Thump! Thump! Thump!
The sound was getting closer, and it was agitating Lira. She stood up from where she had been laying, moving in front of her harden eggs. Her eyes turned orange with a slight tint of red around the sides and edges of her eyes. After her Flight, she had returned to O`ris happy and content with herself. She had Flown and been caught and eventually she would lay her eggs. And when she did, her demeanor changed like any mother of a clutch would change. She became protective of her four beautiful eggs. Her eggs, the ones she had dreamed about after her Flight. Sure, there would be other Flights and other eggs, but this was her current clutch and she was quite pleased with it. She watched over them protectively, never letting anyone come even an inch closer once they had reached the limit. Now there was this sound again. Someone or something was heading this way, and it was making her nervous.
The person rounded the corner and entered on the Sands. Lira relaxed as she saw that it was O`ris, but without Rhyolith at the moment. The Cyan must have been kept back because of lessons or something. She was not sure, but O`ris was the only person that she even allowed to come close. Even Rhyolith was allowed to approach her eggs as long as she kept those huge claws away. Lira chirped happily at her Mine, sending images of her eggs to him and her eagerness for them to hatch soon. O`ris smiled and stopped a few inches away, offering his arm for the Fire Lizard. Lira rose into the air and landed on O`ris` shoulder instead, caressing her head against his cheek. Even though she was a mother at the moment, O`ris was her Mine and she loved him very much. Ever since she had Clutched, he was out here a lot to check on her and to bring her food. There was never any doubt that O`ris was not proud of her.
"So, Lira, is today the day?" O`ris asked her, looking down at the eggs as he caressed her. He had missed holding her in his arms and against his chest. Lira and Rhy were always there for him. He missed waking up and having her sleeping on his stomach. Lira chirped at him to answer his question. Maybe they would Hatch. He let Lira return to her Clutch and was about to leave when he heard the faint sound of humming. He turned and saw Lira backing up slowly, watching as one of the eggs started shaking. It was not really shaking regularly. It was more sporadic. But, there was not denying that the eggs were Hatching now.

Avalle darted over the Sands, following O'ris. She'd seen him as she had been heading towards the Dining Hall for a snack, but gave up the snack and decided to follow him instead. It wasn't stalking, she'd just seen him in passing! Besides, Avalle wasn't the type to stalk anyway... she just didn't know how to start a conversation, okay? She was just nervous. It wasn't stalking! Thankfully for her, Callistath was napping back in the Weyrling Barracks and wasn't able to tease Avalle about her actions. And thankfully Yulari wasn't nearly as judgemental, and in fact, the Yellow was rather happy to be able to go see her "best friend", Lira and her eggs.
She slowed down as she approached O'ris, waving cheerfully and trying to make it look like she hadn't just been following him. Avalle stopped a little ways away from the clutch at Yulari's insistance, the Yellow knew from her own instincts that it was wrong to approach a clutch that wasn't her own if not given permission. So Avalle was fine waving from her small distance and looking at the eggs from a little ways away, but she wasn't so far that she couldn't talk to O'ris. She hadn't been near the clutch yet, so this was her first time seeing the eggs, though she figured Yulari had already seen them.
"Hey, O'ris! Do you think Lira would mind if we got a little closer?" she said, unaware that the eggs were very close to Hatching. Yulari was kind of enough for Avalle, and she most likely wouldn't have come if she'd know they were Hatching. Not that she would turn away a firelizard if it wanted to Impress her, but she wasn't going to go out of her way to get another one... especially with the growing Callistath to deal with. Avalle had a sneaking suspicion that the Gold would probably not approve of Avalle Impressing another firelizard. She didn't mind Yulari because Yulari was older and quite mature, for a firelizard.
So she gasped slightly when Yulari flew up in the air and began to twirl and hum, very excited that she would be there to see her Green friend's clutch hatch. Avalle cautiously took a few closer steps to O'ris, smiling sheepishly. "Hah, they're Hatching. I have such great timing, huh?" she said with a slightly sarcastic tone, looking at the shaking eggs. There were only four. People would know to come and Impress them, right?

Mine, there's a firelizard Clutch.
