Name: B'nyur (bahn YUR)
Gender: Male
Age: 37 Turns
Sexuality: Bisexual
Location: Dalibor Weyr
Rank: Wingrider/Journeyman Dragonhealer
Personality:
B'nyur, first and foremost, strives to be a reliable fellow. As a healer, it's imperative for him to gain his patients' trust, and as a dragonhealer, it's twice as much so. What he says he will do, he does, and he will do it as well or as badly as he promised. B'nyur is honest almost to a fault: he doesn't sugarcoat anything. It seems to him that his patients better hear their diagnosis and prospectives straight up, rather than making it sound better than it is with sweetened words. That philosophy carries on to his life outside Healing as well. While he's not exactly one to just go off running his mouth about his opinions on people, B'nyur will always speak what he believes to be the truth. If he can't, he simply says nothing.
As a Healer, it's also important that his patients be as open with him as he is to them. Dragons, especially, are rather finicky with whom they will trust outside of their bonded. B'nyur is proud to say that he's never revealed a patient's secret, nor any secret since he got his Journeyman rank.
B'nyur is firm and unyielding in his decisions. While he is rather ponderous and easily swayed while still thinking about the situation (after all, he considers it a nice thing to keep an open mind), once he is decided, he is unmovable. His rank doesn't let him make many orders outside of the infirmary, but if he does give any sort of command, he expects it to be followed. Because he is so dependable himself, he thinks that others will do the same. It's hard for him to forgive someone for breaking his word. He's a type to hold grudges and refuse to cooperate with someone because of past transgressions, no longer how far back the wrong occurred.
One could almost go as far as to call B'nyur stubborn. One of his largest weaknesses as a Healer is refusing to admit that one type of treatment is not working and that another is necessary. However, instead of being defensive and argumentative about his wrong decisions, B'nyur will just become passive and agreeable. He will say that yes, the other person is probably right, but he'll never agree to actually change his ways. It's quite frustrating to deal with him when he gets stuck in his ways, but, to his credit, he honestly tries to do what he thinks is best.
B'nyur is fond of life's little luxuries: good food and wine, a comfortable bed, and a warm fire when the air is nippy. Outside of his main work, Healing, B'nyur is almost a little languid. One could go so far as to call him lazy. He certainly doesn't like to exert much energy, and when he has to do just that, his work suffers. He tires easily, but he's not willing to work on his fitness outside of his wing drills. For this reason, he'll never be one of the Weyr's best Threadfighters.
B'nyur is, generally, an easy-going and friendly man. He's quite easy to talk to, and carries a conversation well. While he's not one to organize parties or be the first to strike up a dance, he's not the one huddling in a corner hiding from the social scene either. He hovers around a pleasant middling. He's hard to rile up, and he's learned a rather impressive patience through his years of healing.
Appearance:
B'nyur is a solidly build man. He reaches a good height at six foot exactly, and he's well fleshed out, and not all of it with muscle. He's certainly not flabby, as a Dragonrider is forced to maintain some level of physical fitness, but his physique can't rival those of most other 'Riders. He carries most of his weight in his torso. His legs look rather short for his height, which makes him look rather precariously balanced whenever he sits upon Oveth. His hands are similarly large, and look rather as if they shouldn't be capable of the delicate Healer's work.
B'nyur's face is not bad-looking at all. He's fairly handsome despite the fine lines already developing around his eyes from so many hours of squinting at his patients' hurts. He has a thick crop of blond hair, which is thankfully not thinning, which he keeps at a medium length, just long enough to cover his ears. B'nyur hates his ears, which he considers too big. His skin is as tanned as a blond can hope, but it still tends to burn a few times in the summer before it finally tans. B'nyur's nose is a little more average-sized than his ears, but still rather large. Thankfully, it is well-defined and nice-enough looking. B'nyur has hazel eyes.
