After taking care of the day's chores, Kyril wasted no time heading for the lake. Truth be told, she was feeling a bit self-conscious in her swimming clothes, which she hadn't worn since the previous summer back at the Hold. Nevertheless, now that the weather was warm and spring had hit full-force, she was eager for the water. She'd always loved to swim, and Ripariath was quite excited, as well.
It was shortly after sun high when they arrived at the lake. Taking a moment to survey their surroundings, Kyril couldn't spot K'ber or Lynx - but she supposed they'd arrive sooner or later. Deciding not to wait for them (the pristine water was far too tempting), she cast of her sandals and waded in, her dragon right behind her.
It was still a bit chilly, but no more than a minute had passed before Ripariath decided his rider needed assistance - the water was still barely up to her waist, and they didn't have all day. Eyes whirling mischievously, he came up behind her as quietly as he could manage and dove underwater, his cornflower blue body gaining momentum and colliding with the back of her legs. Though she'd sensed him coming, she barely had enough time to whirl around before she was tumbling into the water. Thoroughly soaked, she surfaced laughing and splashing water in Ripariath's direction. For his part, he appeared quite pleased with himself as he paddled away from her, his almost-violet hide an intriguing contrast to the deeper blue of the lake. Looking vengeful, and even a bit playful, Kyril darted after him - it had been some time since she'd swam last, but she was physically fit, and it wasn't long before she was moving with ease among the waves, improvising a game of tag with her dragon while they waited for the others to show.
OOC. Sorry this took me so long. >< It's a bit shorter than I would have liked, too. Oh well.

"Come on, Gneith! We do not want to be late for fun! And you will get to see them again," Lynx shouted to Gneith, her ever growing Green, as the pair ran from the Weyrling barracks to the lake. Lynx had managed to bring her swimming outfit for cases like this. When she had still been a Candidate, she would go out to the Weyr lake at the other Weyr with other Candidates and Riders, often with ending with her trying to flirt around with them. But, since she had met two people, now Weyrlings like her, she was not really trying to flirt a whole lot. Besides, it was against rules. But wasn`t Lynx known for being a trouble maker? She chuckled at this thought and continued to run on, seeing the glittering lake ahead.
Gneith bugled happily seeing the water up ahead. They did not come out here often, but now that Lynx wanted to help Gneith improved, she believed that was about to change. I see Ripariath!, Gneith cried out, her pace increasing seeing him. She was glad to see him. She liked talking to others. Though her Mine was good talking to others, there was still that case around K`ber and L`ven. But she had not pushed the subject any further after that one day. She knew her Mine would figure it out. If not, Gnieth might and would one day.
Lynx kept up her running, slowing down so she would not slip and fall on the wet bank. She saw Kyril and smiled, waving out to the other girl. "You beat me here!" she shouted happily, glad to get out of the barracks for this. If every day to the lake was going to be this fun, Lynx might as well live next to the lake. And then a thought crept up in her. K`ber almost lived at the lake too. Maybe she would live close to the lake. Argh! Why these damn rules?! she thought, pushing it to the side to jump into the water.

He opens the window just to feel the chill, He hears that outside a small boy just starting to cry, ‘Cause it’s his turn but his brother won’t let him try, It’s like forgetting the words to your favorite song.
K'ber joined them soon enough, though it was in an entirely different fashion than their land-based arrivals that he came. He burst from the water a couple dozen feet from them, out towards the center of the lake, after around four minutes. He'd been under several more than that, since just before they'd shown up, though that hadn't been consciously intentional. After his explosive surfacing, he settled to bobbing in the water and wiped his shaggy, wet hair from his eyes. He drew in steady breathes, changing the rhythm of his heart with his returned from the depths. He blinked water from his eyes and stared placidly at Lynx and Kyril, who surprised him despite him knowing they'd be coming. "Hi."
Detritath paddled from some far off part of the lake to join his rider. He kept low to the water and his metallic gray hide camouflaged him as it reflected the ripples. Coming up along his floating Mine, he raised his head from the water atop his sinuous neck. He was not entirely proportional with all his parts as he continued to grow and grow. I am glad to see you could make it; he courteously greeted the green and the blue. He lowered his head again and swam into the shallows. He moved with strong strokes. He certainly was developing muscle. Just like his rider.
Once he was well recovered, mainly from the sudden reminder his afternoon was going to contain nothing but spending time with Lynx and Kyril and he still didn't have a shirt on rather than his dive, he moved in closer to them himself after the iron. His feet found the muddy bottom and he stopped, standing with just his head out of the water. "I found a piece of jade;" he said, in a vain effort to figure out away to say something, and raised the small green rock. He hadn't a clue what either of them had been saying before he'd come up. "You swim quite well, Kyril;" he added, watching her and offering an awkward smile. He couldn't bring himself to just offer all the corrections that jumped to his mind.
You were always singing along, It was so easy and the words so sweet, You can’t remember, You try to move your feet.

