{desc=Rayna/Talin}} But I don’t waaaaaaant to go anywhere. Can’t we just ask someone else to do it? The Weyrwoman paused in her packing, looking over at the gold dragon with pursed lips. They had tried that course of action and she wouldn’t be satisfied until she had tried for herself to fix this problem. Rayna was sick of inaction and she was sick of sitting there being blamed for everything that had gone wrong. Not directly, perhaps, but the rest of the Weyr saw the chaos that had occurred since Kalith had died and that was all they could see. Avalle was struggling and was now working with the most insufferable man Rayna had ever had the displeasure of knowing.
Over the past few sevendays, she had been gathering food subtly from the kitchens, building up a stock. She knew that Thread’s schedule for the next few days and knew they could avoid that particular difficulty. In some ways, she wanted to satisfy her curiosity and search through the Western Continent as best she could, to try to find an answer. Perhaps there would be traders out on the paths she might be able to question. I won’t be satisfied until I have done something.
Couineth just about mentally rolled her eyes and settled down. It was the dead of night and the only people who might be out were wherhandlers but Rayna had mostly learned their patrols and hoped to avoid them when they left. It would not do for the handlers to raise the alarm. She didn’t doubt their skills but she had deliberately chosen a night where she had basically learned the patrol patterns (and some of the whers on the patrols… Some of the more distractible whers…)
Stealing away in the middle of the night like this made her feel like a criminal and perhaps she was. She was taking with her food and supplies… Supplies the Weyr would likely need but as Talin had said… Perhaps inaction was worse. Rayna strapped in what she could to Couineth’s harness and then held the rest as they quickly banked down to a position just outside the bowl.
I’m tiiiireeeeeed can’t I just sleeeeep? Privately, though, Couineth was almost excited to be spending time with just her bonded. It would be a good moment to have Rayna all to herself and not distracted by other people in the Weyr. If nothing else, at least Rayna was hers and wouldn’t be talking to any other smelly people.
Swiftly, Rayna attached the other items to the harness and then readied herself to leave, scanning the area every now and then, hoping desperately to avoid the watch-whers knowing it was only a matter of time before they were spotted so she had to leave quickly.

It was their night off. Talin wasn't all that fond of nights off of patrol, mainly because Task was never completely ok with being off duty. She had decided that a little hunting trip might make him feel better and they had headed out, the blue rumbling happily in the back of her mind as he tried to find things to kill.
It was the sudden halt in rumbling that stopped her in her tracks. She looked around, tensing. Nice Queen, Task growled, showing her what he saw in the dark ahead of them. She could make out the dragon, of course, a Gold was hard to miss, but she wouldn't have been able to identify her without Task's nocturnal senses.
Talin took a few steps forward, then grinned as her eyes focused. A pack, preperations for a night flight... "Planning a trip, Weyrwoman?" she asked. Task's eyes suddenly glowed yellow with pleased determination as he gleaned what Talin had guessed from her mind and drew his own conclusions.
Protect Queen! he declared to Couineth, padding over to her with his ugly head held high. Task guard! Night danger, Task guard. Good guard. Protect shiny Couineth. Queen special, need guard. He wasn't the most eloquent of whers nor the smartest when it came to flattery, but he was honest. Dalibor had lost a queen already, losing Couineth would be a blow to the already demoralised Weyr that they might not recover from.
"Want company?" Talin's eyes were shining bright with the possibility of action. "Easier to sleep when you have someone to keep watch at night."