Family:
Tolyur- Father- 63 Turns
Bandra- Mother- deceased
History:
Banyur was born as the only child to his parents, Bandra and Tolyur. The family lived on a runnerbeast farm just outside of Honshu Hold. Bandra was born of a long line of runnerbeast breeders. She was the classic tomboy, growing up on runnerback and galloping the days away, uninterested in marriage or the typical female roles. She learned under her father's teachings everything there was to know about raising runners. She didn't plan to marry, until a sevenday after she turned twenty Turns.
Tolyur was a eighteen-Turn-old messenger, full of a thirst to see all of Pern and have adventures of his own. Shortly after delivering a message to the Lord Holder of Honshu, however, his trusted runner, with which he had bought from his own wages, had stepped into a hole and bowed her tendon. Tolyur led his limping runner to Bandra's family's farm, and was simply entranced by the tall, statuesque young woman. He tied his runner up and approached her. While she expressed little interest in him, he found her charismatic and easy to talk to.
Tolyur, unable to buy a second runner from his meager wages, rented one for a few sevendays from Bandra's family, at least until he could get back to Honshu again. He returned about a month later with the runner in perfect shape. He tried to court Bandra again, but with little success. However, a bowed tendon wasn't a runner problem that healed itself in a month, and Tolyur
didn't want to have to run on foot again. He begged Bandra for a job, and she let him have one as a groom.
Finally, Bandra began to feel affectionate for Tolyur. They married shortly after and took over the family business from Bandra's parents. It wasn't long after that their son was born: Banyur. Both parents were proud of their healthy, beautiful baby. They taught him how to ride as soon as he could walk. However, by the time he was ten, it was more than apparent that Banyur would never continue the family legacy. He wasn't interested in the runners. He did it to please his parents, but it was obvious that he wasn't enjoying himself.
Bandra became pregnant again. However, she was already thirty-two by the time she gave birth again, which is fairly old for a Pernese woman to give childbirth. Something went wrong, and, as a result of the premature labor, both woman and child died. Tolyur and Banyur were devastated, but both were determined to continue on with their lives. Tolyur continued breeding. Banyur, however, was determined to find why his mother had died. He thought that there was surely something he could have done to prevent her death. He asked his father to be sent to the Healerhall. Tolyur, though it pained him to see his son, the last of his family, leave, finally allowed Banyur to go after a few months.
Banyur, at eleven Turns, was taken on by as an apprentice. His mentor, a small, quick man named Umas, was kind if a bit impatient. Banyur learned swiftly. He settled into his work as he had never done with the runners. He actually enjoyed it. It was tough and it was demanding, but it was extremely rewarding. Umas had a brown firelizard that was as quick and as intelligent as Umas was, and Umas allowed Banyur to use him to keep in contact with Tolyur.
When Banyur was fourteen Turns, several dragons came to the Healerhall from Fort Weyr. The Weyr's Dragonhealers were all aging, and they were Searching Candidates from the Healerhall, and planned to train the ones who Impressed as Dragonhealers. Banyur was more than surprised when he was selected. Umas just grinned at him knowingly.
So, Banyur became a Candidate at Fort Weyr. However, while he often lagged behind the other Candidates in the chores, he threw himself into healing. One of the older 'Riders and Dragonhealers, O'ric, became Banyur's idol. He followed the Brownrider around everywhere, eager to help and to learn. Healing humans was nice enough, but healing dragons was twice as exciting. Banyur turned seventeen Turns old when there was a clutch on the Sands. He had never been very enthusiastic about Candidacy, but O'ric told him that if he Impressed, O'ric would arrange for Banyur to become a Journeyman Dragonhealer. It wasn't that Banyur wasn't ready, but it was that O'ric thought that Dragonhealing was much easier when one had a dragon of one's own from which to learn and by which to calm the other dragons.
Spurred on by this thought of Journeymanship, Banyur increased his efforts tenfold in the final sevendays before the clutch hatched. Finally, the big day arrived. Banyur was in the infirmary when the Humming started, as usual. O'ric wished him good luck before going to the Stands, and Banyur sprinted to the barracks. He threw his robe on and entered the Sands.
