Paralee
A voice rang out in the cool afternoon air. Oh. She’d fallen asleep.
Paralee
It was getting a closer.
Paralee
Paralee’s eyes flew open as she recognized the voice. It was her brother Dian’s. Why was he calling her? It wasn’t dark yet. She still had a few more hours of daylight didn’t she?
The brunette sat up, looking at the sleeping form next to her. So she’d fallen asleep as well? A grin appeared on her face and she quickly got ready to leave, pulling on clothes and tapping the sleeping figure on the shoulder. The blonde turned over, looking slightly disoriented. Paralee giggled at the girl’s reaction, leaning forward and planting a kiss on her forehead. “I must go my love,” she chirped softly, backing towards the door. She could hear Dian’s voice getting louder in the halls. With a last glance at the blonde, Paralee stepped out into the halls- and into the chest of her older brother.
He grabbed her shoulders staring her in the eyes. “What were you doing?” he asked, though he knew exactly what she’d been doing. Paralee looked up at him innocently. “Me?” she asked, slipping out of his grip and heading down the hall towards the main entrance. Dian ran after her, but she managed to escape him and get out into the sunlight. “Paralee!” he yelled after her but she merely laughed and ran towards the caravan.

Take your time coming home. Hear the wheels as they roll. Let your lungs fill up with smoke. Forgive everyone.
With a cheerful bugle, a purple dragon burst into the air above the hold and caravan. He wheeled down, coming to land in an empty patch of dirt off the main pass. With his fingers loosely curled around riding straps, W'al peered down at the ground as it drew closer and closer. The sharpening focus didn't make a single bit of fear jump into his heart. He'd never found something quite as good as the feeling of flying with Kerath. The occasion was especially great, since they came on search to the Southern Continent. It was a joyous thing, coming looking for candidates. With Kalith about to clutch and Nikianeth rising for the possiblity of a few more eggs, the Weyr could use some candidates, from wherever they might be found. Kerath had chosen Southern Hold, and thus the purple landed on that patch of land near it. He let out another bugle, half of the simple sake of doing so and half to make sure everyone knew of their arrival. Pulling off his flight helmet and tucking it under an arm, W'al slipped free of the straps and slid to the ground. A passing boy was staring at them. "We come searching. Go spread the word;" he said, with kindness and a big grin. With a yelp, the boy ran off to do just as he said. Kerath rumbled with amusement, settling back on his haunches to wait. He felt a candidate. He would find one. He was sure of it, and it would be great fun. Stretching out his long legs in front of him, W'al leaned against his foreleg with great casualness, unbuckling the front of his jacket. The southern air was hot, even though it was fall rather than spring in that hemisphere. He grinned. It was going to be fun; they tended to make it fun.
I don't think I'd been misled, It was a rock 'n' roll band, I'm still standing, Take your time coming home.

Paralee stopped at the first bugle, she turned and let out a whoop of triumph. Yes! She’d been waiting for a Search rider! She ran back at Dian who seemed quite confused. Grabbing him by the arm she dragged him towards the caravan. “What are you doing?” he asked suspiciously, glancing back at the dragon in the sky. Paralee giggled,” You’ll see!” she chirped, stopping by the caravan. “Aster! Silas!” she shouted. Two confused faces appeared. “What?” the taller of the two, Aster, asked. Paralee turned, looking over her shoulder. “Get over here wherrybrains!” she demanded, tightening her tiny grip on Dian. Perhaps she could get rid of a few of her brothers today, she had far too many.
She pulled her brother, with the other two close behind, towards the purple. Not at all intimidated by the hugeness of the sub king she walked right up to the dragon, shoving her three brothers in front of her. “Afternoon! Any of these take your interest Mr. Dragonrider? “ she asked the dragonrider.