As soon as the dragon froze, she knew something was wrong. Couineth stood stock still for a short moment as a foreign voice entered her mind. Whers were not welcome intruders as far as the gold was concerned and this one’s voice was harsh although he complimented her. The compliment was perhaps enough for Couineth to not throw a tantrum that and the fact that she understood Rayna didn’t want to be found.
The Weyrwoman turned and almost relaxed when she saw that it was Talin rather than Audren or someone else. She was certain she would be seen soon if Talin hadn’t already instructed Task to say something. There was hardly any point hiding her intentions. She could lie, of course, that would be easy enough… “Of sorts…” Rayna replied evasively. Pulling a pack tight, she thought quickly. They could fly away now and leave Talin behind but it would only be a matter of time before someone was sent after them. As it happened, it would likely only take them a couple of days… A couple of days were all she needed and all she could handle. Thread would fall again and she needed to be back before then at the very least.
Miiiiineeeeee I thought we would go alooooneeeeeee. Well we won’t be able to go at all if we don’t handle this now. The woman thought it through, quickly. It was true what Talin said, it would be easier if a handler accompanied them not only because they would be able to get places she could not with Couineth. Any minute now.
They had seconds before someone else would spot them. Moments before all her plans would be laid to waste. Meanwhile, Couineth had decided to touch the alien mind of the wher. I am veeeeery special of course, she replied, pleased. “Ok.” She would take the fall for Talin if something bad were to come of this, which she was almost certain it was. “You’re right, it would be better. Safter.” Couineth, he’s going to have to ride on your back. Excuuuuuuse me? Please don’t argue with me and let’s just go. But I don’t waaaaaaant him toooooooooooo. Couineth… The gold paused a moment longer before finally huffing slightly. Fiiiiiine, then, to the wher, You may ride with Mine. Silly thing, she thought with annoyance. Why didn’t they have wings anyway it was so stuuupid.
“Come on, we have to leave soon and quickly.” With that she held out a hand, ready to help both wher and handler settle themselves down on Couineth’s back. She had extra straps that she would be able to use in order to secure both Talin and Task. Seconds. It had to be now.

Task rumbled, pleased that the big gold queen was being so accomodating. Task thank. Task guard special shiny Couineth. Keep safe. Always guard. Only best guard for special Couineth. Special Couineth hurt, all Weyr hurt. Special. Task guard. No hurt. He was having a hard time remembering his words and how to string them together. He didn't do it often. Still, he wanted to make a good impression on the gold he was guarding. Perhaps it was the innate instinct all dragonkin had to bow to queens, perhaps it was his own sense of loyalty, he didn't know, care or even consider it much. All he knew was that Couineth was now his responsibility and he was going to tear apart anything that even looked at her funny.
He climbed up on Couineth's back. He hated flying with a burning passion, but he had a job to do, an important one. He was a queen dragon's bodyguard now and it was his mission to keep her safe. Sometimes, that meant having to do things he didn't like, like flying. He was very careful, not wanting to scratch her as he rode on her back, staying very still.
Talin nodded, glad that Rayna wasn't going to argue. As much as she was motivated by wanting action, she also was concerned about the safety of a single rider going out by herself. Paget had been an experienced handler and that hadn't saved her. It was never good to leave the safety of the Weyr or Hold alone. There would be consequences, of course. She doubted that Audren would be pleased that one of her handlers, even a freshly transferred one that she wasn't truly attached to yet, had taken off. She could live with those consequences if it meant that they could get some investigating done and that they wouldn't lose another queen dragon. They would fight to the death before they let anything happen to Rayna and Couineth.
She climbed on board the dragon, wincing a bit. It was quite far off the ground. She had never been on a gold's back before and she didn't remember any other dragon who had ferried her and Task being quite as large. Still, one did one what had to and Task's mulish determination steeled her own nerves. "I'm ready whenever you are," she said with a grin.

The gold was content for the conversation to end right there because speaking with the wher seemed to be hurting her brain. They spoke waay too strangely for her. Ausk shouted and so did that little black one Couineth had since learned to block. In some ways, she supposed that the blue was a step up from those whers who seemed to think shouting was the only way to speak. With prompting from Rayna she was encouraged to at least make a semblance of effort to be personable. Ok. Yeah. It was as much of a ‘thank you’ as Rayna was ever going to get out of her dragon as the handler and wher climbed on board.
Couineth shifted with discontent at the movements of the wher and handler. If she could help it, she rarely carried others on her back and certainly didn’t care for carrying whers. Some of them didn’t seem to be able to keep control of their claws, the silly things. The gold shifted her weight a couple of times to check that everything was secured properly and then waited once more.
Once they were settled, Rayna took her place and grinned back at the older woman. Rebellion was wrong and something she so heartily disagreed with but sometimes… If there was an end goal, it felt good. In a second, they were off, shooting into the air like a star.
They soared through the night air, higher than the trees and mountains covering land below them. It would be useful if Task could scan below, of course, but they were flying too swiftly. Rayna had mapped some of the surrounding areas for herself and examined various records to glean an idea of where they might go. They flew on until the sky lightened and then slowed, Couineth scanning the area below.
“We’re going to search for some of the holdless or at least some evidence. If we can find something…” It would be enough. Anything was better than nothing. She shouted this against the wind, hoping her voice might carry back to Talin.
As Couineth tired, they slowed their pace and fell into a glide, Couineth only beating her wings to stay in the air. There was no point going Between when they wanted to scan the area below. Soon they would stop and have a rest but it would take time to find a space where Couineth could comfortably land.