{Yes, Valleth, I'm aware. O'ris's crazy Green flitter, if I'm not mistaken.} L'ven responded taciturnly, oiling his stiff new riding straps again. The dry, little-used leather was soaking up the oil nearly as fast as he could slop it on. They're hatching. Go get one. Valleth said, lounging as usual while L'ven worked. {Valleth, I highly doubt that my simple attendance at Hers's firelizard's Hatching is going to make Rhyolith pay any attention to you. Besides, what did we discuss concerning male-ridden dragons?} Valleth huffed impatiently. Am I allowed to think of Mine's welfare instead of my own needs for once? He was about to continue, but L'ven interrupted him. {Yes, of course you can, I've just never known you to do it!} L'ven retorted, a playful smile dancing on his face. Valleth snapped the air next to L'ven's hand with teeth that were now alarmingly large, but L'ven paid little attention to his dragon's shenanigans. Well! I was actually thinking of that letter you sent back to your parents that will take four months to get there! Get a firelizard baby, train it, and use that to transport your mail! L'ven didn't budge from his position, oiling the riding straps. He was not about to take orders from his own dragon! He had to admit that Valleth did have a point, but he wouldn't concede defeat so easily. Besides, Lira was not exactly the most... tractable firelizard he knew. She spent more time chasing off any dragons, firelizards, or people that threatened to take O'ris's attention away from her than doing as she was told. However, Fajra and O'sho both had a firelizard... so did F'del... U'ar... Arsana... even Avalle... everyone important seemed to have one. {They do seem to be a bit of a mark of prestige,} L'ven muttered, mostly to himself, but Valleth heard him anyway, and, knowing that His was wavering, quickly said, Mine! You have me, your big, shiny Bronze! You're already a Wingsecond. Go get a flitter! {Okay, okay! Fine! Faranth, I've never heard of a dragon so eager for His or Hers to get a firelizard!} L'ven hung up the straps over a small pan for the excess oil to drip off, grabbed a leftover bit of the wherry he'd sneaked into his barrack for a snack, and trudged out towards the Hatching Sands. O'ris and, to his surprise, Avalle, were there already. "Hello," he said politely to both as he approached. He was woefully ignorant that there was anything between them, so was not embarrassed about having walked in on them. "O'ris, d'you mind if I try for one of the babies? Or, rather, would Lira mind?" he said, displaying the bit of meat he had in his hand and casting a wary look at O'ris's notorious Green. "Are you trying to Impress one, too?" he asked Avalle out of curiosity; it seemed like a rather obvious question-- why would she be here otherwise?-- but she already had the Yellow, and it didn't look like she brought anything with which to tempt the hatchlings. I got up feeling so down, I got off being sold out, I've kept the movie rolling, But the story's getting old now.
Detritath swept into the cavern, and landed well short of where Lira, her clutch, Valleth, and several weyrlings stood. He did not wish to injury them, though he was getting better at settling his always growing bulk on the ground without rocking it and jarring his legs and knees. His rider had picked up on mounting and dismounting quite quickly, and easily slithered out of his straps and down off the iron's back once he was settled. Shoulders shrugged up as he dug his hands into his breeches's pockets, he swaggered sheepishly over towards the group where humming could be hear.
It had all been Detritath that had gotten him over to the firelizard hatching. Even though he had been vaguely aware that Lira was being quite protective for a green of her small clutch, he hadn't thought much of it. He'd been busy with making use of the new freedom of flying with his dragon. It had been Detritath that had staunchly informed him he could go try to get a flitter. It had mainly involved the iron flying his rider over to the kitchens, insisting he pick up some meat, and flying him over to the clutch. It wasn't like his rider was so stupid he couldn't figure out what he wanted, and he had no interest in allowing the shaggy haired boy to say otherwise.
Though Detritath simply systematically ignored Valleth, by not greeting and simply sitting himself down a couple yards behind K'ber, seeing L'ven bothered the weyrling just a little bit. He couldn't like the bronzerider, though he'd yet to put a finger on his exact ill feelings towards the other boy. He greeted them all, including L'ven in it by extension, with a nod. "Um, Avalle, you already have, uh, Yulari? Don't you?" The question, his way of joining into the conversation, was sweetly said, not at all accusing.
Do you wish to be a Wingsecond? Ask O'ris. Now. Oh, yes, there was the fact that L'ven had beaten him out for being the weyrling Wingsecond alongside Avalle and Callistath. That hurt a little bit, though he didn't let it show. He was fairly certain that it bothered Detritath too, though he feigned no feelings about the matter and simply pretended to leech onto his rider's ill ease of the fact. No one but the single person who knew him inside and out knew that being passed over for Valleth bothered the iron. He would seem like his normal silent and resolute self to anyone else.
"May I try for one as well, O'ris? Lira?" He drew confidence about himself as he spoke, pulling his hands out of his pockets to reveal meat he'd brought so he could stand up straight. Since his pockets already smelled faintly of meat from him putting his hands in them after feeding Detritath when he was young, he hadn't minded. "There's four eggs. Can't hurt to have at least four people around, right?" He tried to smile at them, but it was weak. He liked O'ris and Avalle well enough, but the presence of L'ven there, wanting a firelizard, wouldn't let him pull off cheerful.
