Krysthanine stirred in her cot, slipping out of her bed and nudging Whiting from his light slumber. He gave a small croon, and crawled up her outstretched arm to her shoulders. She smiled and rubbed his eye ridges before setting out. She wore a pitch black tunic, with her usual white leggings. Her bare feet made not a noise, but she did manage to stumble and shuffle her feet halfway to the exit. Looking about warily, she skittered outside to avoid any suspicion.
Sighing, she climbed up the tree near the lake and let out another gusty sigh. The night always let her mind be clear and focus on future plans. Doesn’t Vhreth Rise soon? If so, I wonder how many eggs? she wondered, stroking her flitter and gazing about herself. What was she supposed to do, sleep?
She hadn’t realized anybody had been watching her while she snuck out of the Barracks. Even if somebody had, she didn’t mind; it wasn’t her responsibility if they got no sleep. She was a natural night bird, as was her entire family, and she didn’t suffer often from sleep depreciation. Though, these nightly strolls may be the things that are depreciating her social life. Though, there was enough of her to go around in the Weyr, so Krysthanine didn’t mind the solitude. It was good for her bonding with Whiting.

He finally dared to call out, his voice above a whisper and yet still weaker than he would have liked it to be. Quickly, he glanced back to look to the barracks, reassuring himself with the sight of it.[/ul]

Whiting was paying more attention than Krysthanine was (as always), and chirped in her ear to tell her that somebody was coming. Unfortunately, she was oblivious to any noise besides her own thoughts, which made her prone to jumping at a sudden noise. She was content with just looking at the stars and tracing constellations with her finger and absently scratching Whiting’s head. Time seemed to stop, and she relished the state of suspended animation gratefully. However, that didn’t last long, as a quiet gello cut through her fantasy like fire.
She jumped and squeaked at the same time, and sent her afternoon-blue flitter scrambling to latch onto a nearby branch, screeching in surprise. Clinging to her perch like her companion, she whipped her head from side to side, trying to pinpoint the source of the person in question. Her cool blue eyes fell upon the boy, boots undone, sleeping clothes slightly disheveled, and a face of pure innocence searching for something. She smiled, and crawled out as far as the branch could sustain her weight, and dropped to hang upside-down nearby. Whiting, seeing that His was paying attention to the person in which he was trying to get her to notice earlier, scrambled down to rest on her knees. Krysthanine held her palm towards him, and he gracefully hopped into it and jumped to a lower limb of the tree as the girl flipped to the ground. The firelizard then proceeded to leap onto her shoulder.
Krysthanine didn’t know the boy, and that was for sure. Was he a new Candidate? Probably, considering there’s no dragon or wher in sight. She let a broad grin stretch across her features, and held out a hand in greeting. ”Hello there! What’re you doing out in the middle of the night?” she asked. It was an honest question; normally, the only Weyrfolk out at night besides the Wher Handlers are her and her twin, Rethalt. Whatever chose this new boy to come out in the darkness was beyond her, and she was going to find out.

he replied a little uncertainly, it sounded awkward. He winced, still smiling, shrugging his shoulders up. "I can't sleep and I saw you leave the barracks, so I was curious." The explanation made it sound a lot more understandable, he figured. "So what're you doing out in the middle of the night?" He suddenly questioned, the lightbulb finally sparking that such an inquiry was better suited to be aimed towards her, his wondering sitting visible on his expression.[/ul]

As the boy calmed down, Krysthanine had to stifle a giggle at his panicked expression. Sure, that wasn’t the nicest thing in the world, but to her, the fact that he seemed afraid of her at first entertained her. Whiting leaped down from his perch onto her arm as they shook hands and scrambled onto Ezra’s shoulder, nervously sniffing his hair. Who was this new person that his Mine was talking to? Was he any danger? Oh, what if he didn’t like him? The blue firelizard chittered quietly into the boy’s ear, all the while wondering what was going on.
She let out a light chuckle at his reply to her question of choice. ”Well, I guess that’s enough of a reason. Still, you don’t know who or what is out,” she reminded him, remembering when Rethalt told her about what could have been a wild Wher at night. Oh, how I would kill to see that! she wished, gazing past Ezzy and into the shadows. She would just say it was a spirit, though, rather than what it probably was (which was a Wher), but her theory was as just as good of a guess as anybody’s.
Krysthanine gave a face of shock as Ezra repeated her question. Practically everybody at dalibor knew that she and her twin were notorious for their nighttime walks! Was this person new? Most likely, considering he didn’t know. ”I always walk around at night, both me and my brother. Everybody knows that!” she countered. ”Who are you, anyways?” This new person sure was weird.

