If the streetlight smashed above me, I wouldnt move an inch, Turn the glass into stars, And your face is the moon.
Two crecheworkers had taken the children down to the beach, one hawk-like bronze firelizard hovering between them and a few dancing about the children. Osro sat in the sand, scooping it together and making little hills before destroying them with a sweep of his grimy legs. He giggled and laughed the entire time, enjoying himself even though he wasn't actively playing with the others. He saw most of them every day. Sometimes he found it nice to be by himself. After about ten minutes of playing in the sand at the edge of the group, he grew bored and stood up, brushing himself off. He looked around himself, rubbing his hands on his dirty canvas shorts. It seemed like a good time to explore. Maybe they would catch him, but that didn't matter very much. He turned down the beach and began to trundle along it, kicking at shells and pebbles on the sand as he went.
The young boy got as far as the end of the cove that acted as the Weyr's harbor before bronze Afzal noticed that his charge was gone. The flitter came zipping over as Osro scrambled cheerfully over the rocks to the other side. Afzal almost reached it, but he was greeted by a chorus of screeching browns and purples, trying to ward him off. He screamed in surprised and then hissed at them, spreading his wings wide to bluff them away. Ignoring the squabbling flitters, Osro descended onto the beach. Afzal was being very, very silly. Whyever was he being so silly? That question went unanswered in the young boy's mind, because the boy found himself face to face with a fair of greens and a gold, the firelizards staring down at him and hissing. Afzal ducked down, rushing to the youngster's defense. It was then that they noticed the eggs. The gold screeched.
A second gold answered the Queen's challenge. The message passed as fast as thought, Eulo was there. Bronze Ruy, white Olya, green Ife, and blue Jary followed her. P'nay's bronze Capella and brown Junior appeared as well. Purple Brink of F'lan joined them as well. Eulo wasn't about to take any competition from some wild gold, so she pulled out all the stops, summoning all that would listen, ignoring the two coppers who also lived in the Weyr. In the air, the two fairs shrieked and postured at each other. Wondering what was going on, Osro stared up at them, mouth agape. Then he looked back at the eggs, twenty-five mottled bundles half buried in the sand above the tide mark. On the other side of the beach, the crecheworkers were calling for him, but he didn't hear. The golds and their followers continued their battle, but in the end, Eulo won the war.
The wilds disappeared, the bonded but untamed gold basked in her success, and it was then that Osro heard the workers. Oh, they'd probably like to see the eggs too! He loved babies! Even if his little sister was really noisy, he loved her and he loved things like her. He thought flitters were better than her though. Flitters played with him; she did no such thing. Scrambling back up onto the rocks, he waved at them. "Come see wha' I found!" That, of course, sent the other children into a tizzy. Everyone came over. The workers came to see too, though they tried to get the kids to stay back. They found Osro crouched down next to the eggs, flitters ranging all around them. One of the workers sighed. However, the other, a woman already aging in her thirties but happy for it, smiled. "We have to be really careful, but if you can each pick up one, we can take them back."
The other crecheworker gathered up her skirt and carefully placed a collection of eggs in it while the smiling worker helped an eager Osro and the others each carefully take an egg and cradle it against their bodies as they picked their way over the rocks. The older children, the ones who were seven or eight, helped out and slowly, a train of flitters accompanying them, they managed to make it back across the beach. They climbed the path up into the bowl and then the workers, the smiling one at the front and the one with a skirt full of eggs at the back, guided them towards the kitchens. Not a single egg was cracked in the process, mainly because there was a green, a pink, or Eulo there to help any kid that seemed to be stumbling or in need of aid. Flitter eggs were wonderful motivation for children. In the dining hall, Osro proudly deposited his prize near the fire as a small crowd gathered from those in the hall.
The crecheworkers tried to maintain order, but a chain reaction began immediately. Talk of firelizards and excitement buzzed in the air and the children scattered, racing off to find parents, siblings, and friends. Everyone needed to see! Everyone needed an egg! Osro raced off with the others. Fahra and Eriputh were relaxing between afternoon lessons and he found them with some help from Afzal. Grabbing Fahra's hand, he tried to tug his injured aunt towards the dining hall, but she scooped him up instead and deposited him on Eriputh's back. The green, curious about all this excitement and why she wasn't involved, carried them both towards the kitchens. The crecheworkers, having taken charge, had set up some sort of order under the head cook, a grouchy harper named Paget, and the acting headwoman, so they settled in the gathered crowd.
There are so many ways, To lose your attention, You can break everything, But so I can take anything.

Truly, Jerrith should have known better. He had his hands full with one young fire-lizard that couldn't understand the notion of property, and was just lucky it hadn't got him mauled by an angry wher or something. What on Pern would he do with another?
And yet... that was exactly why the news of a clutch up for grabs was so tempting. Maybe another flitter could keep thieving little Magpie from getting bored and wandering off? Maybe with that bit of company, both could be kept to safer amusements when Jerrith was busy with kitchen work or something else that wasn't suitable to keep fire-lizards around, where one was prone to causing trouble?
If there were more people who wanted eggs than there were eggs, it'd stand to reason that he ought to bow out. After all, he already had one fire-lizard, and was having difficulty keeping it out of trouble as it was. But if he could... maybe, just maybe, it'd make life a bit easier.
And even if that wasn't the case... in those times when Magpie wasn't actually making his life difficult, Jerrith had to admit that he adored the little black thing. He had plenty of affection to spare for another, he was sure of it!
So he steeled himself against the stifling crowd that was sure to come, and made his way to where the clutch was being held. If it got too busy, painfully so, he could always bow out gracefully, leaving less competition for any other candidates who might want a chance; but in the meantime, he'd tough it out. It'd be worth it, if he wound up with an egg.
And at least he already knew how to tend to it. He didn't need to worry quite so much on that score as the first time around.

