Pb: Nicole Kidman *Moulin Rouge*
Name: Aedai (I-day) Gender: Female Age: 20 turns (Summer) Sexuality: Heterosexual Location: Holdless Rank: Future Dragon Candidate (Secret Dual)
Personality:
"When you're happy and laughing, nothing can touch you. No one can hurt you."
Aedai is a "good" girl, sweet, happy and fairly gentle-hearted for a Holdless. Or, that is how some holdsfolk and weyrfolk may see her upon first meeting. Her surface personality is not the more rugged or different set of traits that other Holdless have been known for because of their lives as outcasts. Instead she is a bit quirky, finding things to laugh about everywhere she goes. Laughing is good, so is happiness, and though her life has never been easy, Aedai would much rather keep going and hide any pain with a mask gilded by false smiles. Yes, that is to say that most of her "happiness" is faked.
"Family is everything, and it goes deeper than blood relations."
Even the other people that have helped her, the other Holdless, the few traders that weren't as harmful to her sister and she; they are all seen as family. Aedai has a huge sense of loyalty, everything centering around those she trusts and has grown up around. They are more than her family, they are a part of her, and without them she would not be who she is today. For better or for worse, they are the only ones she knows, and the only part of her life she can't live without. Because of this, Aedai will forsake any and all morals she has in order to protect and serve them. This will be explained a bit more later.
No person has as much of Aedai as her sister though. Her younger sibling is what is left of her family, and they have been through much together, especially most recently through the plague. Because of this their ties run deeper than with anyone else. Aedai can forgive her sister for anything, and she will do anything for her younger sibling, even if it means taking the fall for something her sister has done. Though it is not to this same extent, Aedai often mothers and is a big sister to other younger Holdless that she comes across. The children especially are ones she takes under her wing, and there has been many a night where she has gone without food just to make sure that little stomachs are full.
"I'm not one of them, not when it comes to my heart...am I?"
It's a question Aedai asks herself quite often. She would do anything she had to to make sure her "family" is safe and cared for. Yet, she doesn't agree with much of what the Holdless is planning or has done already. Stealing has been a way of life for her, and even with her sister unable to help herself from thievery at all hours of the day, Aedai still has a part of her that resents the life she holds. Her dreams take her far away, to worlds unseen where she can stand for something greater, something that doesn't have to harm anyone else. Yet, this is the only life she knows, and Aedai often becomes a hypocrite simply because there is no other way to live but to do the things she is so against.
When she does them she doesn't even feel remorse either. Conning a person out of marks or food, stealing what she needs, watching as a look out or helping others to escape? They are just part of her job in their group, and she does what she must without a second thought or hesitation. Perhaps if she were to stay somewhere else for a time she would stop and think, and perhaps then her more desired form of life and morals would take over. For now though, there is nothing to make her think about it, nothing to open her eyes and show her a different path, no matter how unsettling her current one may be.
"Sure I'm a Harper....okay, not really, but does that mean I have no talent? I think not."
If Aedai could officially apprentice to something, it would be as a Harper. She can sing well enough, and dancing may be more of her sister's thing, but she's certainly not without talents. Unfortunately, she is Holdless, and more than that, her main talent under a Harper's field involves supplies that are not easy to come by. Sure she can steal some, or even work something out with the passing trader that happens to be more lenient and nice, but it is a talent fairly hidden because of the lack of time she can give it. She draws, and rarely, paints. That is what she loves doing, and though it's not the same sort of passion that fire or glowlight will give her (more on that later) it is still something dear to her heart that she loves doing, and, is not half bad at from what others have told her.
There are times when she and her sister, unmarked unlike their father had been, would go to caravans or smaller holds posing as traders or harpers in order to steal what they needed, or in Aedai's case con was more like it. She could be persuasive when she needed to be, and still can be, though she doesn't like it. The young woman is not one to shy away necessarily from attempting to manipulate another, but that doesn't mean that she agrees with the method, it's just another one of those things she looks the other way for though. The holders and traders that were "not so bright" were the ones she and her sister normally target, being easier to fool with their tricks and surprises.
