Autumn, 6th Turn, 11th Pass
Sh'len had decided to steer clear of the Lower Caverns since he had
encountered Aydan and Rask in the tunnels. As if to accommodate him the
weather had been unusually overcast, making daytime less of a hazard.
Rubkat was still up there he knew, but crowded behind all of the clouds
it could not hurt him. Though it was only mid-Autumn, Sh'len was bundled
heavily, his diameter increased by half from the layers of jackets he
wore. There were lots of things to do outside and lots of simple things
to appreciate, but most of all there was lots of room for Nivoth. He
hated being indoors without her. They had planned on flying across the
short stretch of sea to the continent to look at the changing leaves
today, but his dragon was predicting rain.
Don't be disappointed, MineOwn. We can go another day. It
would be awful if we got caught in a storm and you got all wet and
caught a cold. She curled around him and nuzzled his cheek with
the tip of her snout, mussing up his hair. Sh'len smiled, running his
hands along the lower part of her jaw. Nivoth hummed happily. That's
okay. Another day is fine. And you're right- it does look like rain.
The darkness suited the time of the day, but they could sense an energy
in the sky. Something was happening behind the clouds, even if they
couldn't see it. Maybe we should go in. Nivoth thought that was a
lovely idea. Oh yes, Mine! I would love that. We can
cuddle up and have a quiet evening, just the three of us. Jay,
who was perched high atop her back, gave a nod, flattered to be
remembered and included. I'll get us some snacks then! Sh'len
offered with excitement. Any maybe a scroll. We could try to read a
story. He liked the idea the more and more they talked about it, so
he trundled off to the kitchens to lay hands on some pastries.
Sh'len hurried back to the entrance a few minutes later, goodies in
hand, only to find that the sky had opened up behind him and was now
filling the Weyr Bowl with water. Dismay registered on his face and his
scrawny shoulders drooped. I'm sure it will let up
soon, Nivoth said from where she had sought shelter with
cheerful optimism. Jay emerged from the wall of rain to join his human,
slick and wet. Hopefully... There were no stairs that connected
to his weyr, so he had to have Nivoth to get to it. Their date would
have to wait on the rain. Resigned, Sh'len went to find somewhere to
wait out the storm. It was close to dinner time so the Hall was
relatively full and the tables crowded. Jay peeped and nudged Sh'len in
the direction of a table against the far wall, unoccupied except for one
person. "Thanks Jay," he said softly, moving that way. He took
the bench on the opposite side of the girl, on the other end of the
table so not to disturb her. His Blue flitter hopped onto the tabletop
and whistled a hello to her though, crossing no man's land to greet her
warmly and nuzzle her fingers. Like Nivoth he had a perpetual hidden
agenda to get Sh'len to interact with other people. There was no way
they could ignore one another now. Sh'len sighed but put on his bravest
smile. "Looks like Jay likes you."