Ripariath had been chasing his rider through the shallows when he spotted Gneith and Lynx approaching. Distracted from the game, he changed direction mid-stroke and belllowed a cheerful greeting. It was good that His was socializing more, and the blue was certainly enjoying spending time with his clutchmates.
Hello, Gneith! How are you and Yours today?
Kyril waved to Lynx, letting a small but relaxed smile color her face. She had forgotten how much she enjoyed swimming, and the clean water and warm weather were an absolutely divine combination. If she were honest, she was having quite a bit of fun already - although, she supposed, fun wasn't really the goal today. They were meant to be training. Speaking of which, where was K'ber? She'd assumed he would be out here already, but it appeared that both she and Lynx had beaten him...
Or maybe not. Her eyebrows shot up in surprise as, several dozen yards away, the boy in question surfaced. How long had he been under, for Faranth's sake? She and Ripariath had only arrived a couple of minutes ago, but still...
Ripariath, equally surprised and now curious, caught sight of Detritath swimming their way. Eyes whirling a pleasant blue-green, he called a greeting to him, as well.
We are glad as well, Detritath. It is good to see you and Yours, but is Yours all right? I did not know humans could do that... He was referring, of course, to the amount of time K'ber had spent underwater. The blue was well aware that His could not do that, and he could sense that she was rather impressed.
As K'ber came closer, he held up a piece of jade for the girls to see, and it immediately caught Kyril's attention. Without really meaning to, she began thinking of all the ways the beautiful green stone could be polished and incorporated into, say, a knife handle or a goblet or something of the sort. Jade wasn't easy to find these days, either. However, she was quick to reign in her imagination and quash it - after all, it wasn't as if she were going to be smithing anytime soon, and those sorts of thoughts would only make her miss her old craft. She had loved it, sure, but she loved being a dragonrider even more, and she didn't want to do or think anything that would make Ripariath feel uncomfortable. He had no reason to be guilty, of course, but that never seemed to stop him. He had always worried about His and did whatever he could to look after her, whether or not she needed him to, and she knew he hated to think that she missed her old life.
To K'ber, she smiled and said of the jade: "It's beautiful." And then he complimented her swimming, and her smile became as awkward as his, even if it was quite genuine. She sensed that he wanted to say more - perhaps offer her a tip or criticism? - but something seemed to stop him. She shrugged off her curiosity, though - perhaps when they got to know each other better he'd say what was on his mind. She figured he'd have quite a lot of useful advice, if he did.
"Not nearly as well as you do, but thank you." She didn't think she was blushing, but there was nevertheless a bit of shyness about her expression now. It wasn't a feeling she was used to (and she could feel that Ripariath was quite amused by her reaction), and so she quickly averted her gaze and glanced at Lynx, wondering where the more extroverted girl would take the conversation, now.