It gives me the butterflies, Gives me away, Till I'm up on my feet again, I'm feeling out shined.

Lira looked up and noticed Avalle and Yulari before he even did. She was happy to see them. For Yulari and her Mine, she would make an acception. She chirped and whistled to Yulari, inviting the Yellow to find a spot to watch her marvelous eggs Hatching.
O`ris turned and saw Avalle, smiling at her. She was a sight for sore eyes in his mind. He wanted to hug her, figuring hugs would be allowed by now, right? But he stopped before he could move, noticing others arriving. What did he expect? This was a Hatching after all. But he still kept his gaze and smile on Avalle. Beautiful Avalle. “Guessing from Lira`s chirps, I think she is okay with you getting closer. You considering another one?” he asked her, curious.
He heard L`ven`s voice and reluctantly looked away from Avalle to the BronzeRider. The BronzeRider that would later be vying for attention from Avalle. And, in the corner of his eyes, he saw something else large and landing on the Sands. It was K`ber and his Iron. This was starting to feel uncomfortable for him.
Do you want me to join you? Came Rhyolith`s strong voice.
No, I will be fine. I usually will be, he replied back. “Sure, L`ven. You can try as long as Lira does not have a problem. Same to you, K`ber,” the CyanRider responded, backing away from the eggs some to give the two young men room to Impress. He mentally sighed as he watched Avalle in the corners of his eyes. She was really pretty today? Callistath was certainly rubbing off on Avalle. She was already looking to be the Jr. Weyrwoman that she was being trained to be. The Weyrwoman that he and his heart would always follow.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lynx was off again. Gneith was having a hard time keeping up with her Mine. The Green was so much larger now that it was not funny. Lynx was small and lithe and able to zig-zag around corners and rocks. Even Pretty could keep up with her Mine. But Gneith, the Green only had one option of keeping up with her Mine. And that was flying. Gneith could see Lynx`s small figure below her. She looked up and noticed where Lynx was heading too. Mine? Why are we going this way? she asked.
Lynx smiled as Pretty flew next to her. Because, dear, I wanted to see the Sands. It has been what? A Turn now since I Impressed you? I just wanted to see the Sands again and remind myself of that wonderful day! She continued to run forward, never slowing down nor speeding up. This is where her name came into play. Lynx. Agile. Fast. Cunning. And very aware of things.
She stopped when she got to the Sands and quickly noticed K`ber and L`ven down there. She was excited. The two men of her life were there. Gneith landed near Lynx, looking at the girl before noticing Detritath. Her eyes whirled green and blue. Mine, Detritath`s Mine has a shirt on for once, Gneith comment.
Lynx almost burst out laughing. The Green knew how to get her Mine in the right spot. She grinned at the boys before grinning up at Gneith. “You know, love, I think I might want to join them.” She walked up to the Green and climbed onto her back. It was a little hard without riding straps or anything. She tried to wrap her arms around Gneith`s neck so she could hold on. “Go slowly, love,” Lynx warned the Green.
Gneith lifted up slowly, having to beat her wings harder, but just as hard to prevent her from landing on the Sand roughly which might cause her Mine to fall off. Though, once she was on the Sands, Lynx jumped off the Green`s back and sauntered over to the boy. She waved to both of them, smiling at them. “I did not know you both were here,” she said, trying to make a conversation. She then noticed a third boy, O`ris, and that it was his Fire Lizard that had Clutched her. “I don`t need another one. I already have Pretty,” she said, referring to the Pink that was around her neck. “What about you, L`ven, K`ber? You trying to get one?” she asked.
Yulari happily joined Lira in watching the eggs, and from the images that popped into Avalle's mind, Yulari seemed to consider herself some sort of guardian of the eggs as well. Avalle certainly hoped this wasn't going to be some sort of chain reaction where Yulari suddenly decided she wanted to Fly and have eggs of her own, but she was pretty sure that firelizard brains didn't work that way. Though Lira and Yulari did seem to be very smart for firelizards... but that could just be because she was around them all the time. Well, Yulari at least.
It suddenly got very awkward for her as L'ven approached, though she didn't make to move away from O'ris. He was her friend, and that was all the Weyr would know. It's not like she was... um, hanging off him or anything... and she almost had to surpress a blush at that thought. Instead, she grinned and waved at the Bronzerider. "Hah, no no, Yulari's just friends with Lira so she kind of dragged me here to watch," she said in response, feeling extremely awkward. Of course she wasn't going to say that her real reason for coming here had been to maybe talk with O'ris on the Sands for a while, but naturally now that the eggs were Hatching that was not going to happen.
