. His features were haggard, strained -- the wherling wasn't sure what was wrong, but he looked up at him uneasily, not quite sure what to do. "U-um... are y-you okay?"

Neras chirped a warning again when His didn’t seem to notice the people and creatures before him but it was far too late for His. They ran into one another and Neras chattered with worry, eyes swirling. His hadn’t been like this in so long… Not since Big Brother had disappeared. He recognised that there was another black firelizard and chattered at him sadly, trying to communicate his concern for the healer.
Tedaon stumbled back and steadied himself. He must have tripped on his way out to the Weyrbowl or something. He had been spending a lot of time in the Lower Caverns as opposed to in his Weyr with his dragon. His eyes took in very little even though, technically speaking, he was actually awake. He knew where he was going but was still in a dream-like state.
S-sorry… Why was Diasith apologising for that? It didn’t make all that much sense at all. Perhaps it was merely because his black was not yet waiting for him resulting in how he had stumbled. It didn’t make sense even to him but it was the most logical explanation he could figure.
“That’s quite all right, nothing to worry about.” U-um... are y-you okay? “Of course Diasith, I don’t know why you would ask that?”
He was confused to say the least. Much of what he wanted to say he felt he needed to say it aloud for Diasith didn’t seem to be reacting to his thoughts. Perhaps he, Tedaon, was keeping some of his thoughts from Diasith accidentally. It wouldn’t have been the first time he had accidentally kept his thoughts from the black. Occasionally, when he was really tired, his brain worked a little slower than normal and he spoke the words as well as thought them. “Should we go?”
Neras chirped at the other black worriedly, was His ok? He had seemed to come off worse from the collision than Tedaon… Then again, the healer didn’t seem any different than he had been before and that was perhaps more troubling.

Zetri, taken aback by the worried chattering, stared wide-eyed at the other firelizard before trilling uncertainly. He understood that the other black was concerned for his human, but what was wrong with him? Deciding that making friends would be easier if he learned what was going on, the flitter zipped closer to the healer's pet, chittering questions and flashing images and emotions at the Friend of Zetri-to-be. What was wrong? Why was he so upset for his human?
Khemres wasn't sure what was going on and to be quite honest this entire situation was making him severely nervous. The dismissal of his apology was fine, expected even, but the name... Diasith? Who was Diasith? The wherhandler glanced uncertainly to his bronze, and Khesk moved closer so that His could rest a hand on his ridged back. There were times when Khemres had to fend for himself, but this was not one of them.
"I..." He hesitated, trying to study the man's face through the dark. This proved to be impossible, but Khesk helpfully relayed him an image of the tall healer. Thanks. Khemres focused on the picture in his mind for a moment. "I'm n-not Diasith." Wait a second. Something clicked in the back of his mind. Obviously the bronzewherling knew that he wasn't Diasith, whomever that might be... but that was a dragon's name. What would prompt someone to call another person by a dragon's name, unless...
Had the man lost his dragon? Khemres hadn't actually encountered anyone with such a problem before, and he dearly hoped this person was just confused and possibly hallucinating. Even some weird illness would probably be better than losing a bonded. "U-um... I d-don't know. Are you g-going somewhere?" Definitely weird. The albino dug his fingers uncertainly into Khesk's back. The bronze, not minding, chirped softly. He sensed no threat from the healer, but he wasn't certain of what was going on any more than His was.
Zetri's humanpet was fine, and the black assured his Friend-to-Be of that. Fluttering about, the younger firelizard crooned, and then darted to put himself on a level with the other black, looking over at him querulously. His person was okay, but he was obviously nervous and confused. Zetri didn't like that. He creeled uncertainly, looking from the tall man to the unfamiliar flit. What was going on?

