Name: Alastrin
Gender: Female
Age: 18
Sexuality: Bisexual
Location: Dalibor
Rank: Dragon Candidate
Personality:
Alastrin has a head that’s too often in the clouds for her own good. Her vivid and healthy imagination is good for crafting entertaining stories for her youngest siblings, but it’s a liability if she loses track of what she might be doing which has led to burnt and thus wasted food to the chagrin and annoyance of her mother, resulting in more than once instance of bed without supper. Her father doesn’t put up with such nonsense and requires her strict attention, especially as she is required to help him on his larger (though definitely not largest by any means) fishing vessel. This close management is a source of strife between them and they can often come to shouting as Alastrin is neither afraid of speaking her mind and at times lacks the ability to filter the words coming out of her mouth easily becoming impertinent in the heat of the moment. She is an asset when it comes to charts, maps, and star positions, but despite the fact she is the eldest of her father’s children and was brought up in the seacraft she’s never held much love for it. Even though her father could hire any able journeyman in the craft he relies on her as a familial connection, and she feels that as soon as her brothers are of age and ability they will take her place and she isn’t meant to succeed her father really. She has consistently been caught between the responsibilities her father has saddled her with and the desires of her mother to make her an eligible match, preferably a fisherman with a boat of his own to join her father into forming something of a fleet despite the fact she’d be perfectly capable of running her own vessel if she so desired. Her sisters at sixteen and fifteen turns are often a thorn in her side often picking on her despite being the eldest, but she gets along well with her brothers at ten and twelve turns gladly showing them the ropes more than ready to hand off her responsibilities to them so she can be free to do something more.
Appearance:
Alastrin is perhaps a little taller than the average Pernese female but not by much. As she spends a lot of time outdoors and in the company of her father she tends to be strongly tanned turn round, and even though her father restricts her help with the fishing activity on the boat she is required to help with repairs and competently deck hand leaving her hands somewhat roughened and calloused though her mother insists on a regimen of oils as a preventative and treatment measure. She is commonly involved with the book keeping and cartography as well as pursuing the charting of stars her preferred hobby especially when she is required to go with father to crafthalls and then finds herself summarily dismissed until copying is required, leaving her often with ink stains at her finger tips. Her eyes green verging on hazel and her hair is a very dark brown close to black similar to freshly turned wet earth. Alastrin, finding it a nuisance, chopped it all off one day and has kept it cropped ever since giving her an overall boyish appearance; an active life style combined with often wearing more masculine clothing and the short hair she is often mistaken for a boy to those not paying attention, especially if she wears a cap down low over her face. Sometimes she finds it preferable to move around that way to avoid the male gaze and notice. The softer somewhat heart shaped face can be the giveaway otherwise. When it was long it was wavy, but incredibly thick and difficult to deal with, keeping it short has been a relief even if it is a constant source of complaints from her mother and the basis of jabs from her sisters.
Family:
Parents: Sastrin and Aladane
Four siblings: Two sisters sixteen and fifteen respectively and two brothers twelve and ten respectively.
Pets: N/A
History:
Sastrin and Aladane became matched at Tillek hold when Sastrin had reached the age of twenty-one turns and Aladane had long been nineteen turns. Sastrin’s lineage can be traced through seafarers beyond anyone’s reckoning while Aladane’s family were descended through a smattering of minor holders and often lesser crafters, generally found to be among weavers and embroiderers and the like. Her parents can be affectionate with one another, they did manage to have five children after all, but their realms are strictly divided and Sastrin can often be gone for lengths at a time. Alastrin and all of her siblings were born in Tillek and did not relocate to Western Hold until eight turns previously. Aladane birthed Alastrin during her twentieth turn and thus had reached her thirtieth turn by their move and Alastrin had achieved her tenth birthing day. Her memories of Tillek eight turns later are vague. There were many children and many ships and many captains, but while they all played and learned together she never seemed to make a best friend though she was welcome within the group to make up the settings for their pretend play. Tillek was a place of coming and going it seemed, and with many new and changing faces she finds it hard to remember all but a few names. As more children were added to her home the more she cherished her time outside whether it was with the harpers to learn the duty songs and writing or with her father learning what she needed to know to be of help to him.
Her father chose to move them to better their chances at preeminence among his fellow captains and technically craftsmen. Due to hardships faced by relocation and starting entirely anew in some respects Alastrin was pressed further and further into her father’s service while her sisters often helped at home and participate in various other tasks. They’ve had hard turns and easy turns, but it seems they’ve finally been moving up in estimation as Sastrin had planned. It’s been lonely in some respects as Alastrin has had little time for friends and even less time for the few haphazard illicit rendezvous of youth she managed to arrange, but she has enjoyed recently being able to pass on to her brothers the things they will need to know to pursue their craft with diligence and competence. Even though she and her father can often be cross with one another her favorite times are when they are out at sea when it is quiet at night and she has only the stars to keep her company. Now that their home is quite crowded with young women and men she finds being at home stressful and will try to get away when she can.
It was this desire to get out of the house that allowed for the opportunity of search. She had at least been trying to make a few friends maybe among the other fisher folk youth, more than a friend if there was a certain someone who wasn’t too picky, but it was her luck and honor to be searched instead. Her parents were outwardly proud, but she could tell by their stiffness that they were inwardly disappointed. However, she felt it was the right choice and then more than ever was her father in a position to replace her with someone more capable from the hall and soon enough have her brothers in his employ. Though perhaps at least her mother would be relieved as fighting a suitable husband might have proved a difficulty.
Dragon Preference: I would prefer to not have the character mauled beyond the point where she’d be incapable of standing, and I honestly don’t have a preference. I think a fighting dragon would be suitable, but as it’s been ages since I’ve applied to a new weyr much less a non-canon weyr I will be interested to work with whatever happens.
Note: It's been forever since I've applied to a weyr so if there is anything I can do to make this more solid. Please let me know. :)