When K'ber and his Iron arrived she felt even more awkward, and hoped it didn't show. But the Ironrider's question didn't seem directed at her in a mean way, so she was able to smile more relaxed. "Yeah, but she's friends with Lira so she made me come watch. I-I really don't plan on Impressing anymore," she repeated what she'd said earlier to L'ven with a rather carefree laugh, glancing over at the two firelizards perched near the eggs. She couldn't help but notice K'ber's somewhat shakey attitude, but she got along fine with him, didn't she? It must not be directed at her. There was certainly tension in the air though, and she doubted it was just the awkward triangle she was standing in the middle of.
Once greetings to the others that had arrived were over she moved over to where O'ris was, keeping away from the eggs. Not that she wouldn't mind another one... but, yeah, no... not a good idea. "I didn't really mean to come when they were Hatching," she said with a small sigh to O'ris, her eyes on Lira, Yulari and the eggs. "Guess I should have picked a different day to come hang out," she said with a bit of a pout, watching as another girl arrived and began talking to L'ven and K'ber. Avalle didn't really know her, but she gave a small wave that she wasn't even sure would be noticed.
L'ven gave a small smile of greeting to K'ber, forced as it was. He didn't know the Ironrider all that well, except from that party a Turn ago. The other just didn't strike him as all that friendly, and, well, L'ven saw him as competition rather than a comrade. After all, as the two Kingriders of their Weyrling group, they'd soon be vying against each other to prove that they were the most worthy of promotion. Actually, L'ven reminded himself, they were already doing that, and hadn't L'ven been the one to be made Wingsecond over K'ber? It was hard not to inwardly gloat about that, and L'ven didn't care if he did-- the only one who would know was Valleth.
And even Valleth wasn't paying any attention to L'ven with another new arrival, Lynx and Gneith. Valleth rumbled a soft welcome to the pretty Green, his eyes not leaving her. Neither Callistath nor Rhyolith were here, so he was free to leave his attention wholly on her! And, for once, L'ven didn't reproach him. L'ven smiled again in greeting, but with a hint of real warmth this time. Now, Lynx he was happy to see. She was the closest thing to a crush L'ven had... except those weren't allowed in Weyrlinghood, so of course it wasn't that. But she, unlike K'ber, was easy to like.
"Yeah," he said to Lynx's question. "I'm hoping I can train it to deliver messages and whatnot, if I Impress one, I mean," he said somewhat sheepishly, scratching the back of his neck with the hand that wasn't holding the wherry scraps. "So, what're you doing here, if you're not trying to get a firelizard?" he asked, the question sounding rather more blunt than he had intended. It just was a little strange that she was here; the Hatching Sands weren't exactly a common gathering place. But it wasn't like he wasn't happy that she was here! He quite enjoyed her company, actually, but... oh, Faranth. He really needed to leave the girls to his Bronze flirt. He was hopeless.
He turned back to Lira, pretending that the wriggling eggs had recaptured his attention. He took a cautious step closer, inclining his head to Lira slightly as the clutchmother. He didn't know much about firelizard Hatchings, but it was polite to bow to Queen dragons when at their Hatchings, and after attending so many of those, it just seemed natural for L'ven to pay Lira the same respect. He really was clueless about firelizards, as his experience with them had consisted of a fellow Candidate's firelizard attacking him once, and, well, this Hatching. He really didn't have a clue as to how to go about training one. He'd never admit that fact, though! He'd figure it out as he went along.
Well, assuming one of the things bonded to him, anyway, he thought, smirking slightly. However, with only two people here that actually seemed to want a firelizard, the chances were in his favor. There was at least one viable egg. L'ven looked at the single wriggling egg again before turning his attention back to the other Weyrlings and the conversation around him. Valleth had taken advantage of L'ven's absorption in the firelizards to saunter towards Gneith, bowing chivalrously as he approached her. Good day, my lovely lady! How are you doing?
he greeted, padding over to her side and eyes whirling happily. He was clearly in his element, not uncomfortable with his wanton flirting in the slightest. Well, that made one creature in the Sands that wasn't picking up on the awkward, tense atmosphere!
Don't get me wrong, If I'm looking kind of dazzled, I see neon lights, Whenever you walk by.