Kestrel was wandering down the corridor to the dining hall when she heard excited children running around whispering the word "flitter" to eachother over and over again. When she reached the hall she immediately looked around and saw people gathering near the fireplace.
Her heart started pounding. There were fire lizard eggs over there. Eulo's hatching flashed before her eyes and her cheeks grew hot with embarrassment at her previous failure. But summoning her courage and banishing ill thoughts she forced herself to believe that this time would be different. She was here, at this weyr, for a reason. She had been chosen to come here so she should start acting like it!
Squaring her shoulders and lifting her head high she headed over to the group. To any onlookers she probably looked a little too melodramatic considering the circumstances, but Kestrel now more tahn ever needed to believe she would succeed this time.

The general feeling of excitement was what got Hati worked up to begin with, and soon enough she was attracted to the growing crowd to see just what in the world was going on. Eggs! There were eggs! They were so big, too, she could eat one of them and be full all day! She perched on a doorframe, eyes whirling with excitement, and immediately called to Hers, demanding that Hers come to her side and acquire one or two of these delicious eggs for her pleasure.
Valha was startled out of a light afternoon nap in the sun by the demand that Hati sent her. Eggs? she blearily sent back to the green flitt. She could feel her pet's exasperation at her lack of understanding, and so a few seconds later she was blasted with the mental image of twenty five large eggs, surrounded by an ever-growing crowd of people. Eggs which she recognized right away as flitt eggs.
She was on her feet in an instant, Not food, Hati! Those are not for eating! She stumbled to her feet and took off towards the Dining Hall, slipping through the gathering crowd, trying to get to Hati before the flitt, indignant that she wasn't going to get to eat one of those marvelous eggs, caused a scene. She was just in time, able to snatch Hati right out of the air as she swooped towards the fireplace.
Find Nara, Hati. Bring Nara here! she commanded the little green as sternly as she could, looking the flitt in the eyes and sending her pet a mental picture of her roommate as she did so. When she was sure that the green got the idea, she let her go, and Hati immediately blinked between.
Valha could only hope that Hati would do what she asked. Nara needed to be here if she wanted a chance at a fire lizard!

Nara was straightening up her part of the room she shared with Valha when Hati appeared, chittering and screeching loudly. The flitter landed on her head and grabbed her hair, trying to get Nara's attention.
"Ow! Hati! Ow. Stop that, that hurts!" she said, frowning. She blinked as the flitter sent her images of eggs and Valha before tugging at her hair again. The images only confused Nara, but the insistent tugging on her hair and Hati's swooping got her moving. "Alright! I'm going," she said. The little flitter herded her into the kitchen, then perched on Valha's shoulder. Nara quietly filtered up through the crowd, reaching out to grasp Valha's arm as she finally found her roommate.
"What is going on?" she asked. "Oh! That is what Hati was going on about, okay. Flitt eggs. Did you send Hati? Oh of course she did, Nara, why else would Hati bring you here. Do you think I might have one?" Nara seemed excited by the prospect of flitt eggs, pressing a hand to her lips.

Corian was scrubbing away at the walls of the Candidate's barracks. Some smart individual had decided to leave food lying about. He hadn't really thought food was permitted in the Candidate Barracks. He'd always thought that it had to be elsewhere. He scrubbed away at a stain on the floor not wanting to be blamed for the area being untidy. Especially if, for once, it wasn't his own mess. He scrubbed away, having few better things to do with his time as most other candidates were in other parts of the Weyr finishing their chores. Corian had finished his somewhat early and had returned to find the Common Area less than liveable. He stood up and examined his work so far... It was decent enough he supposed. He stood with his hands on his hips for a moment longer and then wandered out into one of the corridors. Chaos seemed to have thrown itself into the Weyr with younger Weyrbrats running about here there and everywhere. Corian stared blankly as his younger sister ran up to him, grinning from ear to ear. Arianna was training to be a Harper but apparently she'd heard that there were firelizards in the Dining Hall and figured he needed to know.
Corian immediately sprung to action grinning at he little sister as the two of them bolted towards the Dining Hall excitement just about emanating from their ears. They burst into the hall and looked about seeing a great number of people standing about but it was not this that caught Corian's eye. No. It was the twenty odd eggs sitting in a pile on one of the tables. Corian couldn't help but feel a thrill run through him much the same as when he was standing on the sands waiting for his dragon to finally emerge. At least if he had a firelizard he might be able to use it to assist in his chores or something. Perhaps he could start up that band with Ezekiel. He almost jumped a little at the thought of starting a Firelizard band with his friend. Oh! Ezekiel!! He had to know that there were firelizards! But Corian didn't know where the younger candidate was at that moment and with the crowd pressing in he wasn't sure he could get out just now. He was being pushed away from his sister and closer to the eggs having stopped right in the doorway. Maybe Ez would come later... If not, perhaps Corian would get a green and be able to give an egg to his roommate.
He was almost at the front, standing beside a girl with a green who disappeared in an instant, obviously betweening somewhere. The sight of a green made him even more thrilled to have been told about the hatching. Perhaps he would get a flitt himself and be able to talk to the creature. Then, when he impressed his dragon, the three of them could be some sort of amazing band of noble thieves. The thought of the time with Magic Caster, The Flirtatious Steed and Protector of the Skies crossed his mind briefly...
--- --- --- ---
Kire was all but asleep, lying on her bed, face down and hugging the little doll her sister had created. Her eyes were heavy and slowly starting to close. She had tried to stay awake for as long as possible the previous night and it was beginning to catch up to her. Despite being a candidate for a Wher she still found it somewhat difficult to get everything done. She knew that she would have to get used to becoming nocturnal but she also needed to do her chores every now and then and these, unfortunately, fell during the day for the most part. It just so happened that there were more things that needed doing throughout the day than at night.
She frowned as she heard something outside and got to her feet. It sounded like shouting. Were there more attacks? The Sweetrolls had gone missing? Or, and the thought caused her heart to skip a beat, someone had stolen the sweet Benden Baklava that they were going to be having for dessert that night. She jumped to her feet and ran into the corridor to a great number of people running about the whole area. A boy ran past with a younger girl shouting something about firelizards. Kire stared for a moment and heard the word repeated. There were some eggs somewhere? How could that be? Someone must be playing a trick. Still, now that she was awake and hungry she decided to go to the Dining Hall.
She wandered along, following a whole group of people. Everyone was clearly rather hungry if they were all heading in the direction of the Dining Hall. She frowned as she walked into the room and stared blankly at a pile of large eggs in the middle of the room. She came to the conclusion that the eggs were not for eating but were, indeed, firelizard eggs. She just might be able to get her very own firelizard if she was really lucky. She surreptitiously made her way forward, moving into gaps that appeared when some people left and was eventually standing behind the boy she had seen in the corridor and another girl. She was so excited but the eggs didn't look close to hatching. Perhaps they would have to wait for a while before they would be ready...