It took a supreme effort of self control for Task not to scratch Couineth as they took off and his comfort levels plummetted with the ground below them. He felt for his tal-Mine's mind, reassuring himself that this was all normal and ok and that they weren't all going to die. He could glide a bit, far, far better than Gennesk could, but he could never get near this high up by himself.
Talin nodded, hearing most of Rayna's words. Task stared down at the ground below, focusing on it as a job, now. It was moving too fast, at first, but once they settled into a glide, he could see things better. He leaned over to focus on what was going on below, a little frustrated at the distance. He could do better on the ground. Still, he had an advantage.
Guard! he summoned, sending the large bronze a barrage of images. A few sleepy images responded, then grew sharper. Sharing with Couineth as well, Talin's flitt winged through the dark forest, searching for any indication of presence.
"There." Talin, more used to having to look for danger in the dark, spotted the small clearing first. There was signs of life in there that were not just wild. "It's worth a look."
Tal-mine speak Lisk's. Lisk's holdless family stay near. Lisk's say, Task told Rayna and Couineth, remembering the conversation. Maybe those who had been in the clearing below were Lirmox's kin, the holdless his Talin had been worried about.

It was that moment that Rayna realised just how useful it would be having a wher tag along with them. At night, she and Couineth were mostly useless but Task would be able to see what they could not. It went without say, of course, but Rayna had been reluctant to allow anyone to catch wind of her intentions. In fact, she was certain she was not even supposed to leave the Weyr.
As the bronze sent a flurry of images to the gold, she passed them onto her rider. It was instantaneous and a testament to their bond that it required very little thought on both parts of the bond. Even though her bonded was slightly more determined and concerned, Couineth was content to just glide through the air. Beneath all her annoyances, she too wished to know who had murdered Kalith. As far as she was concerned, no one should be allowed to harm Dalibor dragons unless it was her. Even then, she didn’t want to harm other dragons but she’d never even been given a chance to show everyone how she was just soooo much better than Kalith.
Rayna frowned down to the ground, catching Talin’s words as they spotted a clearing. Everything still appeared to be quite dark but it seemed logical enough. They banked towards the ground and hovered for a moment over the clearing before Couineth pulled her wings in and landed, carefully, although with some difficulty. This area is too smaaaaall Everywhere was too small for Couineth except places in the Weyr of course… Rayna didn’t say this, though, aware that the gold would likely throw a tantrum at the insinuation that this was a problem.
“There is no real hiding with Couineth…” Rayna stated rather obviously. It was merely an observation as she scanned the area, waiting for Task’s affirmation regarding the presence of other creatures. From what Task was saying, it was quite likely that holdless remained in this area. "See anything?"