Unfortunately, between the two and whoever else they had in tow at the time, trouble was something Aedai seemed to have a knack for getting herself into. Or, at the very least, following. This was especially in her younger years before she and her sister learned how to cover their tracks more and work efficiently. Now, there is still trouble to be had, but mixed with Aedai's ever increasing unease at the life she leads, it tends to be something she at least tries to stay away from now.
"Hurt me, and I may let it go. Hurt someone I love, and Faranth help you."
Feisty and quick witted, Aedai does best when she's thinking on her feet. It's come from a life of having to make fast decisions and running, a lot. Her mind just can't shake that flight or fight mode, and most often she has been told to choose the former in order to "live another day" as her father always put it. However, that is only in the case of when Aedai is alone. She has self preservation thank you, but when it comes to being in a group, or when it comes to choosing the safety of herself or someone she cares about (even a child she doesn't know), Aedai will readily step in harms way.
Even if it is just a verbal attack, and those come often enough for the Holdless, you can expect something to be coming back your way. It's not always the best, the wittiest, the smartest, but she will not allow someone to just walk over her or others. That's not to say she doesn't know when to stop though, Aedai is cool and calm enough to understand when it is better to just leave well enough alone. She won't like it, but she will handle it and swallow her pride. Pride, too is something she has. Despite her disagreement with her way of life and even her sister at times, she is proud of where she has come from and who she is. She is Holdless, she is a survivor, and she will continue to exist long after the rest fail.
"Fire?!? You said you saw fire?!?"
This is probably one of Aedai's biggest quirks, flaws, not-so-secret-secrets, whatever you want to call it. Aedai loves fire. In the terran world she would be called a bit of a pyromaniac; unable to resist the impulse to start or play with fire. Sometimes it's for relief, or from boredom, or even to ease tension. No matter how you cut it though, the stuff fascinates her, and thus, so do dragons. She never would set a fire to harm anyone though, after all she isn't into arson. Instead it really just stems from a lack of impulse control and need for that euphoric moment of when a match lights, or whenever a spark takes over the rest of the kindling. There is something just so perfect in that passionate, yet calming scene.
Yet, it is something that she often hides. She's not exactly ashamed of it, but she's not open with it either. Normally people around her find out through happenstance because she can't help herself; and yes, this is not the only impulse that she finds trouble with controlling. She often can be a bit hotheaded and temperamental when she's not careful, and she can even be childish at the most random of times. Thankfully, in her mind at least, she doesn't have the more kleptomaniac impulses that her sister has, but her love of fire, and even glows as well, is bad enough to deal with. She still has scars from when she was younger and still learning how to "play" without getting hurt, and each serves as a reminder that though it is something she can't help, it should definitely still be respected.
Appearance:
"Hair of fire, eyes of water, skin as white as snow."
It's part of a song Aedai's mother used to sing for her, made up of random things as they often are when needed in the middle of the night to calm a frightened child. However, it describes both she and her sister remarkably well. Ironic as it is for someone who loves fire, Aedai's hair is a bright orange and red combination with strands of a golden brown here and there. Thick and rolling in loose waves down her back, it tends to behave for the most part, though there are those random days where it likes to crackle and defy her every attempt at taming it. That's just fine though, it reminds her even more of the thing she loves, and it's part of the reason that Aedai is usually loathe to cut any of it off.
That hair frames a heart-shaped face, which is decorated by a sprinkling of light freckles and other decidedly feminine features. Her lips are a dark reddish pink, contrasting against the pallor of her skin, and end at the straight bridge of her nose. Some may call her pretty, but it is not necessarily with a classic sort of beauty. It's mainly just the striking contrast of her features, and even then she has met plenty of people who dislike the warm appearance. Her eyes are set on either side of her nose, not too widely apart, but neither are they right next to each other either. They are almond shaped and lined by thick lashes that are a darker, red-brown hue which compliment the sky blue of her irises and lay under arched brows.