Kidanyr had been excited with all the others. At first, she didn't know what she was excited about, and just ran around in circles. Something was happening! Every one was happy and excited, so she should be happy and excited too. Holding out her arms, she ran across the sand with the others. She hadn't been allowed to carry an egg, the toddler to apt to stumble or drop the egg. But she marched with the others, head held high. Even though Orso found them, she liked to pretend she had too. Mommy would be proud! She would have to tell her.
The moment she had been allowed to, she went to find her mother, which was easy as Lyr was coming to visit after chores. A bit wearily, she wandered through the halls, Satin around her neck as usual. The young copper seemed to have taken to that spot, and was rarely seen anywhere else if she was awake. Hers was hers. Although she sometimes left to check up on Smallthing. Smallthing was Hers', but the Copper still was a bit foggy on the relationship. Kidanyr, noticing her mother, ran up to her and grabbed her hand. Lyr smiled, but was caught off guard as she was pulled along, her little girl blathering about 'Itts Itts' what ever they were. It wasn't until she kept hearing the word 'Flitter' over and over that it finally clicked. The children had found Flit eggs. Well, it wouldn't hurt for them to see. Lyr was sure that the Copper would find it interesting, to say the least. Maybe, just maybe, she could get the copper a friend. Someone to snuggle with at night. Several time Satin had wormed herself into Lyr's furs, almost getting squished in the woman's natural sleep movements.
The copper had actually heard of the eggs just moment before they actually reached them. Claws flexed in slight anger. Why hadn't she been invited? She could help! She was a queen! She fumed a bit, but feeling her flitter's annoyance, Lyr soothed her with a soft hum. She had learned quickly that a bit of music tended to distract the copper from foul moods.
–
Tasia wipes a bit of sweat from her brow, sighing heavily. Sometimes chores were just no fun. But then again, work had no business being fun. Then it wasn't work. It was fun. She plodded through the halls, intent on taking a batch with chatter reached her ears. Pausing, the slightly gaunt woman leaned a bit closer to ease-drop. Flitter eggs had been found by the brats? She was a bit surprised. Tasia wasn't fond of children. They broke things. But somehow, they had managed to get all the eggs back up intact.
Well... Perhaps the woman would just sneak a peek. Flitters seemed a bit bothersome, but deep down, she wanted one. She liked to watch them, little dragon cousins in flight, chittering and chattering at one another. Not that she would tell any one. But perhaps she could get her hands on one. Someone to talk to, even if it couldn't really talk back. That sounded nice.
So she joined the crowd, slipping through cracks in the crow to get a half-decent view of them. How interesting. She looked to see a few other candidates. Were they hoping to get one too?

Larka was taking a nap in the candidate barracks when Tris suddenly popped up overhead. The young girl opened an eye and mumbled a brief greeting before closing it again. Tris of course wouldn't have any of this. Chattering angrily, the black firelizard pulled on some of Larka's hair. Sighing, the candidate finally got up. Tris' eyes were rolling a swift mixture of blues and greens. Something was up. "Okay Tris, you have me. Now what?" She asked the over excited lizard, a bit of tired frustration evident in her voice.
A barrage of images entered Larka's mind then. Eggs! Eggs that were found and tons of new candidates for them. "Do you really want a friend that badly Tris?" Larka's voice held a hopeful tone. Sure I had the black, a going away present from her parents, but I love firelizards and in the case that I don't impress....NO! I can't think of that now. Larka looked back up to see Tris swerving in the air, the light making his black hide dance with dark violet highlights. Yes, he wanted a playmate! Yes. He’d be fine to share His with another. Someone to play with, someone to go on adventures with, he wanted her or him! Giving another tired sigh Larka got up. "Alright you, show me where."
Tris took off flying through the open door with Larka on his tail. Through corridors, around buildings to the outside they went. Larka stopped a moment and squinted in the bright sunlight. Her impatient firelizard raced back to His and pulled on the sleeve of her shirt. Nodding her head, Larka started off again. Soon they were at the crowd of people. There are a lot here. The candidate thought a bit taken a back. Larka shook herself mentally, I can't think like that. If I'm nervous at a lizard hatching, what would the dragons think of me at their hatching.
Tris finally stopped zooming around the group and lighted down onto His' shoulders. Wrapping his tail around her neck, he glanced around at the other people. His was not alone here, but no matter His was a good owner. Surely one of the flits would be impressed with His. The black crooned as he watched the eggs.

Jaghatai sat at the table, enjoying the overall emptiness of the dining hall, save for a few scattered people, and a light meal, when the room got raided by a chattering crowd of crecheworkers and children. Great. Nothing like a nice meal with noisy, dirt caked kids running around! But he appeared to be outnumbered and so decided to admit defeat. Confused and annoyed at the interruption he gathered plate and cup to search for a quieter place, then hesistated for a moment - something about everyone's behaviour seemed off. Excitedly they gathered around the fire - it was on the other side of the room, so he couldn't exactly make out what they were doing - and then the children began running off in all directions, giggling and chattering and repeating one word over an over again: fire lizards! His heart made a leap. They had found fire lizard eggs!
Maybe he could snatch one without anyone noticing? After all, fire lizards were easy to impress if you had enough food at hand. There was no way he'd be left standing... er, lose his flitter if he would just get hold of one of those eggs! He wasn't the only one to stand up and gather around the fire, trying to catch a view of the eggs. Although he would've never openly admitted it, he adored the quirky little creatures, something about them made his heart feel lighter. More and more people poured in from outside, drawn in by the prospect of snatching an egg that the eager children had been spreading, while Jaghatai was still pondering what to do. He didn't want to risk what he had here, but there was no chance he'd get an egg, was there? Shells, why hadn't he been the one to find those eggs? He definitely needed to get out more.