Gneith kept going, heading toward the lake with full speed. She opened her wing sails, letting the wind slow her down rather than her feet. She hit the water head on, her eyes whirling in shades of greens and blues. Today was definitely a good for swimming. And she was excited that her Mine and her were going to be swimming with her friends. She looked over at Ripariath and swam over to him. We are doing quite well. Mine has been looking forward to this since the day it was suggested. It has been a while since she went swimming and the thought of it was making her excited. She loves anything that makes her feel free, she replied, and then turned to notice Detritath. She rumbled happily where she swam, enjoying the fact that she was surrounded by friends that she got along with. This was indeed a perfect day to go swimming.
Lynx smiled as she saw K`ber swim over to Kyril and present a piece of jade to her, even if it was show. A bit of jealousy flared up inside Lynx, but she quelled it down. K`ber was merely showing it to the girl, right? Yeah, that had to be it. But Lynx did agree with Kyril`s comment. It was a beautiful shard of what was once a larger piece. She nodded as she finally made her way into the water. It was a bit cold at first, but the sun was helping to make it warm. She made it into the water up to her stomach before lightly lunging into the water to start swimming. She swam over to K`ber and Kyril, but she took her place next to Kyril. She did not want to appear hanging all over K`ber, even though him without a shirt on was very tempting. She even felt her cheeks growing slightly pink at the idea. She tried to push it to the side when she saw Gneith`s eyes looking at her. For her dragon, she had to ignore these thoughts for now. But the feelings? She could never ignore them.
"How long have you been here so far, K`ber? All morning?" she said, teasing him. But, knowing him, she would not doubt it. But she offered the young man and the other young girl a smile, trying to refrain from appearing to stare at K`ber. Right now was a time of friendship, not flirting. Though... Kyril did Impress a Blue and Lynx did occasionally flirt with other females. She just preferred males most of the time. She mentally shook her head. No, Lynx. Bad, Lynx. Be good. Right now is friendship time, not flirting time.

What if this is just the beginning, We're already wet, And we're gonna go swimming.
"Is there a problem with that;" K'ber responded to Lynx mildly, ducking his head. He had been out there since after he and Detritath had eaten, in the middle of the morning, just a couple hours after they'd woken up, which meant they'd been out there hours since. His face dipped below the water, and he blew bubbles out his nose, so that they trailed up in the water. He straightened after a couple of moments, pressing his feet into the murky bottom of the lake. A few water weeds tickled at his ankles and calves.
He is perfectly alright; Detritath reassured Ripariath. Rumbling pleasantly back to the other two, he lifted his head and looked back towards his rider, who was standing behind him, to see if he would explain. In the water, the weyrling was in his element. He was more comfortable.
Trying not to blush, like the girls were, at Kyril's compliments, he pocketed the little piece of jade. He'd just been showing off his little find. "It really isn't that hard! I can do it for longer;" he said hurriedly, like a young child who was eager to please or wanting to show something off.
Drawing in a couple of deep breaths, he arced back into the water, pressing his feet into the lake floor so he could launch himself up to get a shallow dive. He disappeared, heading out into the dark depths of the lake. Behind him, Detritath started to count out for Gneith and Ripariath. It was a steady count, to an odd rhythm that his rider had taught him. 1 swimming dolphin, 2 swimming dolphin, 3 swimming dolphin; he began patiently. He didn't even bother to turn to look where the boy had disappeared, since he knew exactly where his human was, constantly aware of him at every moment.
. . . 20 swimming dolphin, 21 swimming dolphin, 22 swimming dolphin . . . There were a few bubbles every so often out in the lake, but it was impossible to tell if they was from K'ber, a fish, or just a random pocket of air going up. The surface was placid except for the slight disturbances of wind making waves. The sounds of the Weyr were distant there. It was peaceful. It was calm, with no sign of the diver. There wasn't a trace of him amongst the well of blue. He had just vanished, as the moments past on and on. He'd been swallowed up by the deep. . . . 30 swimming dolphin, 31 swimming dolphin, 32 swimming dolphin . . .
. . . 300 swimming dolphin, 301 swimming dolphin, 302 swimming dolphin . . . Detritath seemed tireless in his counting, steady as ever. Even though his rider had been gone for minutes, he did not seemed at all concerned. He hadn't even moved a muscle. He knew he was alright, wherever he was and whatever he was doing. It stretched on and on, and he just kept counting. There wasn't heads or tail of the youthful rider of the iron. Most people couldn't hope to hold their breath for a minute, or two, at the most, so where was he? . . . 360 swimming dolphin, 361 swimming dolphin, 362 swimming dolphin . . .
Finally, something was rising in the water. It didn't seem to moving with any great speed. But it was K'ber, and he surfaced, drawing in one deep breath. He didn't seem in any hurry, breathing in and out over and over again as if he hadn't been down over six minutes. He was very focused for a moment, and a bit flushed behind his tan skin, but then he turned towards the girls and grinned at them. His iron had already informed him of his count, though had kept it from him while he was diving. "I can clear four hundred;" he assured them, a bit sullenly, apparently not overly impressed with the time he'd spent underwater.
Why can't I breathe whenever I think about you, Why can't I speak whenever I talk about you, It's inevitable, it's a fact.