Build-wise, she is one with curves, though there were moments as a younger girl she wished she could beat them away and disliked the attention that they procured at times. She is not over weight though in the slightest, quite the opposite at certain points in her life, though currently that isn't quite as much. Holdless often takes its toll on the body after all. Aedai is somewhat tall, though not abnormally so at about five foot nine inches. Mostly she covers her body in whatever she can find to use; pants, skirts, dress and tunics, it never really matters. She has no preference, having learned at a young age to not be too picky about such things. Foot coverings are much the same, and though she loves warm colors, she will take any hue as well.
Since she doesn't have necessarily "matching sets", her wardrobe is often mixed and match of various hues and fabrics. Likewise, she often puts up her hair in different ways, and even with beads or feathers that are left over from wild wherries that they have caught, braiding them in whenever she feels the need to be creative. There have been instances of her wearing bracelets made of leather hide bits, or woven grasses as well and clay beads. Occasionally there have been times when a passing caravan may be enticed into a show from her sister and she, ignoring their heritage for a time for some entertainment, and then she does have a nicer piece to put on when performing their dances and song. Though, even that was stolen by her sister from some caravan or hold, perhaps even one they had performed at in their lifetime. She's lost track it has been so many.
Family: Aerrik (Father)-Shunned & Deceased Loradie (Mother)-Outcasted & Deceased (Both lost during Plague) Raeline (Sister)-Alive (played by Stalky)
Pets: Any pets your character has (see the Main Stall in the Market.)
History:
"This isn't a happy story, but neither is it one full of sorrow. It's the story of a girl playing the part she has been given, ever dutiful and yet rebelling against the only thing she knows."
- Act One: A Shunned and an Outcast
- Aedai's parents should have never met by all accounts. Her father had been Shunned, for what reason though he never told his two little girls. It was the one thing that they were not allowed to talk about, and that rule was enforced early on in their life despite how many times Aedai tried to do otherwise. Still, fate has an odd way of doing what socially should never come to pass.
Her mother had been a young healer at one of the holds, again never divulged to her daughters, but they had their guesses. When their father had come to the hold, begging for help and injured as he was, they had turned him away, threatening force if necessary. It was their mother that took pity on the young man, unable to help herself despite what she knew would happen. There had been an order not to, but she left in the middle of the night anyway, slipping to follow the path the man had taken and finding him.
It was love, simple as can be, yet powerful...and condemning.
- Act Two: A girl is born
- Not long after the two had found other Holdless people, the pair had Aedai. She was a curious girl, impulsive in her youngest turns, but quickly learning to do as she was instructed. There was something that just changed, and her mother knew. If this girl had been born in a hold or weyr where listening to her parents or the creche workers didn't mean life or death, she could have turned out very different. That was not the case though, and Aedai learned quickly.
- Act Three: Sisters by blood, Friends by choice
- Everything that she learned, she taught to her sister as the two grew up, the younger coming four turns after Aedai was born. They were thick as thieves, and that statement can be taken quite literally. Though they were not meant to learn at too to young an age, it was quite obvious that they picked up tid-bits from conversations around campfires. The terrors beyond their camps and their parents' arms barely bothered them then, still too young to understand their elders' fears even if they did listen to them aptly.
The two never left each other's side though. If one got into trouble, the other was surely there holding her hand, and most of the time, the one doing the hand holding was Aedai. If she had been a bit impulsive before, but ever learning, she was doing so more quickly now. She became whatever she needed to be to help her parents and the other adults surrounding her; a helper during meals, a watcher of the younger children, a scout later on as she grew older.
- Act Four: Growing up is hard to do
- It was never truly easy though, and many a time she messed up or strayed while supposedly doing her job. Each time she learned to do better, to pay attention, to react more quickly. After a while, it was no longer her mind that made with the actions, it was her body, knowing what to do by some extent. That did not mean that she didn't still rebel. As she grew up, she would sneak out with her younger sister, needing to taste freedom. By some reach, her parents let them go, knowing that they would come back soon enough.
Around the time that she was ten and her sister was six, Aedai's family and some of the Holdless had decided to move to the Western Continent. There were others there, and it was somewhere that hopefully some of the unShunned individuals could go where no one would know who they were. It was a chance that some of them found too sweet to pass up, and Aedai's father made her mother promise to take the children with them. He would come as soon as he could was what he had said...that night was the last time she saw him.