H'cup had the good fortune to be in the dining hall when the children and crecheworkers entered with their burden. Tuthleth was safely asleep on their ledge, so there was no one to scold him as he drreew close to the fire, craning his neck to get a good look at the eggs. It looked like it was a fair-sized clutch, over twenty eggs. Maybe he coud get one…? Tuthleth probably wouldn't approve, but he wouldn't know until the egg was already safe in H'cup's possession… And surely he'd get used to the idea. He and the flitter might even be friends. And having a dragon would certainly help with controlling it, so that their flitter wouldn't be flying off everywhere and stealing things. And thinking of that incident, H'cup thought he saw the candidate the thieving flit had looked to in the crowd.
And what a crowd it was becoming. Weyrfolk, candidates, riders of every degree. Some of those watching already had fire-lizards perched on their shoulder, while others just had looks of longing—and some had both a flitter and the look. H'cup maneuvered himself further to the front of the crowd, slipping as neatly as he could between people. Yes, he decided, he'd try to get an egg for himself. If he didn't receive one, it was no big deal, but if he did, maybe he'd get a mini-Tuthleth, or sweet little pink. Or anything, really, he wasn't picky. Just something.

"And that's why you really ought to take care of yourself, E'rin!"
The boy wrinkled his nose at the healer. She'd just went on this huge rant about how scraping his knees, elbows, palms, cheeks, ankles, et cetera, just wasn't good for his health and that he was a dragonrider now who should take care of himself! F'lan probably didn't like seeing him put so many holes in his clothes, either, but E'rin could just get a nice weaver to fix it, or fix it himself - he's seen people sew so much that he could probably sew, too. She also quickly added that, well, she could still fix all the bumps and scrapes all the time, but one day he'd grow up and wouldn't heal as fast (she said this was some kind of proven fact? that didn't make sense) and so he should be more careful from now on. She was walking with him, too, across the weyrbowl.
"Yeah, but, Miss Cleo, I'm still a kid," E'rin said. "I'll worry 'bout it when I'm not anymore!"
Cleo chuckled. "Oh, alright, fiiine. Maybe I should just give you your own stash of bandages!"
Hey, E'rinLoveHurt! That sounds like a GREAAAAATTTT AWESOMEIDEA! Jarith piped up, bouncing along beside Hers. She hadn't liked that Hers got scratched up so much, but that was alright because he didn't really mind so she didn't have to worry. She could be happy instead! Hers was silly, though. He only got hurt from falling down! Silly HersE'rinMineLove, he knew he couldn't run as fast as her or Rats!
"Jarith says it's a good idea," E'rin said. There was a pause, and then, "Wait, why are you still following me?" He furrowed his brow, a little concerned.
"I thought we were having a good conversation!" Cleo laughed. She smiled. "I'm going for a walk, too, you know. I've been cramped up in my chair for sooooo long!" She stretched her arms out and walked funny - presumably stretching her legs, too. E'rin gave her a weird look. "Plus, you're a cool kid." She fake-punched the whiterider's shoulder. "And I see you all. the. time. So I figure I can see you outside the infirmary, too!"
"Oh," said E'rin, and then multiple things happened at once.
He heard Rats barking (he knew it was Rats because it sort of sounded like an old man) and then saw the dog chasing his new flitter. He remembered that he should check on Mitzi and Merps in the lake, soon-ish, as Jarith squealed and squawked and ran with delight towards the dog to play, too. A really loud whistling sound came from right beside him, and he looked up at Cleo. Her green flit had landed on her shoulder.
"Hi, Pond!" Cleo chirped, grabbing the green flit and scratching her all over in a way that was affectionately rough. Pond loved it. "What's up?" The little green pried herself out of Cleo's hands and slithered back to her shoulder, excitedly nodding to a group of people disappearing into the kitchens. She'd flown over and seen what it was, and it was exciting! She whistled again and showed Cleo a picture of people holding eggs. Whistle!
"Oh! Eggs!" Cleo lit up like Rukbat. "E'rin, they found flitter eggs! C'mon, kid, let's go!" The healer jogged off, way more excited than E'rin was at first. He told Jarith and Rats to stay out here, and then when that was taken care of, the excitement set in. Maybe he'd get another flitter! Wow! And he ran, too. The healer-and-weyrling pair found themselves, excitedly, amongst the crowd, peeking between people to get a view of the eggs. There sure were a lot! [/blockquote]

Kareem had been sitting at the far end of the Weyr Bowl when she saw a crowd begin to form. Her curiosity piqued, she bundled what she was working on into her bag and headed towards it. Something had to be up with all those people gathering. She hoped it wasn’t because of some accident. The thought of someone being hurt turned her stomach. She hated seeing people in pain.
But as she drew closer, she could hear what was going on. Eggs! Flitter eggs! Her heart leapt into her throat. She had wanted a flitter for as long as she had been in the Weyr. There was something about them that she loved. They made her happy, which was no small feat when she had arrived at the Weyr. And here was a chance to get one of her own! Excitement danced in her chest. She desperately wanted her own flitter.
She pushed through the crowd, trying to get near them. She muttered under her breath. Being so slight, moving through the crowd was difficult. She just didn’t have the muscle to push past everyone crowded around the eggs. At the very least, she wanted to see the eggs!