His son was a traitor.
Oxnam hadn't realized it, though his second-born son had never been one he'd put much hope in, until said boy went on a raid, exposed their group to those no-good dragonriders, and ran away to Dalibor Weyr. He wasn't sure what hairbrained plot Lirmox had been up to, even after he sent his indignant father a letter via his firelizard about life as a wher candidate.
Mierli, to calm her husband's nerves, told him to look on the bright side. At least Lirmox hadn't been Searched, like some of the Holdless children had been later. At least he'd be a wherhandler, who owed less allegiance to a Weyr than a dragonrider.
And he did become one. Lirmox's siblings were excited when they read the letter he'd sent, peering at every detail about his new green wher, Lisk. Even the Threadscarred corners of Mierlix's lips had raised in a smile. Oxnam was disappointed. He'd lost Lirmox to the residents of a dormant volcano, and the only things that seemed to come out of that particular one was political intrigue.
But the middle child (Lionam and Moxie had been born at nearly the same time, as fraternal twins) was a distant figure in the family, and there were other things to worry about. The Holdless village was emptier now, but it still required work - and though the plan the Holdless adults had was to wait for Dalibor Weyr to break itself, there were raids and hunting trips to be had.
Oxnam was on one now. It was up north in the Western Continent, to scope out any potential resources and territory they could use. Moxie had insisted on coming along, but she was a bit too young and to her chagrin she'd have to stay home with her mother and more cautious brother. Mierlix was not the strongest fighter, but he was still an extra man - and he was definitely old enough, and so he went with his father.
It was nighttime, and though Oxnam's least favorite son was up and about in Dalibor, he and the rest of the explorers were not. They slept lightly though, in case of danger.
Danger per se did not come, but a Weyrwoman and wherhandler did. The loud beating of wings and scuttling of awakened wild animals was enough to wake them up. Mierlix was the first up, and Oxnam and a few others followed.
"What is it?" Oxnam whispered the demand to his son.
"We need to see. Come on." Mierlix hoarsely responded.
Part of the group, Oxnam and Mierlix one of those at the front, scoped out the area - until they came to a clearing.
"Well, well." Oxnam softly spoke to himself. A Weyrwoman and her gold; a wherhandler and her blue. "Weyrwoman." He addressed Rayna. He knew what she was. But what was she doing here?
His son was a traitor.

Task roared a challenge as he saw the intruders. They were getting far, far too close to shiny Couineth and her nice, understanding rider who was letting him guard and protect! Talin watched him impassively, waiting until he was nearly on top of the holdless to shred them. "Task!" Her voice cracked through the air like a whip and the blue stopped dead, only a cuple of meters away from them, still stamping and snarling. It was a calculation born of long practice. She grinned a razorblade smile at Oxnam, moving to place herself quite deliberately and casually between the Weyrwoman and the group of strangers. Her sleeves were casually rolled up, displaying arms with more scar than skin. She wasn't holding a weapon, but she didn't need to. She had Task and all around them were rocks and such things that could easily be improvised to smash through skulls and cause damange. Like wher, like handler. "He won't hurt you, he's gentle as a kitten," she told the strangers, her tone light and friendly. "Unless you hurt his queen, here. He's very partial to her, both dragon and rider. State your business here, you're on Dalibor lands and you're not from around here, I can tell." Holdless always had a certain look to them, she found. Maybe it was the lack of the usual insignia that gave them away, or the oddly-assembled clothing...
She turned back to Rayna, although she kept her body sideways to the group, still able to keep an eye on them. "Guard shows that there's another, smaller clearing in the trees just that way which he's alarming for us to go see. These ones' camp seems to be over in the opposite direction, so it may or may not be of their doing." Task growled at the notion that it might be, his claws gouging long marks in the ground as he stamped impatiently. He wanted to destroy them. They were intruders, they were in his lair...
Talin paused, tilting her head. Yes, she could see it. "Wherling Lirmox said that his family perhaps had stayed around this area. Were you maybe hoping to visit? His Lisk is an adorable little monster not too unlike my Task, when he was a wherlet."
A big bronze flit with a serious expression and whirling yellow eyes appeared. He fluttered over to Couineth who was obviously, to his little flit brain, in charge and transmitted a clear image of what he had seen. The clearing was small, but there was greenery growing there that he didn't recognise and that was obviously not natural. Once his message was passed, he went to land on Task's back, eying the holdless with red-eyed suspicion.

Even in the darkness, she could see the movement of the people stepping out from the trees. The shadows mostly covered them, though, as she scanned the group. Still, it was becoming lighter, they had flown most of the night and it couldn’t have been more than a couple of hours before dawn. The address chilled her slightly, perhaps because it was so easy to forget, this far from the Weyr, that she was still distinguishable.
Rayna turned to look at the men, still standing on her dragon’s back. Couineth stayed low, aware from her rider’s tension that this was no time to demand attention. No, this was a time of seriousness and if she needed to defend her rider, she would. Her eyes were a wary yellow, casting her gaze over the group of people as the handler spoke. Rayna had, by now, stepped off her dragon’s back but that didn’t stop the gold hovering protectively nearby.
The wher had shown his strength and aggression, if it were necessary, and with the group of them she was sure they’d be safe… Of course, she didn’t discount ranged weapons, scanning the area carefully knowing that at any moment, a loosed arrow could end her life or that of Talin’s. The assassin’s had long ago taught her to be wary in that respect.
“You seem to be able to recognise me but I’m afraid I don’t have the pleasure of knowing you,” Rayna replied cautiously. Of course, Talin mentioned Lirmox, a young wherling from the Weyr. Rayna had seen his name on records but had never met the handler. Miiine, the lizard thing sends images. There is another clearing nearby. Rayna acknowledged the message with affection sent towards her dragon, encouraging her to remain calm.
“We wish only to talk, not to fight or cause problems to your way of living.” Even if they weren’t from around here, as Talin suggested, they might have some important information. She could not see many horribly marked criminals, at least not in this light, but it paid to be cautious.