This was… Strange to say the least. Why was Diasith acting so strange? What did he mean he wasn’t Diasith? What cruel trick was the black playing on him now? Of course, he loved the dragon with all his might but sometimes Diasith sure played some strange jokes on him. Shaking his head he supposed that Diasith was just being a little silly again, trying to trick him.
The dragon had spoken again and Tedaon laughed at the question. Of course they were going somewhere! They were going to go for a fly! Why, it was the black that had suggested it in the first place. The healer shook his head his grin remaining as he tried to figure out what Diasith was saying.
“Well, of course we are going somewhere, we’re going for a fly! You suggested it you silly little black. Goodness, I don’t know what’s up with you lately.”
Tedaon frowned and reached out to the black, pulling him into a hug. Perhaps there was something worrying the dragon. That was always a very real possibility. Diasith had been even more quiet than usual lately. Maybe the black did not really wish to go for a fly but rather just wished to see him out of the infirmary. He hugged the dragon closer and then froze.
This was not a dragon…
It felt nothing like a dragon…
Tedaon tracked his hands upwards slightly and then felt something else, sort of like… Clothes? Was Dia wearing clothes!? How strange…
“Are you wearing… A hat Dia?”
Neras chirped back at the black and sent him a couple of images of a black dragon disappearing and then a confused black firelizard searching for the dragon. Neras wasn’t sure where Diasith his big brother had disappeared to but he knew that he had disappeared a while ago. He must have been hiding somewhere. He chirped, happy to see another firelizard and flitted about in a circle. Well, perhaps if they just played with some of the others His would finally find some way to accept that the dragon was not going to be found any time soon.

While this whole encounter was more than a little peculiar, Khemres could deal with strangeness. He, by virtue of his very appearance, was widely considered to be strange. But this... this was not only odd, but disturbing. Yes, that was the word. The albino was not at all sure he liked being mistaken for a dragon, let alone a dragon he didn't even know. And going for a fly... how could he possibly explain that he couldn't actually fly when this man clearly believed that he was a dragon? How did that even work?
Perhaps the technicalities of that question might have appealed to the wherling more if he hadn't been struck with an overwhelming sense of pity for the poor man. There was no other explanation for this behaviour -- he had to have lost his dragon. Khemres, bonded to a wher, couldn't even imagine losing his bronze, and he had heard that the bond between dragon and rider was even deeper. Reflexively, his hand tightened on Khesk's back. "But I'm n-not Diasith!" he protested, a little more loudly than he had before.
Awkward. Awkward, awkward, awkward! As soon as he was dragged into a hug, Khemres froze up. People did not spontaneously touch him. People did not spontaneously hug him. And, while he had no problem with physical contact when he knew people really, really well (like E'ra, for example), the wherling was not used to being randomly hugged. He also was not used to people thinking he was a dragon.
Means no harm... but this very odd. Khesk looked up at his bonded, who was staring at him desperately, and crooned softly, nuzzling the hand that had slipped from his back when the tall man hugged His. Will be okay. Do not think will hurt Khemres. See what happens. Maybe help, if can. Eyes whirling reassuring shades of blue, the bronze positioned himself at his human's side, close enough that Khemres could touch him if necessary to steady his nerves.
"E-er... y-yes, but I'm n-not Dia..." What else could he say? The bronzehandler attempted to squirm out of the man's arms, a fierce blush blazing across his pale cheeks. This was incredibly awkward, and he didn't do well hugging most people anyway. "L-look, I... I d-don't know who D-Diasith is, but he's n-not me. I'm Khemres. I'm a wherling... n-not a dragon." To affirm this statement, Khesk chirped, and tilted his head back to look up at the tall human. Getting better, Khemres. Approve.
Zetri, much more acute at picking up other flitters' meanings than any human could ever be, released a sorrowful keen at the image of the dragon slipping between. He creeled sympathetically, then, and imitated the other black's circle before darting over the older flit. A bright chirp, and the bronzehandler's pet swooped over the healer's shoulder to land on the brim of his own human's hat. He issued an invitational trill, watching the other firelizard in hopes he would come join him. Sharing a perch was okay by him!