Word spread through the weyr like wildfire, so it was only a matter of time before D'ix caught wind of it.
He should have learned from his past Impressions, but the Cyanrider was up for one last try. His dragon was annoying beyond all belief and his current flitter would bow down to anyone. D'ix wanted something with a level head for a change. Something that wasn't insane. After his past encounters with people unfortunate enough to be in his way, he couldn't help but notice how freely their flitters attacked him and how quickly Wormtail fled for cover. Ressouth would threaten to eat the little scoundrels, but in reality she would have had a tough time catching one, even if she was a lithe Cyan with decent reflexes. She was still several times larger than a Gold firelizard and therefore far too slow to snap up anything smaller. Besides, she was all mouth. Ressouth hadn't caused any harm to anything that wasn't prey.
Crowds always brought out the very worst in him. D'ix was actively shoving others out of his path if they weren't moving fast enough, eager to get a prime placement near the front of the line. This time, he shamelessly hoped to get a hold of something with some rank. Even a spineless spaz like Wormtail would have garnered an iota of respect if he was a Bronze instead of a Black. But then again, he wasn't sure. He remembered that ghastly Gold Ressouth couldn't stop bad-mouthing and if he had to deal with the same, he would have killed Couineth seconds after Impression. It was a wonder he hadn't killed Ressouth yet. Maybe because it hurt. Every time he gave the Cyan a punch on the shoulder, his shoulder would ache a little. What was this--a shared body and a shared mind? D'ix never stopped regretting his dragon's decision. These days if he were told it was either this or be left standing, he would have taken his chances with whers instead and likely Impress to something of a sound mind.
I can't belieeeeve this. This gathering would suffocate Faranth herself. Tell them to move, Mine! Show those dumn, gawking wherries a thing or two!
The boy rolled his eyes and pushed through another layer of people to finally get a glimpse of the eggs. There were already people close by! Chosen perhaps! D'ix wasn't going to settle for empty-handed failure. Though he was called after by many frustrated residents when he butt past them, none of them dared to try and stop him. Many of them were well acquainted with his foul temper.
Wormtail, the-soon-to-be-uncle if D'ix ever Impressed, was sent to bring meat in case there wasn't going to be any and the eggs started hatching. The Black was stealthy, keeping to the shadows that he blended so well into. He was able to steal some fresh and juicy chunks from the kitchens before he whisked away towards the bowl. He carefully avoided any other lifeforms, wide-eyed and fearful of being admonished for taking too long or returning too quickly. He wasn't tempted to so much as lick the offering he was sent to retrieve. When the flitter arrived he had a very tough time seeking out his right away, but his eyes finally settled on that disgruntled young man below and he spiraled down to meet him there.
Giving the flitter a mean glance as he was nearly within reach of the inner crowd, D'ix sent Wormtail away with a scowl. "Not yet! Come back when I tell you to!" The Black turned and winked away immediately. What a wretched time to bring food, when there was no guarantee that he'd be given a chance to attend the hatching! He knew they would try to kick him out if there were enough complaints. It wasn't his fault that crowds made him so anxious. D'ix reached his destination, earning a few glowers from those around him. He had obviously cut in front of many people. The Cyanrider simply gave them all an equally ugly stare as if daring anyone to step up to him. He was already in a foul mood. His rationality was far-gone.

H’to was being lazy after the hatching, then again…He had been lazy since the hatching of the fire lizards. He was slightly depressed that he hadn’t gotten another fun critter, but that didn’t mean too much. So, he sat in the hall, looking around with a blank look. That was when the crowd came in. Dia’ whom was asleep on his shoulders, shot her head up to look at the crowd, then leapt into the air to investigate the eggs. Small visions of the eggs bounced into H’to’s mind as the green flitter danced over the crowded eggs, yelling in excitement. H’to’s face began to brighten. More eggs! There were more eggs! There was still a chance to get a third friend for his gang. Maybe a male? Or maybe another soft pink? OH! Maybe another green like Dia! Oh the thought of all the possibilities made H’to stand up quickly and stride over to the group with the wide eyed Amour in his arms. She was crooning softly as she grabbed sight of the eggs, but she didn’t want to be involved, so the soft pink flitter took flight and betweened back to the bed furs of Hers. Dia still flew over the eggs, yelling happily. ”Hmm. What a pretty bunch of flit eggs!” H’to crooned happily as his eyes seemed to glitter at the sight of the little treasure chests. He looked at each one, looking at how pretty they were, and the colors of each shell. ”What are the chances of me getting one of them?” He asked, more to himself than anyone as he kept looking at them. He felt greedy, but he didn’t care. He wanted another! Dia seemed to agree with him, and tried to get down to them. She enjoyed laying with Amour when she was nothing but an egg, but she just couldn’t get to the eggs! Now angry, Dia darted back to Hers, hissing. H’to pet the pissy green. ”Easy, Dia. Maybe soon, darling, maybe soon,” He whispered to the red eyed green flit. She hissed still as she looked at the eggs, hungrly.

Larka couldn't believe how many people were coming to see the eggs hatch. Tris watched the others carefully, interest and curiosity swirling in his eyes. Was there someone to play with here? The black firelizard took to the air and winged around the room looking for a playmate. His sighed as she watched the over-excited lizard dance around and in between the candidates.
Already getting nervous, Larka was absentmindedly taking pieces of her hair and twisting them around her fingers. Twist and pull, twist and pull, it was a hypnotic movement. Oh shards, why does there have to be so many people here? Sighing, Larka pushed her way back to the front so that Tris wouldn't get in too much trouble. She'd have to keep her eye on the black...bad things were bound to happen if he got too bored and found a new partner in crime. ____________________________________ Ara had just gotten in from a flight when she saw people running around in a frenzy. AraMine what is happening? Avirith crooned curiosity evident in her mind voice. The green dragon watched as firelizards danced in the air. Why can't I be smaller Mine? If I was I could dance with them. The dragon specifically watched a black male that was flitting from one person to another in a frenzied excitement.
"I don't know Avi. Let's go ask." The green dragon nodded to her rider and flew up to a ledge where she could watch the event play out. Settling down daintily Avirith folded in her dark wings and fixed her gaze on the black firelizard again. Hello. She warbled as he came closer. Tris. Was the chattered answer. The male sat on Avirith's shoulder, happy to have found a friend.
Ara smiled at the two new found friends. See Avirith, having a firelizard would be fun. Avirith crooned a happy yes and went back to watching the candidates. Looking around, her rider tried to find someone familiar. The person came in the form of H'to. "H'to!" Ara called out to the blue rider. "What's going on?"