No wonder you spend so much time swimming! It is good that Yours can still do something that he enjoys, and is good at. Mine tries to hide it from me, but I know she misses working metal very much. Ripariath said solemnly to his companions, watching his rider as she spoke with Lynx and K'ber.
K'ber was quick to assure the girls that it was no difficult feat, and Kyril grinned, faintly amused. Just as she was about to assure K'ber that they didn't need a demonstration, he dove underwater and disappeared. Well, if he wanted to put on a show, she certainly wasn't going to stop him; it was quite impressive. And, as Lynx had surely noticed, the boy was damn good looking.
Ripariath, floating languidly next to Detritath and Gneith, relayed the count to her as the seconds ticked by, and she could sense his curiosity. A tense silence fell, though it wasn't an awkward one, and she glanced briefly at Lynx to see what her reaction was.
The minutes stretched on, and though she was inclined to think more than once that something had gone wrong and K'ber was in trouble, she knew better. Detritath was perfectly poised and calm, so there was no reason to worry. Still, it seemed a terribly long time before, at last, K'ber broke the surface.
She wasn't sure she'd hidden her surprise completely, but there really wasn't any reason to. She was among friends, after all, and why not let them know she was impressed? She smiled at K'ber when he assured them he could clear four hundred. "I have no doubt."
Ripariath was intrigued, as well, and rumbled his approval at the feat. What Mine means to say is that Yours is quite talented, Detritath.

Lynx was a bit taken aback by K`ber`s comment about him being out there for most of the morning. Lynx was not going to be mean about it. Sure, she might tease him some for it, saying if there could be a way to live on the lake, K`ber would live there for sure. Lynx closed her mouth, letting Kyril and K`ber talk while she watched them. Then K`ber said something about being able to hold his breath for a long time. She blinked and watched in fascination as the boy ducked below the surface to prove his point. She started counting, keeping on track with Det, with her version of counting. She waited and watched, feeling a bit worried that K`ber had not surfaced yet. But Det seemed fine. K`ber had to be fine. Right? And then he came back up, and Lynx felt herself give a small, mental sigh of relief. Sure she had been taken aback by his earlier comment, it did not mean she did not like anymore. Though, she was very please with his ability. And she smiled brightly, letting her smiled speak for herself.
Gneith watched at Detritath`s Mine submerged himself under the water a second time, except he was not coming up as quickly as other dragon`s Mines would. She began to worry for a moment, and looked to Detritath for encouragement not to worry. Sure enough, Det was counting and was acting completely normal. So Detritath`s Mine had to be alright. Maybe K`ber was a superhuman, a non-normal human with some secret ability that he was sharing with only them. That was a fun. A secret! She almost giggled to herself, but stopped herself when K`ber emerged again from underwater. She was impressed with his ability. That is very Impressive, Detritath, she said to the Iron. Your Mine is very good at that. And Mine thinks so too. But she has other thoughts like how long it must have taken your Mine time to be able to hold his breath for that long of a time.

You are the girl that I've been dreaming of, Ever since I was a little girl, You are the girl that I've been dreaming of, Ever since, ever since.
They were concern about you; Detritath told his rider, voice mild and apathetic. He had sensed it, seen them watching him with those colors in there eyes. They being Ripariath and Gneith, of course, as they were the ones he could read. He was clueless to Laura and Kyrillion, as he would generally refer to them outside of his rider's respect and companionship of them. He didn't let a trace of smugness touch his mental tone; he felt no such thing. However, K'ber, still concentrating on his breathing, gave him a sharp look, probing at his mind. He gave away nothing, passive and unerring. His rider looked away, drawing in yet another slow breath.
Detritath bowed his head to Gneith and Ripariath, in a modest lack of answer to their praise, relaying to his quiet rider. Ripariath says that she means that you are quite talented, Mine. Gneith's is curious about how long this took you to learn; he said, paddling about lazily. K'ber took in another breath, smiling awkwardly at the two girls. The deep, cool water below called to him, comforting. The firm presence of his iron helped to ground him in the airy world.
"Thank you;" he told Kyril, and Lynx, bowing his head. He searched for the words, and thought about how he had learned. It seemed like his whole life. It had been his mother, and his sisters, and becoming a dolphineer. "I've been training for years, though I'm out of practice now;" he started. Even though he managed to squeeze in a bit of swimming almost every day, when there wasn't a lot of training scheduled, he wasn't spending eight hours of day in the water like he once had been. Detritath was worth it, of course, and he found himself growing. "It really isn't that hard. I can teach you two! I mean, if you want;" he mumbled. He rubbed the back of his neck with out hand from nerves; he could keep himself above the water by just scissor kicking. The part of his chest above the water rippled with muscle with each movement.
One! I'm biting my tongue, Two! He's kissing on you. Three! Oh, why can't you see? One! Two! Three! Four!