Neras crooned back to the other black and then flew over to join him on the brim of the wherling’s hat with extreme excitement. His did not have many of these sorts of thing! He would have to find one to play with sometime! This seemed to be a lof of fun.
Tedaon was sure something was wrong with Diasith. The dragon was not acting at all like a normal one telling him all these strange things. The healer grabbed the hat from the dragon’s head, Neras screeching indignantly as he fell from his perch, and held it before he realised what was wrong. Petting the head of the creature he frowned and stepped backwards releasing it from his hug. This was no dragon but something quite different.
He tried to refocus his eyes, a difficult feat to accomplish in the dark of the night, and noticed a pale outline. That must have meant that in his hand he held not a dragon’s hat but a human had. Not wanting to relinquish the garment just yet he twirled it around his hands to distract his thoughts. If Diasith had led him here, to this Wherling, then was there something he needed from the male before him? He’d said that he was a Wherling but how could he be sure of that fact? Perhaps this person, whomever it was, was hiding something from him.
“… If you’re not Diasith… You must know where he is. He led me here y’see. Where is he? You have to tell me.”
He kept twining the hat around his hands in an agitated manner, a worried expression on his face. Perhaps they were supposed to be playing some sort of game! That explained it! As a rider it was important to get to know those whom would protect the Weyr at night and perhaps Dia wished him to get to know this male whilst they looked for him. Yes, it was uncharacteristic of Diasith but it must have been the truth!
He could neither consider nor fathom any other option.
Neras was, by now, rather happy with his new friend and chirped at the black to reassure him that they could easily find another perch. At that he flew close to the Bronze Wher and trilled at the creature excitedly. Perhaps they could sit here!? That would be most fun indeed! This creature looked to be a lot of fun to sit on!

This was great! Zetri had a Hat Buddy! Warbling excitedly, the black sprawled around one side of his bonded's hat, leaving the other side to his new friend. This was the Best Thing Ever! He now had a Friend of Zetri to share his human-hat with! Fluttering his wings, the younger firelizard crooned and scampered into an upright position once more, bracing his paws on top of his bonded's head. Khemres, used to this, ignored the two flits in favour of the tall healer in front of him. And soon it didn't even matter that the pair of blacks had been on his head, because his hat was gone. The albino reflexively grabbed for it, meaning to pin it to his head, but the healer's hand beat his there, and the wherling stood awkwardly, one hand raised while the other man's fingers ran over his white hair.
What on Pern was going on here? Feeling more than slightly creeped out, Khemres ignored his own chattering, scolding flit in favour of trying to figure out what the healer was doing. There was no doubt in his mind that the man was confused because he'd lost a dragon. Even imagining it broke the albino's heart. How could he live like this? How was it even possible?
Not think about, Khesk urged sternly, and his bonded returned his attention to the matter at hand. He had no idea what to do, really -- he had no idea who Diasith was, except that he was a dragon, and he was dead. "I... u-um... I d-don't know, b-but I'm s-sure we can f-find him," the wherling suggested awkwardly. Not that it was possible to find a betweened dragon, but he had to do something until he came up with some kind of a plan. Of course, if he couldn't think of a plan, things were likely to become disastrous rather quickly.
Uncertain now that he was both deprived of his hat and charged with a slightly unstable ex-dragonrider, Khemres cautiously reached out and touched the other man's arm to get his attention, then gently turned him down the corridor which would lead them out to the Bowl. "L-let's go this way first." With that, he stepped forward into the darkness, hoping the other man would be able to follow him... wherever they were going.
Khesk didn't set off after His immediately, opting instead to eye the two black firelizards, both of whom were chittering at him inquisitively. With a sigh, the bronze rustled his stubby wings and then turned after his human. Sit if must, he said to the two flits, and then padded off after His. Zetri squealed in delight and flapped after the wher, then dropped neatly down to sit between the powerful shoulders, perching on a jagged ridge. Oh, this was great! His humanpet's bronzething didn't always allow sitting, and he'd never sat on the bronzething with a friend before! Splee! Khesk was the Best Thing to Sit On, especially because he moved!