Darcy had been lucky enough to be sitting in the dining hall when the crecheworkers and their fragile cargo had arrived. It had made quite the scene to watch, especially with the young children milling around their minders with such excitement that it brought on a headache. Grumbling about the loudness of children the candidate continued her observation of the scene, keen eyes watching as the crecheworkers started pulling objects out of their aprons, objects that looked suspiciously like eggs! Her view of the items however was frequently hidden by the milling mass of children as they jostled around the hearth, and then by other weyr residents as they moved from their tables to investigate the commotion. There where now so many people being held back from the hearth that it was simply impossible to ignore the crowd, plus there was the added irritation of little children running around and shouting about firelizard eggs.
Taking a hold of the food she had been eating the candidate pushed out her chair, got to her feet, and walked toward the crowd in one smooth motion. Every so often Darcy found that she had to shoulder someone out of the way, but eventually she was able to slip through the crowds and get a better look of what was going on beyond the bodies of the crecheworkers. Lo-and-behold within the hearth sat a good number of flitter eggs, and suddenly all her anger and annoyance was forgotten. Who could remain angry with the possibility of getting a firelizard? Even she as grouchy as they came was smiling blissfully as she looked down at the eggs like a mother might examine her child! Oh yes she certainly planned to come away from this with a firelizard – it would sure as heck make up for all the racket that had ruined her meal!.
Of course she was still in the group of people being held back from the eggs, and she wondered just how many people would be allowed closer to the eggs and when.

Glancing around Kestrel could feel the familiar tendrils of cold fear creeping around her. There were a lot of people here now. A lot. Because she had been so early on the scene, right when the children had settled before the fire, she had managed to squeeze in near the front. However, due to much jostling she hadn' seen the actual eggs yet.
A little bit conflicted she wasn't sure whether she should push forward or step back. Instinct was screaming at her to run no when she had the chance, but her new conviction held her in place. Besides, she was a little curious about these eggs. There had been no mention of whether they were ready to hatch now or not. If they were she realized with a jolt that she hadn't brought any food with her! But seemingly not many other people had thought that far ahead. That relaxed her a bit. She wasn't the only one who had no idea what was going on here at least.
But if the eggs weren't going to hatch now, how would they decide who got one? Would there be a test? Or would Riders get first pick? If they were going to go by rank then Candidates were definitely going to be at the bottom of the list.. Fidgeting with her sleeve she kept looking around, hoping someone would do something that would indicate what was going o happen next.

It had taken actually a bit longer for the word to make it's way down the grapevine to Wes that there was something new in the Weyr. It wasn't that he was hard to find, but more that he just hadn't made any friends that would have passed the word to him. In the Candidate Barracks, he looked up from what he was fiddling with to notice the strange silence. Walking towards the doorway, he looked out. Where was everyone? It wasn't like it to be... this empty. Enough time had passed that some of the other candidates were coming back, and he could hear them both chattering away excitedly about eggs. Light blue eyes went very big, as he strained his ears to follow the conversation.
Flit eggs!
Waiting to hear to location, he started a quick walk towards them, already the possibilities racing in his mind. He could get a flit! Why not? If he was there earlier enough, and was able to claim an egg, if he had enough food the flit would become his. He couldn't be passed over for it, not like other things. He'd finally have some companionship.
How long had it been since he had gotten here? He couldn't remember, the days all seemed to blend together, wake up, do his chores, eat food, wish for dragon eggs, and spend his time alone. It wasn't like other times at Weyrs, when his parents had arrived with him and stayed there, entertaining the masses (and trying to get him to join in the singing, or at least instrument playing). Having such an astringent personality, he had still not had the opportunity to really make friends. It was getting to the point that the young man was ready to admit that he was lonely, if just so someone would pay attention to him... just for a little bit.
Wes never thought he'd be the kind of person who would eventually need other people to talk to. You don't notice those things until they're gone. Now though... he had pretty much alienated himself from more than his fair share of fellow candidates... but if he got a flit, maybe that could be a way back in. He wouldn't have to talk about himself, he could talk about his flit, that would be easy.
Stepping into the room, the first thing he noticed was the mess of people, that was daunting in itself, and he almost balked from it. The second thing was that he couldn't exactly see where the eggs were, it was warm, but with all the people, the warmth was now coming from all different directions. Taking a breath, he decided that it'd be best to attack the thickest knit of people, and using his bigger arm (now stronger due to work in the stables), he was able to cut a path. Though eventually it got too tight knit for him to squeeze through. Urgh, he was trapped on all sides now... thank the firestone he wasn't claustrophobic.

Somebody bumped into her, no they pushed into her! Kestrel, who had been busy psyching herself up to claim a flitter egg or impress a hatchling was highly irritated when a young man started trying to shove people out of the way. Just because he'd been late didn't mean he had the right to force his way through. If he was meant for a fire lizard he would get one! She had been so nervous that all her fear was suddenly turned into anger and this poor boy would be the recipient. Turning to face him she coughed, "Excuse me, but perhaps you had better be a little less rude if you expect to leave with an egg today", she stated, eyes flashing. Kestrel knew she had no authority here, but if he was a candidate like her, and she thought he might be, then it didn't matter. He was around her own height which helped her feeling of defiance in the middle of such a packed crowd. At least she didn't have to look up to give out. His long brownish hair looked a little oily and he had a sight smirk hovering around his features. She thought perhaps she had seen him someplace before? During chores maybe.. A name floated just out of reach, Ches? Brenlin? Weslin?? She wasn't sure.
Kestrel wasn't the type to be intimidated by other people, she was too proud for that. Dragons, yes, but not people. She glared at him, waiting for a response. This was an important moment for her, she was hoping to find herself a companion flit so she wouldn't feel so lost her, and she certainly wasn't going to let this young man take her chance away.

