So many of you may know about my character Salina. She's a Harper who was once a goldrider. Many children shy from her, thinking her odd or insane, and others don't believe that she ever was a goldrider. But she loves telling stories about her dragon riding days.
That said, here is my idea. Salina is one of those characters who, if she had a dragon, would make a good search rider. She thoroughly enjoyed her days as a rider, and will tell anyone about it at the drop of a hat. Like, before the hat even touches the ground, she'd be off and talking. But she technically can't search, not being a rider.
This is where you guys come in. Have a character who is uncertain about being a candidate? Maybe someone who has been searched, or a Weyrbrat with rider parents who isn't sure if they want to stand or not. Or even someone who may want to be a stands candidate. Being a Harper, Salina would interact with Weyrbrats the most, and fellow Harpers as well.
TLDR: Salina can convince your character that becoming a dragon rider is the best idea in existence, guaranteed or your marks back. Call in the next ten minutes, and one of her cats will eat a bit of meatroll right out of your hand!

xD I have Fyris, a Dragon Candidate who is incredibly indifferent to actually bring one (she accepted because her siblings thought it was TEH AWSUMZ IDEEAH). So her youngest are weyrbrats because they came along, so Fyris would probably encounter Salina at some point.

Hmm since her siblings want her to become one, they could have Fyris talk to Salina, knowing Salina would try and talk her into it.
Or if you wanted a more casual encounter, one of her youngest acts out in class, and Salina wants to talk to Fyris about it. When Salina finds out Fyris is a candidate, she starts talking about candidacy and dragon riding, telling stories of her days as a rider.

Aww Salina can totally take him under her wing. She can be very soothing when you actually sit down and talk with her.

Hey Turk, I have little Aydan ghosting around the Lower Caverns. He's quiet and creepy and most people avoid him too. He generally distrusts and dislike people, but I could see him maybe clicking with Selina in a weird way. Look at his profile and let me know if you're down for an odd pairing!

I like the idea of him chasing after his flit. I don't know if she'd really notice much of him considering she's a Harper and he isn't one of her students. And hey, the flit could run into one of her cats :P

^ Before she Impresses? Sure! That would work. I also have a weyrbrat in the works, and he'd definitely connect with her since she's a Harper, and he wants to be a Harper (and so would need some convincing to Stand himself!)

A) Oooh, yes, he'd definitely approach her about potentially Apprenticing as a Harper. I mean, he'll be 12 in two more Seasons, so a tangent would work in quite nicely!

She could see him as the grandchild she never had. :) She could also hear of him because Letorin, who's a candi/ap. Harper has just realised that Kay is functionally illiterate. So it might être brought up as a concern that his basic lessons are deficient. |

This could work as well :o Would he then have Kay stop by and see Salina, then? Or would Letorin have Salina go find Kay? Salina's old and doesn't really go too far outside the caverns much.

I have Aedai eventually coming who will be a candidate, but she'd be somewhat conflicted about it even though it's her dream to become one. She's a full-fledged adult though, so Salina and she would probably react somewhat differently than a child and she would.
I also have Nymora who is somewhat younger and a wher candidate. She likes hearing stories from other people though, so even if she's somewhat crass and rude at times, she'll enjoy it nonetheless.