Oxnam and the rest of the group stood tense and ready, if still drowsy, to make a move if the two arrivals did. The black-haired man nearly swung his dented sword at Task as the blue wher lunged at them - he restrained himself as quickly as Talin restrained her wher. It took him a moment to register that the woman had cried out Task's name rather than his namesake. Having been a Candidate at Telgar who aged out still had its perks, even after so long.
He quirked an eyebrow as the odd handler introduced herself. Talin gave him shivers. He didn't like her, especially for disrupting their harmless mission, waking them all up in the middle of the night, and not controlling her wher sooner. But the black-haired man would have to deal with her, unless he wanted to jeopardize the whole group and make a mistake like the one his son had made.
"I can see that." Oxnam darkly responded to Talin. Gentle as a kitten, indeed.
He exhaled, trying to calm himself at the mention of Lirmox.
Rayna spoke - Oxnam listened, eying the bronze firelizard on Task's back with rivaling distrust.
"Talk? Very well then." It was cold - they would not have been awake at this time to observe that fact, usually. It made Oxnam quite irritable. The aggressive blue wher and titan that was a gold dragon kept him quiet. It didn't make his mood better, though. The group that had came with Oxnam to the clearing tentatively walked a step or two forward.
"My name is Oxnam. We mean no harm to you for the time being. And I would not be welcome if I visited my son Lirmox," A vague memory of how he thrashed, and was held by the crowd so long ago, and how the tattoo was burnt onto his face. A mistake with consequences. "Nor did I plan to at the moment." He sighed, letting a cloud of vapor form in front of him. "We may be harmless, but thanks to this nice time of 'day' I think we won't be speaking the clearest or happiest. What is it you need to talk about?" Mierlix watched Task and Couineth with fascination - the sleep-addled young man even had something of a slight smile on his Threadscarred face.

Task stood down incrementally. These people belonged to Lisk which meant that they were hers to stomp first, so he wouldn't attack them unless they moved to hurt Couineth. In that case, he would be absolutely merciless. No one hurt the pretty, shiny queen, even when she was whiny. She was Task's to protect!
"Oh I don't know, he seemed intent not to lose contact with his family, I'm not certain he'd be displeased to see some of you, if not you personally. Boys are like that with their fathers at that age, though, I would not worry about it." She hopped off of Couineth's neck, going to stand by Task, placing a hand on his powerful, muscular neck. She left it welll in view, the missing, gnawed off finger long since scarred over and the heavy scarring on her arms were strategically in view. Let him not forget what Task could do even to his handler when angered. "I don't know, I find this time of night a wonderful time to chat. Most do not even remember what they are supposed to not divulge. So tell us, now, what are you doing near Dalibor, if you are not here to visit Lirmox and his charming little Lisk? I do suggest that you start speaking swiftly, Couineth is tired as well and Task is quite anxious to find her a comfortable place to rest without having to deal with you lot."
Guard hopped off of Task's back, going to investigate Mierlix. He looked the young man up and down, sending back information about what type of weapons and gear he was carrying to Task and Talin so that they could react appropriately, if it came to a fight. Task pawed the ground, unhappy at being restrained. He wanted to attack something. He wanted Couineth to feel safe and comfortable. It was his job to guard her, after all.