As soon as the Wherling said he would assist in finding Diasith Tedaon was torn. Perhaps this was what the black wanted but perhaps it was also a test! To see whether Tedaon would cheat in their game of seek. Then again… It was night and having a wher to help him would be much better even if sort of was cheating. He immediately cheered up and threw his arms in the air in excitement with something of a cheer whilst a deranged grin passed over his face. This was all so exciting! Finally, a chance to look for Diasith with another person! Even if they couldn’t find him tonight they would try again and again until they found his black dragon! For there was only so long a dragon could hide.
“Yes! He always likes hiding in the Weyrbowl! We’ll look there first! Good idea little Wherling!”
He knew the Wherling was not precisely little and that his name was not that but rather Khemres but he much preferred this. Belatedly, he wondered what wher the man was bonded to but decided that would just have to be part of the mystery of the night! For the Wherhandlers were the most mysterious of the Weyr and this knowledge served to reinforce the idea that he was supposed to get to know this handler. Putting the man’s hat on his own head for safe-keeping, for it was a clue to finding Diasith, he reached out to grab Khemres’ shoulder.
“I can’t see as well as you so you might have to lead me!”
Neras trilled with excitement when the bronze-pet said he could sit on him. What an honour! Why, he’d never been able to sit on one of these before! His Black-brother had been much, much larger than this creature. This wher also had strange bits sticking up everywhere. Landing next to Zetri-pal he turned and chirped happily at the other firelizard as the bronze moved off. HOW EXCITING!!! Immediately he started chattering away with excitement asking his new friend where he could have possibly found such an awesome creature.

O-kay then. Definitely not normal behaviour. Khemres tried not to cringe as the healer's arms were flung in the air. He was glad he couldn't see the man's face. It probably would have just made the situation even more pitiful and disturbing. They were not traits that the wherling wanted assigned to any situation he was stuck in. "It is a g-good idea, isn't it?" he agreed tonelessly, and turned towards the entrance to the Bowl. Khesk, what do I do if he doesn't wake up? His dragon's dead, he pleaded helplessly. The bronze issued a soft chirp and looked up at his human with glowing yellow-green eyes.
Do what can. Do everything can. Then will see, he advised simply, and padded off after his human as the young man headed away down the hall. The bronze had seen his handler twitch when the dragonless man's hand landed on his shoulder. He knew that Khemres didn't like physical contact with anyone but his closest friends. And only the one friend at that, really... Khesk sighed softly. His was such a kind person, but he still needed to lose the fear that had been present in him ever since Impression -- and even before that, the bronze was sure. Eventually he would get there. Eventually, he would be the leader that Khesk knew he could be. Until then, the bronze just had to help him shed all the layers of nervousness that hid the steel-strong individual underneath.
Khemres nodded slightly at the suggestion that he would have to lead, and set about doing so, mentally counting to make sure he didn't miss an exit. Not that he should, considering that the passage into the Bowl would be highlighted by moonlight and he no longer had a hat to block out the brightness. He tried to remember if the moons were full tonight. If so, he'd have to steal his hat back. That was probably going to be a chore if the healer wanted to keep it, but he wasn't going to walk around with his eyes shut to spare his vision. The hat was a must.
So was choosing a spot to start looking. Approaching the entrance to the Bowl, Khemres decided that they would head out to the lakeside... mostly so that, walking around it in 'search' of the dragon, he would have time to think. "We'll ch-check the lake first. Dragons l-like water," he informed his human companion, and left the lower caverns behind. The moons were full; the wherling narrowed his eyes against the light and reached out for Khesk, who had dutifully appeared at his side. "U-um... c-can I have my h-hat back?" he inquired cautiously. Blasted moonlight. If not for it, his eyes wouldn't hurt.
Zetri squealed in delight when his Brand New Friend landed next to him, and fanned his wings excitedly. He chittered back, wrapping his tail around one of the bronzething's dorsal spines for extra stability when the bronzething shook himself slightly. Now, time to answer all these marvelous questions! Well, see, he wasn't actually there when his humanpet acquired this magnificent seat, because he'd been told it was dangerous and he would be eaten, but when paleHis came back, he'd returned with the bronzething! The bronzething had hardly been bigger than him at the time, wasn't that amazing? Now he was so big, and he made such a wonderful sitting-spot! Did Neras have any special spots to sit? Obviously Khesk was the Best One Ever, but surely there had to be other fun perches that he didn't know about!