Chances are when said and done, Who'll be the lucky ones, Who make it all the way, Though you say I could be your answer.
Boys, and girls, but mainly lots of little boys, assembled in front of the purple with a respectful distance. After all, none of them knew he wasn't likely to do much harm to a single soul, and mainly found them highly amusing. However, there was one brave set, three boys and a girl leading them along. Most of them were older. At least one of the boys looked to be too old, but the girl looked to be right, in her upper teens in turns. W'al grinned at her bold question, not responding but looking to Kerath. Not bothered by her approach, the purple leaned his head down close to them and gave a sniff. He turned his head, considering them. That one; he said, turning a faceted eye to the girl.
With a nod, eyes refocusing, W'al turned to peered down at the brunette. "Yep. You seem perfect, according to Kerath. What's your name?" He grinned at her, since what she had said implied that she hadn't been the one she'd been trying to get picked. It was nice of her, to try to help her brothers get searched, though a little bit silly. "We're all the way from Dalibor;" he continued. The other hopefuls were glaring at the brash group, but settled as Kerath gave them a few sniffs, but he didn't seem very interested. "It's a long ways away, but would you care to be a candidate?" He didn't expect her to refuse. She could, if she wanted to, but few frowned too much at the honor of standing.
Chances are we'll find a new equation, Chances roll away from me, Chances are all they hope to be, Don't get me wrong, I'd never say never.

Paralee watched the rider. He had heard her, she knew that but what was he thinking? Surely ONE of her brothers would be right Standing right? Brown eyes moved from rider to dragon, then rider again. What…? If she’d been anything like the daughter her mother wanted she would have jumped as the purple brought it’s huge head to close to her but all she did was stare. What were they waiting for? Was he smelling them? Surely that didn’t have anything to do with being a candidate!
She was going to say something when the rider nodded, apparently to his dragon. So who had he chosen? Her? No, that couldn’t be right. She hadn’t… but this might be better! Why just get rid of one brother when she could be rid of the whole sharding thing? No more shared portions or roaming around the wilderness. And she wasn’t a Healer or anything but she was sure all these short lived relationships couldn’t be good for her (though she did enjoy them).
Dalibor. Where was that again? It was one of the newer Weyrs she assumed, Western continent right? Well that would be a lovely change of scenery. She looked up at the rider, flashing a confident grin. “Paralee,” she chirped, glancing at the purple as he checked the other group of hold children. “I’ll take you up on that offer,” she said happily, suddenly imagining herself with a dragon of her own. Oh! She could just imagine the looks on her brothers faces is she visited them on a dragon!

Chances are we'll find two destinations, Chances roll away from me, Still chances are more than expectations, But possibilities over me.
"Nice to meet you then, Paralee, really. I'm W'al;" the young weyrlingmaster, and, at that time, searchrider, said. He glanced back behind him to Kerath. The purple gave a snort. There weren't any others amongst the crowd, not that he could sense. None of them would be good candidates. Nodding, he gave a firm shrug to the crowd, making it clear that they were done and had made their choice. It was really Kerath's choice, and he would never argue or try to contribute to such a thing that he, or any human, knew nothing about. However, it was his job to make it clear and carry it out. They were a team, one in the same, two halves of a whole. He was the translator, and the enforcer, should anyone complain. It wasn't his favorite job, but, with any luck, nothing odd would occur.
W'al shifted closer to Paralee. "Go get your things. Wear a jacket;" he kindly advised. Dalibor, even with its warm temperatures for its northern location, was colder than the fair southern weather, and nothing was as cold as between. He sent her on her way, and then fidgeted with the harness of the straps that fitted around Kerath's chest, doubling checking the fit with hands that were deft from experience. Once he was sure that they were good, as they always were, he pulled himself up, feet knowing how to gently grip the purple hide beneath them. Perched atop Kerath's back, he gazed down at all those that still hung about, waiting for Paralee to get back. He stuck his flight helmet, at a jaunty angle, atop his head and swung his feet in the air without a care.
Chances are waiting to be taken, And I can see, Chances are the fascination, Chances won't escape from me.