K'ber thought he heard far off laughter. It sounded like Lynx. Faranth, he was hearing things! Distracted from the conversation, he turned his head slightly, and then, miraculously, there she was, with dark green Gneith! He stared, ducking his head slightly, so that his hair feel in front of his face and he wouldn't end up just gaping at her openly. He somehow kept his jaw firmly shut. What was she doing there? He could understand Avalle, with Yulari helping Lira with the eggs! He could understand L'ven, with his sharding ego, being there! Of course O'ris was there! But why was she there! Then she asked a question, L'ven asked the very question he'd been thinking aloud, and something changed for him. A smile, bright and confident, spread itself across his face as he straightened, looking at her sideways with his dark eyes gleaming.
"Maybe she just wanted to come enjoy your wonderful company, L'ven;" he commented with utter innocence, as if he weren't making fun of the young bronzerider and flirting with the girl. A faint blush crept onto his ears and the edges of his cheeks, but he didn't back down. He just casually looked away from both of them, over towards the two flitters tending the eggs, as if he hadn't done a thing. Then he looked up, smiling right to Lynx. They'd hung out! Even if it had been with Kyril, they'd had fun. He'd managed fine. Detritath had told him to buck up, to become a Wingsecond, which he didn't really care about, but he would definitely manage for Lynx! He would sweep her off her feet! One day, one day he would do that, and the beginnings of one day had to start someday, didn't it? Even as his gaze slipped down to his feet, he still smiled.
"Anyway, Det thought I should come see if I could bond to one of the little mites. You know how he can get;" he replied to Lynx slyly. He glanced up at her, grinning knowingly, trying to remind her of other things the iron had influence which involved her. Of course, the offending young King pretended he didn't have any thought of what his rider was suggesting. His eyes slid down again after a moment, but nothing could wipe away his smile, so cheerful, from his face. He was so proud of himself. Maybe a small bit of it was from the fact he was pretty sure he'd one upped L'ven, which, at least, certainly didn't hurt. Most of it was that he'd actually managed to make witty, for him, conversation with Lynx. With Lynx! His breathing felt a little faster than necessary, and, though he quickly got it back to normal, his heart pounded and fluttered oddly.
Not feeling the need to praise his rider, as that wasn't his style, Detritath was busy, anyway, interfering with Valleth putting the moves on Gneith. He moved towards her, dipping his head graciously to her in greeting to show respect like the bronze. His mood seemed especially cold, when he was normally a little more conversational around the green. Have you and yours been practicing your swimming? He sound detached and to the point, his eyes a composed, swirling blue that hinted at nothing. He continued to ignore Valleth as if the bronze was hardly there, but he seemed to be mentally, subtly trying to force the other royal weyrling dragon, who was actually about as big as him, out of the conversation. It did not seem natural for him to have an interest in her as the bronze did, but he knew what his rider needed.
Trying to focus on why he was there, K'ber moved so that he was level with L'ven. He made sure not to be in front, having no interest in being mauled by an angry firelizard trying to protect her eggs from him. Before turning his last shoulder from her, he did shoot Lynx a quick, apologetic, sheepish look. Then he was staring at the eggs, a couple of which looked like they were moving. There was Yulari and Lira, and he'd seen Pretty often before. The flitters were such amazing, little creatures. They were supposed to be, from legends, related to dragons. Some stories even said that dragons came from them. No matter what, they were such graceful, fine little creatures. And useful. Like L'ven had mentioned, he wouldn't mind training one to carry messages. He figured that Detritath would probably insist on it. The iron liked practical things.
Don't get me wrong, If I come and go like fashion, I might be great tomorrow, But hopeless yesterday.