He sure was lucky that he had run into the Wherling for the other man seemed very intelligent. Perhaps he had been searched for dragons and then aged out but had chosen to impress a Wher and that was why he knew so much about dragons. He followed the handler through the Lower Caverns with something of a bounce to his step pleased that someone was finally helping him. He wasn’t insane! He knew that! All those people who had told him that Diasith had gone were so stupid… Even E’don. Tedaon didn’t know why his brother had told him Diasith had betweened…
Yes! Diasith had always loved hiding in the water, perhaps he was hidden there. Tedaon wasn’t entirely sure why the black would bother hiding in the lake but dragon were mysterious beings, not to be toyed with anyway. They approached the entrance of the Bowl and Tedaon looked out into the darkness with a cheerful expression on his face. It fell a moment later when he could not spot the dark shape of a dragon moving about.
Well, the Wherling had mentioned the lake so he couldn’t straight away dismiss the Weyrbowl as a potential Dragon hiding place… He turned his gaze on the man as he asked for his hat back and immediately became agitated. “But it’s a clue… I need it! It’s a clue… Good gracious what’s wrong with your hair!?”
For in the moonlight he was finally able to see the pale ghostlike appearance of the Wherling leading him to his Diasith. Tedaon frowned curiously at the albino. At least he knew a little about those with poor skin pigmentation… He shook his head. That wasn’t important… Unless this was an apparition of some kind. That was also a possibility. However, he was solid so that was thoroughly unlikely.
“Nevermind for we are searching for my Diasith!”
Neras chattered back to Zetri with excitement. Perhaps he could find one of these perches for His! If he could only find out where exactly they had found this wonderful seat. He chattered back and then gestured a wing to the creature’s tail with excitement. It had always been one of hit favourite places to sit because it almost always moved!

Besides a major sensitivity to light, there were other factors contributing to Khemres' constantly hatted state. Namely, his hair. His blasted, shock-white, attention-grabbing hair that nobody who saw him with his hat off ever failed to miss. The inevitable question drew a pained sigh from the albino, and he shook his head, narrowing his eyes further against the moonlight. "Nothing," he replied shortly, and then used the distraction to reach up and snatch his hat off Tedaon's head.
Fortunately, he was ready with an explanation as to why, should the healer actually care. "If the cl-clue stays with us, it can st-still be used," he explained, and slapped the hat back onto his own head, sighing in relief as the light stabbing into his eyes was instantly diminished. Oh, thank Faranth. That was so much better. Now it was considerably easier to see (even if all he could see were fuzzy blobs on the ground in front of him), but even so, Khemres didn't remove his hand from his wher's neck.
"Y-yes, we are," the bronzehandler agreed, and headed out across the Bowl once more. As long as the man wasn't focusing on his weird looks... that was at least as aggravating as this entire situation was disturbing. More so, because he'd been putting up with it for over twenty Turns now. Eventually, being stared at wore on one's nerves... even after enduring it for so long that it became routine.
Zetri warbled excitedly and flapped his wings at Neras, then began to chitter a monologue. He didn't know where exactly His had found this wonderful perch, except that he had come back one night with it and it had been around ever since. Silly paleHis hadn't let him come, so he couldn't be sure, but eventually they should find a seatthing for Neras' human too because really, they were just the best, and yes, sitting on the tail did sound like a great idea! Trilling his agreement, Zetri scuttled on all fours down to Khesk's tail, then perched near the forked tip of it, wrapping his tail around and around it so he wouldn't fall. Oh, this was the best! It was swaying, and moving, and how did Neras ever think of such a brilliant idea?

Tedaon barely noticed when the hat was snatched off his head but he flailed ever so slightly intending to snatch it back. Well, there was some logic to the reasoning from the Wherling he supposed but if Diasith had led him to the clue… Surely that meant he needed to wear it in their search. Then again, if Khemres wore the hat then it was the same as him wearing the hat. “Well… I guess… I just thought Diasith would need me to wear it.”
He wrung his hands around one another again but then shook his head and stepped out into the moonlight, turning to look at the Wherling’s wher. Oh! It was a Bronze! That was most good because it meant he had found someone who could be a leader and lead him to his dragon. How fortunate! Diasith sure knew the people in the Weyr really well if he had picked the Bronze Wherling of all the other handlers in the Weyr! Perhaps the Alpha would have been better but Tedaon could only assume that the Alphahandler was busy at the moment.
“Well, perhaps he is swimming! Shall we go little Wherling!?”
At that, Tedaon started making his excited way over in the direction of the lake humming vaguely. Every now and again he glanced back at his companion to ensure he was following. If he lost the clue then all else would be lost.
Neras watched as Zetripal scurried his way down to the seat’s tail. He chirped excitedly when the other black seemed pleased with the spot. Yes! It sure was an awesome place to sit! He chirped again and sent his friend an image of a big black firelizard and of himself sitting on the tail in something of a heroic sort of fashion. Black seat was HUGE and so much fun to sit on! This was still awesome and maybe the bronze seat would grow as huge as the black one!