One of the first eggs to hatch was a small, stocky Blue. He took one look around before wobbling uncertainly to Banyur. B'nyurMine! You are Mine, and I am your Oveth. The little Blue looked so proud of himself. B'nyur was shocked and deliriously happy to have Impressed. As promised, O'ric later promoted him to Journeyman.
Oveth and B'nyur soon proved to be a good match. Oveth was a rather slow-minded dragon, but he was caring and quite willing to follow orders. B'nyur couldn't help but think of an old proverb that Tolyur was fond of saying of runnerbeasts: the slower the mind, the sweeter they are. This certainly seemed to apply to Oveth. Oveth loved to watch his Mine at his new healing work, content to sit in a spot for hours and simply converse with the patients. Oveth never made any witty remarks or sharp observations, but his innocence and truly compassionate nature were second to none at reassuring nervous dragons.
The two graduated weyrlinghood with few problems. Oveth attempted to chase four Greens and a Pink over the course of four Turns, but he didn't catch any of the females. After that, Oveth rarely attempted to chase. As B'nyur was one of the most junior Dragonhealers, he was often stuck with the night shift, so he didn't mind the fact that there were few people willing to pass a night with him.
B'nyur continued to work on his Mastery studies, though it was difficult with a dragon for which to care. He went to the Healerhall about once a month to study and continued to ask the Masters at Fort to help him out. His knowledge and skill at Healing continued to grow, but he didn't have the ambition and drive to actively try to attain Master status.
Ten Turns after Impressing Oveth, B'nyur attended a Gather with the rest of Fort Weyr. An experienced Wingrider such as himself made a fair salary, and so did an experienced Dragonhealer. B'nyur spent a good chunk of his savings on a large flitter egg, which hatched a sevenday later to reveal a Copper instead of the Bronze he'd been expecting. Obviously, he was thrilled, naming the hatchling Shanza. She swiftly proved her worth, as the intelligent little creature was quick on the uptake and soon learned how to make herself useful around the infirmary. A few Turns later, she flew for the first time, producing a healthy clutch of twenty-five eggs, with only one dud. B'nyur sold some of them and gave the others away to his friends and fellow Healers.
After nearly twenty years of living at Fort, news of a new Weyr being build reached B'nyur's ears. Transfers were needed. B'nyur knew that many of the young metallicriders would volunteer to go to try and make a name for themselves outside of the large, well-known Fort Weyr, and B'nyur was also quite interested in perhaps being the senior Healer and actually getting to work nice hours. If there aren't very many fighter dragons, maybe I will catch a female! Oveth thought, also quite excited in his simplistic way. He had still never caught one.
So, it was settled. B'nyur packed up his things and his Healer's tools, and he and Oveth /betweened/ to the Western Continent. They spent a night at Crescent Hold before arriving at Dalibor Weyr. B'nyur was pleasantly surprised to find that he was the first Dragonhealer to arrive. He and Oveth settled into a nice weyr near the infirmary, and B'nyur began to set up the infirmary to accommodate his larger patients. Though another Dragonhealer, a Master one at that, arrived, B'nyur was the generally accepted Weyr Dragonhealer.
It was not long before he had his first serious case, Bronze Shoth, who had been attacked by Kalith for his arrogance in her maiden Flight. B'nyur mistakenly gave alcohol to B'rak, his 'Rider, to knock the Flightlust out of him, which backfired. B'rak came onto B'nyur, who rejected his advances out of fear that it was the lust talking, not B'rak. Bronzeriders did not flirt with other men.
Not much later, B'nyur decided to specialize in herbalry, and as medicinal herbs were scarce on the Western Continent, he built a herb garden on the upper ridge of the Weyrbowl. With much help from Kyrillion, a Smith, he erected a set of removable reflective panes to keep the herbs alive and warm in the cold winters. It was while tending this garden that he met B'rak again, sober and unaffected by Flightlust this time, and the two realized their mutual attraction for each other, becoming weyrmates.