O`ris looked up at Avalle when she moved back as well, close to him, next to him. He felt some sense of relief that the other young men were no longer paying attention to Avalle but were looking at Lynx. He felt selfish for the thought, but he did not feel guilty for it. He gave a small smile to her, more reassurring than wishing the others were gone. "I am glad that you came to the Hatching," he whispered to her, keeping his voice low so the others would not hear him. "It is really nice to have a friend standing next to you as you are watching you Fire Lizard`s eggs Hatching. But, Callistath`s Clutch will be different. I don`t think a CyanRider has the priveldge of standing next to a Weyrwoman during her Gold`s Clutch Hatching," he said, sounding a little sad. But, in truth, he was very glad that Avalle had come. His smile even said it, howbeit a little small right now. "Maybe Yulari will allow me to watch her eggs Hatch like you are with Lira`s."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lynx smiled at L`ven when she approached the two, about to answer his question before K`ber spoke before her. She gave a light chuckle to both of them, not wanting to admit to them both that she had come down to see THEM. Might as well stick to the original story as to why she was out. "I just happened to be around the area. Gneith and I decided to come to the Sands to remember what happened a little over a Turn ago. I am still in awe by the fact that I Impressed her. But, even still, I am honored to be in the presence of the two KingRiders," she said, almost purring, complimenting them both. K`ber was nice, seeming to be conservative, almost with a power inside of him waiting to be released. As for L`ven, he knew what he wanted, always out there to get, cocky might even be the word for him. But she liked them both. She was not sure if she could choose. Maybe she just ought to leave that decision to Gneith. Until then, she loved being in their presence and even liked having all their attention. It was okay. Avalle and O`ris were talking, so the Weyrwoman was getting attention to. Wait, was that a smile that O`ris was giving her?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Right before the boys turned to watch the eggs again, they had missed the spiderweb cracks that was appearing on the second to largest size egg. It begun to shake violently as the little Fire Lizard inside pushed with all its might to be released. Without much explosion, the little creature tumbled out of the egg, wings already spread, landing on top of its stomach.
The little fire Lizard was a Green, but it was a very dark Green. She stood up after laying there for a moment, staring at everyone. When she stood up, she hissed at them, not sure what to expect from any of them. She tumbled backwards and landed near her mother. Lira chirped encouraging to the Green, but the Green just stared at her.
The smallest egg of the Clutch was shaking more regularly. But, unlike all the time and trouble the Green had put into trying to escape her egg, the littlest egg was able to be cracked more easily. A small head poked out of the egg, chirping at the boys. It was a Black, but he was slightly lighter in color than your average Black.
His Green sister saw him and ran up to him, hissing the entire time. Like a cat, the Green, once she got to her brother, stopped and began to bob her head a little see what the Black would do. The Black merely chirped at her, wondering if she was going to help him get the rest of his body out of the egg. Instead, the Green took a step toward her brother and clamped her small mouth around his muzzle.
There was a slight chuckle from Lynx`s lips at this sight. She had heard of of baby Fire Lizards in the wild eating one another when there was no food available to them, but this did not looke like it. K`ber and L`ven had food for them, so there was no lack of food. And the Green biting the Black`s muzzle look more like play than anything.
Sure enough, the Green let go of the Black after the Black whistled with conern, wanting his mouth to be released. The Green backed up, hissed again, and then turned to head toward the boy that she had originally seen with food. She walked right up to L`ven and gave a mixture of a chirp/hiss, trying to get his attention for food.
Color 001500 Pic
This little Green is very out-going and knows what she wants. She has a tendency to hiss at things she does not like, but will eventually calm down when she finally knows it is not a threat.
With his Green sister finally out of the way, the little Black rocked back and forth, pushing his way out the hole that he had created. The force of his body against a small hole caused the egg to start cracking under finally a front leg was out, a wing, another front leg, a back leg, another wing, anf finally the last leg and tail was free from its prison. His siter had already chosen someone and was getting her attention. He looked at K`ber, almost with a sad expression, as if pleading to the boy to feed him.
Unlike some Blacks, this little guy tends to be cheery, just like his mother. But he can easily become depressed when he is in need of food or attention. He is a tad bit shy, but once he becomes comfortable in a situation, he is very friendly.
Lira looked at the other eggs, waiting for them to move even once. But, they eventually did not. They were duds. Lira chirped sadly, but looked at her two children proudly. How Oblivion would be proud of them. She looked at Yulari and chirped happily at her. Her job as a mother was done for now. She was ready to have fun with her best friend.
L'ven looked over at K'ber. Had... had the Ironrider just tried to poke fun of him? Well, okay then... L'ven prided himself on his accomplishments, but he was not arrogant, and, anyway, not even pre-Hatching T'zar could have taken K'ber's comment seriously. K'ber had just insulted L'ven, and it was a very thinly veiled insult at that. L'ven's brain whirred; he had about two seconds to whip up the perfect comeback-- he was not going to let the Ironrider one-up him, no sir! It was a stupid comment, but L'ven would not respond with another. However, the Bronzeweyrling did not exactly have a lot of practice in petty verbal fights like this, and he failed to come up with anything within the socially-accepted time limit.
So, L'ven switched tactics. If he couldn't think of anything witty to say, he would just act disdainful, as if K'ber's comment was so childish and wherrybrained that he couldn't possibly bother himself to respond. He looked at K'ber questioningly, one eyebrow raised, body language clearly saying, 'Wow, please tell me you didn't just say that.' "Ohh-kay," he said, turning away from K'ber and back towards Lynx. He flushed with pleasure when she complimented them both (though part of was really wishing that Detritath hadn't told K'ber to come try for a firelizard so he could have her to himself), but before he could respond, a hiss and a chirp from Lira drew his attention back on the eggs. This was why he was here, after all.