"I d-don't think he'll mind too much," Khemres volunteered warily. "Besides, I c-can't really see without it." As pathetic as it was, it was also the truth, and the bronzehandler lifted one hand to keep the hat in place, right where it belonged -- on top of his head, shading his eyes from the sharded moonlight. No matter how much he needed to help this confused person (when he had he started thinking of this as an obligation? And why?), he needed his sight more, or at least what little sight he had. Khesk was really the eyes of the pair, and he knew it. Chirping softly, the bronze moved a touch closer to his handler, so that Khemres' hand could rest more easily on his muscular neck.
Bear with. Is only confused, Khesk piped up gently, and glanced up at his handler with soft blue eyes. May wake up. Look after 'til then. Make sure no hurt self. The bronze lowered his head again to follow the healer, and his human smiled faintly, affectionately caressing the bony ridges on his bonded's back. I know, I know. I have to be a good leader. It's just weird, that's all. I haven't met a dragonless man before and... it's a bit unnerving. Just a bit. Just a tiiiny bit. Understanding, the bronze rumbled softly deep in his throat but made no more response, instead guiding His carefully over the slightly uneven ground. Once they reached the lake, Khemres halted, and the wher continued out in the direction of the water, past the mentally disturbed man.
Seeing his bronze approach the lake itself, Khemres understood immediately, and came to a halt a few feet from the other man, staring at the fuzzy water. "Khesk will check the water," he said quietly, and watched the wher slip into the lake. His bronze was starting to need a bath anyway, but these were hardly the circumstances the wherling had hoped it would occur in.
Zetri received the images of the bigblack and Neras, and warbled excitedly, bounding to all fours and bracing himself against the swaying movement of the tail by digging his claws into the bronzething's hide. Khesk didn't even notice, and so the black flit was free to respond to his friend, chittering excitedly. That was amazing! And it looked like fun, too! Hopefully this bronzecritter would get that big someday, and then he and Neras could totally ride on the tail just as nobly as Neras had ridden on the big black thing! And... oh, their seat was going into the water! Scolding loudly, Zetri sprang aloft from his perch and circled once, then zoomed in a quick circle. Well, if their seat was going to go swimming, they could totally play a game! Tag! Neras was it!

Tedaon’s hopeful grin could not have been more heartbreaking as the approached the lake. Diasith was probably hiding. It was just like him to do something like that. Tedaon placed his hands on his hips in agitation as the bronze wher descended into the depths. Anticipation now as the wher started swimming around in the lake, presumably, for Tedaon could barely even see the ripples of the water. “Tell him thank you kindly. If Diasith refuses to come I may have to speak very sternly with him about Dragon manners.”
He nodded firmly and seriously but then started tapping his foot for something tp do. This was absolutely one of the best nights of his life. Well, for the past few turns anyway. It was so great that he had found such a wonderful leader to take him to Diasith. He would most certainly comment this Weyrling to the Alpha for the assistance rendered. Even if Diasith’s hiding place was too tough for them to find this night they could look again the following night. And the night after that! Until they finally found his black! Of course, if the Wherling had chores he wouldn’t be able to help but whenever he had some time they could look together!
“Has he found anything yet?”
Hopeful once more, he stood on the tips of his toes to look into the water as though this would make the black appear sooner.
It had certainly been most awesome! Neras had been such a great friend to his black brother! The brother was decidedly one of the most awesome things he had ever seen around His. Oh that sure looked like fun too! And the tail moved more than it did with his black brother! It was shorter too. Even though Zetripal might never be able to ride his BronzePet nobly Neras was sure he could have loads of fun with this tail.
Oh wait! No that wasn’t right. Neras crooned sadly as his tiny claws entered the water. Bad pet! No that was wrong. He jumped into the air and was suddenly tagged by ZetriPal. Oh he supposed he could play a game. He should really keep an eye on His though… But this was also fun! And he could see His anyway. Neras darted after the other black firelizard chasing him and aiming to tag him back.