Out of practice! Wouldn't seem like it to your average bystander. But then, Kyril knew very little of dolphineering. But of course it would have taken years of practice to be able to do what K'ber could, seemingly with very little effort; she understood that kind of dedication well. She'd worked years and years in the hopes of becoming the best of her hold's metalsmiths, perhaps one of Pern's best, though she would never know now if she might have succeeded. Thank Faranth the Weyr had a forge, at least, that she could use on occasion, else she didn't know what she would do. Of course, she didn't have nearly as much time to dedicate to her craft as she used to, but she had managed to start a new project between weyrling lessons. Within a few months, with any luck, she'd have a new knife ready to be sold or given away, and she'd be using every truck she knew to pretty it up and make it strong.
When K'ber mentioned that he could teach them, Kyril's eyes lit up with curiosity. She would certainly be interested in learning. Never pass up an opportunity to learn something new, her grandfather had always said. And she'd always taken that advice to heart; it might as well have been one of her rules. She smiled, and nodded, though otherwise masked her curiosity and excitement.
"I'd love to learn. What about you, Lynx?"
She smiled at the greenrider, confident that she would agree, as well. After all, it was easy to see what she and K'ber thought of each other (well, easier to see Lynx's emotions than K'ber's), and she had a feeling the two would jump at the chance to spend more time together. Of course, she might end up feeling like a third wheel... but it hadn't been that way so far, so it was unfair to make that assumption.
Ripariath, floating languidly and enjoying the water, watched the human conversation with interest and some amusement. He had enjoyed spending time with his brother and sister; if K'ber teaching the girls meant that they would spend more time together in the future, he was more than happy to go along with it.

Lynx`s face lit up when he said that he could teach them. Her smile returned to her face and her eyes seemed to widen. Lynx was definitely feline in how she acted and looked at times. So her nickname was not for only one reason. Lynx nodded with Kyril`s answer. "We would love to learn, if you have the time," she said. Sure, she wanted to spend more time with K`ber. And may, from this, spend some alone time with the young man. But, Kyril was good company as well. The girl was calm, rational thinking, and had her head and heart in the right place. Lynx liked the girl very much as a friend. And Lynx did think highly of the girl, even more so now since they had first started hanging out. Lynx liked people in general, but the more and more she spent time with certain people, the more and more she either dislike them, felt apathetic, or liked them. And Kyril was certainly one of those she liked. And K`ber, there was no question there. She really liked the guy, though she wished he would sometimes make it better known to her that her attentions were not going into deaf ears. After all, K`ber was quiet and reserved, and L`ven was talkative and out-going. At least L`ven had responded to her attentions. His response had been one of interest in her. She really hoped that K`ber liked her.
Gneith watched her Mine from the distance, swimming around in circles around the other two dragons. She suddenly had an idea, though it seemed childish. But, surely Detritath and Ripariath would not mind. Ripariath, Detritath, why don`t we play a game while they are talking with each other. We can play tag. I am sure we have not played that since we were young. I can go first and chase you, the Green said, diving under the water to start the game. She looked above her and decided which dragon she would try catch first. She set her sights on Ripariath and flapped her wings, trying to gain speed in the water as she started to surface. She would surface up on Ripariath if he did not move soon. The game of chase had begun.

