"Wake up!"
A bluish mass to which the Candidate was speaking didn't move.
"Wake up, Chubbs!" The firelizard stirred when he heard his name, but he quickly fell back into a deep slumber.
"GET UP!" Pratyba yelled, scooping up the Blue and tossing him into the air. Chubbs made an odd squawking sound in protest and flapped his still-immature wings fruitlessly before landing back into the safety of Pratyba's palms. He glowered at Pratyba, obviously objecting to the rude awakening. Still, his glare softened after a few minutes, and he crooned: he didn't want his to get mad at him and cause unnecessary fuss.
"That's a good flitter!" Pratyba cooed to Chubbs, feeding him a tiny piece of meat. Chubbs snapped it up, gorging on the small morsel. He was still tiny, and easily fit in one of Pratyba's hands. He curled up in said hand, quite ready to go back to sleep now, but Pratyba jolted her hand, threatening to toss him into the air again, and he hastily sat up, sending His rapid images that told her that he was alert.
"You're a good boy," she murmured affectionately, rubbing his head with one fleshy finger. The firelizard rumbled, happy for the attention but unsure of her intentions. "But, today, I'm gonna train you to be a good firelizard! Does that sound good to you, hmm?" Chubbs withdrew from her hand, staring at her warily. He didn't understand her words, but he did see the pictures in her mind of him fetching things for her and behaving obediently. He growled in his soft, high-pitched firelizard voice, letting her know that that did not sound good to him. He wanted to take a snooze now, thank you very much, and he had been doing quite well with that desire before she had quite rudely thrown him into the air without warning him. His tail lashed twice to show his unwillingness to do as she'd said, but, beyond that, he did not respond.
Pratyba waited for a few seconds, knowing full well that Chubbs didn't have the ability to stay fussed for long. Her theory proved to be true as, not the length it took to go /between/ later, the Blue settled down, almost sitting on her palm, his tiny head rested against her thumb. He still wasn't happy about this 'training,' but he would at least give it a try. Being rebellious was just too much work! Pratyba laughed quietly, quite amused by his antics. He was nothing if not predictable, the flitteret was. He was not startled by the giggles that wracked her body anymore-- being with Pratyba meant that he'd got used to that within a few minutes after his Hatching and bonding.
"Okay, I really don't know how this works," Pratyba said, setting the firelizard down on her bed and putting her hands on her hips, chewing on her lower lip thoughtfully. She'd never had a firelizard before! Hmm, where was Flaet, or Okeris? They had firelizards, didn't they? Well, it probably wouldn't do to ask Okeris, she thought with a grin. Lira wasn't exactly the epitome of a well-trained flitter. But, it was likely that Flaet had had to do something to train Run and Ram, right? She continued to ponder. Who else had a firelizard? As she took her time thinking about exactly how to train a firelizard, Chubbs was quite enjoying the softness of her blanket, and was curling up, falling asleep immediately. It took Pratyba almost a minute to realize that the small presence of the flitter in her mind had sort of slowed down, almost like he had fallen asleep...
"Hey!" she yelled, smacking the cot next to where Chubbs lay, and, undoubtedly, giving him a nice jolt. The firelizard tried to leap up in the air, but he was hampered by the blankets in which he'd burrowed. The firelizard squirmed for a second before finally freeing himself, to Pratyba's great amusement. She picked him up in her hands again, and Chubbs, who was rather frightened of being thrown up in the air again while his wings were still so new, clung to her thumb, sinking his still-soft talons into her skin. "Ow, ow, Chubbs, easy! I won't throw you again-- promise!" The firelizard did not ease up with his clutches, and Pratyba remembered that they communicated through images, rather than words, and that firelizards had to be taught human words, rather than innately knowing them like dragons. She summoned up her mental powers and sent him a relaxing image of him sleeping in her palm. She didn't think she'd done it correctly, but it half-worked-- Chubbs relinquished his grip on her thumb, but he collapsed into her hand, nearing sleep again.
"Oh, Faranth!" Pratyba said, poking him awake for the upteenth time today. "Something is seriously wrong with you, or I'm the world's worst firelizard trainer." She paused. "Or both," she added as an afterthought. "If I can't even get you to stay awake for thirty seconds, how am I supposed to, you know, actually teach you how to bring things to me and take stuff to people?" Pratyba ran her hand through her hair, quite unsure what she was supposed to be doing, exactly. "Oh, well. I guess I'd better just admit I have no shelling clue what to do with you." She smiled at Chubbs, who opened one tiny eyelid to show her his softly whirling green eyes before falling asleep again. Pratyba couldn't help herself-- she held her hand close to her cheek and cuddled with the Blue for a moment. He was rather annoying, yes, but he was her flitter, and he was so shelling adorable that it was hard to stay mad at him. Besides, she rather enjoyed his constantly relaxed presence in her mind. He was calming, and that was definitely something Pratyba could use!
She walked out of the girls' barracks, still holding Chubbs protectively in her hand. "Hey, does anyone around here know how to train flitters? I'm having a bit of trouble!" she called, hoping that there was someone around that could help her because, by the first egg, she desperately needed some help.