You've got me caught in a place, Panic for a minute, Got my brain in a daze, I wish you weren't in it.
When a giant crowd had amassed in the hall, the smiling crecheworker spoke from the calm that was the eye of the storm, the hearth warm against her back. "You'll all need to come forward and state you rank and name if you want an egg. Riders and those with position get first pick." The worker phrased it politely, avoiding the fact that the Weyrwoman could take any egg she wished and give it away as a political favor. She had faith in Fajra, of course, and with Osro as the finder of the eggs, she had a little more faith than usual. "Weyrbrats can have them after that, then candidates, wher and then dragon, and finally werylings. You all have other responsibilities that come first, but don't we all?" She was the smiling force amongst the sterner faced women that now controlled the eggs. However, one of them was about to assert her authority.
"I'll take care of passing 'em out." The harper Paget's voice interjected into the fray. It wasn't a pretty voice, at least in the sense that it was rough around the edges, and not what most would expect from a singer, but it was powerful. She liked it like that. "If you aren't sharding sure you want one, bugger off." She flapped her slender hands at the crowd, then did the same to the workers around her. If she was going to bother with playing the harper diplomat or whatever, guardian of flitter eggs, she did not need them hovering around. The crecheworkers went quickly, as they had children to round up from places far more unsafe than the dining hall. The cook left as well. The acting headwoman spared the harper a look, but she too ambled off after a moment. The crowd quickly thinned and Osro bounded forward with a limping Fahra.
"I'll 'elp too;" the little boy said, settling himself in a squat next to the eggs. Paget gave the boy a look, but she had a tolerance for children, even if she did little to manage her tongue around them. Fahra sat down by her nephew and Paget turned away, not minding either of the pair. She scanned the thinned crowd. There were still too many for the eggs, but the issue of logistics only briefly popped up in her mind. She would handle it, mainly because she felt no need to be perfectly fair. Her eyes bore into the individuals at the front, telling them to stay back. "Name and rank, as the other lady said. I don't much care. You better be as sure as fire that you can care for a flitter if you're here. I'll hear all the names and start with the riders though;" the harper said, then waved at them to start speaking as she carefully picked up the first egg.
If electric charges shock me, I smile and fold my arms, I feel nothing new, Because my mind is on you.

It was times like this that Corian wished he was just that little bit pushier. As it happened, the crowd was pressing in a little and there he stood, with several other people, nearly shoved right into the fireplace and eggs where they lay on the hearth. It hardly mattered though, Corian was just pleased he had arrived relatively early. He watched as a boy cleared a path through the crowd and pulled a face. That's what he needed to do sometime, work up the courage to just walk through without a care in the world. He looked at the eggs on the hearth once more and studied them with interest. He didn't see any queen eggs but there were definitely a few that were larger than the others.
He stopped squirming and fidgeting after a moment when he realised that one of the women who had been with the children stood up. Fahra, of Green Eriputh, had gotten to her feet to shout over the excited crowd. If he had only impressed a dragon his first hatching he would have been able to go first... Maybe... Otherwise he would have gone last. As it happened, he had only to wait until the riders and the children got their pick followed by the few Wher candidates... He supposed that was fair enough considering that the Riders and ranking members of the Weyr were the leaders. The Weyrbrats also made sense considering they were the ones to find the eggs. He half wondered why they didn't get to go first.
So, he stood there but laughed a little when Harper Paget told everyone who was merely spectating to disperse. As it happened, he waited patiently for his turn hoping that there would be enough left over for him. Even if it was a small one, he just wanted a little friend. Perhaps it would give him more confidence when he stood on the sands next.
Nobody spoke until a boy nearby piped up. Jerrith. Corian followed suit. "Corian, Dragon Candidate"
--- --- ---
Kire looked about her. Quite a number more people had turned out. She was pleased she wasn't the only person who had managed to get to the front of the queue after a short while. She hadn't really pushed anyone, she'd just made her way into empty spots. Besides, she wasn't even that close to the front. It seemed that people were doing well, however, to stay back away from the hearth on which the eggs were actually laying. She supposed this was a good thing considering the danger a whole crowd of people might pose to the fragile eggs. They weren't all that large, after all, and might easily be crushed or eaten by a dragon, Flitter or other creature if they did not exercise caution.
She looked up as a woman got to her feet, shouting about the order in which the eggs would be claimed. It seemed as though she would be able to get an egg shortly if she persisted. It sure would have been lovely to receive one of the small creatures. She could just imagine the Wher she would eventually impress being thoroughly amused by the small creature as a friend. She believed it was important for the Whers to have companions. It was ideal for those to be other Whers but a firelizard would do just fine in her opinion.
She spotted a young boy bustling forward to help the woman Fahra of Eriputh. He was so adorable that Kire hoped he would receive a lizard himself. She was certain he was Osro, the son of the Weyrwoman. Knowing how these things happened it was probably the boy who had found the eggs himself and so he deserved first choice. In fact, that was her general thought, that the Weyrbrats deserved the first choice but she didn't really care. So long as she got a choice eventually she'd be happy.
Two boys had already spoken up. If she didn't speak now then she would never speak. "Kire, Wher candidate." She spoke after a moment in as loud and confident a voice as possible. Hatchings always made her a little nervous...
{ooc: k this is going to be weird but I will have them say it as though it was after Jerrith...}

Shards, Jerrith's head was hurting. So many people... it was so stifling in here, for a moment he could hardly breathe.
But he refused to flee. Not over something as little as a headache. If he couldn't stand being somewhat uncomfortable, how could he ever hope to deal with fighting Thread? What if... what if he was Threadscored? Of course nobody he knew had actually experienced that, but it was supposed to be one of the most painful things that could happen. If he couldn't deal with a bit of a headache, how could he ever hope to deal with that?
He might not get an egg, of course. So many people here, and dragon candidates were very nearly the last in line. He'd deal with that, if the eggs ran out before it got that far. He'd try that much harder to devote what time he could to Magpie, and to keep attention on the little nuisance even when he couldn't be there with him in person.
But if he could get another...
He stood his ground, measuring his breathing as though preparing to sing. The concentration helped; if not to banish the headache, at least to withstand it.
Now wasn't the time, though, for him to speak up and announce his name and candidacy. Not for a while yet, most likely. So he held his peace, and waited - waited until the eggs ran out or until it was finally time for the candidates to speak.
((edit to add))
When nobody else seemed inclined to break the silence, though, he lifted his hand. He swallowed hard, but forced his voice to be clear when he said, "Jerrith. Dragon candidate."
With that done, he tried to fade back into, if not invisibility, at least anonymity. Someone was sure to speak up who stood higher on that list than he did, right? But at least he'd spoken, he'd made his interest known.