A Green had hatched, but her hide was so dark that at first L'ven mistook her for a Black. However, a few moments later, a real Black began to hatch, and L'ven realized that the other hatchling was too big and, well, green to be a Black. The Green was insistently hissing at the Black as she approached him, and the Black appeared quite as bewildered at her behavior as L'ven himself was. Was she going to pounce on him? Instead, she leaped forward and... wanted to eat his muzzle, apparently! L'ven joined Lynx and chuckled as well. It was a rather amusing sight. The Black firelizard, however, was not so amused, and the Green released him with another hiss when he whistled in protest.
Done with the Black, the Green turned instead to him. L'ven's eyes widened slightly in surprise as the Green hissed at him. By Faranth, that was quick! L'ven felt a familiar rush of happiness flood through his body that meant he'd Impressed the Green, reminiscent of when he'd Impressed Valleth a Turn ago, but, of course, this was nowhere near as powerful. Still, he couldn't keep an ebullient smile off of his face as he extended his open hand towards the Green, his Green, the wherry bits offered up. The Green turned and hissed at the other three firelizards to make sure that none of them got any bright ideas at stealing her food or her bonded before hopping onto his hand without hesitation and gobbling up the wherry ravenously.
"You hiss at everything," L'ven said fondly, stroking her tiny head with the tip of his index finger. Like a feline, the Green leaned into his touch, before nipping his finger and sending him frantic images of more food. Hatchling was hungry! L'ven grimaced in discomfort, but her teeth weren't sharp enough yet to cause any real damage. Now, what to name her? He was tempted for a moment with Hissyfit, but that was too ugly of a name for her. "Sibilance," he said simply, and the firelizard looked up at him, and, realizing that he did not have more food for her, hissed again. "I'll take that as a yes," L'ven said, backing away from the other two eggs, not quite paying attention to the fact that K'ber had bonded to the Black and the rest of the eggs were duds.
"Thank you, O'ris, Lira," L'ven said politely. "I'd best get Sibilance some food." He nodded to the Cyanweyrling and, almost as an afterthought, to Avalle before stepping away. His long strides carried him quickly out of the Hatching Sands, the tiny creature cupped in his hand. As he passed Lynx, he smiled warmly. "See you, Lynx. I trust I can rely on your help to train Sibil?" He winked before touching Valleth's mind. {Time to go, Romeo,} Ahem, but someone I know is quite attracted to Gneith's and shouldn't be talking,
Valleth said loftily, crooning at Gneith before sticking his muzzle near L'ven's hands to inspect the firelizard within. Sibilance, caught quite by surprise by the giant Bronze pair of nostrils that were bigger than she was, flared her still-wet wings and hissed at Valleth. Well, this will be interesting. Valleth said to L'ven while sending Sibilance a reassuring thought. Sibilance just huffed, concerned once again with her aching stomach and urging L'ven to go faster. "All right, all right!" he said quietly and cheerily, too happy from bonding to the flitter to mind much as he headed to the kitchens.
Do you dream, that the world will know your name, So tell me your name. And do you care about all the little things, Or anything at all.
Ignorant to L'ven acting high and mighty, back to being mostly incapable of playing any such game and it not being much different from how the other weyrling usually acted, K'ber focused on the tiny, hatching eggs. The egg that Detritath had hatched from had been much larger. It filled him with fond memories, replacing the ugly and vindictive feelings he felt towards L'ven and the still not appropriate ones he had for Lynx. Happy thoughts were best for attracting firelizards, weren't they? Their main motivation was food, but they were draconic type creatures, right? Watching the cracking eggs, he realized that flitters were not his strength. Give him a dolphin and he'd do fabulous. Give him a dragon, especially Detritath, and he knew what to do. But a flitter? A pet? He was clueless. He would manage though, if the iron said that he would.
There was a green in the first egg. It was a dark green. It reminded him of Gneith. He didn't know why she came to mind first. She was dark in the color, but the little flittet was an even deeper green in color. Alright, fine, maybe he really did know why, but he thought that he didn't. She was such a hissy creature, even as her mother encouraged her to go make her way in the world. He wasn't sad to see her go bond to L'ven, who she even hissed at. That left the little black, who, while stuck in his egg, she had messed with, the poor confused darling. The pair of them were almost identical in color, he had noticed, except that the green was far bigger than her brother. Just like Gneith, who was not a small green. He wondered why he kept making that reference. He focused on the remaining hatchling, crouching down on the ground.
