Arratra studied the object that had arrived with his brother, Matren.
It was small, made mostly of a transparent red materiel that was smooth beneath the fingers, with silver markings and a clip of the same colour. Inside were strange boards; they appeared black but Arratra had discovered that they were, in fact, green.
Arratra had managed to figure out how to remove a panel in the back, and he had discovered that this was a space for an object to go; a small disk, considerably greater in diameter than thickness.
Flipping it over, he unscrewed the removable part and again examined the space, pulling out a small disk he had found in the back corridors of Fort during his stay there.
Careful examination of the disk had revealed a pair of crossed lines on one side, and a single line on the other.
Pressing the disk in straight-line first, he screwed the flap back on.
The object made a loud squeal, and he dropped it in surprise.
It landed face-up, and Arratra was astounded to notice that the flat green part had turned black.
Cautiously, Arratra picked it up and pressed one of the four buttons on the face of it.
It made the most curious of noises, and the part that had changed colour flashed at him for a moment before presenting him with an image.
He pressed the same button, and the image changed, from what looked like something in one of those old myths, into a fox that stood on two legs.
He pressed the opposite button and the picture changed back to the... thing.
Pressing the button again, he was presented with several images until he found the fox again.
This time he pressed the bottom button, and a small tune played from the object.
When it stopped, Arratra muttered, "What did I just do? What is this thing?"
He began experimenting again, until he understood how to work the thing; it rattled when shaken, and the fox walked, the sideways buttons brought up a selection, and then navigated through it. The bottom button selected things, unless you were not in the menu, and called up a bunch of numbers if you were looking at the fox. There was also a game, the objective of which was to hit the front of a strange object in the centre of the screen with a dot from the triangle that you controlled. The top button cancelled selections, but didn't do anything else.
He had no idea what the CONNECT and MEDICAL selections did yet, but he had an inkling that the stat called D-POWER was important.
He glanced at the sky, checking the position of the sun, then swore; he had chores to do!
Attaching the object to his belt, he took off at a run for the Candidates' barracks.
((This happens to be a D-power digivice toy; it was aboard the colony ship and was taken to Telgar as a family heirloom until it was lost. The battery Arratra found at Fort is just a more advanced, much longer life version of the watch battery.))