A shadow of a smile crept over Rayna’s features at Talin’s insistence that Task was a gentle kitten and Oxnam’s response. She understood full well that the group was probably frustrated by the fact they had been woken but then, well, they needn’t have investigated until morning if they had wished. The Weyrwoman folded her arms and frowned around at the group, carefully examining them even in the low light. Some had scars she had only seen on riders, scored by the thread they fought.
In her mind, she made a note to find out what she could about Lirmox when she was able. It could just be that he had some useful information that could be passed onto another party. They really hadn’t investigated the holdless enough as far as she was concerned. At least enough to inquire as to the immediate area around Dalibor.
“I do thank you for your time,” No need to be entirely rude right at this moment, they had the upper hand.
Couineth had shuffled forward slightly, standing with her paws either side of her rider and glaring jealously at the group of holdless. She may not be the more tactical dragon around, nor the most selfless but she loved Rayna in her own special way and these people would not take her away.
It was important not to divulge the weakness of the Weyr so Rayna tried to be cautious with her words. “We have heard some reports of individuals from the wilds taking issue with the Weyr. I understand we are not loved everywhere but there is the potential for violence and we wish to know if you have any information. Are there any suspect areas around where people could hide or otherwise plot harm for our dragons?” As she spoke she watched the younger man that Guard was investigating. Scars on his face… What was his crime? What were any of their crimes that they were out here and did they deserve this fate?

"I'd appreciate it if we'd not talk about my son right now. I don't believe you two came here to discuss him." Had Oxnam been a bit younger, he'd have behaved like a surly teenager himself, but as it was he only thought like one. The man's nose wrinkled in disgust when Talin brought her missing finger into view. She was clearly showing it off. He guessed a wher, probably hers, had done it to her - one more reason why Oxnam didn't want to stand for whers after he aged out of dragon candidacy.
"Now, what's our business near Dalibor? Not everything revolves around it, and right now we were attempting to - "
" - Oi, Ox, shut it, will you?" A tired, gangly man stepped forward, gently pushing his shorter, angrier comrade away. "M'ladies, we were merely scoping out any land or resources we could find that we don't have in our area. No harm meant." With that, the man dragged himself away.
Mierlix watched with a hint of amusement, murmuring a few words to his father, who replied quietly back. When he faced their two investigators again, he was visibly less indignant.
"What he said." Oxnam gestured to the tall man (not the one who was his son) in the same manner that one might very slowly throw an axe. "You are welcome, Weyrwoman - which I assume you are, by the large dragon you ride - Couineth, from what your friend said, yes?" He peered up at the gold, choosing not to stare into her eyes. One never stared into an irritable animal's eyes. Dragons were merely colossal, smart animals. A species that had ignored him through the Turns.
"Now, I can't speak for all of the people living in the wilderness, but our group means no harm. You might want to look around you, as I see you're doing now, there's systems of caves. I don't know much about them. We tend to keep to our area, but there's definitely criminals lurking about. I'm sure those with giant dragons and keen-scented whers would be of more use than an old, regretful man."
Mierlix continued watching Guard and Task curiously. "Definitely he's an old regretful man." he mouthed silently to the two, shrugging a fraction.

Talin grinned. She had made the man ill at ease and off guard, which was exactly what she had wanted to do. She would speak to Lirmox later, about his family. She patted Task as he bristled and growled angrily. How dare these people think they were allowed to talk to the pretty shiny queen! They weren't fit to oil her hide! They should address Talin, who would put the question to Couineth and Rayna, avoiding them having to come in contact with the people Task badly wanted to eat. He grumbled all of this to his rider, letting Coui also feel his indignation on her part. His handler tried not to chuckle fondly at him. It was hard. He was so adorable when he was murderous like this, but that kind of reaction would perhaps make her look unhinged. Not that that was necessarily a bad thing.
She nodded at the information given, though. "Did you find anything of interest?" she asked. "My flitt says there's a field over that way that we were going to investigate." She looked over at Rayna. Task was growling. He wanted to go investigate, but since there were people around, he was perhaps better off guarding Couineth. He was unsure. Maybe Guard could watch the humans while he made sure Couineth was well? Or the opposite? Guard returned to him, reporting on the state of what Mierlix was carrying, he proceeded to return to the group, going to each in turn and making sure they were poorly armed and that Talin knew what to expect. None seemed to have weapons that would be easily used against a creature Couineth's size, although since they were meant to dissuade wild whers they might injure Task.
Talin looked to Rayna, letting her decide what they did next. She was the weyrwoman there, after all, and she followed her orders.