"I will," Khemres responded quietly, and slid both hands into his pockets, staring out across the still water. Khesk was far below the surface now -- swimming, but not looking for the dragon because he knew he wouldn't be there. The bronze was not so concerned as his bonded, who actually had to deal with the dragonless man. When Khesk didn't find Diasith -- because he surely wouldn't if the dragon had gone between -- what was he to do them? True, he could suggest more possible hiding places that the healer's bonded might be lurking in... but he would be lying, and while Khemres was accustomed to fibbing when he had to, deceiving a man about the existence of his dragon wasn't right. Was it better than telling the man outright that Diasith was dead? How would he react if he did hear, from someone who barely knew him, that his dragon had gone between? Did he know already, and was pretending to himself, or did he honestly think that his bonded was still alive?
That was awkward. The albino glanced over at the fuzzy shape of his addled companion, a frown dominating his features even as he turned back to the lake. "No... no, he's s-still looking." Reaching out for his wher's mind, Khemres found him coming up for air. True, he could hold his breath longer than a human, but not as long as a dragon could. The wherling stayed in contact with his bronze until Khesk surfaced and drew in a large lungful of air, paddling about while he took a few moments to breathe. After a few seconds, he dove again, and Khemres could feel him angling back towards shore. He was mostly clean now, and knew that the search was futile because what he was searching for didn't exist.
After a few minutes, the bronze returned to the lake shore, and upon exiting the water, shook himself off violently. A faint chirp announced that he was done looking, and he trotted back to His, pausing a moment to look up at the pale face before moving to his side. Water still ran in rivulets down his rough hide, but that didn't deter Khemres from setting his good hand on the dorsal ridges where it belonged. "He's n-not in the lake." An obvious statement, but what else could he say? He still didn't know how to break it to the man that his dragon was dead, and he wasn't honestly certain whether or not it would be kinder not to.
Zetri warbled excitedly as Neras leapt into the air after him, and darted away over the water, trilling and rolling through the air. Oh, this was fun! Unlike the other black, he was not at all concerned about his humanpet. Paleperson could deal with the tallperson and besides, they could still see them! Not that Zetri noticed that after Neras managed to tag him back; with a squeal of astonishment he whipped around and shot after the other black once again. Not fair! He wanted to win!

”He is a very good wher. You are lucky to have him! I think I saw you impress him actually! Did you see me at the hatching!?”
As he became more aware of his surroundings he was starting to become a little less confused and addled. Enough that he was starting to recognise a few things. Namely, where they were and whom he was with. Well, it would take a short while longer before he was fully able to function.
Tedaon smiled excitedly as he spotted the Bronze swimming to the surface of the water once more but his smile fell almost immediately when Khemres told him Khesk had not found his dragon. Well, perhaps Khesk just wasn’t looking hard enough… Then again, the bronze leader had no reason to lie to him. Tedaon sagged visibly and sighed. But, he supposed, perhaps he was in one of the Personal Weyrs! That was more than likely considering that they were Riders. Even if he had been sleeping in the Infirmary most nights that didn’t mean Diasith was.
“We’ll have to search the Personal Weyrs! Onward leader!”
He would not give up this easily. They would just have to search a little harder. Perhaps it was just that the night sky was making it difficult to see the black dragon. Well, that was why he had the wher! Perhaps it would just be a short while longer… Diasith would have to come out of hiding eventually.
Neras chirped happily when he managed to tag the other black. He chattered excitedly then and darted off. It had been so long since he had felt so at ease with another firelizard. Normally he did not play with others, preferring instead to simply assist His in his work. He was a helpful firelizard and really good at what he did! Neras kept trying to dart away from Zetripal chattering excitedly whenever the other black got closer to him.