Starting with the ABC of it, Getting right down to the XYZ of it, Help me solve the mystery of it, Teach me tonight.
K'ber grinned at the pair of them when they accepted. "Oh, I have plenty of time. It's fine;" he assured Lynx. Spending more time with her, and Kyril, because she was nice too, he had all the time in the world. Of course, after the joy of having them accept to learn how to hold their breath, he recalled the fact that he would then actually have to teach them. He ducked his head, licking his lips. He wasn't bothered by the taste of the lake water on them. If it was going to kill him, he should have dead months ago. What was he supposed to do? He hunted for confidence, but it seemed absent in their presence. In Lynx's presence. He tried to remember his own lessons, but his last had been two turns ago, and not for breathing. He'd excelled in that area, and had been a senior apprentice.
However, the lessons had been drilled into his brain since he was seven, since before he'd even been an apprentice. He raised his chin, Detritath pushing in the back of his mind. "Alright, first, move so that you stand flat footed on the bottom with your shoulders above the water;" he told them. He struck forward, settling in front of where both of them would be standing, since he was slightly taller, and nodded approval over their positions once they were settled.
"Now, breath in. Five count. One swimming dolphin, two swimming dolphin, three swimming dolphin, four swimming dolphin, five swimming dolphin;" he counted. No embarrassment came at the odd count. It was the one every apprentice learned. Some dolphin and human pairs had special ones, their own little clicks, but that was the basic one. "Hold. Wait until you feel lightheaded. You won't be in sync now. Let it out. Don't strain. Just let it out. Keep going until you feel the need. Breath in again. Do it again;" he instructed, watching them. He felt some pride that he could recognize the little motions of proper breaths. He tried not to eye Lynx too much as he watched. It wasn't fair that she was pretty. He turned to see what their dragons were doing without them. He was playing teacher, and he was naturally observant, with his dark brown eyes that could manage soulful well.
What are you doing, Detritath? Blue Ripariath and green Gneith appeared to be greatly involved in something fun, and the iron was swimming away. He appeared quite intent on the area he had made his rider, at one point, determine to be exactly the deepest area, way out in the middle. The strokes his strong legs were rhythmic, not hurried, but he moved quickly through the water.
I do not wish to play tag; Detritath responded. He didn't sound apathetic to the idea, like he disliked it, but he sounded quite dignified. He had always been beyond playing. It wasn't his sort of thing by nature, even if Gneith, who he liked, instigated it. Grinning, K'ber turned and moved to touch Lynx's shoulder, to show her how to stand up more properly and support her weight off her lungs.
What I need most is post graduate, What I feel is hard to articulate, If you want me to matriculate, You'd better teach me tonight.

Kyril returned Lynx's smile, happy that she'd agreed, as well; though she'd been at the weyr for some time, her own rather reserved nature meant that while she had quite a few acquaintances, she didn't consider many of them friends. Lynx and K'ber, of all the Wavewalkers, were the ones she'd spent the most time with, and the ones that had successfully crossed that barrier. She would gladly accept any opportunity to spend more time with them, and not just because Rip had been encouraging her to be more social, as of late.
It seemed to take K'ber a moment to compose himself, but when he did she quickly followed his orders. Moving back slightly, until her shoulders stood above the water, she dug her feet in and made sure she was well-balanced. She breathed in, following his count. It took her longer than she'd thought it would to feel light-headed, but the moment she did she began to exhale. And then she did it again.
She eyed K'ber and Lynx, as the former stepped forward to help the other girl with her stance. She watched to see what he corrected, and how, and tried to mimic it; in order to hold one's breath as long as K'ber had earlier, she imagined it took not only a lot of practice, but a lot of nitpicky technique.
Ripariath, who himself had dove underwater to evade the green swimming after him, let his mindvoice reverberate with soft, quiet laughter. He did enjoy this swimming thing very much; perhaps he could practice tricks in the lake, feats and stunts that could later be pulled off in the air. For the moment, though, he was content to let Gneith chase him, turning sharply every so often and swimming in large, dizzying circles. He was not often this outgoing, or this playful; he supposed it was the green that brought this out in him. Her happy, spirited attitude was contagious.
When he spied Detritath swimming deeper into the lake, he followed suit; more room to maneuver would mean a more challenging, fun game. Surfacing to snatch a quick breath - Gneith was right behind him! - he took a moment to observe the much larger iron, who didn't want to seem to join in the fun. Would you like to be our referee, Detritath? Every good game needs a referee, I think.