Zeuth had desired a nap between lessons, and G’len had been more than happy to leave him to it. The young bronze had been very nearly intolerable since his rider had bonded with a firelizard at Eulo’s hatching; though G’len was awfully fond of the little black already, his dragon was still sulking over the fact that he was now required, Faranth forbid, to share his human with another. As he’d grown quite fond of pointing out over the past sevenday or so, he certainly hadn’t given His permission to feed the wretched thing, and he couldn’t understand why it had stuck around at all. And G’len, usually willing to humor his dragon or at least ignore him, was quickly getting fed up with the attitude. He'd been thrilled to Impress the little black, for one thing, and for another he was quickly coming to realize just how useful firelizards could be for someone of his vocation. Though technically he was now a dragonrider, and his first responsibility lay with the Weyr, he’d forever be the charlatan – the psychic, trickster, and showman who’d won himself a small slice of fame over the turns. It had never been so much a job as an identity for him, and it was now very much an integral part of his character; and certainly something that contributed to the sometimes-frustrating, though admittedly never-boring connection he shared with the snoozing bronze back in the barracks.
In any event, he was nevertheless grateful for a bit of alone time. Not that he planned to spend it by himself – what a wasted opportunity that would be! – but the respite, however brief, from arguing with his dragon was more than welcome. And so it was that he sauntered into the dining hall, hands-in-pockets and signature smile fixed in place, to discover he’d unknowingly placed himself in the middle of some sort of drama. People were rushing about at high speeds, and there was a clear undercurrent of excitement to the chatter that filled the room. It was enough to rouse the little black who lay sprawled across his shoulders, and the young ‘lizard blinked blearily around the room as G’len discreetly approached the hearth.
Another clutch! And a large one, by the looks of it. A familiar sparkle lit the boy’s eyes, and his grin took on a distinctly mischievous tilt. Hadn’t he just been telling himself firelizards were such useful creatures. Never mind Zeuth and his apparent aversion to them– imagine what he could accomplish with a group of little cohorts like the black twined about his neck? Turning his attention, briefly, to the sleepy ‘lizard, he arched an eyebrow.
“Whaddya say, sir? Should we try and snag you a couple of friends while we’re here? Don’t want Zeuth ganging up on you, after all. He may be a big brute, but there’s safety in numbers.” The black only huffed dispassionately – dour little thing, it was – and so G’len merely shrugged before approaching the table. The first lady’d mentioned that weyrlings were supposed to get last pick, which seemed a touch unfair if you were one, but it didn’t seem like anyone else was jumping at the opportunity to cajole an egg out of the less-friendly Paget. And so he smiled at her and rocked back on his heels – not overly-friendly, which likely wouldn’t get him far in this instance, but he tried instead for subtly charming and, most importantly, harmless. He sent a quick smile to Osro, as well, who he recognized from the little card show he’d put on very shortly after his arrival at the Weyr, before speaking up.
“ G’len, weyrling of Zeuth.” He never specified bronze, if he could help it (he was by no means modest, himself, but he found it irritated his dragon from time to time, which was always a plus); at least he’d remembered the honorific form of his name, this time. “I’d be happy to take an egg or two off your hands, if there are any left once you sort through this lot.” He gestured to the gathered crowd, then took a small step back to leave room for anyone else who wished to come forward.

A bit nervous around all these people around him, he didn't know who he was bumping into, or pushing, or shoving. He didn't really care, he was never good with people, and he probably was never going to be very good. He had hopes of impressing a flit, hoping that would at least be a bit of a foot in the door kind of scenario for him, that he'd have a flit, and others would have new flits, and people would be more willing to accept his... well... jerkish attitude. If not because of a flit, maybe if he ever got to impress a dragon, that would do it. He had no idea he wanted to be around people, and at least have one or two conversation when he didn't turn into a little jerk.
Seems like today wasn't going to be a day for that either. Looking at the girl he pushed, ugh... they were about the same height, weren't they? He really disliked that he had ended up being so much smaller than both of his parents, it was another reminded that he had to be a little bit bigger and ruder in his personality to even get one step ahead. Raising an eyebrow at her threat, "And who died and made you in charge of the flits? Are your names written on any of them yet, girlie?" Standing with his arms at his side, he suddenly crossed them, he had managed to get away the entire summer with wearing long sleeves without statements from anyone, and now that it was fall, people didn't think twice about it.
"Or is it that you think that you deserve a flit so much more than anyone else. Pretty self centered if you ask me, but you didn't ask me... and I didn't ask you for your opinion on my attitude, so maybe you should keep your mouth shut."
The crowd was thinning out, he had been so busy turning his words and attention to the girl, that he hadn't heard the instructions being said. He did in fact hear when two people stated their names. What was going on? Did they have to do a roll call for eggs? Had he missed everything? Well, at least one thing, he was going to say his name before this girl did, and turning to look, his blue eyes found the person in charge quickly, "Weslin, Dragon Candidate." He spoke loud enough to be heard, and with a smirk, turned back to the girl, hoping that if they ran out of eggs, that because she hadn't said her name yet, she'd be the last one to possibly be given one, or none.

H’to looked at the people as they spoke, blinking as he listened. Dia still hissed and wiggled with excitement. The blue rider lightly pet the green’s head, trying his best to keep her calm, though he was clearly failing, but it was the only thing he could do to keep her from flying towards the eggs again. He stood, silent for a moment, then stepped forward to state his name and rank. ”H’to, WingSecond of blue Lanith,” He said with a smile and a nod. He was amused by Dia’s hisses as he moved and spoke his introduction. Why not send her to me? Lanith crooned mentally to His. H’to smiled to himself again. Nah, its alright, Lanith. She is just excited, and is being somewhat good, He looked at the green again. Her franticly swirling eyes were focused on the eggs again. Flashes of images danced in and out of H’to’s mind as the green tried to get Hers to get them. She wanted! Why wasn’t hers listening?! She didn’t want to put the matters in her own talons. There was too many people! H’to heard his name from another voice and turned to look at Ara. He smiled kindly as his eyes lit up. ”Hello there, Ara! How are you? There are flit eggs. Everyone is trying to get one,” He spoke faster than normal, the excitement making him almost jittery.