Within the next season they had managed to get a passage on a ship to the Western Continent, one of the unmarked Holdless having family that were fishers and sea traders. It was a risk they all knew, but the small group still held that chance. Naturally, it wasn't long after they had gotten there that it was found out where they came from, and most of the Holdless that had crossed the sea with Aedai's mother and sister and she were forced to find other Holdless on the Western Continent, the family included.
It was around this age, which would have been the beginning of their apprenticeship, that they began to fool caravans and smaller holds and villages. They would make believe that they were Harpers apprenticed to people at the Weyr, or other traders. With no marks like their father bore, they were "free", or so they thought. Once or twice at the beginning of these "games" they were caught, and it was only quick thinking and luck that got them away safely.
Still, turn by turn went and each began to understand what their place in life meant.
- Act Five: Love is the hardest of lessons
- As a teen, Aedai began to learn the hard way that her secret love for fire was something that could be dangerous as well. She had first started noticing the impulses when she was a child, but her parents had always kept her away, and she knew better than to throw her tantrums that followed in front of them. At first she had thought something was terribly wrong with her, but little by little she grew to just accept that she was a bit different. Besides, as she would soon learn, her sister had her own troubles that were not so different.
So, little by little she began to "play" as she would call it, stealing away matches or other things that could cause sparks whenever she could. The satisfying snap and crackle made her feel safe and calm, and it entranced her for candlemarks if she let herself watch. However, they were not without their injuries, and she got plenty of smaller burns on her hands, arms, and even legs as she dropped or mishandled the dangerous element.
It did give her a healthy appreciation and respect for it though.
- Act Six: Steal your life away
- By the time her sister had started showing her own trouble with impulses and stealing, Aedai knew better than to roll her eyes like her mother did, or even reprimand her. She accepted her just as she had always wanted someone to do for her when she first was going through that understanding. Unfortunately, that "acceptance" sometimes went too far and strayed into helping her sister out, planning escapades and stealing more than what was simply needed to survive. One of their biggest heists was when they stole dancing outfits meant for some Harpers at a Hold that were in a caravan. They still have them now and use them in their ruses, but that was the last time Aedai readily went out with her sister with the knowledge of taking something they honestly did not need.
- Act Seven: Plagued by reality
- The most tragic part of Aedai's life came most recently with the plague. The Holdless were hit hard by it, many of their plans stopping, though she was thankful for that part. Her mother though was something she wishes she could change. The woman succumbed quickly to the illness, and even Aedai got sick, though she was able to make it through and recover. Those days were full of fear though, and not even the light of a small ember could make her happy. It was here that Aedai changed, no longer just somewhat rebelling, but still going along with the way of life she had lived so long. Now though, now she started to wonder what was there that was different? What could be more? Yet, she threw herself into helping in whatever way she could, afraid to lose any more of her family.
- Act Eight: It was never supposed to be this way
- Still, at night she dreamed of another existence. There were times she had seen the Dragons in the skies, and she had wanted nothing more to be a rider. They held a better purpose, and they flew with fire itself, they controlled it. They were good, no matter what she had been told. Part of her just knew that they had to be good, and she wanted to be like them, to be one of them. It was a secret desire she kept to herself, whispered in her sleep, and thought of when she agreed to help the Holdless in their schemes.
It really was never supposed to turn out like this, but was can she do? She can't betray the one thing she knows and people she loves...can she?
Dragon Preference:
"One day I'll fly away, leave this all to yesterday.
I don't mind a mauling, just don't kill her. As for colors, I would prefer something female for her, but if it's a really good match, I don't mind a male. Color doesn't matter as much, though some ideas that may work well are white, pink, green, cyan, yellow, grey, black, purple, red, orange, tan, viridian, copper and gold. I bolded some of my favorite ideas, but any color you think fits works well. :)
She's a secret dual just like Nymora is, but I'd like for one to impress one type of creature and the other to impress the other please if they do at the same hatching.
In the event that she impresses a wher instead of a dragon, I'd like Aesk as the name please.