Not long after, F'del, the Weyrlingmaster of Kalith's first Clutch, fell ill of a stomach bug, and began to suffer from long-term withdrawal from fellis. B'nyur agreed to teach the Wavewalkers when they took their first manned flight, and rather reluctantly took the job of later teaching them how to between. However, a chain of mistakes led to three Weyrlingpairs: Kailea of Green Succoth, I'nar of Pink Coath, and A'nar of Pink Zyyenkkichikith; getting lost between. It was a disasterous blow to the young Weyr, but no one took it harder than B'nyur himself. He believed it was all his fault, and fell into a deep depression, shutting everyone out, even B'rak, even Oveth.
Pets:
Copper firelizard Shanza (color=CC9911)
Personality:
Shanza is a rather sensible firelizard, especially for a Queen. She's unusual in the fact that she actually has respect for dragons. She is well aware of the fact that she's several hundred times smaller (in weight, at least) than even the smallest dragon. She'll only try to boss around a dragon or a wher if she's perfectly confident that said creature will listen to her without snapping. All in all, she's extremely intelligent for a firelizard, which greatly contrasts with Oveth.
Like B'nyur, Shanza is highly reliable. She's well-trained to fetch things, behave herself, and be useful in the infirmary. As a Queen, she has a certain level of authority over other creatures, especially other firelizards. Most will succumb to her authority, which is highly useful for commanding B'nyur's patients to relax, forget the pain, and stop moving so he can do his job. She's very good at this, which makes her invaluable to B'nyur. She likes being useful, and she thinks that she's much more important than other firelizards, not only because she's a Queen, but because she has a job.
Appearance:
Shanza is a smaller Queen firelizard, just slender enough to maintain a feminine look but rather more well-muscled than most other Queen firelizards. She is pretty in a simple way but not beautiful. Her hide is a pleasant almost-goldenrod color, which B'nyur keeps well-oiled.
Dragon Name: Oveth (oh VETH)
Dragon Age: 20 Turns
Dragon Color: Blue (000080)
Dragon Length: 29 feet
Dragon Personality:
Oveth is not the smartest dragon, to put it nicely. As B'nyur would put it, "He has about as many brains as this cup of klah." Oveth likes to point out the more obvious things, such as the fact that it's raining, but he says it with a tone that shows quite clearly how proud of himself he is for noticing that it's hard not to feel rather sorry for him. Oveth also has a terrible memory, and he can barely remember even the Weyrwoman's name. He'll come up with nicknames for people that are easy for him to remember. Kalith, for example, is simply "Queenie."
However, Oveth loves everybody. He's too naive to notice other dragons talking about him behind his back: all they have to do is reference to him by some name other than his and he has no idea what's going on. He's determined to find good in everybody. For this reason, he's often confused when B'nyur holds a grudge, and only Oveth can soften him out of it.
Oveth is compassionate and sympathetic. His heart goes out to anyone in a bad situation. While he's never able to offer any kind of wise advice, he's an excellent listener and will sympathize with anybody and everybody who will tell him their problems. He's a true sweetheart that never says a single bad word about anyone.
Dragon Appearance:
Oveth's hide is a consistent dark blue color. He has a few patches of a slightly lighter blue covering his joints, though it's hard to tell in strong sunlight. His muzzle and eyeridges, too, lighten to this color. Oveth's eyes are rarely any other color besides a contented dark blue or green color.
Oveth is a small, sturdily built dragon. His compact build allows him to curl up in a small corner without taking up too much space, which he considers an advantage because it means that B'nyur almost always lets him stay in the infirmary itself, unless there are a multitude of dragons or an extremely large dragon in the infirmary. His muscles are large, but Oveth is not a particularly athletic dragon. In Threadfall, he will have problems reacting to Thread fast enough, and he'll need every ounce of what little speed and agility his color gives him. He has little stamina.

Dragon History:
(copied from B'nyur's history)
After nearly twenty years of living at Fort, news of a new Weyr being build reached B'nyur's ears. Transfers were needed.