With his sister gone, the black seemed to put in the extra effort. He forced his way from the egg, and dragged himself free. K'ber watched the little creature . . . look right at him. There was a snap of connection, weaker than the resolute feeling of Detritath, and a sense of hunger. His little black was such a pitiful creature! He hurriedly reached out, offering the sad creature a bit of a meat. The hatchling quickly gobbled it up, but he did it politely, and quietly. He ate piece after piece, until the ironriding weyrling had one hand free. Then he scooped up at the tiny flitter, who easily fit into his palm, and cradled him. With the utmost care and attention, he fed the other handful of scraps that he had to the voracious creature. However, after that, the black, as small as he was, seemed to be quite full. He gave a nice chirp, though it still sounded a bit forlorn.
Excusing himself from O'ris and Avalle, barely noticing that none of the other eggs had hatched, he turned and moved away with the still damp winglet settled in his arms. He considered the firelizard and names as he slowly walked. "Piteous;" he suggested. The black offered no complaint. He smiled. He liked it, given that it fit the little thing's disposition but also sounded nice. 'Pit' seemed like a good nickname for a black. Humming faintly to himself, he walked over to Detritath. He could do that blind, though he almost tripped on oddities in the hot sands twice. He finally looked up when he was faced with a wall of metallic gray hide. He blinked and looked around. Valleth and L'ven seemed to have gone. Right, he could remember that they'd said they needed to go feed the green. And asked Lynx about help. His smile became fainter and dimmer.
I do not think Valleth is good for you; Detritath told Gneith, once the bronze was gone. He had been quiet and attentive while the two flitters had attached themselves, but had been quick and decisive in telling the green dragon once the other young King was gone. It wasn't really about rivalry with him. It wasn't some form of slander. It was simple and clear cut for him. He did not think Valleth was good for anyone; he was too fickle. He and the bronze were not exactly similar in most respects. He wanted to make his opinion clear before he had to go, which he did, since his rider had his new pet. The words were private. K'ber, wrapped up with Pit, was not partied to them, which was not normal. He and Detritath shared everything. Even the iron's obvious pressures and manipulations he was allowed to see without any barrier. Detritath was serious.
"See you around, Lynx. Nice to see you;" K'ber told the other weyrling, sounding absentminded and happy. He was happy with his new pet, who he had no idea what to do with except hold and feed. Detritath dipped his head concisely in farewell and knelt so his rider could scramble up without jostling the pathetic, half-asleep black in his arms. With a surge of rippling muscle and a few awkward wingbeats, he was clear of the ground, and lofting out of the cavern. At that moment, K'ber finally looked up and over his shoulder, watching as they past out of the entrance and the other pair disappeared. Forgetting about L'ven, he smiled, as wide as he could without showing any teeth. Lynx had Pretty, who was a pink. He had Pit, who was a black. Sure, they were both young, but . . . He was quick to snap himself out of that train of thought, for Det.
In less than a turn, I may be flying Gneith myself. You may have Lynx; the iron informed him crisply. He blinked. The dragonets, growing up, were starting to catch onto to everything. He could try to hide it all he liked, but Detritath knew. He didn't particularly care; he more cared about protecting Gneith. However, he knew. He didn't fully understand it, but that had little to do with his age and more to do with him being a dragon and being him. At a turn, he was old enough to be able to do some of his own keeping. Fully developed and grown or not, he would not allow others to organize and rule over everything related to him. Anyway, he certainly knew what a flight was. He wasn't stupid. He knew were eggs came from. Partied to a flurry of all this realization at his dragon's words, K'ber started to chuckle to himself. He didn't feel concerned.
Detritath didn't seem to find any amusement. Of course, he didn't have much humor to him. He landed in the bowl, by the cramped barrack he still lived in. Careful with Pit, K'ber slid down off his back, taking the force of the drop in his knees. Twitching, the black gave a pitiful little cry, before dozing off again. He shook his head at the tiny mite, smiling. A shadow fell over him. Detritath was examining the newest addition to what was previously their duo. He gave a sniff. Stirring slightly, Pit creeled again. I suppose he will do. He is a bit odd. Face falling, K'ber considered those mental words for a moment. Then he turned, looked up at the iron, and raised one eyebrow. It gave the silent question of 'are you really one to talk?' Feigning not being offending, Detritath turned away and marched off in front to go find Pit a place in their room.
If I can't see the sun, Then maybe I should go. Don't wake me, Cause I'm dreamin' of angels on the moon.