He asked, breathless and amazed as he looked it over. He was familiar with firelizards, he'd seen plenty serving as pets to individuals back at home, but it was the first that he'd had the pleasure of seeing up closer. It was beautiful, a miniature replica of the dragons that had fascinated him right into coming to Dalibor Weyr, and it was so tiny. "Wow," he whispered, daring to reach a hand up to try to slide his fingertip along the ridges over its eye. He was so caught up that he didn't notice that he had yet to let go of her hand in that moment. He looked back to the girl as she spoke, his eyes widening a small bit as he was reminded of how strange this place was to him. He didn't know who or what was out here, he didn't know who or what she might have been. The memory of his feelings in response to his overactive imagination mere moments before was fresh in his mind and a shade of embarrassed pink began to fill up his cheeks as he ducked his head, returning his eyes briefly over to the firelizard. It helped him to smile a bit as he took a breath and looked back to her, "I know, but..." he offered a small shrug, careful to keep the gesture confined to one shoulder. "I wasn't really thinking, I guess, I was just really curious." Curiosity would get him into great trouble some day, his mother had always told him, but now was apparently not that time. Everybody knew about her nocturnal habits? Hers and her brother's? His brow creased a bit again, his lips pulling into a bit of a wince at the realization that he just wasn't a part of that because he didn't know. She must be someone popular if everyone knew, and he didn't even have the slightest idea who she was. Or her brother. It made him feel a little small - figuratively, in this case - but he managed to brighten up a touch again when she asked him who he was. He could get this cleared up. "I'm Ezra. Or Ezzy, I like Ezzy. He clarified with a small nod, pulling the corner of his lip back into a lopsided grin as he tilted his head a bit to the side, shrugging one shoulder again. "I'm new here. Like, I sort of just arrived yesterday."[/ul]

As Whiting became acquainted with Ezra’s ear, his keeper let a small chuckle escape her lips, and nodded to him. ”Yup! That’s Whiting. You can pet him, if you want. Just don’t make any sudden or jerky movements; he’s kinda jumpy,” Krysthanine introduced, letting her hand arm fall to her side. Her blue firelizard, hearing his name, perked his head up, giving a small questioning chirp. Krys giggled, leaning forward to stroke his head. He was just too cute! ”I was actually surprised when I Impressed him, actually. I was thinking that he’d go to somebody else, or stay with his mother’s Impresser, but-“ here she let out a content sigh, ”- Here he is, my beautiful blue baby.”
She sat down under the tree, offering a spot next to her for the boy. I wonder what he’s thinking. Probably ‘who’s this person, sneaking around at night?!?’ Woudn’t be surprised, she summarized in her head as he began to speak. She nodded. ”Yeah, that’s what happens. Either you fall asleep, without a doubt in your mind, or your starved curiosity drives yuou out of your cot, and the next thing you know you’re taking nightly walks and you’re talking to a new kid,” she replied, oblivious to the fact that she had just summarized the reason for her walks. Who would care to listen to that, anyways?
Krysthanine perked up as he told her his name. ”Ezra, eh? Or Ezzy? Hmm. I’ll call you Ezzy. Or, maybe Ez. Whaddya think of Ez?” she asked, then before he could reply, continued on. ”M’name’s Krysthanine.” She thought about her name for a minute, quietly sounding it out. Shrugging, she decided to offer her own pet name since he did. ”My brother, Rethalt, always calls me Krys, though. I don’t see why not, considering it shaves my name down to a more pronounceable term.”
Krys let out a small chuckle at her obliviousness to his newness. ”I guess I should be more courteous, considering I’ve never met you,” she apologized, rubbing the back of her head. ”I’m a Dragon Candidate, by the way. My brother’s a Wher Candidate. Maybe we should hold a get-together sometime?” she invited. She was planning on having this little guy meet her family, whether he wanted to or not.

He questioned abruptly, his eyes darting back to her. "You know, Impressing and all that. What happened, how did it go?" Looking back to Whiting, his imagination could only conclude that the experience would be similar to Impressing a dragon, a feat that he hoped to accomplish shortly, and he wanted as much insight on the event as he could get. Glancing between the firelizard and the spot on the ground offered to him, he moved slowly in turning around and lowering himself beside the girl, cautious to not disturb the little blue. Everything he did now was to accomodate the flitter clinging to him. Once she began describing the possible outcomes of a nightly walk fueled by curiosity being talking to a new kid, it clicked in his brain that she was describing her own tale. With a small crease in his brow, he looked back to her. "What were you curious about?"What did he think of Ez? His gaze drifted away for a moment in consideration, his mouth opening to perhaps tell her that he'd never really been called Ez before but probably wouldn't mind it at all; however, he didn't get that far before she was introducing herself, snapping his attentions back to focus on her face, as if needing to connect her features to the name given. Krysthanine, he worked to sound it out in his head and he shaped his lips around it without a noise. It was certainly a mouthful. "Well, do you like Krys?" She hadn't necessarily specified that the name her brother called her was one he enjoyed and Ezra certainly didn't want to attach himself to calling her something that she wasn't fond of, regardless of whether it was easier to say or not. She was a Dragon Candidate too! It thrilled him to hear, even while he could have probably figured it out if he'd put a little more thought into it. Her brother was a Wher Candidate though, prompting him to raise his eyebrows in wonder at the concept. Rethalt, her brother, would be Impressing a Wher of his own shortly. It was exciting, so many possibilities for everyone. His smile was hesitant at the invitation to be a part of a get-together with her and her brother, but he nibbled at his lip and looked ahead, going ahead to nod as he let his smile brighten into a grin. He liked meeting people, it'd be nice. "Sure, that'd be good." He accepted, looking back to her with a soft tilt to his head. "What's he like?"[/ul]