Paralee nodded, “Nice to meet you too W’al,” she replied with a smile. The purple, Kerath was it, seemed to have decided that there was no one else in the crowd.
“Yes sir!” she quipped, raising her hand in a mock salute. With a grin she grabbed two of her brothers, and dragged them towards the caravan. “Come on Aster,” she called to her other brother. The three boys exchanged glances, it wasn’t as if this was strange behavior for her. Leaving her brothers at the entrance to her parents make-shift tent she burst through the opening. “Hello hello!” she chirped to them. Her mom looked up from her sewing. “Where were you? We were-“ Jaii started but was cut off as Paralee hurried forward, sitting beside her and wrapping an arm around her shoulder. “Shh!” Paralee said.
“Imagine this,” she began. “Your little daughter, one of the Dragonriders of Pern!” Her mom stared at her, “What?!” Her dad was in the corner grinning, he would need no persuading. Paralee watched the older woman’s expression carefully. It was obvious that she was surprised, but would she allow it? Well, Paralee had decided on the short walk over, she was going even if she didn’t agree. Even if- “Alright.” Paralee blinked, she’d expected more of a fight than this, her mother was so willing to give away her only daughter? Slightly disappointed, she had quite a good argument thought up, Paralee stood up. “Oh! Thank you thank you,” she said happily, hugging her mother and father. Paralee flitted out of the tent and into her own (the one good thing about being the only girl was getting a tent to yourself!) grabbing a bag and stuffing it with clothes. And more clothes. She pulled a ribbon out of the pile, using it to pull the hair out of her face. She had about a dozen of them and they went into the bag too. Closing it she pulled it over her shoulder, grabbed a jacket, and headed out of the tent and towards the dragon. She stopped at the purple’s feet, ignoring the crowd and looking up at the rider. “I have returned W’al and Kerath,” she called up to him, smiling at the purple.

Cause in the dark, I can't find my feet, Built my world on promises, Colorless and cold.
W'al, and Kerath, watched the hurried approach of their search selection. Their eyes, both different shades of gray, carefully marked her progress. They were patient in their waiting. Neither rushed a move. They would have been good at chess, had it been a game in their world or they'd had any interest in strategy. They made good teachers and searchers, in their own ways, jokers and pranksters as they were. They basked in the southern rays of Rukbat, enjoying the fleeting moments they had in the warmth. Dalibor might be warm for where it was, but it wasn't as warm as there, and he'd always been a warm weather person. Kerath enjoyed lively sun and surf and warmth himself. He basked in it.
Then Paralee was there. From the purple's back, W'al peered down at her. He adjusted his helmet on his head, moving it so that it actually sat properly and wouldn't fall off. He grinned at her formal, odd words. She was definitely candidate material; she'd make a good dragonrider. Not that he knew much about that. Apparently, N'tal would be a good dragonrider. D'lios would be a good dragonrider. He shook his head slightly, a barely discernible motion, and dispelled thoughts of his weyrlings. For the future of Pern, they flew, they searched, they taught! "Great;" he said. Then he leaned down, stretching out one long arm, and grabbed her by one arm. Strong, if skinny, he pulled her up onto the slender but firmly built back of Kerath, who crouched so it wasn't that far of a haul.
Not letting her protest, for her safety and for the fact he was the one with turns of experience, he wrapped the riding straps around her, securing her so she couldn't fall hundreds of feet to the ground. It would have been hundred of feet too, because, as soon as he had her set, and settled in behind her, Kerath pushed himself off the ground. He snapped his wings open, catching air under them, and beat them down, forcing his long body higher and higher up into the sky. He hoped that Paralee would enjoy her first flight aboard a dragon, though he focused on the joyous task of soaring upward. Then W'al gave him the cue, a picture of the Dalibor bowl solidifying into both of their minds. They went between.
((We can wrap it here, or continue with him dropping her off and see about finding someone else to come and meet her.))
I'm short of breath, I'm sure, Gone, let it wash away the best I had, Gone, and when I disappear, Don't expect me back.
